Galaxy Z Fold 2 Teardown! -- Where is the 'Folding Glass'?

Jun 02, 2021
Today we're going to take apart the new Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 2, one of the best-designed smartphones of all time. I'm not complaining, although that just means there's more we can see inside. We'll start by turning it off. and then turn it back on because today we're going to start, let's start. Any responsible phone repair technician or manufacturer would advise against what we're about to do, but we do want to learn more about the limits of Samsung's flexible screen technology. We have to know at what point the screen will leave this mortal existence. We'll start by removing the plastic trim around the inner screen.

This is a shock absorber to keep dust out and prevent the phone halves from clicking together when

fold

able, it has a copper wire bead inside to help with the structure as well as little clips and glue that hold it in place to the frame of the phone, definitely stronger than last year's center

fold

edge, there is a small foam cushion that slides into the crack between the two halves this could be what helped keep dust out during the durability test . I heard there are new bristles inside the hinge so we'll have to find them once we're done with the screen, the screen is still.

I'm living at this point so far, so good, if it's anything like last year's fold, we know there's a ton of adhesive underneath so we're going to heat it up with the heat gun and then I'll use my razor blade to lift it up. the metal plates that hold each half, you'll notice that if my razor is under that metal plate, nothing happens, but if my razor accidentally goes through the layers of plastic into the screen, the pixels die instantly, so we'll avoid stabbing them and everything will stay pretty. Much intact until we start to lift the half of the screen that is detached, the central spine of the Z-fold has started to get a little scared, this is definitely not indicative of a potential defect or an overly fragile device.

Removing that plastic trim piece is like removing. An arm or leg is a very vital piece of the screen and I'm already impressed with how long it lasts without it. You can see the front camera peeking through the screen as it raises and lowers, which is kind of fun. For that I will heat up the other half of the screen and then use my same trick with the razor blade under the metal plate to remove it and get it in working condition. It's a flexible

folding

screen, so we should be able to fold it for as long as we can. don't touch the edge too much, you know, since we removed that edge protection and well, we touched the edge look

where

my thumb is without that edge protection, the whole pixel line is now toast because I pressed the edge of the screen with a few With more carefully placed cuts, we can remove the rest of the adhesive holding the screen to the body and all we are left with is the ribbon cable that connects the screen to the internal motherboard.

As a side note, about 1 in 4,000 people suffer from photosensitive epilepsy, so let those guys know that the following might get a little flashy. The flexible screen has a limit to how much it can be folded. You will notice that every foldable screen has a wide curve at the point

where

it folds like the flex pi or the z-flip, it does not fold tightly on itself because when you fold it kills the pixels, a fold that is too tight should also break the layer of ultra thin

glass

under the top plastic and in fact that is exactly what we are seeing, obviously the screen is very excited about this new development but if we look closely we can see super small cracks along the tight crease that I made on the foldable screen these fine fractures are definitely under the top layer of soft plastic to get to them I can slide my razor blade very carefully between the top clear plastic layer and the pixels so we can better see that thin

glass

underneath .
I have to admit it looks pretty cool, the pixels die like a runaway inkblot on top. The camera still works, by the way, it's just the screen that's having a moment. The

folding

glass is much more visible at this point, as it is all shattered and broken. It's definitely ultra-thin, cool, as much fun as it was. although I think it's time we turn off the phone and open it like a normal person so we can get a better look at the internal hinge and those new bristles. First, the removable covers have to come off from the link in the description and then you can use the old heat gun razor blade combo to remove the screen just for record repair shops.
They usually have large hot plates and suction machines. Do this a little more safely and efficiently, so if your phone never breaks, don't think all repairmen do it. running with a hair dryer there are real tools for this kind of thing, once the adhesive is cut on the outside I'll turn it on real quick to make sure I don't break anything since you know the rest of the phone is inside. this pristine condition looks great once i turn it off again i can pop out the rubber plug over the screen tape remove the screen and head to the only place on this phone without a screen a little more heat and when you cut it it goes remove the rear glass where it comes out.
One piece has a small microphone on the rear camera lens, this is for better video audio or just noise cancellation. With the exteriors removed, we can now see the 24 visible Phillips head screws and the two additional screws hidden under the wireless charger. Without all the screws, we can remove the wireless and reverse wireless charger. It communicates through the little circular pads that just rest on the top of the motherboard and we can disconnect the battery if you notice up here my z-fold 2 5g is missing the internal 5g millimeter wave antennas because not all z-fold 2 5g versions will ship with those installed.
However, Samsung is a pro at offering different versions of its phones to different markets without disclaimers, so there's nothing super new here, the other half has a cavity for the top speaker, you can see that the earpiece also It is built into the same piece of plastic, although the phone is not waterproof, we still see the waterproofing mesh over the top of the speaker opening and the foam balls are also inside under the red. The sticker on the bottom plastic piece has the other stereo speaker and is also filled with those same sound dampening balls that we see on high-end speakers.
I'll disconnect the right battery and if we take a look at the internal folding screen we can see it pop up. Through the frame right here above the battery and it connects like a little lego without the big screen, we see for the first time the silver metal structural side supports and the copper layer which I imagine helps keep the entire screen cool, the best . On top of that, it is the center part, since a solid piece of metal would be too rigid to bend. Samsung has used small aluminum sticks like a fence or one of those roll-up bamboo yoga mats, this gives flexible support to the screen and only allows it to bend. in one direction, these little details on the inside are cool, we haven't found the internal bristles yet, so let's disconnect the side button ribbons and the four larger extension ribbons that connect the circuit boards to each other after removing a More screw in At the bottom, the charging port plate can be separated from the phone.
The USB-C port can fast charge at 25 watts and has its own water damage indicator label on the back. It will turn pink if the phone never gets wet. The Z-fold 2 has no IP rating now we can remove the right motherboard the green one with its top interior front camera which is identical in size and shape to the 10 megapixel camera that points to the exterior front screen it is interesting that its style connectors lego They are also blue and green, but they don't match the blue and green plates they are connected to, they are probably interchangeable, although there are two more screws holding the blue main plate and once it is lifted we see the cooling pad of graphite.
We'll talk about that in a second. All the rear cameras of the z-fold 2 are 12 megapixels, the ultra white camera on the top, the normal camera with ois in the center and the 12 megapixel telephoto camera on the bottom, which also has image stabilization optics now for the graphite pad Samsung doesn't talk much or at all about this, but we discovered during my cooling system change between exynos and qualcomm processors that the type of cooling does not make much difference the heat transfer of the vapor chamber of Copper behaved quite similarly to these paper-thin graphite layers, so it's not a big deal, although reports indicate that each of the z-fold 2 will be equipped with the most powerful Qualcomm processors. from the exynos chips, so at least that drop in performance isn't something you need to worry about with this two thousand dollar phone, it's only the thirteen hundred dollar phones that you need to be careful about because the SIM card tray It has its own cute badge. an SD card would have been great too, but now the part I hate the most about Samsung phones are the batteries, while every other phone manufacturer uses regular adhesive or magic tabs.
Samsung likes to show off the world's strongest glue. A piece of this would have prevented the Titanic from sinking. I would like to ask where this battery will go. Samsung. If you were attaching the battery to a Mars rover, this amount of glue would make sense, but the phone is already sealed and the most. The speed you'll ever encounter is falling on someone's face after an hour of sleeping, scrolling through glue is definitely overkill. I'll add a little isopropyl alcohol under the battery to dissolve the adhesive now that it's exposed, but you still shouldn't need to invoke a chemical. reaction to removing my battery the largest battery is 2345 milliamp hours and the smallest battery is 2155 milliamp hours.
I'm just going to leave that one on the frame finally the hinge some hinges are simple like the microsoft duo or the motorola razer but Samsung likes to show some engineering skills and I'm not complaining there are five screws that attach to a center plate which, once removed, exposes the underside of the two flexible ribbons that run across each half. These ribbons only have to flex 180 degrees, so they are just normal ribbon, although the Microsoft duo also had two ribbons that connected the halves and their ribbons were made of fibrous metal that flexes 360 degrees. It's interesting to see the ways different companies can solve the same problem.
I'll eliminate three more. screws on the bottom and another three on the top and once those extension strips are peeled off the frame, we see for the first time the hinge cavity and the long line of bristles that are located just inside the hinge, it is a super fine line of small short brushes. which allow enough room for the hinge to flex while still maintaining a pretty decent seal against dust, as we saw in the durability test video. It's impressive that such a small and probably inexpensive addition can solve such a big problem that the rest of the hinge is relatively similar.
Compared to last year, it still has its long metal spine that can be customized in color this time around, and it still has a bunch of those super small gears and internal coils that regulate the force required to open and close the halves. I'm impressed between this and the LG. Wing and Microsoft Duo 2020 has been a pretty good year for single-build phones. Yes, my z-fold 2 may not be alive anymore, but at least we got to see how it worked from the inside, so rest in peace, it's a lot less expensive and less. A catastrophic way to see the inside of your phone, of course, would be to simply grab one of my dbrand detachable skins.
It's a fraction of the cost with all the fun, we now have skins for over 50 different devices so I'll leave a link below in the description what's your favorite phone we've taken apart this year let me know in the comments come hang out with me on Instagram and Twitter and thank you very much for watching, see you around
