Furniture Makeover w/ Fusion Mineral Paint & Peel/Stick Wallpaper
Feb 26, 2022hey guys welcome back to the
furniture
teacher if you are new here my name is lauren and i am thefurniture
teacher i recently quit my full time job as a kindergarten teacher and now i am here showing you how i get old and outdated furniture and give it a new life and purpose or inspire you to create something new for your own home today i am going to put out some newpaint
ok newpaint
for me i have heard a lot aboutmineral
fusion
paint and indeed I found out that a lot of you have already triedmineral
fusion
paint so I'm excited to put this on some furniture today which we're going to do about this dresser and I've got another fun little thing we're going to try as far as this dresser and drawer fronts is something i've been wanting to try so keep watching because it will be something new and i hope it also inspires you to try more and more new things let's start with the first part like always re and we're going to remove the hardware ok we're going to go ahead and remove the hardware and keep it because I plan on using it again on this vanity once it's finished and then I'm going to pull out the drawers as well and the person had already labeled them before before I received it, so that's great because that's a step I don't really have to do, so lately I've been forgetting about it for some reason. tell you how much i spent on this dresser so i bought this in a set of a tall dresser and a long dresser and two nightstands total i bought it for 125 bucks so we'll say i bought this dresser for 40 of that 125 so which I think that's a pretty good price for this dresser I think I can make a pretty decent profit on that I love that this dresser is still really the drawers go in and out nicely and then they even have this here so they don't like it slide all the way through that's something ng you want to watch out for drawers sometimes you know they seem to work fine but they might fall over so watch out for that when you're shopping for furniture oh we gotta suck let's move on and clean so using this sunny side teaspoon substitute for cleaning today make sure you have that degreaser when you're cleaning furniture get rid of all those oils and only the grime from the sides, top, ca jones everywhere this is one of the most important parts of refinishing your furniture because this is the first step in preparing your piece, if you don't do it right your furniture won't last and it will chip and it's just that the paint won'tstick
it willstick
and so on so I have my double bucket here and I like to do that because one of them will be the dirty water that I clean everything with and then one of them will stay clean until the rinse stage this one is not in too bad a condition at as for your dirty sage i know there are a few stains here and there but even if your vanities or furniture don't look very dirty you still have to take that step ok here's your shot of dirty water people this is not as bad as can be said. difference, but it's not really that bad, but we'll go ahead and take this side and rinse it out, so we just have to get all that cleaning solution off, as well as any other dirt and stuff that we might have.I got lost. I'm going to go ahead and use my surf prep sander for the sanding portion of this vanity and we're not really looking to remove any finish or anything but there are a couple of scratches here that you can see that I just want to smooth out. , but this is also a pretty shiny smooth surface, so we need to make it a little rougher, so I'm going to use 320 grit sandpaper to roughen the entire surface, okay? re done that it just took me less than five minutes to do a quick scrape and we're ready to clean it off with a microfiber cloth ok we're ready for the primer but I want to lift my chest here so I'm going to use our pyramids of furniture and their pyramids of painters and we haven't used them in quite some time but I always forget about them.
I will try to remember better because they are just a lifesaver. This is so low to the ground and it's very hard to get up and be next to the ground without getting like rocks. and floor stuff in my paint and brush so this is a perfect way to elevate your furniture. It doesn't look like it's very strong, but as you can see it's not going anywhere, these pyramids are really strong. and they just make a world of difference, it's time to prime, so we're going to use a primer that kills. I got it from Lowe's so this is just a stain blocking primer.
I did break a couple of spots in the finish here so you know that I'm not sure if it will show up but since I'm going to do white I don't want to risk it and then also the primer will give it a really great first coat so I have a very dark and I'm going to use a white and I've actually heard this white I got from fusion picket fence and it just doesn't have the best coverage that can happen with white so I'm going to make sure to do at least one coat of primer maybe even two just to make sure I'm going to have enough paint for the whole vanity shake it off and then I have my pan here prepped and ready with aluminum foil and that's just for easier clean up I'm also going to remove it to do make sure you mix all those particles to the bottom you know shaking is great but also just taking a second to stir also helps make sure all those particles sinking to the bottom get mixed too They mix very well so I also have my other roller that I had used the other day because I bought it wrapped in aluminum foil and it is going to serve as a roller for this project also because it knows that the primer is very difficult to get out of these rollers and brushes, so that as much as I can save them to use, you know, once or twice before I throw them away, the better, so for the primer on the drawers, so I told you I'm going to do something a little different for this flip and that includes the drawers mostly.
I'm going to prime the outside of the drawers but I'm not going to paint everything so I'm going to prime everything but I'm not going to prime everything you'll see what I mean here in a moment so I got two uses out of my foam roller here, so i took it apart and then it was easy to clean with the aluminum foil. everything off and I'm going to go ahead and throw this out now we're going to wait for the primer to dry and then we're going to paint a bit we've got our fusion paint so I'm using the picket fence colored by fusion mineral paint which is like a warmer white which means it's not glossy and this is one it's actually an all in one paint but like I said I just wanted to do that primer because I didn't want to risk anything coming off but also to give it that first coat of coverage this is really going to give me a good base so i can make sure i'm going to get really good coverage with just one jar of paint and primer is actually cheaper than paint that's why you do that for savings a little bit of time and in order to save some paint I'm going to go ahead and give it a try it's water based it doesn't need a top coat let's see it gives you all the instructions it says this color will require three or four layers. for solid coverage so it tells you right there um we'll see if I'm going to use three or four coats again that primer gave us a solid base so here we go I'm going to use a zebra brush to apply this what and?
What I'm doing for these drawers is I'm just going around the edges because I'm actually going to add something else to the front. on the drawers so just the edges need to be painted nice and then on top here on the front of the drawer I'm just going to make sure that the paint on the edges is smoothed out that way it won't get lumpy or bumpy. the first coat of the fusion is on and you know it's hard to see the coverage here because I didn't paint on top but for the vanity the coverage looks amazing although I can see where if I didn't do that first coat of primer this coverage it wouldn't be very good um very good because I still see the primer through this coat of paint so we'll probably end up needing those three coats but that's okay because we've got enough paint here so I had this can full here and I had 16 ounces and we're right here now so we haven't used too much paint so we've got a lot to go the first coat is dry here and now I have my brush here i just put it in a plastic bag when I know I'm going to use it again so you're ready for the second coat you just want to check the coverage of the first coat you can still see a little bit even though I did two coats of primer and one coat of paint we still look a bit dark here so if you saw on last week's episode where we got a bigger canopy but then they had to take it down and all that stuff so we ended up finding a better solution to get two 10 by 10 pop up canopies to really protect us from the sun that strong sun gets really hot fast and it's not good to paint in direct sunlight anyway so not only does it help us stay cool but it's also better for furniture I'm usually using a little water with my paint, well this isn't technically a chalk paint. it's actually an acrylic based paint um so you know it's still water basically you could thin it down if you need to but you don't need to thin it out in my opinion it's already very nice and thin and easy to brush on . but I don't know if you can tell but even right here the section And I did it has a lot more coverage than the first coat there sometimes it's a little scary when you're putting paint on and you're like oh my gosh it's not covering well but believe me the first coat always makes it look worse and then as you continue to add the paint continues to improve and with the roller with the primer I was having a hard time getting into these cracks but with the brush it's nice and easy to get in there and then continue to use the same up and down motion you can choose to go up and down or side to side whichever you prefer just make sure you stay consistent all good the second coat is there so it will dry on its own a bit and then we'll get going with a third layer in the meantime, go ahead and show you guys what I'm planning for the front of the drawers.
Are you ready to find out what I'm going to put on the front? the drawers i like drum rolls we are going to put
wallpaper
on the drawer fronts this is something i have wanted to try for a while now and there are a couple of different ways you could do it you could do the texturedwallpaper
which It's coming soon I just know or you could do the designed wallpaper so I wanted to do a design for this dresser and I'm just going to measure the drawer to see how long I need it and then we're going to measure to see how wide I need it, so both sides 27 by 7 and 3 4. ok this is going to work but I didn't do the best job cutting it so I think I just need to be on a better flatter surface but this looks great, but i need to start over with my cut. so unfortunately this piece is going to be out of play i just need to find a better surface ok i went in so we can go ahead and use the kitchen table and hopefully this will help me get straighter lines ok agreement?I've decided to do is basically cut little big pieces and then I'll glue them together and then I'll just cut off the excess around the outside so we've got everything cut out let's go back outside I've got my little wallpaper scraper smooth everything out get all those bubbles out okay first one is done I like it and then I'm going to have to drill a hole for the hardware right there to reinstall that so one down four more to go right we've got the wallpaper on all five drawers so now what I'm going to do is put a third layer on the dresser and then I'm going to do some touch ups around the edges here in the drawers and then we'll be ready to put the hardware back on and get this baby photograph.
I'll just use a very small artist brush here. so I can get through the edges nicely and really try not to put it on the front of the drawer because that's where the wallpaper is in some places I cut where the wallpaper was on the edge so I just want to make sure I go ahead and remove those dark spots so I'm just doing that with this little brush so I know I said I wasn't sure how many coats I would end up doing on this vanity. I could get away with the two coats of mineral fusion paint plus the primer, but you know I really believe that to make this the highest quality piece of furniture even though it's an extra step the third coat will just give it the finishing touch. end you need so you're not just going to want to give it half your effort because it's not going to last that long it's not going to look as good if again if you keep it you still want quality furniture in your own home If you sell it, you want your customers to keep coming back or even give that suggestion by word of mouth to someone else. who may be looking for furniture to refinish and put into their own home they can pretend this is like a top coat because the fusion doesn't require a top coat so they know you would be doing this if you were using a paint that required a top coat eg which inGenerally, it is about the same amount of time.
I'm actually curious though I want to use another color of mineral fusion paint because this white is great but you know I can't really tell coverage. which actually has because I had to prime a lot so I'm interested in using one of your colors to see coverage. If you guys are interested in seeing me make another piece with fusion mineral paint, please let me know in the comments. what color do you think would be awesome for me to try if you are an avid user of fusion paint then let me know what your favorite color is ok we are done with the paint and like I said no top coat is needed so it's done after that dries we'll put the drawers in to put those holes for the hardware through the wallpaper and then we'll be ready for the stage ok that looks good to me our last step is to just go ahead and add the hardware and that's it there's that hole in there so I'm just going to line it up I've got a sharp screw here so I'm going to open up the hole and then we'll go ahead and use the same hardware that it came with because this nickel colored hardware goes along with the wallpaper and the target. and honestly, it blends a bit, which I think I like, it will give it a nice finishing touch, something I wanted to try and I'm so glad I did.
I thought this dresser was perfect for this because it's flat you know some drawers have that little lip on the edges but this one is completely flat and I think that really makes a difference with this wallpaper and how it turned out well and even came out well baby it's finished and i love it i love the way it turned out the wallpaper gives it an extra dimension and like i said about the hardware you know this is the perfect color hardware because it blends in but it's still there ok let's talk about the fusion paint i enjoyed using it the fusion mineral paint applies very well it was easy to work with and the coverage is decent and again this specific color didn't have the best coverage but that's another reason why i want to try another color the finish is a matte finish and i always love a good paint that has an all in one you dont have to do the top coat top coats for me are i know they are essential but It's also like the part looks ready.
Why isn't it ready? but you have to have that shield this built in top coat eliminates that step so i love that quality of the fusion mineral paint so i gave three coats of the dresser but not including the drawers and i have half of this Can of 17 ounces here so you know that even if I had to do the drawer fronts, I would have had a lot of paint to do those three coats, I think and hope it's only two coats for full coverage with a more solid color. I guess a darker color instead of just white, white always tends to need more coats for full coverage because it's such a light color it makes sense, so there's the picket fence fusion mineral paint piece , it's finished so now it's time we got it set up here we're going to take some pics we're going to post on the facebook market again i got this vanity for 40. the wallpaper i actually got on amazon i'll link below in the description it cost me thirty bucks but I didn't use even close to the full amount so let's divide that by about let's say the third so let's say I spent ten bucks on the wallpaper and then the paint was twenty bucks but it only I used half of it, so that's another ten bucks, so we're at sixty bucks for the materials and the dresser.
I'm going to list this at $225 and let's see what happens if my market likes or doesn't like the wallpaper.
