metropolitan area stranding cars damaging property and possessions and leaving many of roads impassable Schools throughout the area are closed for today.

Joining us from Fort Lauderdale, CBS News National Correspondent Manuel Borquez, Manny talks to us about conditions there and how travelers hoping to get around where they are should adjust their plans. Yeah, that last update says the

airport

may not reopen until 5am tomorrow. a really hard pill to swallow for a lot of people here who had to spend the night at the airport but you can see behind me why it can't operate right now all the water covering part of the runway over here but back there in the bottom uh behind those cars that are passing right now well that's the main runway and it's still under water so because of the water because of the need to remove debris the airport still can't function .

Hundreds of people staying stranded trying to find other plans in the city around the airport right now in cleanup mode you know manny as you were saying i just saw the top of a car in what looks like yeah there looks like a lake in essence How are the officials? in Florida responding to this and how widespread the damage is we have seen on video from the Broward County Sheriff's Office of deputies of him boating into some of the flooded neighborhoods and getting people and pets out to safety . The American Red Cross is here trying to help some of those families, but the city right now is still in an assessment mode trying to figure out how bad the flooding is and what they can do to rescue people and then get them to a place where they can get help. true manny bahorquez thank you
