Flight Attendants Share Their Horror Stories

May 08, 2020
It was literally the scariest moment I've ever had flying Hi, I'm Megan, I'm a

flight

attendant for a major commercial airline. I have been a

flight

attendant for about four and a half years. My name is Ruby, it says "Me." I have been a flight attendant for two years, our company basically deals with charter flights most of the time, just one flight. I was flying from JFK to the Bahamas and I chose this trip because it's only an hour, half flight, hour and a half return, I thought. I'd be home on time, no big deal, it'll be a quick and easy flight, there was some kind of thunderstorm season, the pilots will warn us if it's going to be a lot of bumps, you know, and our briefing this time is, they said.

Yes, there will be a lot of turbulence, but we will tell you when to sit tight. Turbulence is always a little scary for most people who fly for stewardesses. It's really nice because it usually means we have to cancel service early and we can just let's learn the hardtops, so we go on the flight, we did our service, no problem, basically right after we pick up our carts the captain rings for public address. I'm like tents, they immediately take

their

seats and fasten

their

seat belts, and when that happens, you know, it's serious, we ran to our seats, put on our seat belts, began to frantically close all the containers and immediately the plane falls 500 feet from the sky to put this into perspective, normally it would take a plane to descend 15,000 feet in about 10 to 20 minutes, so if you can think about that, we descended 500 feet in about three seconds, we're in the air like if I was still in my jump seat and had my seat belts on, but I'm like this, it was literally the scariest moment I've ever flown, everyone started screaming and I really thought like something bad had happened, the passengers didn't know what was happening, they were getting scared, many of them were screaming, it was good that we were in the back alley because If we were sitting in what we call the princess seat, it is the folding seat that faces the passengers, it is a little difficult to control that kind of scary, so I'm glad there was no one sitting there, there's no one who saw us when I was. confident enough to get up, we got up from our seats and walked down the aisle just to make sure everyone was okay, this is what smiling because we're supposed to be calm under pressure, if something crazy happens we're still smiling to Let passengers know. everything is fine, we just walk around and make sure everyone is okay, you know what guys we are going to get through together, everything is going to be okay, we had to land in the Bahamas, we are petrified, we have to check the plane for external damage and things before we left so it was like a three hour delay but it turns out it was like a normal airbag that sometimes happens but it was still very scary because of the nature of it only having 30 passengers we are the only one flight.

There was one time when I was cleaning the plane and all the other flight

attendants

put on gloves to check the back pockets of the seats. I usually don't because I like to be pretty fast and get things done quickly. Pretty normal procedure. I pick up the bags and you know, I take out all the trash that's in there in this particular one and I picked it up and I felt like something was pushing me, but it wasn't hard enough for me to be alarmed, so I still feel what it was and I took it all out.

They serve little pretzel bags and people tend to tear off the corners, so I thought they were like a bunch of those you know in First, I thought whatever, since it turns out the customer bit his nails and left his collection of each foot for me to clean them. He took the time to put them in the seat bag pocket, but even with my displeasure I took the time. count the nails and there it was, it's exactly terrible. I bite my nails from time to time, which is the most disgusting thing in the world, so you know, I get it, you know, I still don't understand, I don't know, it was more disgusting. the fact that I just had it in my hand and took my time counting them or the fact that you know I'm not wearing gloves and I still don't wear gloves and I still decided to clean the plane that way I'm flying on a JFK trip to Las Vegas.

It's a really terrible flight because everyone is pretty drunk and ready to have fun on the plane. Okay, we've got our game faces on, we're ready for the flight, so these two guys come aboard. They're friends, they had a great time last night and they're pretty hungover, they're probably still drying out a little, but we let him get on the plane anyway and they sit down, one of them orders drink after drink after drink and I finally had to cut him off. because people don't realize this, but if you have one drink in the air, it's worth two on the ground, so basically I was drinking like six drinks and it was only about two or three hours into the flight.
At this point, I interrupted him and gave him some water. I guess you know the normal, okay, you know, okay and then he looks at me and says, No, I mean, I'm not drunk, it's okay and he was obviously very drunk. and I just have to give him the water, ignore him, I go back to the kitchen, the flight continues and he's pretty drunk, so he passes out in his friend's lap, he takes over the whole line, maybe 20 minutes passed and the stewardess I was working with drew and I both smelled vomit so we're sniffing we're looking we thought he was on us like he was in the bathroom the bathroom was clean and we finally realized he was coming.
From that row we showed up and it's actually like everywhere is like on the seat, but it's mostly on the floor and you know, I can have a trickle back because we're on kind of a slope, it was everywhere, it was so disgusting and just like we woke him up and I said: are you okay? Do you want some water? and then he freaks out, he's like, there's vomit, like, oh my god, that's not right, no, that wasn't me, like, um, you need to do it. clean up this mom and someone threw up like on the floor man it sucks they say yeah it was you that's why it sucks he's like no bro it wasn't me are you kidding me right now are you saying I threw ? and I didn't know so and so it continues throughout the flight he denies vomiting even though there is clear evidence that he was the only person who could have done it finally we have evidence that the guy behind him complains because there is vomit in his bag and literally the only person who could have done it was the person in front of him.
I told him softly that he was like, sir, this guy is complaining that he threw up in his bag. There is nothing more he can say at this time. and he just stares at me for a long time, he was like oh oh man that sucks, but he never admitted that he was the one who threw it. I felt so bad for that guy so we did what all flight attendants do for any kind of cleaning situation we just put mineral water on him and hoped for the best and when we landed we called housekeeping and they did their thing to clean up the vomit, but I never will that day it was so crazy I had just started my service I was taking drink orders shortly after you know this lady came up to me and asked if the bathroom was locked somehow.
I just said no, you know it must be busy about five minutes after she came back and said. Can you check it again? So I go and finally knock on the door this time. This gentleman said, "I'll be right out," he sounded upset, so we left him alone. The gentleman finally comes out as soon as I walk past him. I didn't notice a In order, I looked at him and noticed that he was a little stained. I didn't know how to approach it, so the first thing I did was go to the bathroom and see what happened.
You know, it ended up like a disaster. When I returned to the bathroom I closed the lab door behind me to my left. I look clumsy on the lid, clumsier on the handle and like the walls were stained in a very strange way, like I hadn't even tried it, you know. clean it remotely, luckily in our small bathrooms we had like Clorox, we sprayed the whole package to clean it. I quickly go to the drawer, grab my gloves and the Clorox cloth and start clumping. I had to do it. like grabbing it with the Y piece, throwing it away after the third time I change gloves.
I finally got rid of all the sticky poop on the wall. I thought I could handle it because you know I've dealt with gross stuff before and once I got to the top it was game over, it was such a big pile of poop I couldn't stand it. I became weak. I still fall over the sink to the point where I got stains on it and that created a completely different problem before. I was able to get out of the bathroom. I was very proud of myself. You know, I managed to hold in all that poop.
I cleaned the bathroom. As far as I was concerned, the bathroom was spotless. Once I finished cleaning, I went back to the kitchen because I did. I have like extra white bees and I also had a tide dish. I approached the gentleman with the white Clorox piece. I asked him if he needed to clean. He can return to the bathroom because he had finally cleaned it while walking in front of the jet. He said, "Thank you, I appreciate your service." Yeah, I wasn't any good.
