FIRST DRIVE: New Mini Cooper SE – 215bhp, £38k Hot Hatch

May 28, 2024
That's the new electric

mini

and the headlines are that it has more range, more space and fewer complications than before, but it should still be fun to

drive

, but is it really any good? We have parked it in a typical English village to find out. Well, that's changed a bit, hasn't it? The slightly fussy older generation has been replaced by something a little less complicated in the kitchen. It's much quieter even in this sporty grade with the little details and John Cooper Works Bobs, but the

first

thing you'll notice is that these headlights are now simpler ovals, giving it a cleaner, calmer look, and the grill is now just a chunk instead of having weird whiskers or a big bar down the middle.

It's got some texture, so it's This Edge has a rounded curve, but then there are some nice strakes on the hood and the great news is that the big plastic wheel arches are gone. This is the body side only. Now when you look down, there's a feature line that's been lowered to make it look like. It's more compact and still has that floating roof with the A-pillar and B-pillar blacked out and as you lower it down you realize it's actually quite short. Now, BMW, which owns a

mini

, has used more expensive protective structures at the front and rear, especially at the rear. forward so I can squash things down and make the car a little bit shorter, which is good, it's still not small, but it's small, it's cool.

More Interesting Facts About,

However, go back and you will notice more type of combination, more calm than before. The fantastic Union Jack taillights are gone, they are now triangular, looking a bit like Spider-Man's webs. I don't know why they remind me of that, but they do and even with these special spoiler pieces of John Cooper and that ventury down there. The rear of this car is very well shaped, it has these big shoulders that make it look quite wide and quite squat. In fact, I think it's very attractive, it's somewhat sober but not boring. Many will have two models on offer, the E which comes with a 41.

KW battery with 182 braking horsepower and 190 M range on the w2p cycle and this SE which gets the 54 KW battery, 215 braking horsepower. braking and 250M range lab £33.45 for the E 37.9 45 for the SE both get 11KW AC charging capacity which is good and the car with the smaller battery gets 7.5KW DC and a Larger battery gets 95 because neither battery is really that big in the grand scheme of things, both should charge from 10 to 80% in just under half an hour, which is fine, but not impressive. I've always loved the interior of the old mini, but this new one is on another level entirely and I think it's absolutely brilliant.

Now the only thing you do notice because it's pretty hard to miss is this little OLED touchscreen the size of a dinner plate. that's a circular hit in the middle of the board, there are some levers down here that I'll explain

first

. This is the gear selector lever, so it's very easy to switch between reverse and

drive

when you're doing a three-point turn. then there's this one which is like the key to start the car, but it looks a bit like a key, so it's a digital representation of an analog function, it's strange but it's good, and then this one alters the experiences that we will see. it arrives in a minute, although this eye of Sauron is kind of a massive circular thing, it's super fast, super slippery and it really works, everything is in its sector, so you have all the usual things, you know the speed in the middle percent of the battery, your mileage. power outputs, it looks really good now, where the old minis used to try to get square shapes and fit them into circular pieces and they just look a bit, you know, like a brick in the wrong hole.
This has been designed to be in this circle so it all fits together and it looks really complicated if I go to the home button when you swipe things, it's very quick and nice to use and everything feels very sleek and like it should be in that circular effect and then when you want to do things like change modes the mini has a real sense of fun so they don't call them modes obviously they call them experiences and this is like the normal mode if I go into go-kart, which is the fast mode, just listen to it woohoo because This actually makes my teeth itch, but listen, there's a man who says Woohoo, that's not weird, okay, it's a little weird, but then of course the circular thing changes.
This is a little spicier, so it looks a bit like a checkered flag. More emphasis was put on the sportier side of things and then as you go through them, this core that we were in before was green, which is basically eco mode, now it obviously needs a ringer that makes it feel floaty and green. when you drive this. efficiency hummingbird flaps its wings to show you that it is being efficient and then if you go too fast it transforms into a running cat now. I don't know who needed that, but it's really distracting, it's like you're trying to drive. gently and there is a kind of flutter and movement around it.
I mean, it's fun, but it's not exactly great. It is Vivid. I'm not sure what Vivid does to be honest, but that's the noise it uses. I think it's for listening to music. And then there's Timeless, which I quite like now, it's inspired by the 60s like the original minis again, it's similar in design but it looks really cool and everything is really crisp, it's got that weird fun feel to it which I really enjoy, balances it and does it. weird things like it closes the sunroof, so if you have a panoramic sunroof on this sporty model, it will actually close it because it wants you to do something else, I'm not too sure and it has a digital assistant called Spike. which is a cartoon bulldog.
I would find it wildly cheesy except for the fact that voice control actually works and understands people, so hey Minnie, turn off the heated steering wheel, turn off the heat, you'll see that it really works and that means you don't have to. swiping across the screen when driving, I mean the rest of the car is also more simply paired, even the door cards have less shapes, they just look a lot more relaxed, the dashboard is done. of this type of woven material there is a kind of fake strap here I don't know what it does but it looks great everything works very well with itself it's funny, it's fun there's also practicality here it's big enough for me one of the What I don't like It's just that I wear big boots and I have big feet.
My foot keeps getting caught right under the brake pedal because I wear big shoes, that's possibly not ideal, but then in the center of the car you have this length. line of a center console, so there's a wireless charging pad up here, some nice little architectural pieces here, cup holders and then this thing that looks like you should be able to take it out and use it as a tote bag, but I haven't figured it out. how to do that yet and it goes all the way to the back where there are more cup holders. The thing is, I think a mini should have a bit of character and this one walks the line brilliantly now that it's a sport, which means it gets some sporty bits like the Red Roof chili and the mirror caps, a steering wheel with a cloth strap, as well as these John Cooper Works sports seats, but it's all been specified as a level three grade, which means you get a lot of extra goodies and we're not talking about small car stuff either. , we're talking about a panoramic sunroof, heated power seats, an interior camera, adaptive LED headlights, a head-up display, a Harmon card and sound system, wireless charging and the rest, this is not just the leather upgrade, sports cost 3 and 1/2 Grand and level three 4 1/2, so to make your mini look like this with the special gray paint, we will go up to over 8 1/2 Grand, making it an electric mini of 422,000 mini mini has never been shy about offering a There are a lot of options to increase those prices and the new one is no exception and in terms of space, there is a small 200L boot which is a little smaller than the mini Previous EV, although you can fold down the seats if you haven't.
If you have passengers and need additional space, don't forget that there is the electric mini countrymen. If you need maximum practicality from your mini now, I'd admit I was a little worried about how the new miniwood works. I'm happy to say that this car is not Junk, it's actually pretty good now that it has a kart mode which I'm in now and people say that karts are really good because they are responsive and handle so well but they are also so comfortable like those of an amateur. Dentistry, so you don't really want that, in a road car, this mini isn't like a kart, but it's got that lovely warm Hatchy vibe that means you can throw it around and it really comes with you, it's very positive.
The front of this car now has a 54KW battery, which is a little bigger, and that means it weighs around 1,600kg, which is pretty fat for a supermini, but you get 215 brake horsepower and about 243 lb-ft of torque, which means it's snappy rather than flat-out quick, it's round but not completely rocky, so it goes from 0 to 62 mph in about 6.7 seconds and comes in at just over 100 mph, but what I like most about it is that it disguises its weight very well. I hear that noise so I'm in go-kart mode which makes things a little tighter but it has that really cool vibe to it, it's not mega fast but the steering is good the brakes work great no they have that kind of weird EV stuff, some faster EVs. they have where the brake feels a little soft like it doesn't do much, this is a positive thing, there is a little bit of Torx there if you hit the accelerator hard, which is kind of understandable because, because there's a lot of talk and it's instantly available but you think enough G in the corners to make everything in the car come crashing down around the keys I lost already slid off the seat about 20 minutes ago, but overall this is a fun and nimble little EV and I've driven it around town before and It still has that ability to get into a hole or go through a junction It feels quite clean and safe It still has that mini Verve It feels like a car with a slightly longer wheelbase when it's soft so it's very even in its handling I will say the ride is a little choppy so hit more than one or two bumps and you get a bit of up and down motion but I expect from a mini it's not something that will completely surprise me and also when you drive it faster , it calms down a bit, so coming into a big corner here you can still feel the bumps it still detects, but again, it's not super fast, but it's enough to get you in trouble if you're being silly and, in fact, just very fun, the mini hasn't forgotten what this car is about and that's being positive and exciting and a bit of fun, you're also sitting quite low, you've got this kind of windshield with gun slots, a big thick steering wheel, the ergonomics It's good, interesting, when the mini electric was only available with a very small battery, it felt compromised when you compared it with other similar cars like I don't know a Perse E28 or a voxal corer or even a Jeep Renegade or an Alfa Romeo Junor I, but now it has a bigger battery and more autonomy, it feels like a suitable option, the exterior is a little more mature, a little more sober, but the interior is technological, it is charismatic and fun, this car is still quite The price is Shocking when you add some options but it's fantastic to drive and I think if you want an electric super mini then the real Mini is now the one to have.
