finally fixing *that* ikea lamp

Apr 09, 2020
I've literally never seen that before I don't know why I don't recognize it okay I know there's a

lamp

there but it doesn't look like the

lamp

so this one in the next DIY is the easiest one of all. A whole small series we are going to make some speakers. Wow, I just wasn't going to offend some people like everyone else. That's this lamp. Hello everyone. I use Kelsey. Hello. My name is Becky. We are the sorry girls who do all kinds of things with our hands today. Because? No, today's video is a video that you desperately need in your life, probably low-key, but you didn't know you needed it, so we're going to show you how to do things you already have.

More Interesting Facts About,

finally fixing that ikea lamp...

Many people just do it because they like it, so there are no problems, there are no problems. way to put up hooks if you're renting you're in a college dorm maybe you have one of these they just go over the door and hang things but they often look like this but they're usually silver or in this case very white. basic and I don't know, it's not that cute, but instead of buying new ones and honestly I don't even know if there are super cute ones like this anyway, we'll work with this guy and try to do it a lot.
finally fixing that ikea lamp
It's cuter, so when I was trying to come up with ideas for what I wanted to do to this guy, I remembered this piece from Ames, who is a furniture designer. You've probably heard of them because of the Eames chair. They do this over the door and here it is. an instant photo, but buying this costs about $300, which is a little expensive to hang over the door, so we'll try to recycle the one we already have into something that looks like this in soap, like in the photo. The plan is to put wooden knobs on this eventually, but my first step will be to try to remove the existing ones just so the wooden ones can go on a little easier, so we went through multiple different techniques and attempts to do this in the most convenient way.

It's easy to use different saws and pliers and after all I know exactly how to do it and it's pretty simple. All you need to do is use a small hacksaw and basically make two notches on either side of the metal ball to weaken it. You don't have to cut it all off because that takes a long time and then with some heavy duty pliers all you do is pry it up and because it's weakened it should come out immediately, come out, come out, come out, okay, eventually. a baby, wow, yeah, okay, now we have something that looks like this and don't worry if they're a little sharp because we're going to cover them, but before we do that I want to paint all of this black, it's a little cold. today, so I hope this works properly, but we don't want to take it apart in our office because the fumes give us a chance, so all the paint dries, we'll move on to the wooden knob, so we'll add the hooks, to do that , I bought these little ones, they're like flat bottom beads, from the craft store and I bought them in two different sizes, one large and one small, and they already have holes in them, but they're not big enough to fit on the bars, so I'm going to use a drill bit to make the holes a little bit bigger and the trick here will be to make all the holes the same depth so they fit evenly, so to do that I'm going to add a little bit of tape to cover the drill bit so I know when to stop. early so all the little knobs now have the holes drilled and these are the same size as the hooks on the shelf, so next we'll just put them on.
I'm going to put some hot glue on there and then place them on top so that's what it looks like, it's so cute. I'm just thinking: where can I put this in my house? I have to find a place for it, but one thing. I'll suggest doing it before this is done - go over the wood with a glossy clear coat because if you use this in the shower or put wet towels on it, we don't want the wood to get gross and wet, so that's what protects it, but once you've done that, this is a very easy Haag to recycle: your basic, same basic, basic beep over the door towel rack, so I hope you enjoyed this line, so this in the next DIY will do things that you already have nice.
It is the easiest of this entire little series and probably the most affordable of this entire series, so be sure to listen carefully. What we're going to address are those not-so-cute soap containers and plastic hair conditioner containers, all that plastic stuff. your house that you use almost daily and we are going to make it nice how we do it, if you ask, well we will use some apothecary type bottles here, you can get amber glass ones, you can get tin ones if you are afraid Glass breaks and it says that in the shower there are also plastic ones that you can get from Muji, but they're like reusable plastic, so you feel a little better about it and you might remember that we actually label these guys in our kitchen, oh god, this is.
Whether it's on a Loft Vibes episode, I wanted to look it up before we started filming, but here we are, we're filming now, whether it's on the Allah Fives episode or maybe some kind of kitchen organization episode, but actually I have to even stick glue on this relief. label I made because the dish soap kept coming off the label, but this is how we are going to solve the problem. If you get containers like these, you can pour the plastic you already have into these, but better yet when you're If you go ahead and stop buying the single-use plastic dispensers, you can get refillable products in bulk, like something like this, or you can even go to a bulk store that sells bulk conditioners, hand soap, dish soap, etc.
We are in a pretty exciting time where we live in a place where we can go to a grocery store and refill what which can be used every day, but once you have your bottles here, you'll still need to label them so you and any of your guests don't get confused, like at my shower. Now I have a larger bottle and a smaller bottle and that's the only way I know. Well I guess also the colored shampoo is clear, the conditioners are not clear, but anyway, it's a fun game of guessing which is which and as you become more and more reusable. things you'll need to label them, so to label them we've created a template for you, some really cute designs.
We made three different designs as seen here and you can print them from our website and there are also six different labels, like hand soap. and lotion, dish soap, body wash, shampoo, conditioner, our stencils are made for these Avery stickers, we test them to make sure that if they get wet, the ink will not smear and they are good for LaserJet and inkjet printers. ink, your laser adjustment is just that laser laser. and inkjet printers, which is good because I know we all have different printers, so we'll link to them below and get them at our local store, but I'm sure we can find them on Amazon so you can go ahead and print. one of our labels that you downloaded from our website and here I have two of different types, one with a more romantic script, one more cute and basic and then the third one is actually a dark label with white writing on it, so it's so simple how that.
I'm going to go ahead and put this on the bottles and we just turn our ugly plastic into something pretty. I'm sorry we don't have the old one, but that's because we don't actually even own them because we got rid of them. A long time ago I thanked Becky for designing these labels and this one even has her own signature so oh my gosh this would be like Becky's signature line yeah I think they are just as adorable and so much more luxurious and you you're going to cheat to all your friends making them think this is a brand and you don't just refill it at the bulk store you're so sneaky and I love you for that that's all I had to say for the next one okay so the following. the things that you already have that we want to make much cuter, we will make some speakers, we will not make the stickers from scratch, but we will make a nice AF cover for some speakers, so this idea came from one of you, I think so.
It was when we were talking about redoing this background and Kelsey figured out, can you even see them? She walks with me. Kelsey found these amazing made-up speakers at the thrift store. I live for this great cover on the front. The wood is so beautiful but maybe this is not so practical for everyone because it might be hard to get another set like this, plus they might not even be good to use because I'm sure they are not Bluetooth enabled and all those other fun features we love about today's speakers to get us into what we're going to do, so I'm sure a speaker like this is not strange to you, they're basic, they look like modern electronics, but I don't know if they're pretty how we want them to be. but buying new or nicer ones is also a big waste and not economical if something you have like this already works, so what I'm going to make is a cover that can fit over any speakers you already have and can replicate a Se you see these old type speakers, so the box that we're going to make to fit over this is like a glorified Kleenex box lid in the fact that it's going to have no bottom because that involves like making a door speaker go in and out.
This is an easy thing to put on top and make the speakers look nice, so we're going to deal with the front last, but to start I'm going to essentially make a three-sided box, but it's actually going to be like two-sided. the top, the back and the sides, we're going to work on the construction first and I'm going to do it with this lumber, it's like craft lumber that you can get at the hardware store and it's a quarter inch by five and a half inches wide. inches is what you want to go for, but as far as actual width, that's going to matter depending on what speaker you have, so as you can see, this is big enough to cover the speaker, that's what we're looking for, so I'm going a To start by cutting out all the pieces to make the top, the back and the two sides, the car deceiver hunt feels like a logo, it's like a grotto, it's like a circle of balls, so now all the pieces for the top of the back on the sides are offcuts we have. them here and they're going to go together something like this you'll like your sad house salad, but before we assemble those pieces let's talk about what we're going to do for the front, so my first thought was to replicate something like our insula. speakers here, oh we made a kind of wooden lattice on the front with speaker fabric underneath, what I actually just learned is that it's real, it's called grill mesh or grill cloth and it's a special fabric that allows the sound passed through without problems and I even found it, you can get it in the land of fabrics, but then, my friends, we found this, what do you call this aluminum sheet?
Wow, okay, this is like a sheet of aluminum that we found at the hardware store and it's probably used for cool covers or for me. I don't really know anything, but this little pattern is so cute, it's like painting like a woven cane, if translated to metal, it's so precious, so I was thinking, couldn't we just use it for the front of our speaker cover , so we brought it? We tested it with the speaker and putting it in front really didn't affect the sound quality at all, so I think we're going to try using this guy because it's very beautiful, so before I attach this, what I want to do is use some trim of wood to make a sort of picture frame around this to make it easy to nail to the rest of the pieces, so I'm using this piece of simple wood molding and cutting four pieces at an angle on a miter box. and a miter saw is a super simple way to cut wood at an angle, but just make sure you cut it the right way, you can cut at an angle, no, it has to be this type of angle cut, not this type of angle cut, I mean.
I hope I know why you're not good. The DIY is an oval water track, so the two rounds baby, they are cut that way anyway, you see there is a difference, the angles are on different sides of the wood, this is the one we want, the goal is to make the wooden frame. It will be exactly the same size as the back piece I cut earlier. Yoda will be incredibly cute, so now it's time to assemble the frame and all the other pieces I cut out earlierwith a little wood glue. A little trick is to use a stapler. to hold the wood angles together while the glue dries and then they are very easy to remove after it has completely dried, so once the box in front of the frame is dry I will stain all the pieces with a wood stain dark brown.
Now we're going to jump back to that sheet of metal that I keep wanting to call woven Kane metal, even though it's not woven, it just looks like we're going to use this piece now to make the remaining front part, so what? What we're going to do is take that picture frame piece that we had made and place it on top and trace that size and then cut it out. You can actually cut these things with normal scissors which honestly cut like butter, but the only thing I'm thinking is. It will probably dull your scissors a bit, so don't use your favorite pair for this.
I know you have a favorite pair. I have a favorite pair. It's like getting your knives, so you have like a favorite kitchen knife to use. Paper prices are still the same. I probably won't use those for this and then I'll take this piece outside and spray paint it gold once the gold paint is dry I'll hot glue it to the back of the wood frame and then once it's dragon and I'll take all of this Complete the front piece and use a little wood glue to glue it to the rest of the box we assembled earlier.
Okay, and once it's completely dry, this is what the new speaker cover looks like. It's much prettier. I love how the gold and wood look. together so well so all that's left to do is put these not so treble speakers in and make them super adorable and I also want to show you how much the sound quality of the speakers doesn't change that much at all once. we have this okay I'm going to play it just with the speaker as it's not bad so for our next DIY something we should all make cute is this iconic lamp.
I swear I had one from Walmart when I was in college. Ikea guy, I don't know why, but it's this popular 15th lamp that everyone has. Wow I just wasn't going to offend some people like everyone that's this lamp but I think it doesn't look very unique since a lot of people have it but it's also very affordable so I understand why you buy the lamp because you say: Wow, I can buy that lamp. It cost me $10. Wow, it costs me less than a good meal, so I'm absolutely going to blow my plan. To recycle this is not fully developed, so you'll have to come with me on this journey, but my plan is to basically change these shades and maybe add some kind of interlocking table elements to make everything a little bit. renewed and also less random because I feel like this arm is random, I guess this lights up your broom and this lights up your like a specific area, I don't know but we're going to get into it so I think the first thing to do is remove these lampshades and see what we're working with so I don't even know how it's done maybe we'll remove the label bless the bulb so we actually already picked up a new bulb which I just want to see where it went oh oh oh I don't know if any of these will work no this guy seems too small oh my god we just started this there can't be a crisis already I hate when the light goes out The bulbs are not standard for example can we just go to the hardware store and buy a light bulb for this?
Yes, that's too small. No, this is normal. It's too big. It's somewhere between a normal light bulb and a baby boomer, but in the meantime, let's get on with our. the second light has a, oh, dusty, cool, okay, easy, it already looks better, that says a lot, so what we also got from Ikea that we are recycling are IKEA products with more IKEA products, but you can do any type lampshade or something like that. What we need is this cross piece so we can attach it to our hole here so this can go like this having this literally birria you see the bulb so it's going to go like this which is great it makes it tall and substantial it's not my problem here. is that the little screw-in piece doesn't fit over the top of this and sometimes the bulbs can hold everything in place but that doesn't seem to be the case as it just sits on top of it and then usually this screws down to hold everything.
Instead this is too small to fit over all of this, which means I can't screw it down to keep it firmly in place, which is weird because that's how IKEA things usually work, you don't know what they were thinking, but now I need to think of a solution, hopefully we have the right lamp here. I think it's like looking for a camp, anything from hunting, don't draw, hello deactivator, hello wise deactivator, they made it hot, they say, what is this? Okay, so this is what I was looking for it's super vintage, but it just clips onto the light bulb, that would be really easy, but like I'm going to put this screen on it so I can hack this, okay, so this one can go in any direction and it has the same mechanism as the IKEA one, I just don't know if it will fit on top.
I don't know what this is. This is new. It doesn't have the right accessory, but maybe this accessory can be used with this one. attachment, I feel like this is my favorite right now so I came back from my travels and what ended up happening is I picked up this lampshade that I'm only going to use because it has a little Clippy metal thing inside because this is the only one I can finding it seems like a bit of a DIY elbow but honestly it's $2.00 and it's like the right cable so I'm going to use this one and I also bought this new screen and together we'll make a beautiful new screen. so let's put these objects together to make a really cute lampshade, so I used some wire cutters to cut the little bulb clip off my little lampshade and then I folded the wires up, flipped them over the top of my other screen and I was able to wrap those wires around the remaining posts and secure them with electrical tape.
Now I know this may seem a little complicated right now, but I saved a lot of money by not buying one of these things on Amazon. This is exactly what I needed for the situation, but I was able to hack it and you're not going to see this because it's so high up, so unless you're like 7 feet tall, he's not going to see it. I took a moment of reflection. Insert my moment of reflection here and I decided that this little arm here is going to get a paint job and it's going to be matte black and so I'm hoping it doesn't look so cheap just because I can replace the light bulb here. but this little piece of plastic I don't really know how to remove properly and I think it would look weird if the bulb came out of here and it was bare, you know, so that's what I'm going to do there with my lampshade here and a little bit of cork that I found in our drawer because that's what we do when we need inspiration, we just look through the drawers.
I'm going to add a cork detail to this lampshade and this will tie everything together. That's nice, that's what I'm going to do now. I taped all the parts I didn't want to paint and took it outside and honestly gave it a coat, it was super easy, yeah I think it's one and I did it once inside. I removed all the paper and now it's drying and I'm going to move on to the lampshade now. Can I get an office jerk? Thank you. I put on a peculiar accent. I show you this cool quark quark top or bottom border as a third. or like half thanks office Paul, you're fired, okay, so for my screen I'm going to cork the bottom third.
I came up with that idea only like in India, so I'm Confucian, don't ask questions, just move on. I don't know why they hate measuring once, trying late once, and then cutting once because the lamp has this curve. I need to make a template with a curve, you can't just cut something straight, so now I'm measuring four inches from my curved edge. I think it will work, yes, I see it fits. If I cut it straight, it would fit, so now I can use this my cork, but it looks nice. We like this, so I can easily.
I'm attaching my lampshade to the bulb here and I think this looks really fancy and then I've got my little spray painted arm here and I think the key is to have it in this position because this is what's going to work in my next step I think that something One of the reasons why this lamp looks a little strange is because this arm is like a strange limb. This will work great if I put it in this position and do my next DIY, which is this kind of cool, twisted tray from Ikea. In fact, I'm going to turn it into a little table and it will be a nesting table that will go great with the lamp, which means that this little arm will be like my own table lamp, so I think my first step is to cut off the legs and for that I picked up some pegs here and what size are they one inch and 1/8?
That's how big the bear is. I'm going to cut them into two feet and use three feet total, so I drilled the hole for the top center of my dowel making sure it was very straight and I made it so that it was maybe about an inch on the side of the stud visible and then I was able to screw in the rest of the bolts using pliers to just twist it, it's in there nice and tight and I did it three times and they fit really well on my little plates here so they go the way of days, rookie mistake.
I bought small wood screws thinking I could screw this to the bottom of my tray. but spoiler alert, it may look like it's a thick tray, but it sinks, so this thickness is not thick enough to screw on, so I'm going to glue them together, but before I get to that part I have to do this a nesting table because I want it to fit and hug my lamp and to achieve that I'm going to drill a hole in the center that's a little bit bigger than my lamp post and then I'm going to take my circular saw and cut two straight ones. lines to find the edges of that hole which then makes this indentation that my lamp can now slide into the center of my table and then I went ahead and chiseled the feet that were on the tray just because they're going to get in the way of putting on my own feet, so I have my legs here with the furniture plate attachment, so I'm actually going to do three of these.
I'll make two on each side of the slit and then one on the top I want. put them as close to the edge as possible to make sure they don't interfere with the base of the lamp, and like I said before, I'll have to glue them on with some good old construction adhesive and some clamps. Since I can't really screw this thin layer on I let it dry, it's fully cured now so I can do it and I think if I had to do this again I wouldn't make such a big cut because I feel like it's compromised.
I like this tray to be a little crooked, so if yes, if I had to do it again, I think I would make a smaller hole and also not let this indentation go in as far. Okay, I'm just going to use an Exacto knife to clean up some of the construction adhesive here and then my next step is to add some corks to the bottom of the table legs just to incorporate the whole cork element and finish off these legs in one nice way and The last thing I did was cut two small squares of cork, put them together with the sticky side and then traced a cup to create a coaster, so now everything is complete.
I have my lamp here. I have my table that will fit very well. with a matching cork coaster. Overall, I think this is really cute and I think there are a lot of different ways you can customize a lamp base like this. This is just one way. Let me know if you have this lamp and what you would do to it because I feel like the lampshade especially is a place where you can be quite creative. Thank you very much for tuning in to this week's episode if you like it and learn something. from there, subscribe, why am I holding the ruler?
I don't know how much fun you had in today's video, so much fun, okay, see you next week.
