Finally... A Silksong Update!

May 01, 2020
After over five months of complete silence, team Cherry

finally

decided to honor us, the masses, with an

update

for Hollow Knight: Silksong. The last

update

we received was a post-E3 update in June, which I never actually covered on this channel because I'm lazy. So I'll talk about that too and delve into my interactions with the Cherry team at PAX Australia. But keep in mind that since many of these conversations occurred in bars or places with easy access to alcohol, my memory may not be at its best. I also want to use this video to address some of these release date rumors floating around out there.

Basically, try to make this bitch last longer than 10 minutes. If you don't like that, sue me. This update confirms something that should have been pretty obvious. Team Cherry still makes the game. I see all these people saying that Team Cherry is spontaneously releasing the game, or that it's actually already finished. Well, it's not. The Cherry team has even worked hard during the crisis months to stay on schedule. In October, William told me they had a crunch month in August, and were planning to do it again in November. I also asked Team Cherry about the scope of Silksong, or if it would be more or less linear like Hollow Knight.

More Interesting Facts About,

finally a silksong update...

I'm not interested in answering those questions, but in the latest update we can see that Silksong can easily become bigger than Hollow Knight. Team Cherry just added their 165th enemy to the game. This puts Silksong at roughly the same number as Hollow Knight. If Team Cherry plans to continue, this will easily surpass Hollow Knight in total number of enemies. The blog post gave us a look at the three newest enemies, two of which are just silhouettes. Team Cherry describes these creatures as members of a scientific group, former caretakers of a dusty vault full of ancient knowledge.

These enemies will fight Hornet together as a deadly trio protecting each other's weaknesses. This is exciting because the only fight that has had three bosses at the same time is the sister fight in Hollow Knicht, and this is probably one of the best fights in the game. And because of Hornet's greater speed and mobility, I suspect this new battle will be even more intense. Even more interesting is that these characters once guarded a vault of knowledge. I assume they were guarding some kind of library, probably located in the Golden City we've heard so much about. This four-legged friend of ours seems to come from that area.

I've seen some people say that he looks like the Godseeker, but two characters of the same color doesn't mean they're related. I mean, is the Gorgeous Husk related to the Godseeker? Are Grimaces and Thanos related to Waluigi? But the best part of this update is the release of two new songs from the Silksong soundtrack. Chrisopher Larkin, who of course writes the music for Silksong again, but this time he has Team Cherry's golden money. Most of Hollow Knight's music was created digitally, but this time the music was performed and recorded, with performances by members of the Adelaide Symphony Orchestra.
Additionally, Silksong's music will predominantly feature string instruments rather than piano. The two pieces we have now are truly incredible. The Lace theme is whimsical and exciting, the Bonebottom theme is somber, similar to many of the Hollow Knight songs, but still sounds fresh and original. There are apparently 30 Silksong songs at the moment. Now Team Cherry points out that this pushes Silksong above Hollow Knight's 26 songs, but Hollow Knight included an additional 15 songs on the Gods and Nightmares soundtrack. And technically there are even more songs because the soundtrack actually leaves out other covers and other smaller songs. In other words, 30 songs isn't really impressive.
Sorry, Christopher Larkin, but you better do better than that. From this post we also learn that Team Cherry will continue with the name "Bonebottom" and that it will be the starting location in Silksong. And honestly, I'm getting used to the name. In reality it has a certain poetic symmetry. In Hollow Knight, the starting town is called Dirtmouth. So as the knight entered Hallownest, Hornet enters Pharloom through the ass. And that's all we have for this news update. Basically, Team Cherry is still working on the game and adding more and more content. Team Cherry also wants to emphasize that they are not just adding content.
But let them know what they are doing. I honestly don't care, they could add a whole side quest where Hornet uses his spider powers to deliver pizza in Manhattan and I'd still be playing that damn shit. I want to go back and talk about some of the older updates that we have that I didn't do in previous videos, but first let's talk a little bit about the release date speculation. There are a few "leaks" in quotes that have appeared in the last 9 months. Basically, Steam requires developers to post a release date for a game when they are added to the database.
Team Cherry probably set a date of June 12, 2020 as a placeholder, but that date somehow ended up being public. There is no way to know if Team Cherry chose this date on purpose or just as a random date with no meaning. If it was their original target date, it looks like they'll miss it due to their desire to just add shit to the game. So I'm sticking with my release date of mid to late 2020. But that's just my opinion. According to Team Cherry, the game runs on Cherry time, so it will be released when it's ready. Another aspect we can discuss is development time.
According to Team Cherry, development on Silksong began just a few months after Hollow Knight was published, which would mean that the game has been in development for almost 3 years, while Hollow Knight was in development from November 2014 to February 2017. Logically, Silksong should be almost complete. But I want to mention some details. Team Cherry worked on Hollow Knight for Kickstarter for about 6 months. After the Kickstarter, they had to port the entire game to Unity and William had to learn the new engine himself. After finishing Hollow Knight, Dave Kazi left team Cherry, leaving William and Ari to work on Silksong, as well as the numerous Hollow Knight content packs.
So the team size was smaller for quite a while after Hollow Knight came out. They also had to work with Sharkjump Studios to port the game to Switch, PS4, and Xbox One. It wasn't until 2018 that Team Cherry hired Jack Vine to help with development. And we all know that Jack Vine sucks at code, so he probably won't add anything to development. So yes, Silksong has been in development for almost 3 years, but a lot of other things have been happening at the same time. That being said, Silksong is built on Hollow Knight's code. William said designing bosses and enemies is even easier now that they have a huge database of other enemy codes they can use.
Or he said something like, I have no idea, I'm not a game developer or programmer, so I just stuck with them and nodded my head. So yes, there are a lot of things we can speculate about in terms of release date. My general rule is that the longer it lasts, the more content we can get. So I don't really care. Let's turn our attention to the June update that the Cherry team had. In this update we have been given a name for this boring looking area: Greymoor. This area is full of misty fields and ruined towers.
This area is filled with creatures called Crawbugs, which are described as poaching species. The ancient acquisition of this country is haunted. It seems that being "haunted" in Silksong is almost the same as being "infected" in Hollow Knight. That means you can kill these people without feeling bad, and that's a good thing. At the top of Greymoor there are cockroaches in cages. These creatures have an insatiable appetite and reproduce very quickly. I don't think we saw any dust clouds, but I guess it's good to know we did. Finally, Team Cherry explains that Greymoor is one of the largest areas they have ever created and that Hornet will discover many mysteries there, as well as make new friends and fight a deadly and rewarding enemy.
Now, this rewarding enemy may refer to Lace, but I suspect there are a ton of such rewarding enemies in this game. This update also confirms that Silksong uses the same card system as Hollow Knight. But this time Hornet replaces Shakra instead of Cornifer. Shakra searches for his teacher, who has disappeared under mysterious circumstances. Shakra is part of a clan, each of them has their own Craft-Skill. So we're likely to see a lot of critters like Shakra during Hornet's adventure. At the end of this post, Team Cherry mentions that they have reached out to people in the Hollow Knight community to provide voices.
William and Ari provided the vast majority of votes for Hollow Knight, but it seems like they've decided to outsource this to the community, probably because they're a bunch of lazy developers. Lace's voice was provided by Mitsuki Hashimoto, an active member of the Hollow Knight fan art community. And I know what you're thinking. No, I didn't record any lines for Silksong. But I'm taking expensive singing lessons in case Team Cherry decides to call me. And now I have some more update details ahead of the June update where Team Cherry talked about some of the different characters in the game.
The name of this character is confirmed Trobbio. He is the Master of the Stage, the Brush and the Voice. He is a flamboyant butterfly who seeks fame and adoration throughout Pharloom. And as of now he is my favorite character. We also have some more details about Sherma. Apparently she needs constant help. No surprise here. He is also described as an optimistic pilgrim on a spiritual journey. The whole bug concept goes to Pharloom, as there's been something of a pilgrimage since Silksong was announced, but it turns out this idea has been around for quite some time. We recently gained access to the original Hollow Knight historical document that team Cherry provided to their supporters after the Kickstarter ended.
This document is clearly very old and nothing in it should be considered canon. But in the area description section it mentions the Forest of Bones, an isolated Hollow Knight area that seems to have been transferred to Silksong. This document mentions that the insects would make pilgrimages to the Forest of Bones to find the Sacred Grounds. We only have one image of the Sacred Grounds, but is there any chance this area also ends up in Silksong? I suspect it would be very different, considering there are Dreamers masks plastered all over the walls. But maybe a place like this is where Sherma and other critters go.
We also have more information about Garmond and Zaza. It is explained that these two are looking for a new home, and that while Garmond speaks, Zaza is the smarter one. I don't know how I feel about this relationship, but I'm going to avoid asking too many questions here. Imagine riding a horse that is smarter than you. That wouldn't be fun, you'd just feel like an idiot. And the latest information we have concerns the Ant Queen we saw in the Silksong reveal trailer. Her name is Hunter Queen Carmelitia and William told me that she is actually a supporting character.
That brings the total number of confirmed support chiefs to three out of six. There are still three bosses and dungeons promised during Kickstarter that have yet to be released. Made. I'll see you all after the next Team Cherry update whenever that may be. I think...April.
