Ford fuel tank switching issues, tank filling from the other, gas vs diesel systems all explained

Jan 14, 2022
hey folks welcome back so we're going back a little bit in time to, I guess, I think around the year 1997. and we're going to talk about

fuel

tank

switches, particularly trucks from, say, '92 and up. . thru 1996 1997 this will work for the f-150, 250 and 350 obviously this is mostly gas engines and we have two topics here one is a

diesel

one is a gas and we are going to talk about the two different ways huh , that's been done, you know, switch the

tank

s from front to back so anyway we're going to get a different huh camera view and talk about the truck that we're having the problem with and then we'll talk about the

other

one, um , no problem but it's a totally different setup so we'll go over that so we get an idea of what's going on so ok this pickup here is a 1996 f-250 7.5 liter I'm guessing a gas engine 460 and what we had problem with was when this was running low f the rear tank the rear tank um started to empty faster than it should and then all of a sudden the front tank was

filling

up and then gas was coming out of the vent or the

filling

, basically I mean that's all. it was getting too full so it's basically transferring it's kind of transferring

fuel

from inside rear tank to front tank the truck was running fine you switch to the rear and switch out of the front tank and you don't have that problem , the rear tank doesn't overfill or anything, essentially what we're going to have to do is change the fuel pump module, uh, the whole module and everything in the front tank, um and actually, we're going to doing the rear tank one just as a precaution but when you have that problem we'll talk about the difference between this system and the

other

and just let you know this is a 1997 this is a 7.3 horsepower hit so when you turn off nline and start looking you know trying to follow you know different information and stuff talking about these uh tank switches you know everybody is talking about the tank valve and all that kind of stuff stuff because I think the old um

ford

s from in the 80's either gas or

diesel

had a real valve shifting not 100 sure I didn't work on them back then and haven't seen a lot of the old diesels um, they very rarely do.

I see you know way too many of these um here at one time, which is why I said we're just going back, you know, going back in time here 1997. Anyway, you know what you'll find is you know everyone. say where is this valve where is that valve and you know they're going to say it's located inside the frame rail on the left side about halfway down so we're going to take a look at the one on this truck okay so let's go under here you have your front tank and if you read something like technica parlance or something like that they call it the center tank and then your rear tank is on top of where the spare tire is which is called your aft tank anyway so right here next to this front tank this is the valve and so we're going to talk about what this valve does but you can see the electrical plug and on the back there are several different fuel lines going back and forth , here are your two main fuel lines here, your supply and return, but back there you're going to have oh maybe four sixes, I think there are six different lines there and I'll explain what we have to do differently with those, as So anyway, uh, let's talk about this, okay, this truck has a mechanical lift. bomb in motor valley i think the 97 still does it in the 99 they changed that from a uh it's electric now you know till uh 03 but for the 7.3 anyway um neon on the old seven three and even the six nines it was still a mechanical transfer pump and it was quite ran a lot with a valve it didn't actually look like that but it was similar in nature but anyway like I said it has a mechanical mechanical lift pump which will be drawn from any of the tanks for which it is selected. you need the valve because you have your supply coming in and you have your return fuel coming back so what that valve does is the tank you have selected select the front tank you want the supply to draw from the front tank but i also want the return back to the same tank and that's exactly what this truck is doing now with the gas engine and this is going to be the same on the old body style F-150s from '91 or '92 um through 1996. um in '97 they changed to a body style newer and they just had a bigger tank so this can probably also include the 1997 f2 and 350 which would run on a 351 or a 460 gas or whatever and so this truck has a valve which doesn't have ok so , if we go back to the same place we were before midships or front tank, then below or above the spare tire is your back or rear tank and so as you go through the r iel of the frame, you have your return and main fuel supply going up. and all you have is the fuel filter you don't have the valve now if you follow the rest of these lines you'll find they're all attached ok let's talk about what's going on ok so on these gas pick up the f-150 and of the two and 350 that have gas engines have a fuel pump on each of the tanks and basically all your selector switch does that guy there all it does is just switch to which one so if you choose the front tank is going to turn on the pump for the front tank and which prevents the gas from coming back let's say the rear tank has a check valve basically inside the fuel tank module and I wish I had one of those but I don't have one yet one of those because I haven't gotten this one out yet, so anyway that's what keeps it from going back to the, you know, if you're running on the front tank, it keeps it coming back, you know, back, you know, back, or I'm kinda confused basic amente ok so it selects the front tank um actually let's take this truck as an example um it's running the rear tanks it selects the rear tank it turns on the pump on the rear tank and turns off the pump for the front tank it's now pumping here and if you had a fuel gauge you know hooked up right here you know that that fuel pump is supplying fuel pressure to your injection rail through that um under frame filler filter we just looked at and so , because it's coming out of the rear tank, your front tank should have a check valve to prevent fuel from going back into that front tank while the check valve has failed on this truck, allowing fuel to go back to the front tank while running down the back tank m It's not supposed to happen, so if you have, say, a problem where you know it works on a tank and it doesn't iona on another tank then essentially you probably have a problem with the fuel pump on that particular tank either one doesn't get away so you know you troubleshoot differently than you would um those you know like these if you have if it works on one tank and it doesn't work on another tank um you probably have a line blockage of some sort in the tank itself from the lines going to the valve or maybe the valves aren't working as they're supposed to which usually i've never seen them do that usually they just work or they don't work or they work and they blow the fuse every time you try to use it there's all those kinds of problems but essentially this thing you know just doesn't have the

switching

valve real you have this pickup and it's like i said this would be the same for the 1994 f-15 0 with the 300 inline six if you have the option of two two tanks of gas it will be set up like this there is a pump in each tank and there are only revised valves to prevent return fuel from not coming back. or just going back to the tank that you're running low on is what they do, that's how they work, um, you know, in our case, what we're going to have to do, you know, we're going down. this front tank and we're going to replace that fuel pump module because it's all done in-house inside there and that's what we're going to have to do to fix this we're also going to drop the rear tank and just swap out the module the fuel pump just because um you know the customer wants to keep this truck pretty reliable so um we need to do that and that's just what we're going to do to end up fixing this problem so hopefully this will um clear everything up um you know because sometimes it can be hard to find information on, uh, trucks that old because you know there are tons of forums from even like you know 13 14 years ago or something and you're just reading all of that and it's just tons of information damn that some is partly right, partly wrong, partly none of your concern, you know what you're looking at if you wanted to do this to clarify everything you know about the two of you. different types of

systems

you have and what ways to fix it so if you have the diesel you will have to fix it a different way.

I have not seen diesel engines fill up from tank to tank. that but it wasn't a common problem but it is common enough in gasoline engines for this problem to occur and so I hope this helps if you have any questions just shoot them in the comments. I will do my best to answer. answer them but anyway thanks for looking gram
