Extreme DIY Small Bathroom Makeover (Renter Friendly) | diy floor tiling & diy shelves

Jun 02, 2021
Hello guys, welcome back to my channel today. I'll take you through my journey redecorating my

bathroom

now that I just moved into a new apartment. None of the apartments are decorated adequately. The

bathroom

is the first room I am in. tackling I love how it turned out guys, I'm amazed at how much I transformed it from looking a little old to looking brand new, super my style, I hope you like it too, so without further ado, let's get started. Let me show you what the bath looks like and I got it going, so this is before the bath.

It's a pretty standard condo bathroom, I'd say, but there are some things I just don't love. There are some accessories here. which don't necessarily match so this for example is chrome and this is brushed nickel this one is also brushed nickel but it also shows some signs of wear the paint job itself is not one hundred percent so if you look down at the bottom you can see there is some paint missing in some sections and then the lamp here is an Ikea lamp but the problem is you can see the plate behind it which just doesn't look any better so this is start point.

More Interesting Facts About,

Guys it's not bad it's just not 100% my style and there are definitely some parts that could be refinished to be a little nicer and then I started plugging those holes and painting the room a nice crisp white so the color What I'm using is bear and it's called jasmine that blooms at night and is a nice warm white color. Once I was done, I installed a new light fixture which I really liked because it is much neater and cleaner. Then I took the cabinet. powder room doors so I could transform them and work on them and I actually decided to use some faux wood contact paper and this bidc test solution and it looks really cool so basically I just cut pieces of contact paper to approximate size and I used a squeegee to apply it like this.

I also used a hair dryer to remove any

small

air bubbles and get it very crispy around the edges of the cabinet doors and it worked great. I used a screwdriver and scissors to cut. I knocked out the holes where the mounting holes were and then screwed the cabinet back to the vanity, okay I just finished the cabinets they look good the way they would look now and the next thing I'm going to do is actually change the countertop so that right now, if they are a little old-fashioned, they are like warm marble. I just don't love the look.

I think it would look a lot better if it was more on the off-white side. I went ahead and looked at like 500 different types of marble contact paper to see if I could find one that looked legit and I think I found a really good one and boy, was I wrong? Well, I'm that devastated right now. There are like these bubbles, you can see them very clearly when you're right on top of the counter, so I don't know, I guess I'll wait until tomorrow, see if by some miracle it gets better if it works well. I'll continue making the back and side pieces and if not I'll try the other contact paper I have so I ended up changing the contact paper because I hated how it looked and this is what it looks like.
Now I'm going to add caulk to all of these little lines and around the sink as well to finish it off and make it look nice. I also changed the hardware here to be black instead of silver because I think it shows up too much. It's better, but so far I like how it's going, it's a big transformation, y'all toupee transformation, so next I'm just going to install some new accessories that I bought. The first one is a matte black toilet paper holder and I'm actually just using it. an existing hole that was in the old toilet paper holder, so I don't have to make any new ones next.
I have this old nickel brush hand towel holder that I had in my last two apartments and I want to convert it to matte black. just to match everything so I hand painted it with spray paint so it won't make a mess and I'm installing it too except this one goes on the wall next to the sink and I know why they did that. I don't install it here and it's totally because if you open the medicine cabinet door it will hit the towel bar and potentially break the mirror, but I've thought of a solution for this so I'll bring these felt

floor

protectors that are actually designed for furniture and I'm just cutting them in half, I'm removing the adhesive backing and then I'm putting two layers on top of each other to make it a little bit thicker and putting them in three different places behind the mirror, okay?
So a little update, now I've added two here, two here and two violations down here and when I open the door, this is where it stops them, so success, the only thing is that I definitely need to paint them black because this weird beige color. The color doesn't look good. I hope you can see it now. You can barely see that sticky tab, so that's the goal after that. I wanted to install some towel hooks so I bought these black ones on Amazon and just attached them. on the wall near where the old towel rack was.
I just went ahead and changed the power covers, honestly this is only two dollars and having those new white covers looks so much better so I highly recommend doing X, it's so easy. do too, okay, so I'm just going to be here on the bathroom

floor

and the next thing I'm going to do is install some of these floor tiles when you remove them, which I'm going to have to do. when I move on it will leave a sticky residue that you can easily remove. This is the pattern I chose. I think it will light up the entire space.
I see this as a beige floor. I'm just not a big fan of this so I think it will be better because it will brighten everything up. I hope this is a little easier than contact paper, but gosh, to install the floor you basically just peel off the paper backing and stick the tiles for the pieces where you need to cut them to size. I just used a box cutter and scored it twice and then I was able to bend the tiles and then I was able to cut them with the box cutter. So it was super easy once again, just removing the backing paper and gluing it in place, this probably took me about four hours straight but I love the way it turned out.
Honestly, it makes the bathroom look so much newer, okay? I wanted to put some

shelves

in the bathroom and I found that in my stash there is a perfect piece of wood that I think I already managed to make a shelf about five years ago and somehow I still have it, but the thing is, I want two.

shelves

and this is not big enough to have two shelves and one of my storage boxes. I found this guys this is basically the piece of wood I actually used to try to make a shelf all those years ago except I painted it white with acrylic paint I think I liked one coat sorely but as you can see it's the same thickness and the square edge.
I'm so happy I saved this piece of wood that I thought was trash because now I can have some magical shells. I'll have to figure out how to cut them to size because I don't have a circular saw, so I may have to use a hand saw, which I do have. I guess I can cut it straight. I mean, no. I know we'll find out. Let me start removing the rest of the white paint. I'll give you some sand. I'll cut it to size and then rotate the ammo. The rest of it, so I'm actually using acetone, which is a nail polish remover to remove the initial layer of white paint, and it worked pretty well, but I realized that it definitely needed to be sanded quite a bit.
I actually started by sanding it by hand with a very coarse piece of sandpaper and once it was all sanded and I could see the pretty color through it and I was happy. I went ahead and marked the length of the piece of wood and then taking my hand saw I just went back and forth manually cutting the piece of wood to the right size and honestly I'm not very strong so I could only take the saw in one direction, which is to pull it towards me. I couldn't push it, but after doing it back and forth I was able to cut it, woohoo, then once.
Again, just using that sandpaper, I sanded the edge so it's nice and smooth and also went over the initial piece of wood that I'm using for the other shelf so the two colors match next. I removed these shelf supports. from Amazon and I just went ahead and installed them and once all my brackets are in place it's time to attach it to the wall so I drilled some pilot holes and put in anchors and then I'm just using my screwdriver one more time to screw it to the wall and honestly they are so sturdy and hardly damage the wall that it will be very easy for me to fix them when I move so once again I show you how to use my drill by drilling the pilot holes by hitting the little anchors. that I'm using and then screw it to the wall once again.
I want to make sure the screws look super seamless, so I'm using some black acrylic paint and literally just painting those screws silver to match. I actually changed this. brush for an even thinner one so I can get in there without a mess and honestly it works so perfectly you couldn't even see those screws after that so next I really wanted to add some art prints on top of the rope hugs. on the main bathroom wall and I'm about to share with you one of my most coveted DIY hacks that I haven't heard anyone talk about and it's basically a site called unsplash and the artists have uploaded their photos for free and they are high resolution and you can very easily download them, print them and frame them yourself, so I'm not going to lie.
I ran to the feet and was looking for boho prints and then found a couple different ones. sellers who had thousands and thousands and thousands of different photographs that were of different types and I thought there was no way they would take all of these photos, so I decided to search without washing similar words that were in the images, for example, like cactus or desert . and I actually found the exact images I was looking for, I found the images I wanted, I downloaded them and then I went ahead and just adjusted the colors to match exactly what I was looking for, then I used online staples and I got them.
Printed and shipped to me, so these are the three prints I chose, although I only actually ended up using two of them. I'm just using an exact knife to cut off the excess material and then I'll put them into frames, initially. I wanted to put these photos in a nice wooden frame but I couldn't find any online that were reasonably priced since everything is closed, but I found these Reba frames from Ikea and thought I'd put contact paper in them and the contact paper I'm using is actually exactly the same one I used on the vanity cabinet.
I cut four pieces of contact paper, one for each side. I made sure to cut the contact paper at an angle on each corner so it actually looks like four pieces of wood that are coming together to make this frame and this is what they looked like when all the contact paper was on and then once that the prints were inside, they already looked super cute and then I went ahead and assembled them. and as I mentioned before, I only ended up using two of them in this bathroom. I then added some clean white towels to those hooks and then decorated the shelves on the top shelf.
I'm starting with this tray that I actually made. in my dollar store diy video, I love it and then this is a simple gold frame that I bought at a thrift store. Then I have this glass vase with dots around it that I bought from a Canadian dollar store that I love and this is actually a glass phaser that I got from Dollar Tree that I painted with chalk paint in colonial ivory. The final piece here is adding a piece of pumice that I collected in a field in the suburbs and now on the bottom shelf, the first one.
One thought piece is this idea from Vaes, also from the dollar store material. This is in another video. I'm just adding some pieces of dried eucalyptus that I've had hanging around for a while and the next I'm just adding a few bottles. which are beautifully packaged so they can be displayed, they all match my color scheme and then I add this pretty amber candle that I also had in my previous bathroom and the final piece I add to this The shelf is actually a tassel garland DIY and to make this I'm basically using some wooden beads that I bought on Amazon as well as a couple of packages of this craft cord from Dollar Tree using a piece of cardboard from the cord and I'm wrapping the cord several times until I have a package good size.
I then take two very long pieces of cord and wrap them through the bundle we just created, cutting the bottom of that bundle and then double knotting the pieces at the top. Next, I take a

small

er piece of cord and tie it about a half inch down from the top of the tassel. I give it a nice double knot so it's nice and secure and then I'm trimming it. at the bottom of the tassels so that they are all the same starting with the bees. I am simplythreading the beads onto the cord and then, what I have left about two inches on the cord, I'm starting to make another tassel.
Here I follow the same type of method, except this time I'm using the end of the garland, threading it through the bundle and tying it twice there. I love how this one turned out and I just added it right behind the candle to finish the The shelf is now moving. I'm using this, a hand towel from H&M in ocher is currently out of stock but I love it so much and then on the bathroom counter I'm adding this popular little green plant that I bought at a dollar store and then I'm reusing this soap golden. dispenser that I had in my last apartment because I love it and I also stopped using this textured white shower curtain because I think it's just amazing and finally I added this pretty rest color: bath rug from Bed Bath & Beyond. and guys, I'm so excited to show you how my bathroom turned out, but honestly, guys, I've never been happier with how everything turned out in my life.
I just can't believe I pulled off this aesthetic from start to finish. Honestly, the floor looks new, this looks new, this is so cute, I can't believe I built these shelves like this, it's a big accomplishment for me, I hope you like it a lot, okay, then it's time for the true true?
