opened in 1952 as a segregated

school

for African American students. It would soon be desegregated after the 1954 Supreme Court decision, but the student body remained almost 100 percent African. -American throughout the life of the school in 2013, the DC school district permanently closed Spingarn citing declining enrollment and excessive costs associated with modernizing the old building. Since then, the school has been

abandoned
