Everything Nick Offerman Does In a Day | Vanity Fair
Aug 07, 2023Hi, I'm Nick Offerman and this is
everything
I do in a day for the purposes of this experiment. I'll just give you a typical day where I would go to work in my woodworking shop all day in Los Angeles. Ideally I get up at 6:00. In the morning I use the alarm on my phone because I can make it quiet and soft so as not to wake up my sleeping girlfriend. I never hit snooze. I do my best to quietly slip out of the bedroom and down the stairs to the breakfast area I have two hard-boiled eggs good, clean grass Fred's pasture-raised eggs you really make a difference in both my life and the chicken's I eat probably a serving bigger blueberries than I should A heaping spoonful of almond butter and a coffee, I drink my coffee black after breakfast, feed the dogs and then get in my car and hit the road to beat the traffic if I get stuck or as we call it, stuck in some kind of thick rush hour that can take up a lot of time. at an hour and 17 minutes they should be listening to the radio and listening to a lot of music, but the older I get, the more I seem to listen to audiobooks and podcasts.I can get to the carpentry shop, let's say at 7:30, it's a warehouse where five employees and I make things out of wood. The first thing I do when I get to the store is open the door, walk into the office and generally smell the best Corinthian leather, walnut, mahogany, teak dust. First thing in the morning, first thing in the morning, I make a cup of black coffee, turn on the lights and maybe put on some music and get ready for the day's work, if you do things in a carpentry shop. You're not doing much if you just sit there look at your phone chew the fat with your neighbor if there's someone else nearby I check in, it's important to know what everyone is doing during the day in case more than one wants to use a station or machine to that they can strategize with each other, but then pretty quickly and I'll dive right into the morning tasks, anything that requires arithmetic or fine precision or a high degree of security or I'll focus on the best things to do in the morning when I'm done.
You had your coffee and you are ready for the carpentry. Lunch is at 1:00 p.m. There is a bell that will ring for dinner and you can join in or you can eat alone if you are antisocial. I eat salads with chicken and quinoa, avocado, and sriracha dressing to liven up my lunch hour. There is a moment of respite that usually lasts 6 to 7 minutes, that's when mischief is welcome at the lunch table. Everyone is responsible for washing their own dishes. We finished lunch in 30 to 45 minutes. After lunch, you'll feel a little slower, which is why activities like sanding or finishing any repeatable activity that
does
n't require a high degree of precision are great for the hours after you launch.I usually finish around 4:00 and try to get across town by 4:00 p.m. m. In Los Angeles, all the freeways are garbage, so I now take the surface streets to get back to the water due to my years of experience and smart use of routes and alleys. I'm usually home in 45 minutes, hopefully my wife is there. Let's go exercise together. I run four miles and she walks strong. The route involves a steep half mile hill and it all takes me. I think the best time is between forty and forty-three minutes. I usually listen to a podcast for an audiobook.
If it's baseball season, there's a good chance you're listening to the Chicago Cubs play baseball against the losing team. When I finish running, I do some stretching, stretching, and following Chris Pratt's advice. I do one or two sets of fifty pushups then I'm ready for dinner it's a bit of a fancy night so I'm going to grill lamb chops I'm going to make an amazing corn dish corn my way sorry corn my way the recipe is in my third book called good clean fun and I'll make a nice salad sorry haters it's good for you we'll finish dinner around 7:00 to 7:30 p.m. m.
After the dishes are ready and the dogs' needs have once again been met, we will participate in one of two activities: Activity number one is watching an amazing TV show surrounded by our dogs or we will sit at the dining table , which is an inch and 3/4 inch slab of slippery elm and put together a puzzle while listening to an audiobook look at that when I get ready for bed I will wash I will brush my teeth if I need to I will floss and then I will change into pajamas flannel or wear slippers on my feet until I get to bed, at which point I take off the slippers and get into bed barefoot.
Ideally, I go to bed at 10:00 p.m. m. That gives me eight hours of sleep. That's really where it all starts. I get the right amount of sleep. That's all I do in a day.
