Elite's Darkest Day: The Gnosis/Cone Sector Debacle (Elite Dangerous)

Jul 09, 2022
Some of you innocent, bright-eyed rookie commanders might not know the story of the Gnosis Cone Sector Incident that divided the

dangerous

elite

community or rather united the outraged community. It was a dark day in the

dangerous

elite

and luckily for me, I was a part of it. and like most history looking back we can learn a few lessons F dev can in particular so sit back have some hot chocky and let the old grandpas tell you the story of the

cone

sector

debacle

of

gnosis

, first things first, what is a good

gnosis

? and yes i know it's pronounced gnosis nagano sister i'm not stupid well at least i'm not that stupid but if they didn't want it to be pronounced that way then they shouldn't have spelled it that way am i right? i have been mining lately and my cargoes are full of a my entitlement in short the gnosis is a huge independent scientific aircraft carrier owned and operated by your fellow commanders yes players who regularly go on deep space expeditions in the name of science and the discovery. many elite scientific studies go closer to the role-playing end of the spectrum all other experiments are more literal and seek to discover something useful than game mechanics just like with real science you find yourself in a universe governed by strange laws and you want to define them for explanatory scope and power, that is, you try to discover things that might be useful to you and others. a truly noble effort. a dangerous elite lends itself to it. the group that owns and runs the weapon. and basically those who run elite dangerous server side frontier developments or work with them to help them jump their science ship around this ship that acts as a transporter for player ships so you can dock and continue the journey and engage on these expeditions this is exactly what I and other elite dangerous explorers and scientists were doing on that fateful day.

We expected the expedition to be doomed, but we didn't expect how messy it would be. Unfortunately I didn't record Elite Dangerous back then so I don't have any footage, but there wouldn't be much to show anyway from my perspective due to the nature of the incident. . time from the beginning can on then planned to launch the ginoza cat do this cannon planned to launch the gnosis on september 6th 3304 or 2018 our time to land in a distant region of space known as the

cone

sector

the cone sector is unexplored due permission locks all its stars, reportedly some of the stars in the center of the cone sector were not permission locked but were surrounded by stars that were, and therefore Canon chose to target these unlocked stars for their jump or maybe they intended to jump to lock stars the whole time and despite F dev being aware of this flight plan they did nothing to prevent it from registering.

This gave the community the feeling that F dev had given their thumbs up. This is where the hype started. otherwise to a flight plan if they knew they couldn't or wouldn't allow a community of players to visit it there had to be something there after all the speculation started the cone sector had long been affiliated with the thyroid, was his home or his hive the location of a superweapon the ruins of past civilizations that had been conquered by the guardians were they somehow involved the pieces of the thyroid mystery were about to be unearthed the theory has caught the interest of not only the scouting and scientific players but also from the target combat community the hunters and defenders of humanity from the galaxy over armed for a fight and flocked to the gnosis this included some of my wingmates, Apollon and Oz.

I planned mainly for scouting and scientific endeavors, but was sure to bring anti-thyroid weapons and other combat modules. to defend myself and the gnosis continued other speculations whether we would discover rax'la a field of terribly destructive black holes or other strange types of objects in space or phenomena or would it just be more of the same virgin snow from space to tread on would there be multiple systems to explore or just the one we jumped could we leave when we arrived if we wanted to or would we? being stuck in the cone sector until the gnosis jumps again all these theories were acceptable most of us accept the risks for my part i love the idea of being stranded there or stranded somewhere else there was no guarantee we would end up where i wanted going as an elite dangerous scout commander sounded exciting to me, I would accept any outcome, well almost any outcome, the community and I waited weeks in anticipation for the expedition, we didn't stop raving and debating the topic. everyone wanted to talk about us going online and going mining while joining some discord or party and chatting and speculating for hours that we planned for every contingency this was becoming the game we had always dreamed of this was the kind of content that brought the community together and we pray that it becomes the new standard for content in the future, after all it shouldn't be too hard for F Dev to give us something right, just a few common systems or just one system, such Once a strange looking gas giant with an abnormally large amount of thyroid activity around it, we would have been more than pleased to say the least, even unlocking part of the sector would have been awesome F dev has countless sectors of space locked presumably so that They can open it later for new content or events, but the years go by and none of these sectors is ever used, finally. te is not the day they will open one up and actually use the space for something as promised of course they will it would be so easy to do great for the game why wouldn't they?

What could hold them? My friends and I rushed to get ready and I made sure to leave early to dock my ship in my landing bay on the sister gno, I remember having to travel a long way to get to it, about 1500 light years, but I made it and parked my ship ahead of schedule, like many of us, we did not want to be left behind on such a monumental journey that will surely echo throughout elite history i went to bed the next morning went to work expecting to come home right after that we jumped into the cone sector so I could launch into whatever adventure was immediately ahead, but while I was at work I had the misfortune of checking out the ghoul network online this is the item given to the elite dangerous community before the gnosis will even jump gnosis stranded 0-7 September 30 304 a scientific research ship has been stranded after a thyroid attack the gnosis flagship of Canon's interstellar research group recently made a hyperspace jump to the fnj b9 0 cone sector system a short time later the following message was received from captain mathias leander of the gnosis commando crew we were a short distance from our voyage when the gnosis was predicted by a group of ships thyroid to return to realspace, it caused severe internal damage to multiple systems including the frameshift motor, there's no doubt we would have been destroyed if it weren't for some of the commanders traveling with us pulling in the thyroid while ejecting metaalloys from their holds the aliens were more interested in picking up the meta-alloys than attacking us the commanders later reported that the thyroid vessels were recently identified as hydra interceptors the gnosis is currently adrift near the eighth outer planet hots system sti d9 six we have started essential repairs but there is a risk of have the thyroids come back before we can escape the system now i'm going to repeat this because it's critical that the gnosis shouldn't have even kicked in yet but this article acted like it had or tried and explained everything that happened before for it to happen essentially it was a huge spoiler a and a disappointing one to say the least it felt like a slap in the face cold low effort slap almost felt like f dev was making a statement stay in line It felt like punishment, but whatever it was, I kept my emotions in check.
I told myself that events were still unfolding and could change and I resolved to do what I could to fend off the Thyroid Threat that this post-dated article mentions after all, by the time I was scheduled to get off work, the gnosis should have tried to make his jump and the thyroid should have started attacking i would be among the first responders the first crew the commander rushing to his ship to launch an emergency isn't such a bad concept right? I loaded up my antithyroid weapons and launched myself from the gnosis. Chaos greeted me. Apollyon had also launched moments before me and I saw him go after Medusa or something.
I put my weapons into gear as massive thyroid interceptors surrounded me with hyper-aggression. they riddled me riddled my shields with esoteric attacks that I barely understood at that moment I turned to the big meaty eyeball center of one of the bastards and fired I landed one direct hit after another feeling good about the contact I was making but that's when it all went wrong i noticed a fine for a small amount of credits showing up on my screen the gnosis in the middle of an emergency thyroid attack i was fined for defending her i had violated the no fire zone very confused and frustrated i turned and walked away from the gnosis as hard and fast as I could but the damage kept coming as I tried to exceed whatever no fire zone they had imagined how far was far enough I couldn't be sure and it seemed excessive and unavoidable in an instant. it was destroyed i couldn't be sure in all the madness but it didn't seem like the thyroid had killed me it seemed like the gnosis itself had brought me down one way or another it certainly has been the cause of my destruction because of me ager well i didn't answer in the gnosis i responded in a correctional facility 1700 light years away this concluded my gnosis expedition and my affiliation with canon apollyon and oz got lucky and stayed to fight thyroid further and destroyed a couple before returning to the bubble while So much so, all those days preparing for this event felt wasted and I went online to share my experience and anger with the community.
I expected, as I always do, to receive backlash for my opinions and experiences. after all you post a comment about the weather and a horde of mentally deficient clowns going on a rampage of hate rampage and replying back for no apparent reason and I'm sorry to say the elite dangerous community is no different sometimes if you post a funny video about a docker mishap you will get a thousand comments insulting your mom because you even said the words docker the world is full of insecure spiteful people but to my surprise the vast majority of responses to my rant were supportive.
It seemed that many commanders felt as deceived as I did, and many were horrified to hear what specifically happened to me. I was pretty mad at F dev a dev team I normally hold in high regard which is actually not that common an opinion for them to begin with I didn't get vulgar or stop at it but I did say some bad things specifically I said that they didn't take the time to think and well, even though I felt guilty for insulting them looking back, I don't think I was wrong. I hold FDF in high regard, but they handled this event or incident poorly on all fronts.
I and many other commanders consider this the

darkest

day in elite and hordes of ex-players will comment that it was the last straw for them and they haven't played elite dangerous sense F dev lost a lot of credibility and I will never let it build up hype about something in elite never again if we get something great thats great eat but never expect it never count on it never trust it be happy with what you have and play dumb with whatever else is supposed to come down the pipeline eg , when the carriers were announced I gave them little thought when they were scheduled, gave them little thought when they were postponed It didn't surprise me and it didn't hurt me in the slightest I knew they would be and it's fine I'm happy with what I have and if one day I I connect and all of a sudden we have operators so I'll be excited then and I'll think it's great while still having the reservation that there will probably be horrible bugs and glitches to work out, r Remember that elite dangerous is an ambitious game, a developer F is comparatively small and independent, you have to be mature with your expectations, but regardless of their staff and ability I find the way they handled the situation professionally unacceptable if you are going to make a controversial decision not do it at the last minute don't publish an articleambiguous Gao network hours before the event even happens don't let players get their hopes up to begin with don't sit in permission blocking zones for ages without any explanation without using any of them don't fine or punish commanders for fight back or the seasons don't send players 1700 light years away over fifty credit fines the list of mistakes goes on and on and on but by far their biggest mistake is the missed opportunity they could have easily created a unique little star system with a few rocks and thyroid leave us stranded for a week and we would have been happy why would you deliver such fantastic fruit? it's sad and that's what hurt the most in those weeks leading up to that event what was that team doing where were they what did they do when they got to work in the morning?
Where did those hours go? If they can't even copy/paste the simplest star system. Why the hell were they going to work? don't even think they know where they were and that's why it's unacceptable professionally, but that was then, that was an event. I have since moved away from the incident and am not going to exert this anger towards F dev. I get along with them now and I. I do support them and recommend their game but I don't know if they ever formally apologized for the incident in any way and honestly I don't care the way to do this right is to do it right, give the players and the community the expedition that is deserve. you can take pride in your work you can take pride in your game you can show some effort some give one it shouldn't be just us but i'm not saying this to delay i'm saying this so we can keep going i don't want there to be any slurs or hate mail to f dev they've listened to us strong enough the first time we all make mistakes and we all deserve second chances we are human beings we weren't thyroid or whatever and all the hype about F dev let's explore what we gamers have learned from this part of history number one don't get your hopes up, especially if its content is unofficial and clearly confirmed number two don't defend yourself or a station near your zone of fire no matter how common sense seems unless you're prepared for the counter sequences number three, always be prepared to be sent to another system when you pay a fine, no matter how small or how innocent you feel. and number four is a point i always make when talking about dangerous elite trust only yourself for your adventures don't trust or rely on F dev Canon or even your closest wingmen to provide exciting science expeditions for yourself or anyone else kind of adventure you have to be able to come up with some of these things yourself and you have to be prepared to embrace and revel and fail make it memorable make it fun make it a video make it your own the lessons F dev and all game developers in general can take from this are much deeper and already discussed, I can only continue to enjoy their game as it is and pray that one day they redeem themselves from an amazing adventure that the ghoul network will no doubt leak a few hours too early
