Easy Jelly Roll Quilt As You Go Tablerunner | Fat Quarter Shop

May 31, 2021
Hi, I'm Kimberly from the Fat Quarter store and today I'm going to show you how to make a

quilt

as you go along the table runner. It's super

easy

and great for beginners. You will use one moto

jelly

roll

which will be for the front and one

jelly

roll

will make two table runners for the back, you need one of every five eights and for the five one yard eights we will also use some batting and I will use two weights different threads for joining I am going to use 50 weight thread and for

quilt

ing I am going to use 28 weight thread super

easy

let's get started I have selected the Harvest Road collection from Mota to make my table runners and the reason why I selected it is because it has two really different color combinations, which makes it easy to divide, so what you're going to do is take 14 strips for one table runner, 14 strips for a second table runner, and then you'll have some leftover strips that you can use for another runner of table. project or you could put them together to make your binding, so we're going to go ahead and decide to do the blue table runner today, so we have 14 strips and we'll start with those so you have your jelly.

Roll up the strips and you'll have a center for that strip, so what I did was I took 14 strips of blue gelatin and I have the fold right in the center and we'll cut them in half so I have to cut a little sliver, a tiny little piece, like an eighth of an inch, a

quarter

of an inch, just a little bit and then we're going to throw them in the trash and now we have 28 strips, so I'm going to set my strips aside for now and then we're going to take out our batting, so today we're going to use the Happy Cloud 80/20 table runner batting and the nice thing about that is that it's already cut so you just unroll the bundle and what I'm going to do is fold it in half lengthwise so I can find the center and I'm going to go ahead and put a little pin there where I know exactly where the center is and that's where we're going to start, so I'm going to put pins there and then I know where it is and then this is just a worn table runner, so I'm going to gather some fabrics, so I think I'll start with the cream, right? in the center and you can see that these strips are longer than the table runner and that's okay because we're going to trim that at the end, so on the left side of the pin I'm going to put one of my strips maybe a little bit. a little bit more, so it's partly the same, so right there, like in the center, and then we'll get another color, maybe a light blue, and we'll put that on top so we have two strips with right sides together and what What I'm going to do is pin just a couple of times, this doesn't have to be perfect and the

quarter

inch seam doesn't even have to be perfect, so now we have these right sides together and we have this. set and what I'm going to do to make this easier for me is to roll up my batting so it's not in the way when I'm sewing and I'm going to put wonderful clips at the end and as I add to my table runner I can unroll it so it's a lot easier to work with, so we're going to do that and then we're going to go to the sewing machine and we're going to whip up this little table runner real quick, so I put a walking foot on my machine and a walking foot will actually hold all the layers. together and it will be smoother.

You don't need to use one. I prefer mine and mine actually has almost a quarter inch foot, so I'm going to put the edge on my walk and I'm going to start sewing out of the batting, it doesn't have to be exactly a quarter inch, just keep it consistent as you come down and I'm going to show the batting, so I added my ironing board to my sewing area that way. We can actually pull this table runner up so we can go back and forth to the sewing machine, so I'm going to flatten my stitches and set the seam and you can see that your seam is going to go in the direction that you're going to press that direction nice and flat and The reason we are sewing the end of our batting is so that when we trim again at the end, we will trim right at the edge of the batting and we can get the most out of our body and make our table runner as big as possible. , so it's very important to move it away about half an inch, so now we have our first two strips down and we're going to keep adding, so we're going to choose two more. strips I'll put this one here and see how it looks and then maybe another Navy, so I think I like how it looks and what I'm going to do is join those right sides into the batting and I'll just follow the little zigzags on the edge just lined up together and I'm just going to pin it in a little bit, just a couple of pins, since this doesn't have to be exact, it's just going to hold it in place, so I'm going to do that. side, I'm going to turn it over and use those wonderful clips that really hold everything in place, put these sides together right and as we build our table runner, you can do two at a time and that will really bring the 28 strips down really .

Quick, now we're going to go back to our sewing machine and we're going to sew exactly the same way starting with the batting and we're just going to turn it over and do the other side. Return to our earnings table. Flatten your scenes a little and I didn't pre-wash any of my fabrics or pre-starch. I just took straight out of the jelly roll package in this project, just lay it down real good and iron the other side and you can see if you have place your sewing machine on your ironing table, side by side, you can do this in one time, it's really easy so I like it to be nice and flat and then we'll keep adding to it so now I've already used it so if that's probably not the best option let's maybe do a checkered box we haven't used a plaid, so maybe a plaid there, maybe another blue white, which looks pretty good, so now I'm just going to pin this and you don't really need that many pins around it. and this and now we're going to go right to our sewing machine and sew these two stitches, these two things and I can't start on the batting so we're just going to slide over to our ironing board and prepare the seams for this is coming together very quick so with one jelly roll you can make two table runners they make great housewarming gifts super easy if you need to put together a project real quick so at this point I'm running out of space so I'm going to open up my batting a little bit more, move my wonder clips back a little bit so I have more room to add, do the same thing on the other side, just unroll it as you go, so I need to add to each side and so on.

I'm going to add these and we'll keep doing this until the entire table runner is done, so keep building until you have all the strips all the way to the edge, so now you'll have all the shrimp there. and then you have the back and on the back you can see that our strip came out of our batting, so what we're going to do is trim first. I'm going to crop this side and I'm just going to crop exactly on the batting. I'm just going to trim in a straight line, so I'm just trimming right at the edge of the batting all the way down, keeping it nice and straight.
I'm going to turn it around. You just can't go straight. on your ruler and you can see that the edge is coming out a little bit and that's okay, you're just going to cut it straight with your previous cut, so now everything is straight on the edges, we're going to turn it over and We have a little bit of batting here that we're going to cut now. If the fabric goes this far, you're going to cut from the back, so whichever direction you have the batting, we're going to cut it on the edge and you. you're going to trim you're going to straighten this out come down and just make sure it's straight so you have a good corner so when you put the ruler down you can put it right on the edge and it should be at a 90 degree angle so do the same thing here, line up the ruler here and down here and look at that, so let's cut it out, so now this is our top, basically all of the fabric is one hundred percent even with the edge of the quilt. up and now we're going to add our backing so we have our backing fabric, it's a yard and five-eighths, now we have a newly lined edge border and I'm going to cut it in half and what is that.
It's going to work well in this fold which will give you two backings, one for the green and one for the blue, and I chose a color that would work with both color combinations of my table runner. I'm going to go ahead and iron one of these backs. and it comes back so if I iron my backing and I'm going to put it wrong side up and I'm just going to put my table runner on top, I'm just going to leave a little bit on each side, the trick is to leave it nice and flat and not puffy on the back, like this Now I'm going to leave it nice and flat.
If you wanted to spray the base of your batting, you could use a 505 spray. Personally, I don't like those sprays, so I prefer to just quilt it as I go. So I've got it and now I'm going to pin it all over the outside. I'm just going to pin it slightly because I'll probably reposition it and repin it later as we go so I can flatten it out as I go, but I want to have it pinned a little bit, so this is our center here, so I'm probably going to pin it. I'll have it nice and flat and you could just use safety pins if you wanted to, this will prick these little pins.
I'm just me. I just don't want to buy safety pins. Safety pins would be much easier and you wouldn't cut yourself, but I like to use my pen since I don't have a safe. You are him, so on the outside. I'm not pinning as much because what I'm going to do is roll this up like we did before and pin this and pin here to take care of the rest and like I said, I really need it in the middle to pin it really well. on the outside you can reposition it as you go so I'm going to roll this side up now we're going to start quilting in the center so I'm going to quote from the center to the end.
I'm going to stitch a quarter inch away from each scene because I like the way it looks, you could just do one stitch if you wanted to, but I really like the way it looks and I'm going to put a 28 weight on the top of my machine so that You can see my quilting and on the bobbin I'm going to leave a weight of 50 and in this I'm just using full color mm so let's grab our sewing machine and let's start sewing so now we're going to go to our sewing machine. and I'm going to put the edge of my foot in the seam and we're going to sew.
I'm going to start with batting so that all my starts and stops are covered once I get the binding on. I got my stitch length as 3.5. I tested it before I started, so you can do a couple of tests with the batting to see how it looks. I'm going to remove the pins as I go, so I really like how the twenty-eighth turns out. Wait, it gave me a big, thick stitch, it really shows. I'm going to flip it over and do the exact same thing on the other side again, starting with the actual table runner and having a table that's nice and flat, that's going to make this work. much smoother so if you like the way it looks you'll just keep going and the easiest thing is to go from the center to a side stop and then go to the other side and start in the center. just make your table runner pretty and even you could also sew in the ditch right in the center so it's up to you so I'm going to do that and as I unroll it I'm going to make sure it's nice and flat and you You'll just keep it.
So I'm going to turn it over and then go ahead just go to your table make sure it's nice and flat and continue so we go ahead and finish our stitches and you can see we used 28 weights on the at the top and 50 weight on the back, you can do whatever yarn you want, you can even do less stitches, you can just do one stitch per row, you can do it however you want, we just wanted to do it as it was a simple pattern. it's a little bit fancy, so now what we're going to do is trim this and what I'm going to do we've already trimmed it down to the batting, but I want to do it now since we have the backing. makes it really square, so I'm going to put a line on one of my seams and make sure it looks straight and then I'm going to cut all the way around, that's how I would square it.
I'm going to show all the sides and that's why we stitched the edge because you'll never see the start and the end of your stitches now to keep it straight. I'm going to keep my ruler up here so I can see that it's still straight and then I'm just going to move my table runner to straighten it out, but I want it to be straight and not diagonal, so I'm going to go ahead and again straighten it here first and then while I'm holding it straight, just pull the table runner now to make the corner and I'll show you a little trick.
I'll pull him closer to me to make that corner. I really wanted to have a 90 degree angle, so what I'm going to do is have it lined up. and you can just fill your ruler right here and then here and I'm just going to trim this edge and that way when you put the binding in, you'll have that really nice corner and it won't be funny for someone to look like that. Same thing here, line up the top of the edge and just cut around the ruler, the corner of your ruler will actually give you that square so you don't have to really think and then of course I'll continue putting my creative grain ruler on the upper part.
I'm just cutting it out and this is one of the easiest quilts you can make as a beginner. I could even see a kid making this one so easy and I love that you can get it from a jelly. roll so I keep going like thisnewI'm going to get to this corner. I'm going to go ahead and turn my ruler here, I'm going to use my fingers to make sure it's straight, come on, straighten it, just continue that straight line and then look at your corner and look, it's perfect. so it's got all the right angles and it looks perfect so all you need to do now this is your front and your back all you need to do now is bind so we're going to link several super easy binding videos to our channel. subscribe to our channel and we also have other quilt tutorials as you go along our channel and if you want to see more comment below and tell us what you are looking for and we will see you next time.
