EASY Air Dry Clay Ideas - IMAGE TRANSFER AT HOME

Jun 06, 2021
Hello and welcome Sarah. I'm so excited to show you this project today and can't wait to show you the results at the end. This air dry

clay

project came about as a happy accident when I made some of my others. air dry

clay

projects and I've developed a nice little technique that allows you to print directly onto air dry clay anyway and I'll show you how it's so

easy

air dry clay is such a forgiving and versatile medium to use and I really hope you like it as much as I do and that you join all the different projects I have here too.

For this air dry clay project, the first thing I did was create the

image

I want to

transfer

to the clay and so on. For this I'm going to use theme b and I'm just sketching out a nice little detailed b and I'm going to scan it into the computer. I'll put the link in the description below so you can print it too. If you want or can make absolutely any design of your choice or choose an

image

from the internet, I scanned my b and added some text, it is very important that you flip any text like this and print upside down and then We have made a few different designs here that you can use and we want to print them in the best quality possible so you can get the most ink on the paper as possible.

More Interesting Facts About,

My first copy, as you can see, is a little gray and the next one is very black, so I personally wanted to use black so I could

transfer

as much of that ink to the clay as possible. However, you can go for something lighter if you want or you can pick a color and just experiment and have fun, just enjoy it, so here we have our clay again. We need to give it a good need like I did before and then we'll roll it out into a nice pretty thick disk shape about a quarter of an inch thick.

I work on a tile so that it is a nice smooth surface. This method of pattern transfer for clay is absolutely brilliant if you want to duplicate the image many times and let's get a cookie cutter of any size or something that you can cut out and secure. Make sure your design fits within that space cut out the design and simply check to see if it fits. I'm going to use it this size. I wish it was maybe a little bit bigger, but that's the biggest cookie cutout I have, so I could use a shape and I cut around that shape and now, very important, I have a little bit of water here, just a very small water spot, so I just put my finger in the water and now I'm smoothing this all over the surface and I'll do it again.

I just want to get a really even amount of water, it's not really water, it's water, we're not wetting the surface, it's just very wet, so for this size of clay I just dipped my finger in the water three times and I'm smoothing it out. so that we have exactly the same amount of water on the entire surface of the clay and now we take our design and we turn it upside down and we are going to lightly press on that paper that we are not pressing on it, we gently make sure that the entire surface is in contact with the clay.
I should have said it before. I have printed here on plain white copy paper, plain paper and on an inkjet printer, I let this sit there for just two minutes now that I left it there for two minutes we can take a quick look at the results, take the edge of the paper and gently see if we have an image and see how the image is transferred. If you see a little patch that maybe hasn't transferred, you can put the paper back on, but only if you haven't removed all the paper and just give it another gentle rub there and if you can see, it's beautiful, absolutely beautiful.
I love this little bee. Hello, honey, it's so sweet, so sweet. I think the results of this are incredible. Just think of all the different things you could transfer to your clay. Now this works for me with my printer and my paper. I'm not. I guarantee it will work for you, but try it and see what happens, so now I'm cutting mine with my cookie cutter very gently here and I'm going to turn it into a little roller coaster and just watch until the end. so we'll see how we finish them at the end and some other little techniques that I'll show you in a few minutes take a little water on your finger or a brush and smooth all the edges well. and clean, just making sure you don't get any of your image wet, you can use a little tool or knife on the bottom and then I let mine dry on that tile and I'll give this one maybe two days or more to set.
I know that. sitting there on the tile as it is quite thick, just make sure you dry it nice and slow so it doesn't warp or crack. I have an air dry clay video on the durability of air dry clay and how to prevent it. crack and you can also take a look at it if you want. We're going to make a second small object here, so again we're going to roll out our clay to about a quarter of an inch thick and a larger size. time and I have a round object that I'm just going to cut to make it nice and smooth.
I should have used my larger rolling pin, but it doesn't matter, so I'm going to cut around this can. I have a very sharp knife. and I'm just using that to cut, as you can see we hardly use air dry clay for these projects so if you buy a one kilogram package it will really last you for quite a few different projects and it's a really economical way to make beautiful crafts , beautiful gifts and I am sure you will also enjoy this article. I just want to make sure that my edges are nice and clean before I start and that I have the biggest one printed, tall honey and the little bees I'm going to do exactly like we did before, just add a very thin film of water that's barely there, just a nice even amount, and I'm going to add these little bees as a little pattern on the bottom half and then add the high honey in there as well and it will be very sweet, I'm sure again we're pressing very gently, very lightly, just to make sure Make sure all the ink is in contact with the clay and then we're gone.
Leave it for two minutes and then we can go back to it like we did now and remove it very carefully and there we have our pattern. Sometimes you might like a nice faded look like this. I used a little less ink on the paper so I just got a really nice soft gray and you get a lovely pattern there and I'm sure you could think of all the different things you'd like to print on your clay and all the different uses for her, so with this one I'm going to turn it into a little air dry clay dish and we'll just place it in a bowl.
I put plastic wrap on the bowl to make sure it doesn't stick. Place it there very nice and neat. Yours has the shape you want, you can make a square, a rectangle and you can leave it flat and it already looks very nice, so I'm going to let them dry. This one might take a few days to dry because it's quite thick and has that cling film underneath, I recommend that you take a leftover piece of clay, spread it out and place a little bit of the printed image on that as well and we'll use this little piece as a test for the glaze at the end and I just wanted to show you this little bit here because of the importance of letting them dry very slowly because on this one I sped up the drying time and look how it's curved and warped because the air dried clay shrank too quickly and warped and that not good.
As a coaster we can't use it as a coaster so this one is thinner and that also makes it warp easier so with the one we just made we made it quite thick and I have another one here that I made for just the outline so you could use this technique to outline some of your pieces and then you could go in and paint them. I've made a little one with text here so you can also do that with some words that you can see. In this case the paper actually stuck to the clay, that's where if you have too much water on the surface the paper will start to stick to the clay and that happened there, but if you want a rustic look then that's enough, as I say.
If you want to use it as an outline, I have a beautiful silver pen here and I'm just going to outline and use my printed section as an outline and guide, and how beautiful it is, it's absolutely beautiful. I'd love to. I can't draw that freehand with confidence and ease there, so with the guide you can do it and it's amazing the results. These have been drying for a few days and I think you will agree with me, they are absolutely beautiful and make beautiful gifts and look beautiful in your

home

, so take some light sandpaper and sand away any imperfections.
You can always leave a rough surface like this to get a nice stone effect. Take a soft cloth and make sure to remove all dust before adding. any paint or varnish, now you can add a little bit of color at this stage if you want, but I'm just going to take some black acrylic paint and I'm going to darken my letters, so I'm going to take a nice thin brush and paint over those letters , they didn't come out as dark as I expected and this is a really good demonstration of how you can use your transfer as a guide for your entire painting.
I love how it looks and now let's move on to the top coat: the first thing you want to do is take the leftover piece that you made and experiment, take the polish or varnish that you want to use, do a test on it and make sure the ink stays on. place, it should be mine. If I'm going to use a spray lacquer on mine, there are different options available and just so you can check them out, when using a spray like this, it's much better to apply two or three light coats rather than one heavy coat like I said before.
I discovered this technique as a nice happy accident when I did one of my other projects, I printed some of the templates on paper that had already been printed on the other side and when I cut them out to put them in the clay, the print on the other side Bottom was the clay, so I thought I could do something with this and here it is and I hope you try it too. It is a very fun clay project and

easy

to air dry. Enjoy it.
