Dissected: Sequel to Zelda: Breath of the Wild E3 2021 Trailer Analysis & Speculation
hello there lovely people italics from nintendo live here and i'm not alone as i so have or so often i'm not these days i'm joined by mr zeon and mr john say hello lovely people today's a good day it's just a good day to be a niche nintendo fan but also a

zelda

fan it is isn't it and um yeah today we're gonna be doing something that we've only done once before it is a live dissection we're going to be going through the

sequel

to the legend of

zelda

breath

of the

wild

's teaser

trailer

from e3

2021

and we're going to be looking for little hidden ghibli bits here and there which could be of minor interest or major interest we don't know so i think we should just start because there's not actually a great deal to look at here um but yeah you guys ready i think so i am i am indeed then let's dive into whoa so it starts off nintendo switch click and then we get some horrible compression like really nasty compression oh there we go that's the first thing you know of i suppose vague note let's just scrub back to that point there we go link has got the malice going over his arm and that's uh i mean that's not a surprise we knew that from the last one pretty much um although actually i don't know whether we knew it was the malice did we not exactly i mean the first

trailer

was very out of sync so it's hard to piece together everything it looks like this is picking up from where that left off in a lot of...

areas yes yeah it seemed almost like it could have been like a magic spell or something right originally yeah something like that but um i don't think that's the case um and you know we get this glimpse there's clearly some sort of evil boogaloo going on uh but let's carry on we get another quick shot in just a second there we go and that is some sort of corpse which i mean come on it's ganondorf isn't it it's got grudo symbols all over him it's ganondorf it's the first proper look at him i think we've had in a while yeah it did go by so fast too that i i questioned if it was him or not at first because it just it just came and went i mean we don't know for a fact that it's ganondorf but come on yeah we pretty much know uh and in the last

trailer

it ended with him facing the camera at you whereas now he is just he's he's alive his arms are in the air he's his body is back to its form so it looks like it's definitely picking up after those events from last time there is one thing here that i um noticed just now actually he's got holes in his hands yeah and in his chest too um and i don't know whether i mean the the the uh holes in the hands look like they could almost be eyes like shaker eyes or something or it could just be rot um because he's got holes like on the lower side of his like just under his palm as well um but it seems a little bit too significant to me i was wondering if it was perhaps...

the sages in prison from twilight princess but i'm pretty sure those were chains rather than impaling his hands yeah i'm curious what that little emblem is too that's kind of holding his it looks a little bit like like a heart like it doesn't yeah it does um i'm not quite sure the amiga symbol in some ways and i suppose if he is the ultimate evil he is the end then an amiga symbol would make sense obviously it's upside down in this context but you know maybe he just got dressed in the dark or something we're not here to judge anyway moving on let's uh crack on we get some more lovely compression and uh just loads of malice and there we go

zelda

falling down here poor old

zelda

she can't catch a break um yeah it's just

zelda

falling into a pit i don't really know what significance there is and she continues to fall down to the pits we can make her come back out of the pit but uh no she falls into the pit like that and it fades to black i don't is there anything significant there at all i mean i guess we can speculate about where she goes but it's hard to say i mean the entire game's about lifting hyrule so if she's going down is she going to be in prison down there or will she maybe even escape from down there maybe maybe she's falling upwards we don't know if the things are flying up there's nothing to say that she's not flying up with everything else oh interesting sure yeah i suppose if she does i...

know we're just speculating right now anyways but if she does happen to fall down that it's kind of a bummer for for me because i've you know with the first uh

trailer

i suppose that we saw it seemed like

zelda

and link were going to be very connected or at least just because we saw them adventuring together they were exploring something and i hope that this doesn't mean that she's going to be you know thrown into a pit and now you have to go save her or she's trapped for the rest of the game you know i just i really hope that this isn't the the only time that we see

zelda

or i just hope she doesn't disappear this doesn't seem like a make or break if it feels like they they've definitely redesigned

zelda

and throughout the

trailer

we see link's hair is a very similar proportion to hers so i wouldn't say that this throws out any possibility of

zelda

being playable or anything like that um it's it's this is the second

trailer

and it barely shows much gameplay so it's a bit too early to really say like definitively that's true that's true moving on we um we get this lovely black screen for a good few seconds then we get a great big burst of light and we see link falling very skyward sword-like it's it's you know it's hard to deny that uh definitely free-falling i don't know of anything that's worth mentioning with this free falling apart from that it looks a bit like skyward sword uh yeah do...
you guys have anything i mean how do you get there if throughout the

trailer

we see link going from the land to the sky like later on we'll touch on what happens later on but he is free falling from where he's in the sky so what did he jump from is there a higher up platform or perhaps if it is like skyward sword maybe he's managed to like dive off his left wing or something maybe i will say that if you look at that the cloth that he's wearing over his shoulder it kind of has like a yellow pattern on it and it almost looks like a design that's similar to what link's blue tunic had on it how it had the uh or the uh the scarf sort of that all the champions wore and it had all of their different divine beasts on it i believe i actually have one that was made by a company um it's like a replica by muster brand i just pulled it off the shelf quick to look and it it looks similar it's not the same but i wonder just what the relevance of that is right it's definitely interesting and this is also the first instance we get of links clearly not looking great arm i mean it's his right arm it's definitely looked better and throughout the

trailer

we see a lot of use of this arm it's most likely the evolution of the sheikah slate may be replacing it maybe being alongside it but it seems it's going to give link a lot of new abilities yeah and to be honest the idea of replacing something as integral to the original game as the sheikah slate...
is kind of a bold move and one that i would genuinely welcome absolutely yeah it does kind of feel like how how would

breath

of the

wild

you know what would a

breath

of

wild

to be without the sheikah slate but this is a potentially uh excellent revision of it and i didn't notice until now either but you can see that the the malice uh or whatever you know whatever you'd like to call it is kind of i don't realize it's like consuming his body as well it's going kind of into his into his torso and you could see that really well just with the the outfit that he's wearing too oh absolutely you're right yeah and as you mentioned in the uh in the discussion video we had um it's very princess mononoke isn't it yeah and you have that movie don't you alex i do yeah i i've watched it for the first time last year i think and i was honestly wowed i i enjoyed it way more than i thought i would i didn't think i dislike it by any stretch but wow yeah no it was way better than i than i expected it to be super super good i'm glad anyway moving on uh we see link falling and then we get him on his uh glider there's not a lot to say with this scene except there's something on the right there which looks like maybe a structure of some sort um oh yeah wow it's hard to it's hard to tell but it could well be some sort of large sort of wooden structure because that looks like it could be a roof of some description like it's too...
smooth in my opinion to be mad to be natural especially when you consider how craggly the other areas are i could be wrong of course but it definitely looks man-made you're touching on something big here i think um the assumption is that

breath

of the

wild

2 is based on the world of the first game but a lot of it's been elevated but this structure doesn't really scream any part of

breath

of the

wild

one to me no like i'm thinking of the coliseum or areas like that but no this this seems like a new building it it does kind of give me uh a not hittano village but uh what's is it it's not kakariko village either but i don't think maybe i'm thinking of one of those but there there is a merlin maybe the uh the ocean town the sort of port town that's not the one that i'm thinking of but i'd be curious to go back now and explore and see if we can find anything resembling this at all yeah a lot of the land in the sky does look unique and if alex can you go back to link and focus on his shield a moment absolutely so the the symbol there looks like a i think most people assume it's a chic shika symbol but the eye is actually very similar to vati now i don't want to speculate about verti being a character in this game but

breath

of the

wild

does uh pale of homage to previous games especially with location names and things like that and this has been spreading around a bit and that that is definitely vati's eye so it seems like they...
are probably just winking at it um maybe there's a deeper connection but i think this is more of a wing to previous games that's really cool i would love to see him come back in some capacity i think it's entirely possible that maybe it's the same race or tribe that varty was part of you know how they've toyed around with things like twilight and things like that it's possible it may well just be enough that's the most likely thing but yeah there's um there's clearly some sort of shenanigans going on here and it's really interesting to see what else there is should we move on yeah sure let's go uh so here we go is another shot we get another decent look at the shield there this intrigued me this shot only because what you said before john about how a lot of the um the floating platforms look unique it's entirely possible that link is currently on one of those floating islands but if not the trees are almost identical to the ones that are actually in the sky so either this is parts of the ground that have been lifted up or this is you know sort of various is almost sort of an archipelago in the sky sure this this area here reminds me a lot it might be something completely different but it reminds me a lot of one area in

breath

of the

wild

where there's a shrine and multiple guardians around it and um if that is the case the shrine is kind of replaced by that arch at the end and it's hard to say cause this is this is a...
very underscored area with some grass and trees but it just gives me those vibes yeah i don't think i really have anything to say about this but i like i like both of your contributions oh and if you if you look in the the back over there too wow look at it when i say i have nothing you can actually see up in the top there uh well kind of in the the middle part of the screen you can see the silhouette of another piece of land that's floating and you can see there's another one of those uh arches up there yeah so i wonder then if if alex is right you know i mean if you guys are just generally right about the fact that these pieces have floated up uh because i mean we see the trees and now there's an arch there too yeah that the arch is pretty significant like what do you think it means how do we get these pieces of land is another question too are we flying are we using the the water thing that we see in just a bit because these are pretty far apart but maybe the archers have some kind of travel technique i was about to say maybe we're traveling through the arches kind of i don't wanna kind of a bit sort of spyro like only in the sense that you go through the arch and just start flying sure that'd make a lot of sense at the highest platform you can just jump off and just glide to wherever you want to go oh that'd be good wouldn't it okay so moving on we have this blooming thing now i don't know it strikes me as vaguely familiar and i...
don't fully know why um more just in the style than anything else also pay close attention to those artichokes uh like sort of formations that it's got on the side of its i want to say head um because they come up uh subsequently uh so keep an eye on that there's two things i want to know um first thing there's another arch on the right right next to him uh second thing he reminds me of the wind gods from wind waker those those um things that would be in the cyclones it i couldn't think what it is but that is absolutely it and i it does look friendly doesn't it it doesn't look like an enemy no yeah there's there's something in his mouth is it just talk yeah i think it's just talking there's no kind of vicious attack um being brewed up no i'm not even sure that's his mouth it's i see what you mean though about yeah at first i thought the the gold piece in the middle was an eye but now i totally see two eyes on the side and a potential mouth and it does look like a little friendly dragon statue thing i don't know it's maybe the maybe the sort of the golden thing in the middle is like the third eye you know sort of the um the philosophy of the the mind's eye sort of personified sure i wonder if it's going to glow because those artichoke style things that you were you were mentioning it it almost feels like they could light up at night or you know just with if you meet a certain requirement or something or if...
it's happy if it is a happy creature a good welder yeah it's um it's a cool design i actually really like it sort of feels like it fits in with

breath

of the

wild

but without being too similar to stuff we've seen before it definitely looks different yeah very mechanical feeling too um for sure um moving on we get a shot of this now this is something that i've noticed all the goblin in this

trailer

have horns yeah i noticed that too there's a blue one later with the horn yeah wow every single one of them i thought oh maybe it's a rank thing but no all the goblins have horns and uh as you'll see in a second these mccoblins are on the back or at least the head of a stone palace yeah it's great it's it's if you go way back to when um link's gliding down to the ground you can even see the rock on the back of the stone talisa's back yeah it looks like you can still crumble this entire structure um yeah it'll be interesting to see if by knocking it over you know as you do when you hit that weak point whether that throws the bokoblins off that sounds like it would be maybe a little bit too easy but who knows maybe they've got another element in an account there yeah if you sneak up on them or something like or sneak up on it or something yeah possibly what's interesting about this scene too is it resembles the first game so closely i can recognize this area like almost perfectly yeah i'm looking in the background to...
see if there's anything of significance and i can't i can't see anything to be honest no there's another camp in the distance just before the scene cuts um it's hard to tell this one's also in a stone tower or not oh yeah yeah there it is um no i'm not sure it is it's hard to tell isn't it um it's just it looks like

breath

of the

wild

one there's gonna be you know the the the land below and then the land in the sky so it's definitely gonna be familiar it's gonna be interesting to see how it sort of plays on that familiarity yeah absolutely and i've just noticed that the um the stone talus look at the sort of the underneath it has spikes to stop you from climbing up the back sure wow yeah and actually i think that that the the um the sort of the all deposit is indeed a weak spot because they put up shields to protect it that's great yeah i'm not sure about you guys but the coupling camps got a bit a little bit simple as the game goes on so this seems like a great way to shake them up by making them literally move around yeah absolutely and imagine if there are even bigger ones unlike because there was like a giant i think it was a magma talus was it a magmatalis or a lava or something like that a great big one it was part of the dlc um so there could be even bigger camps as well which is a fun thought yeah but um moving on we get this shot here so this is this is you know sort of link's arm as you can probably...
tell it's all glowing and i suspect maybe this is some sort of device to try and keep the malice at bay maybe sure do you think we're in the shrine of resurrection right now maybe but i don't recognize the symbols around on the sort of on the stone and especially the the glowing light it's not it's not anything like we've seen in the previous game we saw it in the original teaser but this is definitely it's definitely something a bit funky you're right yeah the the events of the first

trailer

in this

trailer

definitely work together and we've seen the glowing light in the previous

trailer

even if this has just shown malice so it probably is the same location do you think that sort of device that he has on his arm is to help him control the power i suppose that he has or to restrain it yeah i mean maybe allow him to harness it and prevent it from taking over his body or something sure but i mean that's that's mad

speculation

right now so i can't remember now too but when we originally see that hand in the first

trailer

wasn't there something like it's been so long i should have watched it before we did this or even i should have watched it yesterday but doesn't he have long fingernails in that

trailer

too or was it was there a different hand yeah i think he does that seems off okay yeah it looks a bit odd doesn't it as if it's almost something is trying to possess him as you've said previously moving on we...
get this shot here so we see link using his right arm the quote-unquote infected one using a very you know sort of this looks very much like stasis it's not exactly the same though as we'll see here because it gets thrown back up and it's almost as though rather than freezing and throwing it back it's almost as if time is being reversed on it oh you're right i think that's definitely what's going on and what's interesting as well as the music reverses at this point too and when you play it back is the theme from the

breath

of the

wild

trailer

yeah and it feels like time is kind of a focus of some of these mechanics and we'll see that again in just a moment i think but yeah i i totally agree this this definitely looks like times reversing rather than it being propelled forward and you can also see horn on the goblin again and um yeah the moblins have some sort of stony cap it could be part of their anatomy it could be a could be a hat it's hard to tell but um yeah and it shows that you know this is clearly a weapon they've constructed it's crude metals scratches all over it so they've clearly upped their game as well is that due to ganon's influence or are they now feral from ganon who knows yeah it's hard to say at this point moving on so there we go there's smash that this is another interesting thing now john you talked about how in this scene the this was a sort of link channeling his arm into a flamethrower...
it's not yeah i think if you look at it that's his left arm it's it's his shield if you see his arms crossed so this is i think a weapon which we've not yet seen before but this looks very much like the zonai which um with all the like the ruins that they have with the statues with like the sort of dragon heads in fahren that's that's if that's right that's really cool because that could they could be alluding to this since the first game yeah i a lot of people have been suspecting that they have a role to play in this and this is kind of this is kind of suggesting that as well and this big horrible tendril thing is clearly susceptible to fire which is good to know at the very least but yeah there's definitely some um that's definitely different and it looks like that maybe just by holding up the shield it causes link to spew fire which is damned cool an offensive shield is a really interesting idea and i suppose another question where are we because ahead of this is an altar and it looks like there's a dead end after that so is is this a shrine or is this would there be a chest at the end for defeating this thing or something like that it's entirely possible um that area does look absolutely prime for a chest to suddenly appear and go either that or it'll just hit the ground with a couple thuds that works as well i like that from

breath

of the

wild

yeah good times right moving on we have this doesn't seem...
significant this moment but we've got this pool of water and it's going backwards yeah it's another instance of time reversing yep and that's about all we can say about it really unless i can't it's so close up there's nothing else to see really i don't know how all that water gets held in a single drop but i'm not here to judge like it's hard to see what's going on i do wonder if it relates to the next scene at all where link is sort of propelled upwards and maybe he is going with the flow of the water it's possible yeah uh this is an area where yeah we this is definitely something very new you can see the arm is activated um there's a load of glowing light around link dives through the bottom of something gets kind of stuck um but then squishes through and makes it out to the top as though he were in a liquid and once again we see that artichoke type thing if you see on that little petal pedestal and also right ahead of us is another arch yep it's uh there's there's all sorts i think i think maybe those arches are a form of transportation and there's some sort of ruin to the right as well um with quite an unusual design doesn't seem particularly structurally sound to me but you know yeah when it pans out all the way you can kind of see all the environment that link's standing on and it doesn't seem to be anything anything significant for him to interact with so is this just a vantage point to...
get to other places or is there maybe something just off camera that's more significant it's possible um i think ah we can tell exactly where this is though look down at the ground that's the mushroom fields the thunder thunder planes absolutely is out in the distance too that there's tons of arches scattered all across those those different floating platforms as well yeah i think the arches yeah it's definitely some form of maybe it gives you some sort of temporary flight ability um to allow you to get to higher places but it doesn't obviously doesn't last forever because then you could just easily abuse it it's going to be really interesting to see maybe it just uses stamina or something we will have to wait and see this puts scale into perspective though because those mushroom fields are pretty high up like climbing one of those you can take up your whole stamina meter sometimes you have to sort of go into another one and just look how far down they are right now i'm not in i'm not even entirely sure they're exactly the same mushrooms it's possible it's a new area or it's been lightly redesigned or something but it seems uh without actually looking at the geography of the of the original game it's hard to say with any certainty but the more i look at these floating islands the more i think that they aren't parts of the original hyrule like ripped up it may well be that them ascending causes damage but they all...
have these golden trees and there were no golden trees in the rest of the game yeah that's a good point they could perhaps even come well in i guess this is kind of a spoiler i won't say it exactly but skyward sword of course takes place in the sky and the rest of the series does nots so make that what you will maybe something of the sky is returned and nintendo has put a huge huge emphasis on skyward sword lately and it's i i guess it seems strange that they you know when metroid prime 4 eventually comes out right they're going to probably want to release metroid prime trilogy beforehand and so maybe that's why they've put such a focus on skyward sword maybe it has more to do with

breath

of the

wild

than we would have thought it does seem that way doesn't it like the falling animation alone was just so reminiscent of skyward sword yeah it looks like they're definitely trying to make some sort of connection however minor um i mean originally

breath

of the

wild

had the sail cloth and i think it was only a placeholder before they put in the paraglider which i far prefer i never liked the sail cloth it's like really that's going to hold you up but you know magic doesn't have much use does it no i much prefer the deku leaf but apart from that uh this is the last scene where we see hyrule castle bits falling off as it flies up and a lot of a lot of malice desperately trying to get out and succeeding fades to black and we get to see...
hyrule castle floating much like the rest of uh everything else yeah and if you look at the ground it doesn't look like hyrule town has had much of a facelift i was gonna say if you go back to the first hyrule castle scene you can still see everything's in ruin it looks exactly like it does in

breath

of the

wild

one there's still moss growing on the sort of loftwing statues on the far left uh and it it we assumed time has passed because

zelda

's got a different hairstyle but maybe not much time has really passed at all since the first game maybe not maybe it is taking place you know sort of they you know they they have a bit of a relax after the events the first game and then they decide you know hey there well let's go and investigate this and maybe it is literally just a few weeks or maybe even just like a month or even days after the events of the first game which if anything is kind of scary because ganon was defeated and you know calamity ganon was defeated and the idea that he could come back in human form that quickly is a bit worrying a little bit it usually takes hundreds of years for gallons to return he was just wearing a special defense shield when when we beat him he was wearing frodo's mithril vest exactly and finally the lord of the rings comes full circle well we got the happy mask salesman as tom bombadil which um some people confirmed for me in the comments which i was very pleased about but um yeah apart from that that that that is...
the end of the

trailer

it just continues on for a little bit floating around and uh it continues to float around and it continues actually around i think if we if we look close enough in the smoke here that's kind of billowing uh underneath hyrule castle i'm pretty sure we can make out the the title of press of the

wild

sequel

yes it says the legend of

zelda

smooth yeah um but yeah that is the whole

trailer

uh we actually got more out of that than i thought we would like i genuinely thought this is going to be sort of 10 minutes wham bam thank you ma'am um but no i'm i'm surprised i've learned a few things today and uh i hope you did you two did as well yeah i'm excited when i first heard that they were using the world of the first game i thought maybe that was a mistranslation because we spent so much time in that world already how can they possibly make it exciting and it seems the answer is the sky yes who'da thunk it i'm still excited to see what this means for the lower levels as well you know because i think i'm one of those people that really wants i want dungeons i want something monumental to go explore but i think if the sky is the place that we get to explore now instead that's that's almost a different world in itself so uh yeah i i think i i'm pretty excited now as well especially dissecting this too this was a lot of fun yeah and this isn't a simple like asset reuse i mean this game's been in...
development for four years now yikes yeah but goblins have horns now come on yeah there's a lot of effort there okay well uh if you've noticed something we haven't then please let us know what it is in the comments down below but all that's left for me to say is thank you so much for watching if you liked this video then why don't you raise that subscribe button up with a whole lot of malice underneath just begging to come out and be sure to check out nintendolife.com for all sorts of lovely nintendo related content thank you again for watching bye-bye i'm jon but in the sky i'm zeon and i would love to be underground you
