appleton 42 from pontefract england nicknamed dynamite and he turned to uh american pool around 2006 and he broke through into the sport like no one has seen in such a short time and there you see that fact right there that just came off the screen, he was recently inducted into the bca hall of fame and that just after playing the sport of pool for 11 years he is amazing yes he has accomplished a lot in a sh For a long time and having known Darren since he was 15 , I have never met another player who is obsessed with poole more than him.
darren appleton vs earl strickland 2018 world pool masters round one
He loves billiards even when he's not playing. He's at home watching YouTube and talking about it and everything. He just loves pool and we got to see Earl's break there and the single ball as we said in a previous match right before the middle pocket goes right into this top pocket and he takes a long skinny hard shot here he'll take it in though and he's overplayed it but if the cue ball was on they'll be happy to see he's playing it safe Darren he's a really good game thinker he's the kind of player you always feel like playing the shot correct and he's just playing a little double in this area trying to use the eight or seven as a blocker a very good shot very good shot you will often hear players say they don't play against their opponent they just play on the table they play whatever that the table gives them but darren has a different approach ch to pool he likes to study his opponent he likes to know what his opponent's weaknesses are so he can exploit them at the table i mean it's scary oh he dropped that ball i thought i would he'd give a good shot though that was a good shot there you got it wrong he just goes down and takes the shots like he's over the pocket and he's created a good chance for himself now he's let the cue ball go a bit there though he delights the crowd cue ball a little closer to where you phil you won't need the shot clock here i don't think with earl on the table i mean he's right on it well that's creepy because that's exactly what i was going to I mean, it's not a hindrance to him in the slightest.

More Interesting Facts About,

darren appleton vs earl strickland 2018 world pool masters round one...

I think over the years I will have a tendency to play a little too fast and make the occasional silly mistake where you think the shelf is over. He absolutely despises slow play, I mean I said I went about 90 minutes. with him yesterday at lunch and you know he did. He talked for 89 of the minutes and he was going on and on about how they should reduce the shot clock to 20 seconds and how he hates slow play. run those last couple of racks very very impressive in fact we are looking at vintage earl strickland so far and right now he leads darren appleton by two racks to one welcome everyone to the mansion bed swirl

masters

of 2018. this was the featured contest of the first round when we saw the draw and so far it has lived up to the hype strickland will be very pleased with the way things are going so far wow what a brake shot is this look this, how many balls did he make, oh, and he's going to have a chance. on the next two balls wow just don't bother with the shot clock here three balls I think that's the most we've seen on the break so far and these are that pretty I think I could run these balls and less of the shot clock shot and then a shotgun yeah look about a minute here just the easy use of the checkside there second nature just crouched down and played the shot like it was the easiest thing imaginable yeah there you see it the old nine baller leaves that great angle, so he's going to screw this in two. cushions there they go wow now quick i think the rack took about a minute and five seconds he is up three to one now the winner breaks here its just a race to eight so the great earl strickland increases the pressure for darren appleton darren will have that stepping up the look on darren appleton's face talking a lot right now and he realizes if strickland worked out the break he's in trouble oh yeah that's a good solid shot but the main thing is he stuck with such a great layout when you sat your chair like darren now you're just praying that when he breaks the balls get a little rudimentary or you have a tricky first shot and open shot on the ball for darren now the key shot here is to make sure that try and go down for the two with a good angle so you can come back up for the three oh that's a bit surprising he's gotten too into it and left the cue ball too close to the rail so now i think he might have to he might have to put this ball down and really try to shoot it in wow what is the value of separating these two? no i guess i don't think it will have much of an angle i think i might have to beat this ball on come remove two cushions and just back off the extension code to the middle hotshot here yeah he's just going to pop this ball come back to the center of the table, you always miss that by a lot, this is the problem when you are not sure of yourself.
darren appleton vs earl strickland 2018 world pool masters round one
I haven't been messing with you, you just don't like that type of shot, it's such a brutal type of shot you have to aim that ball so well and as you can see it's like you know it's nowhere near his job so let's see if Earl can trade this hard slice shot on the two blues and if he does he might be looking at an open table oh wow what a shot he's just a brilliant bagger of the ball ie he's 56 he's just he crouched down and didn't leave it like a and also the fact that he put it straight in and didn't take out the three from the pocket made a big difference too yeah it looks great when it's on it's electrifying we've talked a lot about his speed, it was interesting that when he won the 1997 world masters championship and that's why he's here as a former winner on his way to capturing that title. he beat the likes of steve davis he beat tommy donald in the final but he also beat ronnie o'sullivan rocket wow he played a bad shot there in zone six that's the problem when you play super fast you tend to play a shot and land on the side wrong and he's on the cushion, you're going to see him, um, yeah, he doesn't have to get up, he's got a good angle there.
darren appleton vs earl strickland 2018 world pool masters round one
I thought he had to point down a bit to create the angle. I mean when you play a little too fast and don't take a good look at it. What you want to be, you always allow yourself a bit of opportunity to get out and this isn't a gimmick, it's for real Strickland, though hey, so far he's lived up to his moniker, a performance pearl. Earl Strickland 4-1 ahead. playing some wonderful stuff and now he's halfway to the winning line and it was this mess right here well when Darren Appleton is in top form you'd expect him to get it but of course he had to come back for that red three many calculations. on that and then this was a great cut shot here look at this it feathers him into the red three and from there he went to the races with a 4-1 lead I often wonder you know? over those 56 years of his how many racks of pool has he played it's millions yeah i mean i don't even like to risk a guest and he's made another ball and it looks like the ball is going to come and sit ok yeah I think you can steal this ball? in maybe maybe not oh its a dry break i thought the ball went in i must be i heard things i was convinced i heard the ball drop so well darren appleton needs to make something happen here yes he will .
He hasn't been fully in this match so far. up but this is a good shot really this is the shot now oh was the cue ball going oh no that's a bad shot he didn't really go into it and it was quite an open table if he could . two player and now he's in all kinds of trouble here and he'll just play here and try to kick this ball like this it's a great kick shot he doesn't want this even though he doesn't want it because I think he was fooled sorry yeah Earl he's asking if he can use a jump kick.
Yeah, Earl comes from that school where he doesn't like jump signs. He thinks it's a cheap trick. from the game where if you're snooker you should have to use a full cue to get out Well let me tell you he has the jump stick in hand so he's not that upset that's right he really rushed that shot. he's against the jump cue maybe that's why he's not very good with it because it was relatively easy to be honest with a shot clock why isn't the jump queue already set up why did he have to go to his case and wasting seconds putting it all together great ok you didn't know the rule but basically you should have known it yeah yeah like I said earl tries to avoid using the jump cue at all costs he just doesn't like it he's a little like that how is efren reyes i don't think i've ever seen hardy reyes use a jumping cue that's a bit like a golfer who's not a fan of a sand wedge yes he needs must yes he wants to get out of every trap with a pitching wedge you know how they did it in 1940 or something you're the expert golf you said he played a bit back in my day so will it be a turning point? the break there it is yes it was a much needed clearance from darren appleton in danger of breaking away at a point strickland not happy appleton a little happier it's 4-2 welcome back to gibraltar and the world masters of snooker is day two and the opening round bill strickland faces darren appleton strickland in charge of this match and is showing signs of his running form after appleton's dry break, leading 5-2 and hoping to join alex pagaline and fellow american shane van boning in the Quarter-finals is a run to eight for Strickland to break in the eighth.
Let's take another look at Earl's Break. He is doing quite well. I mean he's balling good. the winner of this match plays shane van boning so right now earl looks great we could have a great american quarterfinal now he has to play a good shot here just to get between the two of us and this looks perfect what he might play cause i dont think the four goes hes just peeking now i cant see hill playing a plant a lot of people at home think oh he will play the four against the nine but i dont see that and i want say yes. looks pretty easy from that view, all red, I think he could blow this up and try to get in the hole and throw the nine ball there. he's not happy about it I don't know but then again he won't waste too much time great view of the fingers there oh it's rattled and the rhythm the spin of the balls just helped him down and now we have to see her . something a little special here i'll tell you what amazes me that it went in at that rate and considering how far cushion to cushion made contact yeah i think with this table the shelf is pretty shallow so if i were a a little further back the loophole in whichthe ball definitely would have stayed up extension code earl thinks it should be called a timeout i think he's playing a bank shot here it's him oh he's been a bit lucky to be honest yes i think he masked it because now darren is approaching nine trying to pop this five ball when you missed a couple long shots and you really haven't had much table time this is a brutal shot it's really a list of brutal shots and it's a big shot and this is all a v this is the biggest shot of the game so far oh yummy shot it's going to give him so much confidence he didn't look comfortable at all on the opening bridge then he took his extension he calmed down he settled on the shot and that was like carl said potentially vital he stays hello I'm in the match i mean it could be a big big change right there because everyone should have run the balls really and this could have gone for that uh five balls in the side i mean q It was a shortcut but I think he should have played an attack shot there, even if he had played the bank shot and tried to deflect two cushions on the turn.
I mean he's a very attacking player and I don't know, maybe the shot clock plays too fast. but I think the shot clock went too fast from there and he didn't make up his mind so here you see the option to play it safe which left that open shot very difficult albeit with the bridge on the look of ball nine. in this perfection yeah right in the heart of the pocket too that will give you a lot of confidence thank you rock nine no button to break following up with three rock to fight so Darren Appleton has a very good chance to come back this game needs a ball down another good break is the one ball goes in no both balls no but he has no shot i dont think he can pop this ball hes just walking around to see where that ball really is because if it is touching the cushion and he can only hit the full ball oh he's in a tricky spot here he really is he might even have to play a push shot that's what it looks like yeah so clearly you can't pull that ball and he opened them.
I'm very surprised that he opened them to be honest. that was kind of like an insurance policy you know because all three of them were tied up darren took a quick look he said no to me yeah there you put it back thats the option on the push so its dealing of kicking this rail aside but I don't know where it's going it's a pretty good shot to be fair he's done well taking the one out I thought it would matter a bit more but he took it out it was actually a better shot than I don't think this is an American word, but he's a chantra, isn't he, yeah, all the time? yeah and darren's in an annoying spot i mean you can see the edge of one but it doesn't really look like he has much going on you can see he's just looking down the line of the shot there i think he's in actually kicking this ball I think he's trying to get off the bottom band and hit the right side of the ball yeah just hit it a little full this is a big frame now it really will be a great confidence booster too for darren if may won this safety battle and played poorly left a shot here tried to pocket the cue ball behind the brown seven now earl puts away his q so he feels like he could sit for a minute oh well done i guess that's not in the best position I would have liked.
Can he cut this ball? Yes. He will try to cut this ball on two rails and play all three. angle has to develop the five ball there or not that goes looks like it goes in the corner goes yeah i think it goes in the top left pocket this is a big rat now this is to pull it into one i think he will have to play the five on the side now that you chose to collide with the six you're just going to beat this four ball as such a good shot I see it's really good that's lovely it looks pretty good on this shelf now this is the key shot there is the famous Appleton's tenacity coming out here exactly you feel like right now he's finally finding his punch it's taken a while he hasn't had a lot of tournament time this year so far the thing with darren is he knows the importance of certain racks in the match and you know when just step back just give it a little more time I know it might not be as exciting to watch as running around the table but it's about not making mistakes at crucial points oh wow, as what happened there, wow I can't believe that. shocking that's tailed right acro Look at that and i don't know if phil can cut this ball.
It's cute. What he has done. He's aimed right through the cue ball and puts it aside and sends it to the sideline. Now can he cut this ball or does he? gotta play the bank shot he's playing the bank oh and he's made a brilliant shot there and he's played that screw back bank shot so if you miss the spin spins the eight on what miss is that Although I can't believe anyone in this field would miss that eight ball let alone darren appleton when he steamed ahead it looked like a change in momentum and now the score reads 6'3 in favor of earl the pearl strickland the mood of darren appleton is almost as black as the eight ball he just missed look at this it's hard to imagine a player of his skill would allow such a ball to go wide but he did then strickland deposited the eight he added the nine and that's why the man from the United States leads by six frames and the winner of this match w will move on to the quarterfinals here at the whirlpool masters to play shane van boning what a terrific performance earlier against daryl peach yeah and shane is sitting in the crowd watching this with a down ball and slice shot we've seen earl take this shot before in the match on ball two you're right ted and this rack is up on this shot and possibly four to five if he gets this ball and there you go again brilliant shot i must say oh now he's just making sure he gives himself the right angle because he doesn't have much of a gap there as you can see he has to try and get between nine and seven so Now, as you can see, I think he'll play two cushion here, and that's it. about the beat the beat is all here just to land in that space there you see it looks pretty good it looks pretty good yeah I think it just got there the beat was all after putting this orange five natural angle it will just bring you to the table oh wow oh strickland well he hasn't left it all easy for darren appleton as he walked away from the table the tail end was pushed into the ground with abject disgust pretty good safety shot from darren you're trying to use the ball nine to keep the five away take distance this is now resorting to another big frame as well i think she dropped this you know and the q is back to being bad at disguising her emotions i think that's an understatement no oh that It's unfortunate, I think he'll play from the bottom mattress on my lanes and try. and I hit the six ball so the six ball goes up the rail and the white one gets stuck on the seven maybe you can see this I don't I didn't think he could see the edge I don't think this is the right shot at the bottom of the rail band try to raise the six and get the pool behind the seven how he got it I don't know since he left the shot I don't think he did it because I think Earl would have ducked by now and squashed him so it's quite a shot well from darren there yeah he definitely has it there he'll have to get out of bed he's just looking to see if he has an extension he said time out again he refuses to say the word extension yes but you'll see it's not a time dead because a timeout when a shot clock is involved is actually a timeout. unlimited amount of time it takes this ball to hang and it's not going to think you've left it so yeah and here's another chance for darren appleton to get back in the game and this time he can't let it slip away as soon as it went in it went out of the two jaws and now I think it's landed a little weird he's putting the extension on the tail he's playing with a little extension that looks pretty good yeah that's perfect just playing a little screw now on the black towards down for the nine there you have it oh it's a great frame to steal that one i'll give credit to darren appleton and this is what you would expect from a player like him who is struggling uh oh he will be kicking himself though he played he played a game and he he got on the five ball and if he does the five he has won the rack and he has seven three up and you don't see him lose from there all of a sudden it's six four and if darren can break and run now six five he's a match for anyone and you can look, look early , furious with himself though thanks Rock Eleven they are on a powerful break behind with four racks to six and he doesn't have much success at the break but he needs to ball and the cue ball he's not on and he's balled three . on the fast break and has a shot, but he's in the pocket where he missed the two ball early in the game and the cue ball is on the wing. a lot of angle yeah that's a magical combination of numbers in pool it's one four seven he ripped it in half he saw that one that's shiny that's tremendous what a tough shot here no he just isn't pounding, balls crunching and is the only saving grace me?
I think Earl has a pretty broad point of view on this and he's obviously bridging all three so he's hampered by the three balls I don't think he can pop this and keep the extension code said the word extension, that's the magic word, now he's going to try to cut this ball. oh he's having a surprise he's played the bank shot to the side and hit that's so bad i'll tell you you could argue right now earl is falling apart yeah i think we have a new favorite in this match yes darren get these balls out now i think there is a new favorite in the match which is amazing when darren missed that eight ball you just wouldn't think this would have happened what has he played here? shots I've seen you play, all he has to do is duck on the bottom side with the ball and he's out. mistakes you can I don't think so and you can't even get out of the sideband.
You know he doesn't even get a chance to put all three. That's the problem with this shot. Now it is in all kinds. I wonder if it goes. It's going to be something like that. Everything is happening. Fantastic effort from Darren Appleton. What grinder is today. Earl is laughing. I mean, that's unreal, but it's not over yet. what a finish this has been and what a mix of brilliance and mistakes, yes the ups and downs, but right now, I like Appleton, I think he's more in this game, I mean Earl seems to have fallen apart here, yes. i think that might be a sign when you play a bad shot and you snook and kick two rails and you run in and out that was that was special and check this out an earl strickland scratch and then check out these two rail kick shot pots all three potes t the five run six to five now a chance to tie yeah and if you only join us to break the trail with five rest to six even though appleton is back on this at one point in these lower ebbs was four one and five two down he's got the ball down again nice break and he's got a shot you know these long shots on the two haven't been his favorite shots though today oh and it's kind of a shot the rat really where the balls are spread out he knows if he pops this ball he'll like to run the table it's all about this shot and it's another big frame because earl is just one away from reaching the hill nice shot nice shot i think he's going to draw this ball right now with body and integer and he just has to make sure it stays out of the middle pocket oh there's nothing in here it's like a present look at this he got into that beauty do you think that's a sign he's really sorry now, Yeah? well that's for sure just thinking when will i ss that um five balls to get up the hill gave him a bit of a g up but when darren snooked i mean he took a great shot to get out of snooker but there was a element of luck in that shot and I think that was the big turning point because I could have known it, it still could have been 7-4 up if you wanted, but instead it was six and five, it was a was a pivotal point that you can see Well, whatever happens, we are already guaranteed the closest match of the tournament so far and this could go downhill quite easily.
Great stuff here from Darren Appleton. There were several times, about 30-40 minutes ago, it seemed like he was completely out of it. not just on the score line but mentally i didn't even want to be here but he is the ultimate grinder not the six six who would have thought so we started best of 15 racks a race to eight now it comes down best of three it's all distilled in three highly pressurized pool racks and there's no doubt that the man with the drive is that man darren appleton so this is the break and it was a crunchy hit one hit so sweet and then it's did all the hard work and just a pretty elementary nine ball on the top rail and with that darren appleton is back on level terms and has six six this after being 4-1 5-2 and 6-3 behind and has done one ball and has oh where does the two ball go?
Will you stop for a plant at the last second? the two enteredto spoil the party good old nine ball don't think he can play if he can stick to the plan he has to hit the extreme edge of the single ball yeah i think he might get half a chance here you know the good from this. the shot is after if you do this plant the cue ball is going to spin so it should be on one as long as the one ball doesn't come close to the seven and draw now you see this looks pretty good this looks pretty good and you know i think the four moves into the five so he has a good chance here you know to go up the hill who would have thought he'd be on the hill before strickland amazing but this is the make up of the man and why he was so hardcore on seven straight moscone cup winning teams solid reliable yeah he's just checking out the six that's the big ball on this rack now uh that's perfect you just gotta make sure you avoid the middle sometimes you can hit the middle pointer he's got a good angle now you see he must be burning with confidence now after uh he was down 5-2 so it was five three six to three and it looked like Earl was about to go up the hill and now it looks like Appleton will be in the hill with this nine there it's an amazing change what a dynamite fight darren appleton yes transformation indeed for the first time Strickland stolid he realizes he might as well have missed the boat here because let's face it he wasn't just up front i was up front and playing in a far superior group and then everything changed around a couple of key mistakes a couple of small pieces of fortune for appleton and the game now seems to be slipping away from the pearl thanks rock 14 daryana potential break leading with seven racks six will love a ball on this break enough in an easy layout and has made a but he doesn't have a shot he knows he has a shot he just peaked to be able to but he has to try pop this ball and go all the way down and find a little space anywhere around this circle.
I love landing there. You have to pop this ball and come all the way down and try to land in this space roughly around that circular rock. I think it did. I think he got there. You know you need to hold on a bit. being happy with it i certainly think he can pop this ball n ay, and just use the nine as a bit of a plug for the cue ball. I don't know from that angle he's definitely on it because he'd be furious yeah yeah he's on it he needs to travel oh he landed on the wrong end he needed another two balls or two other balls further up the table and this match . he was done i don't know if he can draw this ball back to the side now i think he is i think he has to screw this ball back to the side you see and another push he's dicing with a nine ball i think that it's good. although you know this is edgy I think that's all he wrote folks this is the shot now take this ball out the angle will go up the table for the eight and from six three down these last two balls for the win well, he's going to be feeling pretty good about this win that clawed his way back but he's going to have had to eat his game even more against shane van boning, who played brilliantly before, although he was the mark of the man darren appleton, what a snooker fighter we have seen him on so many occasions particularly in a team setting when representing Europe and now as a great individual comeback to deny earl the pearl strickland was six three down and won by eight to six a remarkable match in the that strickland was denied a place in the quarterfinals darren appleton appleton george shane van boning and alex pagaline in the next round the next session will see the conclusion of the first round in matches with chris melli ng dennis orcollo jason shaw and joshua filler and then we'll have our first quarterfinal carl boyce going up against the master's most successful player ralph sukay you
