Dream Sewing Room Tour - 2020

May 31, 2021
Hello everyone, welcome back to my channel. In today's video I'm going to take you through my new studio, so the last time I did a studio

tour

I think it was early 2019, but I've since moved and have a new setup. and the cool thing about this new setup is that it's actually in my master bed

room

, so I decided to turn the master suite into my

sewing

studio. I spend most of my free time

sewing

and then I also work from home so I was able to set up a bit of work from home space within my studio so it made more sense since all I do is basically sleep in my

room

to set up the room into a smaller room and then turn the master suite into the kind of sewing studio of my

dream

s, which I have.

Basically everything in this studio is from Ikea, it's relatively affordable and you can argue it's not better made, but it gets the job done and has worked well for me, like most of the pieces in my last studio. they're from ikea and I've actually reused them a lot, I've just repurposed them in some way and you'll see, but yeah, pretty much everything is ikea stuff, so let's go ahead and take the

tour

, so here Here's the studio and I'm just going to do a quick review so you can get your bearings with the room. Well, let's start by going to the left, which is actually my bathroom, but it's important because this is where the closet is. es and the closet is where I keep my patterns as well as some of my other supplies, so on the left we have my clothes, my jewelry bags.

More Interesting Facts About,

dream sewing room tour 2020...

About two-thirds of my clothes are stored here and the other third is in the closet downstairs, um. in my actual room, so we have some craft carts, some curves, we have an ikea calyx shelving unit here with the fabric or fabric curves, I call them fabric bins because they're made of fabric, but they don't. They don't actually contain fabric, they just have various craft materials and office supplies, things like that. More curves. I have my painting books and then I have my sewing magazines here and I have my science books stored here because it's the only one.

I had room for them and here are some patterns that are too big to fit in my normal system, those are the wide ones like Vogue, so here is my normal system for storing patterns, which is a shelving system made by Rubbermaid and it's one of those rail systems where you use um, look, there's a little rail and you just focus, you don't want to focus and you just screw it to the wall, screw it to the wall and then you put it in brackets and you can see there's a support based on what size shelf or height you need and I have adjusted it to my patterns so I can easily access them within plenty of space and that allowed for four different shelves and I was able to get rid of many patterns to make room and what I do is buy these little 99 cent storage containers from Target, ditch the lids and these patterns, the regular size ones, fit pretty well.

I use my label maker to label the categories, so I file them by category, like dresses. or head things like that and then I sort them by brand and try to put them in numerical order, although sometimes I get lazy, so for other categories, like the vintage category, I'll separate them further into decades, so I just do These small dividers use cardstock and my label maker and as for my PDF patterns, you can see them posted here. Yes I have some light to help me because my closet is dark otherwise you wouldn't be able to see it so I use these hooks.
I make a hole in them and hang them and this system works very well for PDF patterns because folding them and storing them that way is a bit annoying because then you have to iron them and usually PDF patterns are put together with glue or tape, so having to iron them doesn't work very well, so that's my system. Oh and here I have my little cardboard mats that I use, I put them on top of my cutting table to protect it and protect the mat because I don't want it to stick to me when I put the PDF patterns together, so let's go ahead and get out of the closet and let's finish looking at the room, so here, this is my desk and this is where I do my work. at home and you might think I might have trouble working from home and also being in my sewing studio, but that's not the case.
I'm good at concentrating and I like my job so it makes it a lot easier so I have a TV which is great because I can play Pandora or watch Netflix. I have Apple TV connected so this is the first time I've had a TV in my sewing space and I like that my bookcase is here and I decided I wanted a real plant. In my room this time I have my gnomes that I like to make and I have my books. These are all my sewing books, some books on fashion and down here are some like storage for electronics and other office equipment.
You may be wondering what. this gadget is actually this is my setup for when I do sewing tutorials so this is new this is going to give me some nice aerial video shots I haven't used it yet and I'm excited to do so so this is new and here is my court. table, which is the favorite part for me and something I really wanted to make sure I had right, so what it is is that it's made up of two sets of Melm four-drawer dressers from ikea, of course, and I use the drawers to store fabrics, so the cutting table It works as a cutting table and fabric storage, so I guess I get more bang for my buck, so here on this side and in all these drawers I store my fabrics.
You can see that I'm not the best at organizing, but I try, I try to organize. to try it, here we go, the most important thing for me is that I'm five foot nine and a half and then I'm a little bit taller, is that I have a table that's high enough so that I'm not hunched over. with the dressers and the butcher block on top it's 41 inches tall and then this butcher block that I also bought from Ikea is I think 70 inches long by 42 inches wide so it's pretty big which is great for cutting . fabric, I'm sure you already know that and then here I have my curtains that I didn't really mention.
These curtains I got on target, of course, I could have made my own, but I'm lazy and didn't want to. to take care of the buttonholes so I just got some from Target and then I hem them so I can cover my extra fabric storage so normally I'll have four curves here but the other curves are currently over there and I'll show Why that? Normally that's how they are because my cat needs to see out the window, so yes, we have a trash can here and I don't use it for trash. In fact, I use it for fabric scraps and give it the fabric scraps.
For my friend who uses them for doll clothes, let's talk about this cutting mat for a minute. This thing is 40 inches by 60 inches and I specially ordered it from an art store and when I first bought it it smelled so bad that it gave in. I had a headache so I left it out for a few weeks, it didn't help. I gave it a bath with baking soda and then vinegar and dish soap and eventually the smell started to go down. Now there is still some smell, but. it's much better and you can see it from me having to deal with it, it's not as flat but still ok but I had to have a mat that was pretty big now I want to say you can get those Olfa mats that are 24 by 36 inches and you can tape them to the back and that will work great, the only thing is they won't have continuous numbering like a large mat or Olfa will.
It also sells a 36-inch by 72-inch mat. Now there are three different pieces and you have to screw them together to have these like little metal plates on the sides where the mats connect. I thought about it but I was against it because I don't want my fabric to stick to them and possibly get damaged so I really wanted to stay away from that and if I couldn't get the smell out of this mat I would just buy three olfa mats and I would glue it with adhesive tape. Honestly, it's okay, so let's go. I have my drawing chair, which is great when I want to sit down and glue patterns together or whatever I'm doing.
I put up some hooks with 3m sticks so I could keep my measuring tapes hanging there. and then I did the same thing here, but I have a cool ruler and here these bins should normally be underneath, but like I said, my cat likes to sleep by the window, so honestly, that's what my sewing room is really like . I would leave them out because of this guy, yeah, sorry, and then I have my cart, I keep it back here, so I could put some things in like weird things and then my sprays, like my starch or my best pressed water bottles. rollers and then as I mentioned before I have fabrics in here yeah the drawers open all the way and I can still walk behind it sorry mate so here's my ironing station.
Our ironing stations allow me to step back a bit. Regular It's a gravity feed system and I made a video about it, so I have an IV pole that holds the water bottle and tubing, and on the left you'll see there's this weird little bag with jacks on it and filled with weights. and I use it to counter balance the tank because as you can imagine when the tank is full of water it is quite heavy so it needs some balancing. The ironing board is from Burbancha. I bought it on Amazon, it is extra wide and very resistant.
It's worth the money and I'm so happy I invested in a good ironing board in the first place. I didn't think it would matter, but it did. I also have a review of my gravity feed iron. I'll link it in case you're interested and then below I have some pressing tools like a ham and a roll of manga, all good, moving. I have here, this is the ikea large chalice shelf system and if you've seen my previous tour of the sewing studio, you can do it." You know I used to store my fabric in this, but I wanted to protect it better, so I started putting it in drawers and tubs and now I put most of my everyday sewing tools in here, so you can see.
I also have these fabric bins from Ikea here. It's nice that they match these sterlite plastic folds. It's great here. I have different feet or parts for my sewing machines. This one is like batting and different types of um the interface of all my serger thread is just lying here, not very organized, but honestly I'm fine with that and then I have some um this is like a bunch of satin on the back of the box to line, then my various curves here. I have random craft things and this one with zippers and then interlining it.
I have bias binding tape and this one is elastic and then we have some ribbing for hoodies and bomber jackets. Lace trim. Ribbons for lace laces. This container is like tailoring. supplies shoulder pads look more like electronic plugs I don't know I have so many electronic parts and plugs and all that and then I have an empty container and then down below I have like snap eyelets things like that and up here look Through my drawers I have to keep my duct tape and others types of iron tape here. I have some resin for my plate cleaner.
This is like a little meter to help determine where to space your buttons and ironing templates randomly. things here I have transfer paper for marking patterns and some chalk wheels and on this one I have my exact knives toothpicks little cutting mats and then this thing is hot like a hot cutter this thing here so the blade gets hot and this It's great if you're working with hardware cloth like lemay because it will seal the edges of a small star. My friend gave me these. These two drawers hold my thread, so I used to keep them on one of those little wooden spools. racks but I don't really have room for this here more thread this is really convenient and also on those spool racks I found that the threads were unraveling and hanging everywhere it seemed a little messy bobbins bobbins galore and then here are my needles, like this which I have machine needles and they are organized in these little cups that I bought at the target hand needles so that's this unit and then you can see I have this cool color changing light behind it and it's from ikea and I.
I really like lights, so I had to have that here. I have another one of those trash cans that I keep my scraps of fabric in. With this one I took the lid off and just use it for storage like my oak tag. rolls of maybe fabric or interlining or tracing paper and all that, so I have my dress form that I've tried to pat to make it look like my body as best as I can, but we'll see, okay. So let's look at my sewing stations, so I actually have two tables that are bracketed, so let me go under the tables because it's a little dark, so look, they're bracketed, and then I have these two baskets with their wires . baskets and they are screwed to the table and they hold this very long surge protector and all my machines are connected to this so I don't have tons of cables on the bottom or on the floor all I have are my pedals and that'sreally cool because it's not fun to have lint and threads on your cables and wires everywhere and your feet it's not, it's not pretty, so it's really one of my favorite parts, it's very silly, but not having wires all over the amazing floor, as for my sewing stations, if you want, I have here this is my cover stitch, it's covered, it's a janome a cpx 1000 or a thousand cpx something like that.
I have my first overlocker, which is the brother 1034d. I still use it, it's a great machine super affordable like 150 dollars or something when I bought it a few years ago and here is my bernina b330, this was my first bernina and I still use it, I still love it, it's a great machine and I recently invested in this. It's a bernina b 770 and I bought it because it has a built-in dual feed, which is a lot like having a foot walk and it makes life easier when you want to match stripes or work with slippery fabrics, things like that and it has giant coils that, if you don't like running out of bobbins this is a life saver and a lot of other features but I won't get into that now but I will say I bought this machine it was a floor model so I got a few hundred dollars off and then I bought It's used, so I went to sewing machines and it was a trade.
So I actually saved several thousand dollars on this so I highly recommend buying used machines or floor models from your dealer to save money because these machines are not cheap and then I have my other overlocker which is the baby lock, Imagine and I love this machine. Because it makes threading so easy, it has that cold air threading system. I forget the name, but it's amazing. I also bought the floor model of this from my local dealer and saved almost half the amount if I had bought it new and it's great. shape so I recommend doing that, here is my little cabinet for the feet of my berminas and both machines can share feet which makes life a lot easier and cooler because these feet are expensive and here it is, it's actually not , I mean, that's what you call it. a pegboard, but this is an ikea system and I like it better than the pegboards you get at home depot.
They have great hooks and clips and all kinds of accessories, and I think it's really great quality at a very affordable price. I have my measuring tools and my curves and a couple of arms for my dresses then we have my rotary cutters and my scissors and then we have some more gnomes so these gnomes are pattern weights I make them very heavy so a little further. Here my clips, yeah, so these are the ones that hold my patterns when I cut and they're great sewing helpers and I have my marking tools. I have more scissors, seam gauges and seam rippers, all that jazz and then.
I have a big book on feet, so that book is all about the feet that you can get for your berninas and tells you all about them and what you can do with them. Great book, and then the last part is a full length mirror. because when you sew, that's really helpful so you can see, check your fit and, uh, a couple of trash cans underneath you would need trash cans and then I have this cheap little chair, seriously, it's like I don't know 50 60 dollars . It's actually quite comfortable, I actually like it a lot and then when my cousin comes to sew and that brings me to this point, you say: why do you have so many sewing machines? maybe because my cousin is coming to visit and she and I like to sew together, so I really wanted to have basically two sewing stations, that's why I have the sewing machine and the serger here and another sewing machine and the serger there so that each You have a station when she comes and then you can just throw. the chair here and use it there.
I don't have to have another chair, but yeah, I think that's it. Maybe I can show you. I added some additional lights. I put this in because all I had there were these recessed lights. and I needed more so I bought this at Lowe's to give me a little extra light when I work at night and it's fantastic. Yes, you're probably wondering what it is. It's like a gooseneck so I can hold my phone just in case. I want to record with that just thinking about anything else I can show you or if you have any questions leave them in the comments below.
I will be happy to answer you, so I hope you like the tour, please leave comments below about what. you liked it and I guess what you didn't like um but this is my personal space and it works well for me and I enjoy it and the point is that I feel calm, peaceful and happy in my space and I do and I'm very lucky and grateful to to be able to have such a nice workspace, so I want to thank you very much for watching this video and have a great day.
