Douglas A. Collins full opening statement at first Judiciary impeachment hearingMay 05, 2020
I think the President and it's interesting that again the parliamentary consultations and I think some were actually some of the things that I'm going to discuss today because we come here today in a different arena, look for everyone who hasn't been here before. This is a new room, it's new rules, it's a new month, we even have nice stickers for our staff so we can walk in because we want this to matter, this is
impeachmentbecause we've done a terrible job. this committee before, but what is not new is basically what the President just reiterated what is not new are the facts what is not new is the same sad story what interests you before I get into my part of my
statementis simply what it was said the president that we were worried that we would redo mr.
Muller we are also saying, quoting him, that the attention of the American people should be focused on foreign interference. I completely agree with him, except I guess the American people didn't include the
judiciarycommittee because we didn't address it, we didn't have to do anything in the
hearings to delve into this issue, we passed election bills but we didn't delve into the what mr. Muller talked about taking his own report and having
hearings on that, we didn't, so I guess the American people don't include the House Judiciary Committee, you know, how interesting, we also just heard an interesting discussion, We're going to have a Today there were a lot of interesting discussions about the Constitution and other things, but we also talked about the founders.
More Interesting Facts About,
douglas a collins full opening statement at first judiciary impeachment hearing...
What's interesting is that the president talked a lot about the founders from the quotes and, again, that's why we hear that the founders are concerned about foreign affairs. influence, but what he also didn't cite was that the founders were really worried about political
impeachmentbecause you just don't like the guy you have on the team since November 2016, the president has talked about impeachment since last year when he was elected president two years ago, on November 6 and 17, before he even swore in his Jeremie, so don't tell me this is new evidence and new things and new things, we may have a new courtroom, we may have new microphones and we may have chairs. that's not comfortable, but this is nothing new, friends, this is sad, so what do we have here today?
You know what I'm thinking. I looked at this and the interesting thing is that there are two things that have become very clear: this impeachment trial is not really about the facts, if it were, I think the other committees would have sent recommendations for impeachment now that they are putting it in this committee because If it goes wrong, I guess they want to blame Adam Geoff's committee and seeing that others want to blame this committee for going wrong but they are already writing articles don't be fooled they are already preparing for this we have already gone after this with Ukraine after numerous failures a Muller Cohen and almost the list goes on monuments the list goes on but the American people are smart not to see us legislate but if you want to know what is really driving this there are two things it is called the clock in the calendar the clock in the calendar most people in life if you want to know what they really value you look at their watch look at their checkbook on their calendar you know what they value that's what this committee values time they want to do it before the end of the year why because the president does it he said just a second ago because we are afraid of next year's elections we are afraid of the elections that we will lose again so we have to do this now the clock on the calendar is what is driving the impeachment trial not the facts when we understand this that is what that the witnesses here will say today, what do we do?
I have here today what is really interesting today and for the next few weeks is the United States. We'll see why most people don't go to law school, no offense to our professors, but please, really, we'll bring you here today to testify. about things that most of you have already written about for opinions that we already know outside of classrooms where you may be preparing for finals to discuss things that you probably haven't even had a chance late unless you're really good on TV seeing the ratings over the last few weeks. You couldn't have digested yesterday's Adam Schiff report or the Republican response in any real way.
Now we can be theorists all we want, except the American people. You're really going to look at this and say huh, what are we doing? because there is no witness plan for this committee. That's an interesting thing, frankly, there is no plan except next week, an ambiguous hearing on the presentation from the hips of the other committee that sent. us the report and the Judiciary Committee, I'm still not sure what they will present and nothing more, no plan. I asked the president before we left for Thanksgiving to stay in touch, let's talk about what we have because history will shine a bright light.
We started this morning with crickets until I asked for a witness the other day and let's just say it didn't go well, there is no complainant and, by the way, today it was shown that he or she is not provided with the identity protection that is not in the statute is something that was discussed by Adam Schiff. We also don't have Adam Schiff, who wrote the report. He said yesterday at the press conference. I'm not going to send staff to do that. He's not going to do it, but you. I know if he was learning how to do it, he would come and beg us, but you know, here's the problem.
He sums it up very simply like this, just 19 minutes after noon on Inauguration Day 2017, the Washington Post published the headline about the campaign to recall the president has begun Mark Zaid, who would later become the attorney for the infamous whistleblower, tweeted in January 2017, the coup has begun, the impeachment trial will eventually follow and in May of this year, Al Green says that if we don't impeach the president, he will be re-elected. If he wants to know what's going on, here we go, why is everything I've said up to this point about no facts nothing to the Judiciary Committee?
We went two and a half weeks before this hearing was held during the Clinton administration. Two weeks and a half. I didn't discover their names until less than 48 hours ago. I don't know what we're playing at. Hide the ball. It's pretty easy what you're going to say, but we can't even clarify that. So what are we doing? for the next two weeks I have no idea which president just put a bag in the bag that you biggest will hear about the report, but nothing more if we are simply not going to have witnesses to the facts when we are the rubber stamp that hides behind, they are very Rubber stamp that the president talked about 20 years ago, what a shame for this committee that the impeachment committee simply takes from other entities and rubber stamps.
You see? Why do the things I say matter about witnessing the fight and actually hearing and having this? due process because, by the way, just a couple of months ago the Democrats dressed up a lot and said we're going to have due process protection for the president and good justice throughout this committee. This is the only committee where the president would even have a chance, but no offense to you law professors, the president has nothing to ask of you, they are not going to give you anything he can't read and your lawyers have nothing else. . Put witnesses here who can witness facts. who can really be questioned that is justice and all the lawyers on this panel know this is a sham but what I also see here are quotes like this there should never be an impeachment with a close vote or an impeachment supported by one from our major political parties or imposed by another such impeachment will produce bitterness and divisive politics for years to come and will call into question the very legitimacy of our political institutions that the American people are watching, they will not forget that you have the votes, you may have the force but you do not have the legitimacy of a national consensus or the constitutional imperative, the partisan coup d'état will go down in infamy in the history of the nation, how about this one?
I think the key point is that Republicans are still running a railroad job. without any attempt to achieve a fair procedure and today when the Democrats offered amendments, they offered motions and a committee to say that we should
firstdiscuss and adopt standards so that we know that we are dealing with standards for impeachment that were rejected or discarded out of order when we say the important thing is to start analyzing the issue before we simply have a vote without any investigation
firstwhich was rejected and discarded, so, frankly, the whole question of what material should be published and what is secondary, but that's it what we discussed.
The essential question here is to establish a fair process and determine whether the country subjected this country to an impeachment process that was dismissed out of order. The Republicans refused to let us discuss it. That's all the presidents, Nadler before he was president, I guess. 20 years make a difference it's an interesting time we are having a fact listen peach you just heard a one sided presentation of facts about this president today we will present the other side that is so conveniently omitted remember that justice does dictate it but maybe not here because We are not programming anything else.
I have a Democratic majority that is poll-tested, what they think they should be called, what they think the president did. Wow, that doesn't follow the facts, we just have a deep-rooted relationship. I hate a man who came to the White House and did what he said he was going to do. The most surprising question I received from journalists in the first three months of this gentleman's presidency was this: Can you believe he is putting forward these ideas? I said yes. He ran on them, he told the truth and did what he said. The problem here today is that this will also be one of the first impeachments that the president mentioned.
Even Buy It, the Democrats and Republicans were not really in dispute in this case, not only are their mutual contradictions in dispute, there are no established facts here, in fact, there is nothing that presents an impeachment here, except that the president carries carry out its work in the way that the Constitution saw fit to do it, this is where we are today, so the interesting thing I mean to most of you here is that this may be a new time, a new place and It is possible that we are all clean. and it looks nice for impeachment, but this is not impeachment, it's just a simple railroad job nowadays, it's a waste of time because this is where we are, so I close today with this, it didn't start with Muller, It doesn't start with a phone call, you know where this started, it started with tears in Brooklyn in November 2016 when the election was lost, so here we are, there is no plan, no witnesses in fact it's just a rubber stamp to what we have, but hey, we have law professors here. a start to a party
