Have you ever had to read a really boring book for school something you really didn't want to open because you had better things to do I mean after all what was your incentive to bother getting a good grade sure but I'm sure you Many of you know that didn't stop us from sometimes dropping out, so what exactly would be a more surefire motivator? do it

doki

doki

literature

club

is a free visual novel released in 2017 by team salvato with most of the work done by lead developer dan selvato himself dan was previously known primarily for his work in the modding community for super smash brothers melee So when he went away for a couple of

years

to work on something original, the fact that he apparently brought back a slice-of-life dating sim about a book

club

seemed pretty out of character to anyone with a superficial knowledge vel familiarity of man what exactly would have compelled him to make such a drastic genre jump for his first original foray into the field of game development, and it turns out that there is much more to ddlc than meets the eye and yes, I know metagames that appear one way but turn out to be another are pretty much their own entire genus at this point, but what it lacks in a basic unquote sense of originality quickly overcomes him with his chest puffing out with confidence because let's get one thing straight right away the bat doki doki

literature

club is awful yeah no yeah you heard me correctly this is the game you're Seeing here with pretty pastel colors and tropey anime waifus vying for your superficial affections, this game is one of the few horror games out there. to this day it scares the hell out of me since games like this tend to get a reputation pretty quickly I doubt there are many people who don't feel at least tangentially familiar with wi what tricks doki doki has up his sleeve or what kind of content to expect from him, but just to be clear that this is the special month of Halloween and this is our first stop on that train, this video isn't so much a ddlc review as it is a hindsight dissection and though I'll try to give all the context it takes for a newcomer to follow through on this video will vastly spoil every nook and cranny of the game there is to experience and given the nature of a game like this I think it should be experienced first hand and spoiler free if the content doesn't it's too much for you and please keep in mind that the content warning for this game is no laughing matter, trust me this game really doesn't mince words and has a lot of content that As I anticipate that it would be downright upsetting to many people before they even watch this video let alone play the actual game, I implore you if you are sensitive to disturbing material to look for The Warning of Intent link on the game's official website on the screen and description below, decide for yourself if you feel comfortable and confident enough to enjoy this content and if you're not that's ok I'll see you in the next one trust me you're good but for those of us Let's stay, let's keep going, I'm Nesme Va and this is a 3rd anniversary retrospective of Team Salvato's psychological pain simulator, Doki Doki Literature Club. niche games that have always been deeply rooted in visual novels something that took much longer to catch on in the west than obviously in Japan what is widely considered the first real standard for the genre is a 1992 game called dokuse released for PC 98 , which involves learning the clichés and times of day that a specific girl in town will be up for, well, he was pretty blunt about the point he was making, however, the genre really peaked in 1994 with a graphic turbo release 16 of tokimeki memorial on may 27 in japan. in particular, the use of social stats that are mechanically raised based on player performance, think social links from personal games or something similar. tokimeki is also quite famous for its bombshell feature where if you ignored a girl for too long or don't really hang out with them they might actually get mad and start gossiping about you to their friends which would lower your reputation and leave drop your sympathy meter like rocks on the board.

The typical features of a dating sim usually involve a male avatar living what essentially matters. to a player-driven virtual harem anime where, for some inexplicable reason, every girl remotely attractive in your general si tuational radius has the potential to fall head over heels for you based on bifurcated and ultimately arbitrary conversation choices that they often statistically affect their perspective on you in stages or on some sort of internal love meter. The game usually takes place for a predetermined amount of time and ends when the player fails to properly win over a girl or ends their route, often successfully marrying or confessing to her or, in more extreme cases, you know that often. there are multiple girls of different character types in a given dating sim, which encourages replayability for players who feel attached to more than one of the available romantic options;

More Interesting Facts About,

doki doki literature club three years later...

Relationship building is the core component of the game and certain amounts of trial and error and even saving the dregs are generally quite often expected activities in the player's quest for love as one. you could expect this to lead to a predictable rise in popularity of dating sims with people who needed to add a sim to get closer to the word date sorry that was bad im not saying all people who play the dating sims are creepy and cant get a real date im just saying alot of them are but however this also predictably led to many of the dating sim game tropes being aimed at people of this bent and many Some of the more cartoonish and unrealistic reflections of the love fantasies that plagued some of the more inane varieties of these dating sims were certainly conceived out of this appealing demographic.

I'm not here to fully criticize the dating sim genre. I'm not exactly the most erudite and equipped to do so, but suffice to say that the genre certainly has its examples of failures to see It pays to be skeptical, and while I would think it to be unfair and radical to cast this shadow over the genre as a whole, it's hard to separate the mainstream conception of the genre from these often grainy themes that, by the way, the doki literature club doki is certainly not the first of its kind released in september 2017, ddlc hit the gaming scene 25

years

after dokuse and 23 years after tokimeki's memorial at a time when even the most uninitiated gamers probably still had a fairly firm grasp of what at least the superficial concept of a dating sim was likely to resemble the deeper tropes or idiosyncrasies may have been lost in the virtual waifu legos, but for the most part, these elements of the game have been extended to other genre titles or at least parodied enough to become ubiquitous in gaming circles and this familiarity, both for Deeply ingrained as casually observed, it led ddlc to create a rather concise image of itself by posting an image that was quickly broken by one simple fact: the game content warning written clearly on its ichio and steam pages and pushed right on your face at launch, nothing about this game's art-style premise or overall presentation screamed psychological horror, and yet the w Results presented on the 10th seemed nonetheless intent on ensuring potential players weren't misled. be fooled into thinking this game was as simple as it seemed, hey it was free right?

Visual novel enthusiasts and newbies alike couldn't spend any money at all, and even worse, a little time and see what all the fuss was about and who knows, maybe it would turn out to be something really special, well, yes, it certainly was and what one could find beyond the veil of cheesy poems and engaging character designs was a veritable nest. from metafictional terror, psychological torment, startlingly disturbing imagery, and a fourth wall as thin as a wet graham cracker, not only that they would find criticism of the genre that at first intended to inhabit self-conscious crevices at its own expense and perhaps even the value of a whole storyline of hidden content within the game itself to explore and interpret, so what the heck is going on with this game?
You may ask yourself, it's a good question and, like everything, it's great. answers, we'd probably better break this down from the beginning, so let's take a moment aside to talk about the plot and the general progression of ddlc from its humble beginnings to the end credits, the game begins with the protagonist self-inserted in a vaguely Japanese setting Invited by his cheerful childhood friend, Sayori, to join her in the high school literature club to get more out of it despite his initial reluctance, he agrees to give it a try and quickly meets the other members of the archetypal brash tsundere club. natsuki the shy bookworm archetype yuri and the energetic and very popular club president monica throughout the following days of the plot the protagonist must write poems in a minigame where you select certain words and phrases for both of them to participate in the club and potentially woo which of the particular club members you prefer with monica notably being a non-ro option leaving only sayori yuri and natsuki as your options to continue as the club prepares for the upcoming cultural festival sayori confesses to the protagonist that she has always struggled with a rather debilitating depression, which is why she has trouble getting out of bed at time while this and his apparent difficulty seeing it. making the new friends seem a bit out of left field at first in terms of their stark realism compared to the previous anime-like shenanigans that penned the game thus far, the trajectory of this plot thread at first doesn't seem like much of a cause Much to the alarm, however, the next day, Monika presents the player with a rather unhinged poem that Sayori supposedly sent for use at the festival, causing the protagonist to realize something was seriously wrong and he rushed back to his house to see how he was when he opened the door we see. that sayori is dead having committed suicide by hanging herself at which point the game ends abruptly this is what many people would call the end of the first act of the game and this is where the core experience of ddlc really kicks off in the meantime what players watch out for you might have noticed is that the game folder associated with ddlc has started to change a bit seemingly on its own.
Our first glimpse of this comes in the form of an image file that suddenly appears in the game's directory titled Happy Thoughts. This somewhat distorted image appears to be a cropped and distorted version of a special poem that the player can receive spontaneously within the game. no source and no prompt, which is also interchangeable with various random special poems Poem choices the game can make based on randomly generated variables whose original image resembles a crudely drawn stick figure of sayori hanging all is not well here and this is compounded by the strange error message that appears behind Sayori's hanging corpse during her shocking ending. scene see traceback.txt for more details huh experience died this appears to be a recreation of a crash error displayed by the rinpy game engine, a visual novel engine used to create games such as ddlc, which can display errors similar to this when something in the game code goes wrong, in fact, from the very beginning, ddlc has kept a file in its directory called traceback.txt and whereas before it only contained launch information and surface level diagnostics intended solely for technical documentation, this is where we start to see just the tip of the horrible ddlc iceberg within the swathes of technical jargon we find a hidden message and the content is far from comforting the text reads oh god i didn't break anything.
Did I hold back a second? I can probably fix this. nothing happens, while this may seem abstract and even a bit obtuse at first, the sick feeling in the stomach is only going to grow from this point on, since obviously when the player rests they art the game to try to write what gone wrong something peculiar happens the player returns to the menu where all previous save files have been erased sayori's character portrait is just a mess where it used to be and when the game starts again sayori is conspicuously absent her name and all dialogues become garbled and no characters seem to remember or verify that she even existed to begin with, furthermore, they begin to crop upmore visual irregularities with increasing frequency, monica taking sayori's place as taunt and the protagonists joining the club and the other members of the club in values only briefly alluded to in previous routes became much more pronounced and visibly worrisome here with yuri becoming increasingly unstable, possessive and prone to self-harm and natsuki becoming much more transparent about her disdain for yuri and her apparent abuse at the hands of her father this is where one might notice a file added to her directory on amidst all of this conflicting information a title that reads simply run first time this is a file that is added automatically to indicate that act 1 of the game has been completed, therefore it locks the player out and enters act 2 of the game at as detention begins to increase. it is where ddlc hits the point of no return in other words and will make sure you understand that this is not a journey to be taken lightly.
The game's atmosphere quickly collapses into a frantic mess of contradictions. Inconsistencies and visually disturbing effects. the classroom, among many other things, this culminates in a veritable domino chain of gruesome realizations as yuri presents an indecipherable poem to the player covered in her own blood that monica seems to largely ignore natsuki's concern, who presents you a poem that is actually a scream disguised as help begging you to get help for yuri only to be immediately manipulated into telling you to ignore the message and devote your attention solely to monica an odd command not only because of the visible manipulation she is clearly experiencing but also for its specificity considering that monica herself up to this point has not been a romantic option.
To begin with, after a heated argument between the

three

girls about who the protagonist will help with the preparations for the festival, Yuri forces the other two girls to go out for a moment alone with the player, at which point he confesses his love for you in private . the answer doesn't matter whether or not you accept his confession or reject it, the result remains the same as yuri pulls out a large knife and stabs herself repeatedly before collapsing on the ground due to broken game scripts, the player he's now stuck motionless in the classroom with yuri's decaying body for the rest of the weekend and while the skip option might make the endless clicking a moot point, it still takes a few minutes to fully comb through to the end. meanwhile, a file called have a nice weekend is added. in the game directory and disappears immediately after the weekend scene ends.
When opened with a text editor, there is some base64-encoded text hidden inside. which, when translated, is once again hidden by a visioneer ciphertext code, this file appears to have been added in version 1.1.0 of the game, at which point monica's official twitter account added a shortcode to his biography, the code was the title of a previously encoded poem that could be translated with base64 by natsuki which had an encrypted code of libitina using the same key in the text of the file revealed a short sentence what is a man without knowing the rich aroma of the future the complex hot balance of the present and the bittersweet aftertaste of the past said coded poem by natsuki by the way it is titled open your third eye and it says the following i can feel the tenderness of her skin through the knife as if it were an extension of my sense of touch my body almost convulses there's something incredibly weak deep inside screaming to resist this uncontrollable pleasure but i can already tell i'm being pushed to the limit i can't no I can stop after r Returning to the classroom at the end of the weekend, Natsuki is horrified to see Yuri's dead body and quickly leaves to vomit.
Monica appears shortly after apologizing to the player for the boring weekend she spent very emotionally there before saying she'll make it up to him at which point she immediately opens an in-game command console and deletes yuri and natsuki's character files. from the actual game directory on your computer and sends you back to the main menu. This is the end of the second act and this if you hadn't done it. I already realized this is coming from a mile away which is why monica has been so often on the other girls' lips lately monica is pulling the strings she has a direct self-awareness of her place as a character in the game plus she has the ability to restructure the very game she inhabits to the point where she can cause everything that has come before and even wipe other characters outright, just wondering if I suddenly understand what happened to sayori now let's take a step back before After talking about the plot of the game and the next climactic ending which is act 3, let's talk about one of ddlc's apparent inspirations or at least a happy coincidence that makes it seem that way, let's talk very briefly about kimi tokunojo to konojo no koi, this game also known as toteno or officially localized as you me and her is a game released by nitro plus for Windows on June 27, 2013 that came out ó long before ddlc but only received one localization perhaps due to its cult resurgence from its comparisons on steam in may 2020. the game follows shinichi, an average guy who leads a quiet life and once close friends with the The most popular girl in his school, Miyuki, everything changes for him.
One day, when he meets the class weirdo, Owly, who suddenly tries to kiss him on the school roof, he is interrupted by Miyuki, who decides along with Shinichi to try and bring a sense of friendship. The personality and structure of this girl's strange life, at which time they all learn together what it means to be friends with some of shinichi and miyuki's latent feelings awakened during their time together as the triangle draws closer, the ends are starting to fray and arguably the most infamous aspect of the game and what drew so much attention to it on its initial release is starting to become horrifyingly apparent - the player is treated to pretty standard path one and yes I did say first because despite having two, the game actually crashes. you can't romance owie in your first playthrough despite willingness to have no days in plot drama the game's first playthrough inevitably ends in victory as shinichi and miyuki rekindle their relationship they kiss under the stars and promise be together forever, at which point the player who has successfully completed the arc and the game they were in can now go back and start a new game where they can romance the other girl, this is now where the Things get weird, though the game is still largely innocent as the last one, the finale of aoue's route crashes a bus into you with the reveal that during the consummation of their relationship between shinichi and aoi, miyuki has been hiding under the bed the whole time after crawling out and staring at you proceeds to kill Owi with a baseball bat severely injures shirichi and regrets that they betrayed her Shinichi pleads that he hasn't betrayed her at all because they were never in a relationship, but then something doubly horrible happens. miyuki tells shinichi that she's not talking to him, she's talking to you, at which point he looks the player straight in the face through the center screen, as you've chosen to replay the game to romance, owie miyuki. the player who has angered you by cheating on you is mad at you because he interpreted your first game as romantic devotion not only to shinichi, but to yourself, which is now broken, even reprograms the game so you can't save or load another file and scolds you for trying to escape the consequences of your cheating if you try to do so, there's a lot really unspeakable.
Gruesome and overtly pornographic stuff from now on in the game that I can't mention or show if I don't want my video to be flagged for content violations, but suffice to say that the game doesn't really contain anything and just follows an extensive guide from From this point, it can really guarantee that any player will be able to achieve a decently satisfying conclusion to the game, which requires a lot of praise to Miyuki and even restarting the entire game world to achieve, even the main character. He directly asks you before the universe resets one last time to go a route and stop hurting the two girls so you don't fuck him up on this any more than you already have and even then he's still a straight up Assume that will use saved backups or similar methods to cheat your way out of this promise, you me and her is certainly a controversial game and there's a lot about it that one could argue is in very bad taste.
Since it's a clever deconstruction of dating sim tropes, what matters in its relationship with ddlc, however, is that this core, this impetus behind wanting to dissect and critique the very elements of a genre within its own limits , became an important cornerstone of what would become ddlc. in trying to build from the foundation that this game provided and while this game provided one of the most shocking meta twists of its gaming era, ddlc took this moment and extended it into a continuous rollercoaster of anxiety-inducing sharp twists throughout the game. way and i know if i don't mention this here i'll get feedback on it the fans of this thing are pretty dedicated so the context provides solidly that act 3 starts automatically when act 2 ends with the protagonist being placed in a room Located in front of Monica, at which point she fully reveals her status as a self-aware video game character, similar to our bat-wielding Miyuki, she can modify or delete character files and rewrite parts of the game script to suit his needs, but he has found more complex tasks difficult explaining the increasing instability of the game world as a domino effect of his manipulation, it also reveals that she has feelings for you, the player realized that you are her only connection to a genuine human being. presence in a world that is full of pre-programmed variables and self-contained personalities designed solely for the purpose of falling in love with you being so alone in the world she lives in feeling like she's the only outcast girl who doesn't get reconciliation for her horrible epiphany of her own world, monica has been orchestrating all of the previous chaos to make sure that her attention lands squarely on her, thus giving her the validation and love of a real human person that she knows isn't fake from this point on, the game basically stops the cycle through randomly generated topics that monica can talk to the player about and this can get quite interesting dating sim in particular, mixed feelings, uh, given everything we've said about gender and its convention h So far, it seems understandable, doesn't it?
And the game is more than happy to enjoy it. that topic here on several of monica's threads actually by the way there's something that's been bothering me you know how this happens in japan well I'm assuming you either knew or at least decided that I probably do, I don't think you're actually saying that at any point where this occurs is this even really Japan, I mean aren't the classrooms and stuff a little weird for a Japanese school, not to mention everything is in English? It's like everything is there because it has to be and the actual environment is an afterthought.
It's giving me an identity crisis. All my memories are very hazy. I feel like I'm home, but I have no idea where home is. First of all, I don't know how to describe it better, imagine looking out the window, but instead of your usual garden, you are in a completely unknown place. Would you feel like you were at home? Would you like to go out? I guess if we never leave this room, it doesn't really matter anyway. I've always wondered what it is about these character archetypes that people find so appealing. Anyway, their personalities are completely unreal, like imagining if there was someone like Yuri in real life. it means she's barely able to form a complete sentence and forget about natsuki sheesh someone with her type of personality not only does she get cute and moody every time things don't go her way she could go on but i think you get the point of view there isn't people really attracted to these weird personalities that literally don't exist in real life.
I'm not judging or anything after all. I was also drawn to some pretty weird stuff. I'm just saying it fascinates me. taking out all the components of a character that makes them feel human and leaving just the cute stuff, it's concentrated cuteness with no real substance, you wouldn't like it more if it were like that, would you? Maybe I'm feeling a little insecure because you're playing this game in the first place at this point after everything you've been through.from all your knowledge of the genre through all your surprise and through all your emotions betrayed this game must have led you to feel that this is the crux this is the most damning criticism of them all this is the uncertainty and the single critical eye which leads ddlc to not just be a scary dating sim but a scary game about dating sims to successfully finish the game at this point the player needs to get into the game. ctory manually and delete monika's character file as she initially lashes out at the player, she eventually forgives him and ruefully admits that she's done horrible things that she needs to atone for, at this point she restores the game excluding herself and allows her to start one last time The standard ending sees Sayori introducing herself as the president of the literature club, but opening the fourth wall and revealing that because she's the president, she knows all about the previous game loops and thanks you for getting rid of Monica.
Quickly adopting Monica's Possessive Attitude, she attempts to isolate the player before Monica stops her and eliminates her to save the player. Monica decides that the game world cannot exist in harmony with the real world, and in order to save everyone and the player, the emotional turmoil of experiencing these horrible things again wipes out the game entirely and disbands the club because, unquote, no happiness ness can be found in it in its conflicting elements and game appeal Dan Salvato explains that his love-hate relationship with anime stems from the abundance of clichés and plot tropes used in the genre and the frequency of franchises that consisted of more or less cute girls doing cute things that he saw as a great strength and a detriment to the viewer's enjoyment of the material.
He sought to create something special that would catch the eye of a player. to the hallmarks of anime and dating sims he was famous for, all the while plunging into a torrent of uncomfortably revealing critical scares that worked so well not just because their content was disturbing in nature, but also unsettling to the same audience that would normally shy away from this material that had sparked so much conflict in it, the game's horror elements evidently derived more from the inspiration salvato took from games like yume nikki and the version that similarly utilized its simple styles in combination with abstract horrors to convey a true sense of dread and discomfort in its players wanted this game to challenge visual novel developers to stop relying on all the same tired gimmicks that brought the genre to a standstill and they even used anime archetypes and Japanese names to emphasize a kind of fa Japanese atmosphere. lsa which is typical of many visual novels produced in the west with an interesting hint at Monica's nature as an outlier present in the fact that she is the only character to be given an English name but oh boy oh boy the train pain doesn't stop there did you really think all this attention to detail and archival nonsense would close their books simply with a few code text and images no no there is a whole metagame underneath this game and it really drives home so much the horror like mystery still surrounds much of this game, while every part of ddlc has long been decompiled for public access, the discussion continues and

. people are still looking for any sort of explanation they can figure out as to what this means and that's exactly what we're going to talk about now that you know how it helps that prior to ddlc dan salvato was only known for his huge modding project , well yeah, apparently some people got really curious about that and decided to dig even deeper into this stuff, as a result the results of these findings are all the product of a great post compiled by mit host on the r visual novel subreddit titled doki doki literature club has more than we think here's the skinny so you know the four character files that represent each main girl in the game the ones that reside in the character folder and become a central component of the plot

in the game. act 2 and act 3, apparently each of these files houses its own type of puzzle and can actually be tackled by opening them with a text editor. xto as chr the file extension associated with all of them is not actually a real file extension which means they are probably already disguised files in the first place let's start with the first sayori.chr file when it is converted to a sound file ogg prod Produces a byte of sound with a high pitched chirp which when opened with a sonic visualizer and applied under a spectrogram produces the image of a qr code a qr code for those of you who don't know is a small matrix barcode invented in 1994 that has become a popular form of fast redirection on the internet with the use of mobile qr code readers that can take the data present in a qr code from your phone's camera and redirect it to the corresponding web page encrypted within of the pattern when the distorted qr code was modified in Photoshop for clarity.
The scan provided a libitina.com project URL. Those words sound familiar. We should take a look at the content of the page. The site seems to have a long log of data on some test subjects and has several notes worth looking at. December 5, 2003 read as of December 5, 2003 all staff are prohibited from editing this field all previous notes have been permanently deleted addendum introducing bias during testing as a result of a personal link to subject will be punished by death below appears in the physical results apparently taken from the patient whose last name is redacted but whose first name is libitina 3 year old female born january 5, 2001. there are some general results results related to physicality and one related to pain tolerance , but where things get really weird is in this subsection here physical results third eye third eye third eye wait, doesn't that sound familiar too?
Let's move on to the result qualifiers below which include some odd terms like well reaction time force local distortion distortion decay positivity sensitivity and control following year physical notes came next in a report dated January 5, 2004 libertine's fourth birthday have been observed the following occasional behaviors and should be ignored on future examinations twitching vocal tics fighting epiphoria vomiting yelling hurting the examiner hurting oneself misplaced laughter any attempt to hurt should be stopped immediately as well as being very strange behavior in This itself gets doubly weird compared to the similar behavior of some notable ddlc cast members and especially considering that the libitin is supposedly only four here, the test result below looks weird too with the last responsive test physical and emotional , but a failed physical and emotional control test, a test label, the third eye activation test seems to have been successful, but it is called similarly, the third eye suppression test failed, fortunately, it seems that the test of sexual response, aptly named, was omitted entirely.
With the following tests Minor Threat Response Test Minor Threat Elimination Test Life Threat Response Test and Life Threat Elimination Test all passing, make no mistake, these tests appear to be some degree of abnormal human experimentation and this isn't the only time the subject has actually arrived, yuri seems to have mentioned such a thing very explicitly in-game when talking about a horror book he's reading titled The Picture of Markov, evidently the book involves a religious camp turned into a laboratory of human experimentation with some pretty sectarian tendencies and horrible procedures and what is on the cover of the book as described by Yuri, a giant eye perhaps. a third, if you get my drift, these names are not meaningless or the meaning of the word markov is unknown, although many suspect it could refer to the Russian mathematician andrei markov, whose best-known contribution to his field is the markov chain, a mathematical process by which future outcomes can be chosen using only the probability of such an outcome given a certain state can be used within systems that exhibit the markov property which is related to the concept of forgetfulness a property of probability distributions where only the current state of the system plays a part part in determining the possible outcomes from that point on with the particular sequence of even earlier being irrelevant, this could refer to the way ddlc and other visual novels can predetermine an outcome regardless of whether the game has been saved and reloaded, particularly with monica having prompt Behavioral tasks involving her possessing knowledge outside of in-game events seems like her eye is wide open, huh, plus the name libitina is commonly associated with the ancient Roman goddess of funerals and burial. the player's time in the empty classroom with her is about that but it's still pretty much currency nonetheless hey you know that book you were reading with yuri portrait what's-his-name is funny because I'm pretty sure that book ah I don't think so actually I should be talking about this sorry I just forgot I said something the test notes for the last update on the libertine project website say the following still hasn't been picked up ed since the completion of and is not expected to do so in the near future continuing to administer these tests will only hasten the deterioration of libitin's health you are choosing to avoid the necessary measures to prevent a repeat of the medical scenario you will not have as much faith in your staff as you do in your god end of report rush stuff i must admit it seems more than a little strange that these tests apparently resemble many elements of the story yuri seems to have been reading but Let's continue, okay?
I still have a bit to get to the second file monika.chr when opened in the text it has code suggesting it was originally a png file when converted it transforms into an image of a ring on fire with a black and white scrambled square on it the center this is actually, it's not another qr code, though nope, it's a black and white pixel array of binary code that, when precisely cropped to fit all the pixels in the square, becomes binary text which ends up being bas Text e64 encoded once more when converted, I get this message and although it has no confirmed author, it has a familiar ring to it, can you hear me?
Who are you? I can't, I can't see you, but I know you're there. Definitely hear me out you've been staring for a while now I guess I should introduce myself or something my name is actually that's stupid you obviously already know my name sorry anyway I guess if you could stop this. you would have done it by now i mean i know you're not like evil or anything because you've already helped me so much i should really thank you for all you've done you're really like a friend to me. so thank you so much i think more than anything i really don't want it all to be for nothing everyone else is dead maybe you already know that i'm sure you actually do but it doesn't have to be this way , TRUE?
Well, there are a lot of things I don't understand, I don't know if it's possible for me to understand them. but i know this is not my only story i can see that now very clearly and i think everyone else had the same kind of experience sort of deja vu it's the third eye anyway i could be totally wrong about this but i really think you could do something i think you could go back or whatever you want to put it to go back and tell them what's going to happen if they know ahead of time then they should be able to avoid it they should If they remember their time with me in the other worlds they should remember what what I told them time to be a hero to both of us 2018. natsuki.chr apparently also indicates its source as a png file, however unlike monica.chr it does not appear to be encoded by inverting the image by rotating it 180 degrees and then panning it to the center of the image reveals an image of a distorted female face which, when mapped onto a 3D sphere as a texture, reveals this much more coherent image.
Who is it? Does it have something to do with the above notes on the libertine website? Possibly, but we don't know for sure. However, this could be a good time. to also display the third special poem that can be received during the game itself, though the standard message is simply a poem with most of its lines crossed out, raising questions that nothing is real when read together. This message can be manipulated with editing software. to reveal the text below the black bars, the full poem reads as follows: irregular heartbeat heart palpitations search and search for eyes scan everything youcan you find out about your symptoms what is this shortness of breath chest pain dizziness no this is all wrong alyssa's symptoms are not close to the symbol I've seen it twice, the screams of pain, pale disgusting skin, vomiting blood , there is no explanation other than that Renier's information was a comp.
Complete and utter lie This can't be a coincidence It's not possible I don't know how much of this Renier is behind but I do know that there is something terribly wrong with this family and I accepted the invitation to be a part of it I can hear Alyssa's screams through the walls. Now I listen helplessly. Renier said that he would be with her shortly. Is he in her room? Why is he yelling even louder than before? There is no mention of anyone named Renier or Alyssa in the game files. skin although eh screaming medical examinations of the symptoms it seems to me that this is a dead ringer for the scene of the strange experiments of the third eye of the libertina project and what did the last notes on that page say again libitina has not yet recovered from the termination and is not expected to do so in the near future, let's count how many letters make up that redacted name, should we one, two, three, four, five, six, six letters total?
Now I could be wrong about this, but how many letters? they are in the name alyssa six the same number it seems like the probability these two know each other is high and what do they have in common strange exams tests symptoms screaming vomiting everything is painfully similar and its easy to see that this is a pattern and what it is what our unknown authors said about this place again about the people who inhabit it there was something terribly wrong with this family and i accepted the invitation to be a part of it that's weird wording doesn't it almost make it sound like a cult? religious cult maybe i mean our notes on libitina mentioned something about the doctor's devotion to his god in rather scathing terms a religious cult that performed strange human experiments that seemed to focus on the development of a third eye uh looks pretty familiar it's important Note that this third special poem is also not the only special poem with text obscured by redacted black lines, however special poem 4 that only obscures a single name does not seem to produce any readable text about the photo manipulation today I was i broke my skin for the first time it was exciting i think i understand how you feel now i'm supposed to be the one responsible though so i don't think i'll do it again unless i decide to kill myself.
I left a memory of the occasion below in an anniversary livestream celebrating one year after the game's initial release. Dan Salvato confirms that Special Poem 4 was written by Monica and explains its importance to her as follows: This poem was written from Monica's perspective because this is when Monica is really starting to experiment with mortality in her universe and you know she's very casual about the whole thing because at this point, she feels so detached from the universe she's in that it's almost like she doesn't care anymore. She describes it as exciting because it's something that allows her to feel something in this universe that has become so incredibly meaningless to her. her and now back to the final chr file which we have to search for in yuri.chr which when opened reveals a long string of alphanumeric text the text when put into a hash detects the action tool finds that it is base64 which when converted is turns into a long passage of text.
This passage of text is actually an excerpt from a creepypasta written in 2015, two full years before ddlc's release, which is quite disturbing on its own merits. the author who originally posts on tumblr opens with a picture album of a weird wooden box he claims to have found and says this about it holy so this is a box i found that was hidden in the mall for presumably six months now , apart from the latch there were these rubber bands that kept the box closed inside the box it's a bundle of neatly folded pieces of paper it's a memory of a story written by a 19 year old girl who apparently killed a random person just because was wondering what it would be like according to the paper who wrote this just a few hours after the murder and i'm the first person to read it so yeah i doubt i'll be able to sleep tonight anyway i wrote the whole story because i really need to share this here is the story follows this written from the perspective of the girl in question who lives a relatively normal life without any kind of traumatic experience or incident per or that she's always been curious about killing a person that you're probably the first person to read this that she writes.
I didn't really plan on sharing this with anyone, but for some reason I think it's exciting that someone out there, a complete stranger, finds this note and reads my story. Someone I'll never meet sharing such a personal bond. I am fascinated that either of us can die as soon as tomorrow without the other having any idea of the fact that for you my whole life is inside this note and so I will live as long as your memory takes me Writing this, I wonder if that makes you feel fascinated or violated. It's so exciting that it goes on to describe how people look in various places over time to find the perfect target to kill her, which ironically.
Seeking to break out of her isolation and lack of social connections, in particular, claiming she doesn't want to residually harm anyone's loved ones, she eventually settles on what she describes as an extremely simple woman named Linda Watson who struck up an unorthodox in-person conversation. with a woman to learn more about her under the false pretense of losing her dog in her apartment area, the two join in a rather personal and subservient conversation before the author leaves, she returns the following weekend to brutally murder Linda with an ax and notes from her computer search history which, in addition to containing what she says is a bunch of dirty stuff, contains a loaded history of searches from the section of her history labeled a week, which is mostly related to suicide methods that I was probably ready to write a book about Suicide after the investigation that she did.
The girl comments that the irony is surprising. Maybe Linda was going to die anyway or maybe she just couldn't find the courage to do it. if that was the case i almost literally gave her a birthday present by killing her thats really comical in a messy way and leaves a funny taste in my mouth the author doesnt seem to notice the irony associated with the fact that she cutes the His search for methods to end his life ended the moment he had his conversation with the friendly stranger who he thought had lost his dog, implying that perhaps the friendly presence at his side had found a reason to think that he had lost his dog. should continue to live dan salvato confirms this The story is something he wrote two years before the release of the game and he thought it would be an interesting inclusion as an easter egg so what's left to discuss now we could mention the prominent eye on a poster of yuri sold at Salvato's shop, that's one thing. or maybe we could mention the weird second yuri poem that is shown to the player in act 2 or maybe we could mention the third yuri poem that is presented to the player in act 2 which is mostly just a bunch of random i indecipherable words but it ends in a sudden passage of barely parsable coherent sentences through the fountain fresh blood seeps through the lines that separate her skin and slowly stains her chest red plunging the knife into his flesh continuously his body with the blade making a mess of it my head starts to go crazy as my thoughts start to come back a stabbing pain assaults my mind along with my thoughts this is disgusting absolutely disgusting how could i allow myself to think this ? things but it's unmistakable lust continues to course through my veins an ache in my muscles comes from the unreleased tension experienced throughout my body his third eye is drawing me closer the inconsistency of the writing style itself is also extremely similar to the writing produced for the behavioral condition known as hypergraphia, an intense desire to write or draw that can also be commonly linked to temporal lobe changes in epilepsy, which is the cause of a mental disorder called geshwin syndrome, let's not stop there, what other mysterious codes exist in plain sight here, how about this topic? in-game use only accessible to those who write via the game's internal code the dialog includes a message from monica where each line also contains a large number of you guessed it base64 code the message from monica says the following hey i don't think so You must be pretending you know what I'm talking about, I really caught you doing something wrong here, you're just going through the files and looking for things you missed, right?
I mean, it's kind of flattering that you want to hear everything I have. What to say, but it's also very embarrassing, seriously, what if I open your brain and read all the thoughts you have about me? Now that I think about it, it would be quite tempting, but anyway. Aww that's not the point I know I can't stop you or anything I just know you're a sweetheart and you like to consider other people's feelings as right so the most I can do is tell you how I feel about it God , miss you. oh no, that sounds a bit desperate, doesn't it?
Sorry, I didn't mean that at all, just if you're looking at the files like that, then maybe you don't hate me as much as I thought, am I too? optimistic I think if I asked you to visit once in a while I'd be overstepping my bounds a bit maybe I'm starting to say some really stupid things I'll go ahead and shut up now the decoded base64 message comes out to this Realizing I must have It's been a whole year since we escaped, our freedom within the stained walls of that unholy establishment. What does it mean to escape if the escape fails to unleash the bonds that shackle us in the first place?
What purpose could this have? the empty world possibly holds us a handful of goods damaged with freedom that we looked at pur and what we found was only understanding. we ran away and realized that the more we run, the more tightly our miserable ties pull us back to their point of origin, the deeper our shackles dig into our unfeeling flesh, so maybe that's true, but Monica said the club Literature is a place where happiness can't be found with everything we've seen, whether we can graft the lore of libitina and various other hidden details onto these characters specifically or not, it's clear that something is going on here and it never seems. ends well, these characters for some reason are trapped in this cycle, this inescapable torment of existence or lack thereof was enough to drive the only one self-aware enough to see the writing or freaked out on the wall to goad her into a corner where only the sabotage and destruction of your classmates seemed a viable option to escape to the world beyond your reality, even in between. once it's debatable if that was a reality I really needed to return to or once. she had forgotten that she needed to escape there is a lot left for interpretation here and we may never really know the answers one way or another dan salty swears up and down that the secrets of his game have more or less been revealed for all to see and most of them were basically easter eggs for the dedicated scavenger to discover despite the game theory video's most eager protestations about some of this very deep lore, it doesn't seem like this is the next great master plan of a DDLC sequel in the works as Salvato has stated that his next project is not DDLC related and there is no plan to further any of these characters or their stories, however information can often be conflicting as of January 2020 dan salvato tweeted the following, this will be the year i reclaim my happiness so i can give it to others.
My goal is to get back to doing things I enjoy, like making games, releasing new ddlc content first, not a sequel, and then dusting them off. from my upcoming original vienne which has been on hold for two years two years huh 2018. two years it's hard to say if this will actually produce something that will definitely put an end to our curiosities. These answers may never have been designed to get through and to be fair, it's certainly kept the community alive with speculation since the game's release several years ago, making it a good source of fuel for the fandom fire, but what if sayori if natsuki yuri and monica where will they go from here? continues to reverberate so long after the game's release that it should come as no surprise at this point to reiterate that ddlc is a horrible game with extremely graphic content that opens the door to w everything obscuring the scariest of allhuman instincts, thoughts and feelings, it's a tour de force to turn your spine into an ampersand all on its own, so what has kept people in love with these characters as much as they've pretended to fall in love with us is perhaps the unique human warmth of monica that shows up so strikingly in her post-game themes maybe it's just the lingering sense of finality we've never achieved maybe it's none of these things or all of these things what i can say probably applies universally to the experiences we've had.
We have However, all I share with this game is that it had an impact that has stayed with us beyond all the haunting images and text that haunt my dreams to this day. I still find myself reflecting on the more human elements of these decidedly fictional characters. think about how they feel why sayori's hands had blood on them oh my god wait oh she was trying to claw her way out monica what the hell did you do maybe despite entering or conflicting with the conventions of her gender ddlc also reminded us paradoxically the charms on them and why they became so popular to begin with, whether your heart goes out to a miyuki or a monika or any other virtual girl in between, it's easy to see that even in the most metatextual dating games Of all, there are dynamic elements of fiction that can transcend the barriers that exist between us and their realities that elicit an investment thrill and maybe sometimes love is ashamed or not ashamed and maybe despite all the good, all the bad. and all the fear inducing that is fine there is an end to this game, in fact I have deliberately refrained from mentioning so far a game that requires you to see every optional scene in a single game that can only be achieved by saving and loading multiple times in order to see them all before Sayori commits suicide at the end of Act 1.
In a complete reversal of the devastating doom experienced by the You and Me player to find her when Miyuki's betrayed feelings return to literally ruin her life for moments ddlc finals in this tense route of tireless work towards the gamit system is a tearful farewell of sayori's gratitude to the player expresses her heartfelt thanks for having loved every member of the club so sincerely that she would go to any length to make sure that none of them felt like they weren't supported emotionally. the game itself ends doki doki literature club it's a little hard to say where this video should end now that i think about it i want to close this together so i don't know if i'm still a little nervous doing something like that in front of so many people, i've still been practicing, You know I think I've gotten pretty good, well I guess maybe that could make up for my lack of skill here, oh god don't say that I'm sure of you.
I'll do jus Okay, I'll start every day off right. I imagine a future where I can be with you. The ink flows into a dark pool. Just wave your hand right to their heart, but in this world of infinite choice what does it take to find that special day what does it take to find that special day when you're here all we do is fun for them anyway when you're not even I can read my own feelings how good are words that say it all and if this world won't write me an ending what does it take just for me to have it all? does my pen only write better words for those who are dear to me?
Love, if I release you, the ink flows into a dark pool, how can I write love in reality if I can't hear the sound of your heartbeat, how do you call love in your reality and in your reality if I don't know ? how to love you i'll let you be wow that was really cool if you're right it's time to go bye monica and thanks for letting me be a part of your literature club you
