Does Air-Box Lid Removal Actually Work??? | 2020 Shelby GT500 Mustang | VMP Project Snowbird

Feb 27, 2020
Hey guys, it's Syd with SPT performance calm and as we promised you earlier in a week we have this new

2020

gt500

that VMP performance has been playing with, it has the Joker port fan and some soft tweaks but no much more. As we promised before, I know you guys saw the ridiculous gains we were making just by removing the airbox cover from the dyno. You know we're getting 50 to 60 horsepower out of this thing. It was crazy to just take off this little plastic cover and Of course, we were doing that on the dyno with the hood up, when we closed the hood we were losing some power, so what better way to test it than to take it to the track Drag and drop it cover by cover to see if there really are any performance advantages or disadvantages running it one way or another.

I have a kind of theory. I think it'll

actually

work

better with the lid on, but we'll see, so we've done a few different runs throughout the day and now it's time to remove the airbox lid, so obviously we already have it unscrewed. You guys saw that we made some pretty ridiculous gains with this thing off on the dyno, so as we mentioned before, it was hood close to the hood, gains in a way. disappeared so now we are going to test it on the track and obviously we are not going to try it on the track with the hood up so it will be closed but my theory is that having the hood off can hurt the performance on the track and that will be because if we put this lid back on here it seals pretty well, you'll see that Ford puts a little bit of foam in here and the ring here sits like a groove that forms a pretty decent seal around this thing and The reason I think which is pretty well sealed is because Ford spent a lot of time and money here on the front of this car putting this nice little scoop on it and if you look at the back of this thing you can see the filter and this thing is pretty big, I mean , you can see it takes up that entire corner of the grill, so basically what we have here is a factory built in ram air intake and I have a feeling that the ram air effect goes into this filter.

More Interesting Facts About,

The box has to be closed, otherwise the air that comes in down here is just going to go all over the engine compartment and not be used properly with the cover on. I feel like we're going to force cold air into this box at high speed. because you know the wisks are running over 130 miles per hour so a lot of air is pushed into this air box, there's only one way to find out, take the lid off, close the hood, let's hit the track and let's see what it

does

, as you can see. With the sun going down, we're getting ready to run with the airbox lid at home, which really gives you every advantage possible with this setup because it's down probably seven or eight degrees.

Nice little breeze, not too bad, probably 82 earlier today. 74 so now it's a good night so if this runs significantly faster we'll know that the games we were seeing on the benchmark

actually

play out in real life it runs at the same speed or slower we'll probably just want Leave the air box cover on for now. playing with the pulleys, you know, this thing has a quarter fan, we have a Porter fan from Jokers plus a 100 and 100 plus millimeter throttle body, but at the end of the day just a 93 octane tune, a pretty tune up gentle. This car is not very aggressive at all and of course there is no transmission tuning at this time.

I can't even register what's happening in the transmission, so we've found that raising the rev limiter and then shifting manually has been best. The top is super clean, he runs ten eight, 131 miles per hour, that's the fastest time he's run all day, but how much of that was air temperature? You think you know it's 60 feet slower and based on previous experience it's hot air sucked in from the air. engine bay at launch yeah so I'd say that while the airbox cover shows big power gains on the dyno it's not as good on the track yeah not a world comparison real, it's not really a real world modification that you would want to do at least at this power level, yeah we had power, that's what I was thinking, you know, if we threw a pulley at it and started generating 20 pounds of boost where that fan port should really start to glow at that point, maybe Rams choosing the blades

does

n't really matter.
Of course, a lot of it is not given by ear, it could be more of a restriction benefit, but so far it seems like it likes to draw that cool outside air in and not suck the heat under the hood. Aryan cord did a good job with the cold air from the factory of him, so that's That's the challenge that has been posed and the secondary markets will have to rise to meet it. If they're going to update that part, we just have to find a filter, put it in and see what it does with just one filter, I mean.
The paper filters may be a bit of a restriction on picking something up there, and I think the gt350 filter will fit that airbox too well, maybe that's something else we can try later, something that's for sure. It definitely doesn't make 50 more horsepower, not in the real world, so we'll have to be careful what the guys say about the cold air it's generating on the dyno, especially when doing dyno racing. because we've shown that you can generate a ridiculous number if you want to do enough, that's basically it, but in the real world it doesn't translate into real performance, yes, definitely, so now, just in the interest of being thorough, we'll put the airbox back in there right after the race, I mean this is still pretty hot, put the airbox cover back in there and we'll cool the car down.
I'm running back in this a little bit to get air, I mean, maybe one eight degrees a little bit, but this run, this run with the lid, it all lost a little bit in the 60-foot time, which wasn't any faster , he was running basically at the same time and sped up maybe a mile, yeah, and that could very easily be attributed to the spanking a little later in a day, yeah, so let's let this slide again and now it's an air a little bit colder so I've had about 20 minutes of cool down since the last run with the airbox lid removed, both airbox lids are back to about the same temps as during that last run and we'll see what This time ago, the only thing that changed was that a parameter was found in the tune that allows you to use launch control with traction control disabled, so we'll try it.
That is the question. Tuning these cars is basically in its infancy, many parameters aren't even defined in the tuning software yet and we don't have any access to the transmission control module, so we're really just testing things here, so that It's a setup that I've changed between the two races just to see what it does, other than the spark fuel, everything else is the same except that setup change and putting the airbox cover back on, so last time The car ran a 1087 at a hundred and fifty. thirty-one miles per hour with the air box cover closed, so putting it back on, let's see what it does.
By the way, we lost 60 feet of time last time with the airbox cover off, which is a classic 1084 130 point eight sign. Next we head. Back to the dyno and it's all a prototype cold air intake from JLT Performance.
