Do You Know who You Are?

May 01, 2020
You attended, you attended seminars and you said your reason was to learn more about yourself. Yes. My experience has been that people attend seminars, especially self-development seminars, to seek the answer. They want to

know

what I can learn to be more successful. Wasn't that your motivation? No, no, strange as it may seem. And I think you're probably right. I think that's what most people are looking for. I think they are looking for an answer outside of themselves and will never find it. I think at that moment I realized there was something in me. I met a man here in Toronto.
do you know who you are
He was the one who originally got me involved in studying this, Ray Stanford. And he told me that if I didn't like the results he was getting in my life, that he was going to have to change me because those were my results. And he said, if you're going to change, you're going to have to discover something about yourself. And that seemed to make sense. I don't think it was a transcendental idea. It wouldn't give anyone a brain herniation, but it made a lot of sense to me. So I started studying myself. I discovered that most people don't

know

who they are.
do you know who you are

More Interesting Facts About,

do you know who you are...

They really don't. What do you mean? I mean, I know my name, I know my age, I know where I live. What else is there... - Yes, although that's not you. It's just that. -I know what size (he murmurs). If you ask the average person who they are, they will give you their name. They'll say I'm Bob Proctor, but I'm not. Bob and Proctor are two words. My parents gave them to me. They are called nicknames but it's not me, it's my name. Then someone will say well this is me, but this is not me either, it is my body.
do you know who you are
Like you would never call the studio and say, "The body won't be in today, it's sick." (laughing) Okay. You know we don't say I'm a hand or I'm a leg. We say my hand, my leg, my body, my name. Who I am? Well, that's an interesting question. And I believe that if a person starts studying that and looks for the answer, he will find it. Look, I think we live simultaneously on three planes of understanding. We are spiritual creatures, we have intellect and we live in physical bodies. Well. But, because we lack awareness or understanding of who we are, we are totally locked into a physical world and let external things control us. 95% of the population reacts to a life they don't actually live at all.
do you know who you are
Okay, and would you call that one of the barriers to success? Oh, there's no doubt about it. I think there are two barriers. Success is a funny word. Nightingale had a great definition for it. He said: "A person is successful if he knows where he is and where he is going, and he moves progressively in that direction." He said that success was "the progressive realization" of a worthy ideal. Anyone who has a goal and moves towards it will be successful. Most people think that you are successful if you have a lot of money. Very often you have a lot of money if you are successful, but you are not.
I wouldn't say Mother Teresa has a lot of money, you know? But she is a pretty successful woman. So, it's... So, that barrier to success is reacting... - Well, there are a couple of them. - Well. I think there are two barriers. One is our conditioning, the conditioning that takes place in our subconscious mind since we are babies. The only thing we can do is act and talk like the people around us. That's why we learn the language we learn. If 10 languages were spoken in our house, we would learn 10 languages without any problem. There's usually one and that's the only one we learn and we get older and think, oh, I couldn't learn another language.
We could learn 100 if we wanted. You can do everything. But I think we are conditioned. We have really strong conditioning, usually with some not very good ideas. And that is the barrier that is within us. What is outside of us is our environment. We have a tendency to act like everyone around us. And if you think about it, it doesn't make much sense. Because if you study statistics, 95% of people live their entire lives and never live how they want to live. Did you know that 95% of the population of this country, let's say North America? Well. The richest continent in the history of the world.
They all work productively, say for 40 of their 65 years. Well. And they all end up with hardly any money. Well, something must be wrong. So, there's not much: about 5% of people end up financially comfortable or independent. Are you trying to bring us down, Bob? Because that's... No, I actually think it's a pretty exciting idea because you see the idea behind it is that anyone can win, anyone. But, if we start studying these statistics, I think we will come to the conclusion: geez, I better start thinking for myself instead of following everyone. Most people get a job, look around, see how others do their jobs, and start doing it the same way.
They should stop and think: I wonder if any of these people know what she's doing. You know, is there a better way to do it? But don't we have the need to fit in? I mean, we don't want to stand out, we don't want to get fired, we don't want to make a splash. Exactly, exactly, just settle in, you know, take a number, be like everyone else around you. You know, that would be cool in the animal kingdom, but humans aren't supposed to live that way. I think we should make some waves. Maybe we should stand out, be different.
Not because it is different. Well. But because we are different. We all have different thoughts and I think we should start thinking and building images in our minds of what we would like to do and then set out and do it. Okay, let me... Emerson did that, Edison did that, Marconi did that, Samuel Morris did that. Minister Buckfuler did that. We could go on and on and on and on. Well. They were different, they stood out, they caused a sensation. Well, you started with what you say, you started with a search for yourself, to try to find more about yourself.
And you had some success along the way. Well, I didn't start out like that at first. I started out wanting to make a lot of money. I thought that if I had enough money it would solve all my problems. I found out that wasn't true. I made a fair amount of trouble or money and seemed to have more trouble. But I, after working on this for a few years, decided that the real answer is to know yourself a little better. Well. And I don't think you have to go to the Himalayas and become a guru to do that.
Well, what did you do to learn about yourself? You said you attended as many seminars as you could. I attended seminars. I went and listened to different speakers teaching something about the mind. I think the answer is in our minds. If we all start studying and trying to understand our minds. Okay, let me get back to you if I can. What did you learn about Bob Proctor during that study? Well, I learned that most of me you will never see. He is not physical. And what you see here in the physical body is nothing more than the physical manifestation of the higher side of my personality.
And of course, that's true with you and Nancy who's on camera. It is true for everyone. And I think what we have to study is how does this non-physical part of my mind work? What happens when I think? Where do thoughts come from? How was this chair built? Someone had to think. Thoughts are everywhere. And we attract thoughts to our mind and build pictures or images in our mind. Well. What we want to understand is that it is a non-physical side of us that does that. If I can build an image of something in my mind, I am very capable of building a physical replica of it in my world.
So if I build an image of myself as a happy and relaxed person, I can live like that. If I build an image of myself as prosperous, I can become prosperous. So if we think rich, we will be rich. Absolutely. We are already rich, we just lack money. (Both men laugh) Well, those of us who like to acquire more money and/or happiness or whatever we see as success, those of us who want to achieve the goals we have set for ourselves, do it first. .. Well, the first thing you do is sit down and decide what you want.
If what you want is money, how much money? A lot of money. Well, no one knows how much it is. So, you have to be specific. Well. You write on a card exactly what you want. And he carries that card with him and reads it frequently. This is what I learned in this book Think and Grow Rich and it is what I teach in seminars. I will teach people how to set goals. But you decide exactly what you want. And then you start thinking. Now thoughts will come to your mind about why you can't get it.
You have the ability in your conscious mind to reject that idea, to get it out of your mind. Thinking about why you can't do something will never do you any good. And keep thinking until you start thinking about how you can do it. And you will be shown the way. It comes in the form of images in our mind. Think about how you can and not why you can't. Okay, so our first step is to set some goals. - That is the first step. Think about how we can achieve those goals. Exactly. And just think about how you can do it.
Now, I would say that before even getting into that, you should get a good book and start studying it. Select a person who is already doing something you would like to do, get to know that person. Go to the experts for advice. Don't ask the person next to you, your mother, your father, your brother or the boy who works next to you. Because they don't necessarily know. There is no point in asking a person how to make a lot of money if he only makes $10,000 a year. They don't know it. If they knew, they would probably be making a lot of money.
I think that's fair. It's like not going to the doctor if you are sick if you want to recover. Well. So, you find someone you can go to for advice, you get a really good book, you look at that book, and you start studying it. I have this one that looks like a bible, you know? But this is Napoleon Hill's book, Think and Grow Rich. I've been reading this for 23 years. I'll probably read it for another 23 years. I received another good book that I brought here today. It's called The Power of Your Subconscious Mind. I do not receive any commission for selling this.
The author is already dead. He's been away for a couple of years, but Dr. Joseph Murphy wrote this book, The Power of Your Subconscious Mind. And that's probably one of the best books you'll ever find because you'll learn something about your mind when you read it. Well. Now I read a lot of books. I probably have 1,000 books in my home library, but the one I carry around, take everywhere, and read all the time is Think and Grow Rich. I never stop reading it. What value does it have for you to read that again, read it again?
I mean, you should know it well enough to... I think you could probably recite it word for word. But the secret is that I once read in a book that said: when you read a good book for the second time, you don't see anything in it that you haven't seen before. You see something in yourself that wasn't there before. You see, when I read this, I create a greater awareness. Let me read you one line here, two lines. Well. Hill said: "The missing link in every educational system known to civilization today can be found in the failure of educational institutions to teach students how to organize and use knowledge once acquired." He went on to say that "we must understand the true meaning of the word educated." It won't be a brick and mortar building for 25 years.
That is collecting information. You will probably develop your memory, but I would wonder how well you develop your mind. And I am not against education because I encourage my children to go to school as we know it. Now, he said, "The word education comes from the word "educo," and he says, "it is derived" from the Latin word educo which means to induce, draw out, or develop from within. An educated person is not necessarily "Someone who has an abundance of general or specialized knowledge. An educated person who has the powers of his mind so developed that he can acquire anything he wants or its equivalent without violating the rights of others.
An educated person is one who knows how to go and get what he wants from life. Without being selfish. Oh, in a sense, a researcher, someone who knows what he is looking for and knows how to find it. I think we should always engage in research because learning is a lifelong process. You never stop learning. Educating means come from within. We are tapping into an infinite source. We have deep reserves of talent and ability within us. We can learn to do anything. We have phenomenal powers. If we used our body like we use our mind, we would probably just move our little finger.
Okay , we don't exercise our minds enough. Oh no no. But we aren't taught to do it. Children in school should be taught to sit before the school year starts. They should be given a blank report card and asked to visualize the grades they want to earn and write their own report card. This is before school starts, the first week of school. And then the teacher should say, "Now I want you to focus on how to get that grade and I don't want you to think about why you can't. And I want you to form the attitude that you can't." We'll get it." Now some people say that's not beingrealistic.
That's being very realistic. That is following the principles of success that go back 6,000 years in recorded history. This is how everything was achieved. And isn't that engaging in fantasy thinking? In illusions? - Hell, no. When daydreaming we talk about. No no. Well, that's where all the greatness comes from. Greatness comes from fantasy. I imagine that when Edison first saw the light bulb he was fantasizing. But he kept fantasizing and turned it into a theory and then turned it into a picture and then turned it into a fact. I mean, when he was a kid, it was a fantasy to think about going to the moon.
We've been up there with cars, playing golf. Well, you mentioned in terms of attitude and success principles, this attitude thing. Attitude, attitude, involves the way you think, the way you feel and the way you act. I would find it difficult to explain the attitude properly in conversation alone. I use a table in the seminar. And well, last night I did an attitude seminar. We spent three hours dealing with that topic, you know, so to do it here in three minutes, I haven't done it, I can do it, I haven't learned how yet, let's put it that way.
Okay, I admit it's difficult because we talked... But you have to have a winning attitude, Tom. Well, in human relations we talk about the most difficult thing when managing people, the most difficult thing to deal with is their attitude. That's how it is. That it is almost impossible to change another person's opinion... That is the only thing that makes management fail. We cannot change people's attitudes. Well, no one can change another person's attitude and the only attitude we can change is our own. But, you see, if management has the idea that it's their attitude and we can't do anything about it, then they won't do anything about it.
But, if management comes to the conclusion, yes, it is attitude and let's teach people something about attitude. Let's teach them something about themselves. Let's make them realize that they are worth something, that they are valuable, that they are the greatest resource we have. Companies spend about 65% of every dollar they bring in goes toward employees, salaries and benefits. And yet, management knows less about employees than anything else. They know more about gadgets and gadgets than they do about people. Okay, so you're suggesting that we develop a winning attitude. Absolutely. Can you define that for me first? What is a winning attitude?
Well, if we could just figure it out, let me digress for a second. The entire universe operates according to laws and there is a law of opposites. It's called the law of polarity. Everything has its opposite. There is a right side and a left side. There is a front and a back, an up and a down, a hot and a cold, positive and negative, yin, yang, you know. Well, you can think negative or positive, but you can't think both at the same time. You're only going to think one way at a time. And we have to train our mind to think or look for the positive or good in things.
There is something good in everything. There is no good. The car broke down on the way to the station. There is something good in it. Now, you may have to search to find out what it is. Well. But there is something good in everything. There has to be a positive and a negative for something to exist. There is a gender law that decrees that science understands it, it is taught in science. Well. Well, once we understand that there is this law of opposites, there are negative thoughts or positive thoughts. As thought energy flows into our mind, we decide what we are going to think.
The person is out of work, he can decide to think that I can't find a job, but he can decide to think that I can. If they think I'm going to find one, then they will start to attract a train of thought towards them to figure out how to find it. You really have to understand how your conscious and subconscious mind works in relation to your body or your physical world to understand attitude. Attitude should be taught as a subject in school before reading, writing, arithmetic or anything else. Because it is a person's attitude that will determine the grades he will get.
Well, maybe part of the attitude or related to the attitude is this self-image thing you talked about. Yeah, well, that would be like if we were talking about success principles and I said you have to have a winning attitude, you have to set a goal. So you have to work on your self-image. Now when we think we build images in our minds, Dr. Maxwell Maltz discovered the concept of self-image as we know it today in 1960 when he was a plastic surgeon. And he realized that he was operating on people, he could remove a, you know, a nasty scar from their face and sometimes he would notice that when he removed the scar, maybe he would do a nose job or something, there would be a a great psychological change in the person.
While they may have been introverted, they began to become very social and extroverted. And he postulated that there must be two images that we have. An external image and we also have an internal self-image. And he began to study this and wrote a magnificent book about it called Psycho-Cybernetics. In Psycho-Cybernetics, psycho is the mind, cybernetics being the science of control and communication. And he goes deeper into this and explains how each of us has a mental image of ourselves and it's called a self-image. Many people do not know much about themselves and therefore do not have a very good image of themselves.
And you will often notice that people will turn away from you, they will not look you in the eyes, they will look down and up. They will never try to do anything of great importance because they don't believe they can do it. They have a bad image of themselves. Well, part of that is because in school they tell us what we don't do well. Here we failed, we had low grades. - That could be part of it. Or you only got 60% or whatever. - Yes Yes. I think IQ testing has been done a disservice in that sense when school is run.
Binet, the Frenchman at the beginning of the century invented the IQ test and then we brought it here from Stanford. And we will test a person's intellect and then we will label them good, bad, intelligent or not, and that is not true. We can change IQ by changing the image we have of ourselves. But yeah, if they tell us we're not very good, "you're just like your dad," you know. "You're a bum, you'll never do well." "You didn't go to school, you can't win." Well. Well, that's all false. We can not do anything. And we should encourage a child.
Give them a pat on the back instead of a kick. Well, what can we as members of our audience do right now? Most of us walk around with some degree of self-image, is that fair to say? We all have a self-image. Well, would you say that most of us have a negative self-image to some extent? Well, let's say that we can all improve our self-image. I don't care how good your image is, you can improve it. Well, how can we improve it? Something concrete, how can we make our self-image more positive? Well, again, you know, you're walking into a full-day seminar.
If I could give you some simple advice about it. If a person sat down and let her body relax, totally relax, and then began to visualize in her mind, she would see herself the way she wants to see herself. Which may require a lot of thought since at first we are not sure. - Well, relax, yeah. I mean how we want to see ourselves. Maybe we don't know how we want to... Relate it to something specific. Someone we admire perhaps? Possibly. Is there any place we would like to meet later? Yes, see how you would like to live your life.
Visualize yourself living it that way. Well. Now understand that that is an image in your mind. When you pick up a book, the book is nothing more than a picture that an author has painted with words. Van Gogh, the great artist, was once asked how he made such beautiful work. He said: "I dream my picture and then I paint my dream." To have the image in your mind and then paint it on the wall or canvas. Well, if we just relaxed and built the image in our mind of how we would like to see ourselves, how we would like to see ourselves acting in life, relating to other people, our social life.
Seeing ourselves in the position we hold or how we do our sales presentations if we're in sales or something like that. And then take that photo and describe it, write it in the present tense. "I'm so happy now that I see myself" and write it down. Many people will laugh at this and say, "That doesn't make any sense." It makes a lot of sense. They can't tell you why that's not the case. I could spend hours telling you why it is that way and I could explain it in such detail that everyone would understand. But write a description of how you would like to see yourself.
Start reading it and reading it and reading it and reading it every day. Take it with you and keep reading it. The one point that all the great teachers throughout history have agreed on, have completely unanimously agreed on: we become what we think. It may be a fantasy at first, it may even seem like a lie to us, but if you read it often enough, you will begin to believe it. And, when William James said, "Believe and your belief will create the fact," you will see how the person's personality changes. I see how the personalities of people in seminars change before my eyes.
And all they do is They're starting to see themselves differently. They are starting to have different thoughts. So do our thoughts control our actions? Oh, no doubt, no, our thoughts control our feelings. - We control... It's okay. Our feelings control our actions. All good, and we control our thoughts. Absolutely. - Or we can control our thoughts. We can control our thoughts, yes. Generally, although one of our difficulties, one of our problems perhaps is that we tend to react to what other people say. us and consequently we have negative thoughts and that affects our feelings and that affects our behavior.
That's right, that's exactly how it is. We read the newspaper, pessimism is approaching. We just accept it. Pessimism does not come. You don't have to come. You know there has always been a depression for some people. I grew up with the idea that everyone went bankrupt in the 30s. They didn't, some made millions. I thought everyone had gone bankrupt. They didn't, some people went into business. There is always depression for some people and there are always good times for others. Let's ask ourselves when we read something in the newspaper, do I want to get emotionally involved in that idea?
If it's a negative idea, I don't want to get emotionally involved with it. I don't read the newspaper that often. I do it, but I don't dwell on it. You don't get emotionally involved when you watch other news. - No, when an idea occurs to you, whether someone else tells it to you or you read it in the newspaper, we must reason with it, ask ourselves, will that idea help me get to where I want to go? If not, reject the idea. Okay, okay, Bob, I appreciate that. Our half hour has passed. It was fast. Very quickly.
Those who are interested in learning more about your philosophy of success and I know you give very specific advice on what they can do to be more successful are welcome to attend your seminars. Of course, tell them to call the office. (soft electric piano music) We hold seminars all the time. Great, okay, I appreciate it. Thank you very much for joining us. A pleasure Tom, glad to be here.
