Do Performance Air Filters REALLY Give You More Power?

Jun 06, 2021
As car enthusiasts we all love

power

and what's better than cheap and easy electric air

filters

often promise this by simply swapping out your stock air filter for a direct replacement as engines are essentially glorified air pumps. . but it's as simple as that to find out and in the spirit of tire reviews I'm going to test two vehicles using nine different configurations of inputs giving us the largest data set I could at least find on the internet to find out if there's

more

to the air means

more

power

the two cars i will be using were opposite ends of the scale the first car i will be using is the tire check e92 m3 this car is a high revving naturally aspirated v8 so getting more power out of this is hard the second car will this is my daily skoda octavia vrs and this may seem like a bit of a boring choice but the ea aaa engine in this is the same engine that comes in the audi s3 golf stars and many other configurations this stock car should have 220 horsepower, but it comes from the factory with up to 300 horsepower, so it should be a

really

interesting example if a pulse motor can get more power out of a mayor. or airflow than a high-revving, high-maintenance v8 as I like the data to be as accurate as I may have come to the dyno developments in North Hertfordshire that make dinosaurs.

What these guys don't know about getting accurate data isn't worth knowing and this dino is a very accurate dino. 30 to make their customers happy all they care about is the right number which to me is a little worrying about the m3 because they never delivered the promised 414 brake horsepower even when new so it will be interesting to find out. what is working now as you can see we have many different types of air

filters

in test to

give

a very wide range of data points for the e9203 we are going to use a stock filter that is about 50lbs.

More Interesting Facts About,

do performance air filters really give you more power...

So your going to go or be using a drop in k n replacement filter which is around £90 so almost double the price now k n doesn't promise any extra power but it flows more than good I think this will probably be what more interesting is this and i'm not going to touch it it's a used canon l filter it came off my last m3 it's done about 30 000 miles and i cleaned it twice per canon instructions so its like i got his car serviced and instead of putting in a new paper filter you are just cleaning your existing filter the fourth setup will be this the beautiful sexy carbon fiber venturi intake system now this is an 800lb system and it finally says on your bench of tests it brings 8 to 12 horsepower back so it should be

really

interesting to see if in my stock car it brings more power but I'm pretty sure it will bring more sexiness and should make a nice noise because the fib carbon ra should rattle and then fifth race in the m3 we're just going to take all the ai r filters and we're just going to run with the empty box to see if no filter can

give

it more power also for the skoda we're going to do more or less same thing but not with the dirty filter we have the stock 20lb filter we have a 40lb drop pipe which is absolutely tiny compared to the stock filter a ram air induction system and again we are going to use The car without any kind of admission, it should be super exciting and fascinating. to see if this gives more power than this and if this makes any difference to this because it's definitely going to flow differently but we're going to get on the dyno and find out this is the e92 m3 from toroview and this car has been nothing but problems since purchase luckily this video sponsor carly helped me get off the ground and saved me time and money multiple times over. kali is a bluetooth integrated diagnostic adapter.

These adapters are very useful for self-diagnosing car faults, which means you don't have to pair the garage. every time your car throws a fault code Carly, however, it is not just a diagnostic tool, it goes a step further and actually allows you to code disabled or hidden functions in your car from your smartphone . One of the common faults on the e92 m3 is that the throttle really fails when these fail the car throws random errors shutting down half of the v8 and limiting throttle on the remaining cylinders this usually means an unusable car in a Expensive trip to dealers however with kali I was able to diagnose all reported faults were related to the throttle actuator clear default codes and gave me full power again until it re-discovered the problem months later it helped me too to diagnose an intermittent misfire was coming from the call pack six which meant he only had to buy one call back at £100 each instead of eight the real part of kali's party is coding new features for your car.
do performance air filters really give you more power
I can use kali to do things like encode seatbelt warning when installing harnesses, enable tv while moving. g for passenger change gauge settings change start stop settings the list is endless kali also has a really neat car history check feature so when you're looking to buy a new car you can plug in the device to check Mileage handling and driving behavior from previous owners This gives you as much information as possible to make sure you're not buying a lemon right now. we are putting the clean air filter on the k n clean out clean in but the paper filter obviously has a lot more filtration area and a little more restrictive so i hope it will flow a little more air give us more power sorry , so after about 24 runs there was essentially no difference nothing we could do would give it more power if it was open airbox no filter open airbox stock filter clean filter k n eventually the only statistical difference was the dirty k n which this is the clean one obviously that did cut power a bit but again not a huge amount this just goes to show how hard it is to get power out of a normally aspirated engine and what a great job bmw has done with the intake system on this so now lets load up the skoda and see if a turbocharged engine will really make any difference ok run one trying to find stock horsepower not my vrs mine had a little problem lemma, I will put the data. on screen so let's see how much power this should make, about two four five not 225 which might respect access to a slightly newer engine.
The thing gives us more power it just doesn't seem necessary for this to be so small and so small I'm sure it lets more air through but the main job of an air filter is to filter the air and that's what I mean looking at. the difference yeah it made some power four horsepower i thought let's do something 2 36 236 so 236 first round which is the most power so far but it looks like the drenched heat from the engine coming in on top of the air filter it made it less consistent so it went down to 231 while the pipe thru was two three four so interesting so there you go does a

performance

air filter give you more

performance

knowing that yes frustratingly as expected nothing could do anything for the e92 m3 that big very strong normally aspirated V8 just wouldn't make any more power than it did with the stock filter the only statistical difference was the dirty k n it reduced the flow at high rpm which makes sense for the loss of power lost around 10 horsepower so if you are thinking of using a k n filter they are good and seemed to make a bit of a difference to the noise but I would make sure that you are aware from cleaning or do what I think I'm going to do to the car and just put a cheap paper filter in every time it needs service finally now it was a bit a little disappointing that this didn't make more power however my car It's completely stock and I don't really know its history so it might not be the healthiest example right now, but in the future it will be as part of the 92m3 build series I'm doing for the tire review channel. , one of the episodes will be power and that is I have a full titanium aquaponic exhaust system and this and then I'll map it out so at that point I'm going to go back and review this and see if a remapped car with a better exhaust system will have an edge between stock so subscribe for that if you're interested in seeing that in the future the skoda well that was the surprise of the day now i don't think it's any surprise that this will flow more air than this you can seeing how restrictive it looks compared to this small amount of foam it was nice to see it was a four horsepower increase every time we did a pull the ram air system was the really interesting one on the skoda side now that it had a six increase brake horsepower on the first run but since I was in a rush to install it I didn't put the heat shield frame on which means on the second run it started sucking in some hot air and dropped five horsepower so that it was just stock that's a really good lesson how more air is good unless it's bad hot air even if it's a lot so think about that while you're doing an induction system don't just put a cone filter like this and then leave it open in the engine bay because pulling hot air is garbage for the engine you just have to do things to make up for that less dense air that's the other reason this inventory goes It is located inside the stock air box because you don't want the hot air from the engine so those are the two lessons from this test dirty is bad don't have a dirty filter hot air is bad if you are installing a kit fancy induction, be sure to seal it. hot air from the engine because you're going to lose power but on a boosty two liter volkswagen group engine more flow meant more power and on the highly sprung e92 v8 you stock it just doesn't bother the elephant in the room filtration now I haven't tested it but I'm pretty sure if I would have tried and if you want to see me try it leave a note in the comment I'm pretty sure this wouldn't leak as much as this or these wouldn't leak as much as these now one of my favorite youtubers it's project farm if you haven't seen his channel i'll leave a link in the description to his air filter filtration test because he did a very good job filtering and i'm going to spoil the end for you it wasn't good for the fabric filters and it was good for paper filters these seem to filter much better than these so the other thing you have to balance is the reduction in filtration worth some extra horsepower but that's it's up to you I hope you enjoyed this test I had a lot of fun doing it it's been a bit stressful and I'm sorry some of the pictures aren't the best it's really hard to film in a dinosaur booth with sound and light but I hope you have been interesting.
As always I'll try to answer everything if you have any questions please subscribe if you want to see what happens to that E93 as it gets its suspension, it changes its brake, it changes its weight, it lowers its power, it goes up every time I make a change. I'm going to test it on the track, I know I've been promising this for a while, but the car has been a bit of a nightmare, I've had to do a lot of work to get it track-ready and now I have summer over, so looks like it will be early 2021 when hopefully the tracks will be a bit more available and life a bit more normal, thanks again to dyno developments for catering to my OCD and letting me run race after race. run after run to get the data as perfect as possible if you're in the market for a dyno give these guys a call because they make the most accurate dinosaurs in the industry and if you want your car tested sign up for the guide phone number of your car, they do dyno tests at a very reasonable price but, as always, it's safe. motorsport and until next time
