DIY Master Bathroom Reno for a FRACTION of What the Pros Cost

Feb 27, 2020
Last June around nine we bought our first house, it was a big step for us, the house was beautiful, however one thing we didn't like very much was the

master

bathroom

, it was boring and there was a problem with water in front of the shower, so I decided to consider renewing it. I contacted several local contractors and all their bids were over $2000, so we decided to try to do it ourselves. Yes, we could. I started by removing the flooring, which ended up being three layers. which the owners had installed over the years, there was a fair amount of water damage in front of the shower because the old shower door didn't have a proper threshold, so I decided to cut out part of the floor;

The project definitely made sense. At first, when I started lifting the floor, I wondered

what

I was getting into. Change your plan. Let's tear out all this rotten wood before we open the floor. I didn't know how bad the water was, but I want to start removing this. The smell is abstractly horrible and there is a lot more water than I thought. I didn't make many mistakes during the demolition of this project the way you are about to see the following pharmacy images, this is like girl yes I didn't know where the main water valve was before I knew it, now I'm wrong oh yeah , that's one way to not rip out a vanity with the broken water pipe out of the way.

Knocking down the dresser was a lot of fun in the end, okay? A few days of testing and some sort of mishap with the vanity and unfortunately I had to call a plumber to come out at a

cost

of $200, but we're all sorted. The problem with the lesson learned is that I've been removing all these different floors, I think we've had three different floors now it still smells a lot in here, so I'm going to tear off this last layer of linoleum to see if there's more mold underneath or something to trying to get rid of this file so the moldy smell basically goes away, which has been quite a battle, now I'm going to seal it with some kill primer just for good measure, so here I am cutting a Hardiebacker board, it's like a elegant Krong, creates cardboard material that is miserable to work with and creates all that amount of dust.

Backer board works similar to drywall and you don't cut it, you just score and tear it. I'll let you help on the floor as a jump to where all this water damage was, you don't have to put it. It is necessary to put a thin under the Hardiebacker board, but I decided to put it in the places where the floor was lower just to help add a little extra layer to get things done as quickly as possible. I ended up using four full sheets of Rd backer board for the

bathroom

. It takes you a long time to take all the measurements, but once it's always cut and falls into place, it's pretty cool to see it all fit together so nicely, that was the final screw, holy cow wall screws, okay, so just wait for everything to dry.

We'll probably give it a few days and then we'll move on to mosaic. I have no experience with mosaics. My dad has no experience with mosaics. But between the two of us we discovered it on the first day. I didn't film almost anything. I just stuck the camera. to the side and did a time lapse, but we got into a good rhythm. I did all the measuring and cutting and my dad did all the tiling. Aaron picked up these pretty floor tiles and decorated his large tiles and they have a gray wood tone giving them a rustic look, the overall feel we are going for when laying the floor is not necessarily difficult it just takes a lot of time as you have to scrub a lot the floor to get all the stuff out and this is probably one of my favorite parts of the project, the carpentry.
I got a new powerful sauce and had a lot of fun with a lot of different camera angles during the process and you can see I started to remove the top, a splash guard on top of the sub. whoever was going to do something a little more modern looking but it didn't come out of the drywall well so I ended up removing all the tile and drywall from the wall, this ended up being a lot trickier than I thought because In most places, the drywall was actually glued to the wall instead of nailed and there were so many studs that it took me forever to get the drywall down on the tile, probably a few hours, at least once I the drywall was installed on the walls, I used tape and joint compound to cover.
In the scenes I found out that installing tiles on the wall is a little more difficult than installing tiles on the floor because on the floor you have gravity working for you, but on the wall it is definitely working against you, everything starts falling and ends up doing a big mess of everything but once you get into the groove it works once you get down the first row it really goes together really well we just had to use these big subway tiles in a subway pattern so the corners that I I would like to see a sharp corner cut on the curved corner I thought it gave it a bit more modern feel.
I can officially say that all my tile work is done on this project, so here I am starting a new phase in the project by putting crown molding in the bathroom. I definitely benefited from having my dad here to help hold one end of the crown molding while I worked to make sure the angles were nice and tight. The fun part is installing the crown molding, the not fun part is all the caulking and painting, sure, dad hat. Oh, since then. I put the white tile backsplash on top of the tub, it really made our tub which was an off-white color in our shower which was also an off-white color look dirty so instead of replacing these items we decided to have them wrinkled , which I was very impressed with how it went, it basically looks like a new tub and shower.
I didn't really enjoy painting, but it only took one night and once I had the paint in the room, it really started to come together, especially with the white crown molding. the white tile the gray floor is a light green wall that also goes together, it is definitely the most fun part of painting that is to say that everything comes together like your American. Did I mention how badly I ate the seal plumbing where the toilet formed the stem? it's leaking it's not even something I installed it's just the toilet come on Kohler unfortunately the crack in the porcelain right where the water line comes in that was causing the leak underneath it all takes forever and the rhinos and, Of course, this new one is missing. a deadbolt, but luckily you have the old one, very good, moment of truth, take two, hold on for the sleet, first of all, it's boring, there is no shade door, shower door, it took about four hours, but here there's the 15 second passage of verse 47 and if you can see this. knob, but it broke when I removed it about a month ago or when you guys replaced it, so you have to replace the entire cartridge, which means I have to remove this hood, but to remove it I'm going to cut it. off because it's seized, this is by far the scariest part of the project.
I'm doing this on a workday morning so if I screw things up this is the moment of truth, let's hope there are no leaks, that's definitely a success. I finished installing the vanity. I didn't come last night with all the plumbing a little boring. I have good faucets, everything is working, at least I have all the plumbing underneath done. One drawback was that since this vanity is much taller the drain stem didn't reach the p-trap so I had to get this extender, works fine just one more step although the doors are all soft linen down here.
Aaron has a place for hair dryer, straighteners and other things. These faucets are great, there is no drain plug, it's actually a push. button overall I am very happy with the dresser you have at home and dad, this mirror, right boy, is framed and weighs 60 pounds. I don't really have studs in a good place so I have to go straight to the drywall, but again the anchors and their twist to hold very tightly to hold up this week idiot mayor Wow, one, two, three, four, okay , so here we go, that's it. I can not believe it.
It seems like so long ago when I was crying. It's been about three or four months on that floor and the works were done. I didn't work on it every day or every weekend. There were weeks when I didn't work on it. In reality, we've been using the bathroom for a few months and everything works very well. We are very satisfied. with everything working now. I'm going to enjoy not having any projects at home for at least a week or two.
