DIY Halloween Prop | Massive Life-sized Stone Portal

Jun 04, 2021
Hi, I'm Jay and Jamie, and today we're going to create this absolutely

massive

dark

portal

, it's a gateway to somewhere beyond. We've been excited to build this literally since last Halloween, yeah, at the end of Halloween, we had this idea and basically we were going to build a

portal

to the underworld, but we didn't know how to do it and this year we made the tomb

stone

s, which is our last video, and we learned how to use pink foam and make an amazing rock-like texture with it. So we're going to use the same techniques in this video to basically build a

massive

entrance door to somewhere, I don't know, creepier, somewhere spooky, so there are a few parts to this, we're going to build the entrance door and that is.

We're going to use this pink foam and then we're going to put some LEDs and some runes on the side to make it look like some spells are being cast when the front door opens and then we're going to put some projection material in the middle of the door link, yeah, we're going to set up some visual effects and some cool graphics and stuff so that it literally looks like a swirling burning portal that likes the underworld, you know, with mountains and demons, I don't know, we'll do it. Look, we'll see what we can figure out, so the first step is to start cutting our foam assembly time, so much foam that we had to cut the foam in half to get home, but now we have to glue it together. together from end to end to lengthen it again.

More Interesting Facts About,

diy halloween prop massive life sized stone portal...

Anyone who has tried to carry sheets home from the store already knows what happens, so to lengthen our boards we will use a little glue and then use some toothpicks to hold them together. together so the toothpick idea is actually something you guys talked about in our tomb

stone

video when we were struggling to figure out how to attach the tombstone to the base and we couldn't figure it out so thank you for that our foam is elongated to that our large entry door has four parts, there is the top, there are the two columns and the base, so we are going to sub-assemble each one and then we can put everything together after that, to assemble them we are going to use the same method as we made to lengthen them with toothpicks and glue and stuff, and then once they're all together we'll use some clamps until it dries.

It works so well that it was easy again. The tape doesn't provide any structural benefits, but it helps it stay in place while the glue dries, which is where the real stiffness comes from. Now it's time for the front face, so we have it in two pieces and the reason is that there will be a space here where our cornerstone will be and that space will allow us to place our LEDs, so it's like our access panel, do we need to hold it? I was thinking the same thing, we don't need to clamp this, so originally we thought I'd have to do this and then clamp it and then wait for it to dry and then start on all the others, but this is totally solid, yeah, it definitely doesn't need to clamp , it's not going anywhere, we have our column, we have our base.

When we put it together we need the column to fit into the base and not move around and move around, so what we're going to do is take this and we're going to glue it halfway up the column and then this part is going to sit in a hole. which we have cut into the base and you should know that it will feel like a lego and hopefully it won't move so for the top we are going to do something similar only we are going to glue two pieces one here and one here because we need a hole to that the LEDs go down to the column.
We're also going to run some PVC pipe through the sides and then some rebar will come out of the ground and stick to these. and that will help prevent it from blowing away in the wind. There are a few steps left before we're done with the columns, but before we can attach them to the base, we need to install this little bottom piece. Here we will see why. in a minute, so the next step is to glue the base, the top base, the large base to the small base so that they form a base. So far, we have the top built here most of the way we did it.
I've got the left and right columns behind me there and then down here we have Jamie working on the base that he's marking and we're going to drill out where the columns are going to go so we can place them on the base. We put our two columns in and they went in pretty easily and are surprisingly sturdy, so that's awesome. The reason we put these panels here is because we are going to fill the cavity with concrete so that the concrete will act as a ballast lowering the center of gravity and hopefully it won't tip over in the wind so that our portal to the underworld will have rooms because well , this is how the magic happens, these runes are from one of our favorite video games, let us know in the comments if you already know what game and bonus points, if you tell us what they say, now there will be lights behind the runes, so To make it a little more widespread we used this foam, it's actually something you would put under the floor if that were the case.
We're laying it down like a laminate floor and we just cut out some pieces and taped them together and that way when we hold a light behind the runes it will diffuse it and make it shine much better. We have these LED strips and we're going to connect them at the top and then they're going to go down the column and then they're going to come back and they're going to light up our runes from the inside and yeah, that looks incredibly cool, obviously, this looks really cool, but we noticed one problem. We'll fix it on the one below, you can see what we call hot spots, which are the individual LEDs.
In this one, we put a second layer of that foam, you can barely see the hot spots, so what we're going to do is take. these we go back and we're going to put two, maybe even three layers of that foam that our LEDs are in and we run a power cable through the back and up here we're finally finally ready to put the fronts on those that are going to continue from the same way, some water, some toothpicks, glue and tape in place, it's the next day, the glue is dry on the front panels and we did a couple more things while waiting for the glue to dry.
Place the end caps on the bottom of the pillars there just to give them a little more depth. Now we're also going to move on to the top of the entry door, so we put the end caps on the side of the entry doors and then on the top we cut holes for the tenons, which is how you basically do them. will join to the top of this gateway. Good job. Now you can see why there is a hole in the front so we can access these things. Let's connect it all. and then the cornerstone will go before it, does it work?
Yes that's fine. We designed it this way specifically to be able to take it apart, so it's going to be four main pieces, we have the top, the two columns and then the base and none of those big pieces are glued together so we can take it outside by taking it apart, but at the end of the season We can take it all apart again and put it back inside. We're going to carve our driveway to look like stone using these really cool sculpting tools, but first we're going to draw where we want, like the definitions of the stone, the cracks and things like that to beat, so to do that we're just going to use a marker. match all the time to get dirty so okay milestone achieved check this out yeah we used basically the same technique that we used on our tombstone so we sprayed it with water and applied the heat gun and that gave it this texture really cool, now you're ready for some.
Dry Lock, yeah, time to paint this whole giant thing. I hope we have enough. Oh yes, we have two coats of Dry Lock. It's really cool because it has a sandy texture and it also helps seal it and waterproof it and stuff like that so now. we're going to paint it so to paint it we're going to use some acrylic washes some browns and blacks some greens and let it drip use a little bit of water and that should make a really natural stone so take the front door outside and There are a couple of accessories that we're going to add, so on the front door steps we're going to add these candles.
Now look, this is like a ginormous epic candle. It was made by Kara of Poppy Hollow Productions and I highly recommend you check it out. Take out your YouTube page and your Instagram, so the other thing we're going to add is this fabric. Now this is going to go on the back of our gateway and then we're going to use a projector from behind and it's going to project onto this and from then on. It's semi-transparent, you'll be able to see the image there if you want to learn more about how we did the projection and how we put that whole hellscape scene together.
We have what we call a before and after show on our patreon, which is basically like before we make the video, we talk about what we think is probably going to go wrong and then we do an after show and we talk about whether that was true or false or I do not know. any other interesting things that happened, um and if you like this video, like, subscribe, comment on all that stuff, it really helps us and, um, if you want more Halloween videos, there's a whole playlist and even Next, stay evil. our stuff foam insulation there we have quite a bit uh let's carve our door next, okay, we build a dark portal, a gateway to the underworld.
