DINING ROOM 7 DAY MAKEOVER | RENOVATION VLOG | Laura Melhuish-Sprague

Feb 27, 2020
Hello guys, welcome back. I'm in a

room

you guys haven't seen before, which can only mean one thing: it's a transformation of the

dining

room

. I can't wait to show you, but before I show you the after, let's go back to how it looked before, so when we bought this property a year ago, it hadn't been touched in the last 30 to 40 years and the whole property was really starting to show signs of it, but particularly the

dining

room because it was The room most affected by nicotine absolutely stunk and also felt very sticky. The walls were stained this orange-yellow color and we weren't sure if that was pure nicotine or the fact that they had painted it a yellow-orange.

Stay tuned to find. We found out which one it was and there was also a gas fireplace that we wanted to replace with something a little more in line and they had a lot of built-ins that were quite poor quality and we just needed to get rid of the desk. on day 1, phase 1, which is demolition, so after renovating for the past year, I definitely learned that this deconstruction phase is one of my favorites, going in there, ripping everything out and making it feel a little bit like it's yours, It's such a satisfying feeling that I love it.

Pulling out the lever I started with the unit in a corner and then I also had to tackle this floor which was a cork floor, you may remember we also had it in the kitchen and back hallway and it is a real pain in the ass. to get it. I got up very grateful for this great floor lever, which meant I could do it myself and then I turned the corner and started tackling the rest of the shelving. We originally thought we could keep some of them. Pretty poor quality and we wanted to use this area as a dining room, the previous owners used it as a living room so it gave them a lot more space to have shelving.

I attacked them with a hammer and a crowbar and was very lucky that it didn't damage the back wall, they had sealed all the screws, there was no way I could get out any other way and I didn't want to repair the walls too much, so maybe this It's purely a matter of luck. but I was very grateful for it and then I also took out the other unit on the other side. This one was a little easier to pull out, it's definitely a little more rickety and as soon as I started pulling this one out it really started to open up.

They actually made it look a lot bigger and also brighter, so I just had lunch, so it's around noon. I got rid of all the closets in here that are still dark and can be measured outside, one is gone and this one is gone here. I think this will probably be a disaster zone when fixing the rest of the walls. I'm just going to paint over it, but this one I think could use a little work. There's a lot of wood missing, but I don't have it. I haven't been putting it on the Skip very carefully, so I might wait until everyone comes home to make this floor very sticky, as you can hear with my feet, she thinks some dust has fallen off, which has become a Now I see the room a little better.
I have to wait until I get home from work to move some of this heavier stuff, but I think I might try attacking the chimney. This gas fireplace is actually the only heat the room had. It didn't have any other radiators and as we're not renovating this room yet we weren't going to install any radiators so when we took it out we really wanted to think of something else we could put in and we ended up going. for a bioethanol fire because we don't know when I have to worry about the chimney or cleaning the chimney and it has worked very well as a temporary measure and I was very happy to see this come back into the dining room, it's dark It's probably a little necessary for it to be especially us ourselves, we have to continue with the work and look what we find.
We have these same red tiles here in the dining room and we hope to keep them. These will save us a job and all you actually eat doing this sees this little guard and yeah we have our fingers crossed that we can get it out okay so our plan is to get this whole chimney out that section is now out and we're hoping to take this part out today, turn it off a little bit and you know this room is just kind of a temporary solution, so if we can keep these tiles and it looks clean and tidy, very nice when it's been a long time and here she is, oh , I look a lot better now, the plan is obviously to get all this stuff out and then we'll need about a net and maybe even paint the inside, so guys, it's been a few weeks and by a few weeks I mean two weeks, the dog of the family was here, as you know, and I just couldn't do this.
This was a haircut, kind of like a garden outing, so we tried not to do it too much. There's a lot of trouble here. I couldn't bother him, just keep it nice for him to come and I feel like there's a lot to do now. Number one is using a landfill again, so actually this camera's battery has been charging. I've been cleaning it now I'm going to start removing the carpet which I've wanted to do for so long it's so dusty and terrible. I still have some things to move, okay, somewhere behind me, maybe I would hear that it's really windy today. and it's coming down the chimney, but I feel very moved in this whole room because, as you know, I came in here last night and it told me to destroy everything I do before the Christmas aura and I thought no, this will happen, so I come back here today . and I hope to get to a point where I can paint, as you know, this is just a temporary room.
We'll read this to you at some point, so I don't want to spend too much time on it. Oh, and let me. I show you that I partly did something and nolle, I finished it, which I'm not sure if you can remember, but these two wars looked pretty bad, they both had the bubbling effect on them, they obviously still look a little crazy right now, so We have to do a temporary drywall job on them and just fix all the parts that we have removed, they look much better and I am absolutely praying that the floorboards go through this door because it may show.
I have a small problem if not. I had to cut up the carpet because we had items in the room that I had to keep moving to get rid of them and I slowly got everything up and was so happy to see the floorboards. Underneath they are not perfect, but they were absolutely fine. Sometimes I wish you could sniff on YouTube and this is one day I'm so glad you can't. This carpet has a lot of dust, a lot of nicotine and mud. and our whole kind of

renovation

journey involves all of you too and this has been the only rug since we moved that I really wanted to get rid of today when I finally walk out the door and I'm so happy and Then they told me to They removed any evidence that it was carpet.
I also tore the tape off the side so it was all ready to clean and paint. Now this will probably be a new level, so we use this. stuff to trap nicotine it's like industrial cleaning and grease remover it's very strong you definitely need to wear gloves and we do it it will spray amazing omg this stuff is crazy with this in the living room and it appeared in There's quite a bit, the dining room is from Mussolini, so I'm sorry, can you hit me if I'm making noise? There will probably be a lot more than you expected.
I'm interested to see because we've been wondering if the walls there were painted. with an orange tone, well that's very entertaining and you might be able to find out that I'm also going to start a little bit on the ceiling and something you know, I'm going to clean it up and then it might ring a little bit and then I'll tune again but let's take one last look at this room if it's nicotine I think this could make history is the brightness of the ceiling hum is probably the most affected the new thing seems to improve to the edges that's right My room asks me if it's not nicotine, but how can you see where they are From the photos, it actually looks pretty white to me and I'm thinking it used to be white here.
You can also see that there's some kind of weird patch there that's particularly bad. and the reason I think it was white is because, oh, you can't see it anymore, but there were patches here that were very white, yeah, so anyway let's see what this does and you'll probably see the full effect. there but here it will come so we're drifting yeah I think a lot of it is nicotine and it looks like we were right just look at how that ceiling is rising. I can't believe how much has come off the ceiling. I feel a little more confident now that I can make the ceiling white again because it's falling down, but I mean it's crazy, so crazy that I'm putting on this mask because I feel like this is going to be the equivalent of smoking a cigarette. cigarette every day for the rest of my life cleaning this and I certainly don't want that to be left when, yes, Moscow for the rest of this job, yes, that ceiling is literally covered in nicotine, it's turning whitish just by wiping it with a cleaning liquid and a wipe.
I can't believe it, I'm still a little speechless. All I can think is that we actually wallpapered the ceiling, so it must have been pretty porous and came off so easily. I'm halfway there and I stay by the window because it's very hot here. I can't believe how this yuning turned out. I can't do that little patch there because I currently have no floor there. Wow, it feels so good, even though I feel like it. but the open window is being cleaned and it will be cool and I don't know, for some reason this makes me feel like it will look beautiful again here and you can see it also in the ceiling rose that is falling down. quite a bit but I want to be careful obviously I have the light on I like to keep but it's just I want to say wowza so I hope the ceiling is white at least at the end of the day and it's not too bad to paint?
The walls are not peeling off as much as I thought they would. I don't know if that's just the case that nicotine has adapted to walls a little better. You can see it here dripping or if the walls. They are and just a little bit of cream. I'm not sure, skeptical, I think they were probably white, but I don't think it's going to make them wait again anyway, at least it would be cool for you to paint here, oh. God, I can't wait to paint and that's the color we're going to choose if I haven't shown you already.
Well, 20:22 me. I already had my mask, which I absolutely needed. It smells like I'm not sure any of you recognize the smell, but it's wet nicotine and it's very strange, very fragrant here. I can't believe how quickly one arrives, around 3:30. I'm pretty shit, I must not be very tired because I have my arms. over my head for most of the day, but today I've done a lot, almost everything, let me turn around and go online, you're a fake, so if you can't see me at all, it might be a pretty good thing to do. anyway, um, but I'm not sure you can tell the difference here through the camera.
You know I finished the roof. I also cleaned all these walls here and then they look much better along with the baseboard let me tell you it was a pretty big job, it still looks more faded than I thought. I haven't done these patches because they were terrible Alex, but they were under the cabinets so they should be fine and tonight I hope Iran and most like the things that were in this room upstairs, but I hope you can take more of these things so that they can come here. I don't need to clean the walls here, but yes.
I need to make this type of greenhouse door section. I'm actually spray painting this with these things that I hope are good. I got it from Amazon and the reviews are really good, it's like a matte dark color and this room is going to be very Luke dark, but I'm squeamish about it and then I need to take all of this off and do that too, but I'm thinking, I'm thinking I can take a little break because what happens is you just come home raring to go. I am absolutely said. We have to go somewhere where there are highlights or wait in line.
I think I'll need something for the wall he's building upstairs. I need some polyethylene, although we have some that I want to be in a pot that I can just scrape off and easily. I do and I think I might even consider smearing myself with blocking paint this afternoon. I'm just applying the stain blocking paint so I started with the trim and then I also did the sealing process which was pretty unpleasant and then I moved on. to the walls and only applied one coat of this to make sure the nicotine was completely gone. I don't think I've signed up for a while.
I've been working in this dining room and today Ali is here helping me. so hopefully we should be towards the end today, we've done that, let me show you what I've done today. Bali has been starting to get ready by the fireplace, so has he if he focuses on these two wars. here, I'm actually looking at SOPA, maybe not on this one, so it's a little bit right here, yeah, all the parts there and we've coated all the walls and the white, which I know looks a little ridiculous, it looks like we're going This room is dark, but this is a stain blocker andI really didn't want to be able to smell Anika in this room anymore and to be honest you can't, it smells really good right now obviously we still have to do this to you. walls here and then we went to pick up the paint today so I hope we can darken that day the ceiling is king so-soWell I did two coats of the same blocker on the cornice and rosette and also on the ceiling so it's done for a normal coat of white and it looks so white, to be honest, I never thought it would look in this room and I just started, which is a little scary, so we have this bad thing for you that we're not going to have.
I really don't like PVC at all and just tried it. I have this matte spray paint and I want to spray it in this room, it's going to get very very dark and it's going to be like a little test for me and I have to see if we like it dark, but I'm cleaning up the nicotine and it's starting to run off now. just to show you how white it's coming out in contrast to this part here that I haven't done yet. I can't believe I feel like it will feel so bright in here once we have cleaned both windows inside. and outside he just wants to show you I know they can't see them Yes, it's a little scary Yes I know it's a room I think this shows that with a little effort everything could look a lot better.
I just used the same cleaning fluid on the windows that I used with the rest of the room and the ceiling which I'll link below and it really highlights it beautifully and then we moved on to phase 4 which took it to the dark side where it really we were. I'm excited to paint in that color and we chose a color called squid ink in the paint and paper libraries. I'll leave information about that below as well, but we blend it locally at our local breweries and Ollie is just applying it here and us. We were really excited to see what it was like, we had never painted with the darkroom before so it was really interesting to see what we thought of it and as for the coverage, the dark paint is exactly what I wanted, it hid any stains underneath.
It was really the main and only reason we decided to go dark and it worked very well. We ended up having to do two coats of paint, which in one of our back rooms I think we did about eight to nine coats. I also made the shelf the same color and there were several reasons for this number one to save a little money. I didn't have to buy different colors of paint for different elements in the room and it also saved me a lot of time because I don't have to use marker and I think I could just stick it wherever I wanted.
I simply painted the cabinet with a brush. I know it looks a little patchy, but I'm going to do it with a roller and Ollie is now going to spray this, this turned out a lot better than I expected, but what I will say is order a lot more types of paint than you think. I ordered too and we ended up needing four. I'm going to tackle these babies so we managed to keep the most of them when we took them to Ostrosky to the fireplace and I actually just tried a few of them a little bit of tile adhesive and grout remover it seems to be working well I'm Using the scraper to remove the piles of adhesive we make.
Unfortunately, I have this hole here. I just don't know how I'm going to fix it. I might have to try coloring it somehow. I'm not sure I have to look it up online and obviously before they had this space. It's also missing because it looks like it's a d4 sieve, but I think overall I'm looking forward to cleaning up these apps. They look good because we don't want to spend any more pennies and we don't want the work, and I just scraped and rubbed them. tiles for what seemed like an absolute eternity, but I'm glad I managed to polish them up a bit and reuse them.
I have another cleaning job and I'm going to clean this window. I'll show you up close. I'm not sure if they're going to make a terrible sound to begin with, but this is what we decided on instead of using tape for everything. Watch me just scrape it off and it comes out very clean and I see I need to fix the windows. and also the top, they also need to be cleaned on the outside, but I won't do that until dawn. This method worked great for us, but I don't know if I would recommend it if these are your permanent doors. or windows that you are keeping, since we plan to renovate this and remove the doors at some point, we weren't too worried about that, but this was a very satisfying job, finally cleaning and scraping them all.
Today's tasks are to clean a lot. a lot there now I'm with the scraper in my hand and we're going to finish off the top of the windows I won't continue outside until all of these back you can't have a safe it will have to be like I'm turning from the glass to mine and then a little bit of a side towards you I want to be mute on the other side of the room the five necks I'm going to clean the inside of the fire base notes coming out a wire brush I was thinking of painting It has the same colors, a small room, but I'm going to do some paint touch-ups and then clean and start painting and now I'm starting on the floor, which I know is not the most beautiful floor ever and yes, ideal.
In this world we would have tidied them up and sanded them nice, but it's not worth being in this temporary room, so I'm literally sitting here with all my tools, pulling out anything that's sharp and pushing in the nails, and then I'm going to clean it up, tell me that I'm going to fill in some areas and then to be honest, once it's painted, I'm just going to cover it with a rug, so what I'm using here, don't pardon the technical terms, if it's a hammer and a punch. so I can punch out the nails that I find that I can't get out and then I also have a little tool to get out the staples that I find, well it seems like a really quick filler, but I have just completed some of the worst parts.
This ends, it was probably the worst thing I thought of in quite a few of them, but I think I'll have to leave it. I'm only doing this half of the room because we have the table and a bunch of stuff on this side, so I'm going to do half of it and then I'm going to rotate it all over the place and this wood, hey, it takes two hours to dry. I guess I don't think there's much I can do in the meantime that I can touch on. a little paint in places. Oh, actually, I just remember that you've seen that it's going to fill in these pieces that already appeared and now I'm starting to paint the floor, so I'm starting at the edges and also the corners. with a brush and then I have a reliable roller.
If I can give you some advice, if you are going to paint, get yourself the biggest roller you can find, it saves you a lot of time compared to bags of screws and I really love it. so I roll it around the rest of the floor with this one with a big extension pole, we just bought a flute, this dining table fits perfectly in the corner of the room, we didn't even measure it and we bought it second hand, so I have no idea how we use it. We managed to do that next, we have these two prints, we have some cards, two of them and we are thinking probably about this wall where the dining room table is and like anyone who is decorating, we couldn't decide where we wanted these images, which side . we wanted to know how high they were together, luckily my mom was here this day so she could help us make the decision and then mom helped me roll out the rug.
In fact, we bought this one from Ikea. I think it's 200 by 300 so very good size and it only weighed 80 pounds so it was a real bargain. You may have seen yesterday that we picked up quite a few things, including this large mirror. I'm not sure if they showed them, did we also pick up a mantelpiece? I'm going to go with something really simple like this, but if you can see, it used to have a mantel and since this is just temporary and we didn't even take the walls off, it looked a little better, whatever you name it, some were too rustic. for my taste, so I grabbed a shelf and it was only 20 pounds, so if I end up not using it I can probably sell it.
That's not all, but I'm going to paint it white so that, hopefully, I can put it on the fireplace and use the paint that we already had for this one. You may remember that I used Pharaon Ball's Wimborne White in the living room on all the woodwork, so I thought it would go perfectly with this mantel. and once it was painted we put it together because it actually came in pieces and then we needed to get it in the right position on the wall and we went back and forth a little bit trying to decide where it should be and then we got that tape.
Measure it, you measured it and just W, make sure and then we screwed it into place and I think it looks like it should have always been there at the same time you opened our light fixture please don't just put some soundproofing in the chimney. I hope you saw some sound of wind coming down. I see that we are going to cover it and he already put some wood, yes, and we have cleaned it. You can see the wood there now, so I hope that stays a bit. Warmer and also one last noise here right behind you, once Alia was done with the fireplace I started to get the flu which I think is very realistic so this is our bioethanol fire and it looks exactly like a stove firewood and even come. with these flus that you can put on to make it look even more realistic and then, but not least, Ali hung the mirror, it was quite a stressful moment because we weren't quite sure it was a really heavy gold mirror and we did it.
I don't know how to put it in so we have this huge stud in the wall that is absolutely huge and so far so good and I think it's about time we look back and see what it was like before and what it is like now. on what I would do a quick tour so this is the room when you open the door from the hallway this is probably one of my favorites you find out I love walking through the house and seeing it here so we have the hardwood floor across from the hallway but we painted this because we weren't staying here and I was really worried about how it would look but you did an amazing job, this paint was really good and the pink color on the walls is great. squid ink and I'll leave it down and we matched it with a RAL color for the floor and I think it worked perfectly because as you know this room was supposed to be a very quick

makeover

and I didn't want to have to worry about it. about taping the baseboard or the entire ring and worrying about where I was painting, so it was very quick to do a color and I didn't have to worry about that, other than of course the ceiling, which we did in white and the trim .
And who do you think really lights up the room? As you walk in, you can probably tell that we haven't filled them yet. There are still some jobs we need to do in the room. These are the IKEA River 50 by 50 prints. We painted them black and I love how they look there when grouped together. I think we're going to take some really nice family photos, probably black and white, and then when you turn the corner, you'll see I'll see this little dresser. I didn't actually pick up the house on purpose, but I saw it on a second-hand website and thought it's really beautiful.
I'll pick it up and we'll bust it. Here for now and as we build finances with the house, we could change it or change it. It was originally in this strip and dark that you can see. I stayed on the side. I didn't have time to sand it all. and to be honest, I kind of have to wait until spring, so I want to do it outside. I'm just doing it outside in the rain, which wasn't ideal, but I started sanding it and thought maybe I'd keep it light. pretty close to the light color originally, I was going to do a dark tint again but without the stripe, so let me know in the comments below what you think would look good, if it would be better in this type of dark tint or should I keep working on it . and I'm trying to get it and then on top I just put some hydrangeas with berries, but I love how they bring a little bit of light and then a light lampshade that looks beautiful, it can brighten up this corner and then I bought this one for pennies from home, it's been in our previous houses and I think that does something in that corner, although I was originally hoping to get some sort of French glass unit so I could put cutlery and maybe crockery for the dining room, so if I find something that fits perfectly now I might change this one and then go to the other side, we have the fireplace, so originally we weren't going to put a mantel here, which you may have been able to tell from the video, but I didn't love it without a mantel, so can we pick this one up? secondhand?
Someone weighing 20 pounds painted it white. We opened up the fireplace and kept the brick and it looks so good and then we have the bioethanol fire which It's surprising we don't actually have, unfortunately we don't have heat in this room so it's something I was really worried about. Their original gas fire was the only heater they had and this puts out a surprising amount of heat and obviously the ease of use was just amazing, being able to just put it on and we can light it up whenever we want, usually, and light it up on the spot. in that we have people around and it just gives the most beautiful effect, especially in a dark gray.
The January day above was another second-hand piece of this mirror that we picked up on the Facebook marketplace. It's huge. I'm not sure if you can tellscale and has the most impressive details in a real statement piece. It was quite an effort to put that on the wall and the first day it came out we were worried it might fool you, but I'm sure it's a mirror we'll have for years to come and then we'll keep this shelf. over here, which I'm really glad about because I feel like it adds a lot to the room and even though it's not styled yet, they are literally pieces we picked out of the boxes we've been saving upstairs.
I picked up those jello molds. recently when we went to an antique store and then we got a picture of all these mom and dad. I want to get a really nice photo of at least mom to get in here. I think you picked it up at West Elm and we have a some silver pieces there and then just some photos of the game, a few more photos and then frames and a candle down there and I can't wait to get this started some more. I'm thinking I made them some baskets down here so I don't get a little bit more storage because they want to use these useful features and hopefully get some games and things like that that are relevant to the dining room.
Moving on to this section, this is the section that we probably still need to change the most. Ignore the terrible alley that's a job we're doing in the spring, so make sure you subscribe so you don't miss that one. I almost managed to scrape off some of the dirt on top, but I was doing it alone, so I'm really sorry that it's not a more beautiful cleaning, but I wanted to show this for you, although it brings a lot more light and I think in the future we're going to do that. put some pretty fairy lights in the alley to make everything shine and of course lots of greenery.
I don't think I can do it justice right now with the spray paint, but it was amazing. I would definitely recommend it. I love it. This dark color I think makes it look much more modern and overall also interesting because it was terribly dirty, we still have to change the handle here, although unfortunately we didn't get to that, you say we changed the handles in our back room in the PVC windows and it worked very, very well and I thought I'd come back here to explain this area a little bit more obviously, we just had that little bench there right now with an orchid, but we're actually thinking For this reason we pushed the dining room table towards a side.
We would love to have a seating area here so some like white linen chairs, maybe a nice armoire here and maybe we could have a loveseat there, maybe even with a TV. On the other hand, I think it could be lovely in the summer because that door actually opens and then you can sit and count on the garden and then move to this part of the room where we have our clocks and their prints. there, which I think matches the style perfectly, and then our dining table, which is like the main part of this room, we actually bought it secondhand, it's so beautiful, it's solid teak and it had one thing in it eBay. as reminders to let you know when things come up and I had been looking for a table for our garden it was teak so maybe one day we can look at this one and put it in our garden but for now I think it looks really beautiful here and we have sanded it but We haven't actually dyed it yet, which is why I have this on top because I'm just showing you how we're actually living and here right now and I don't want to put something on the table, so I'm just going to leave this here.
My brother and his girlfriend very kindly gave us a Neptune Christmas gift over the years with the candles on and then there is a white bar company with a little willow. it and the tablecloth itself are from H&M and the chairs that we bought secondhand probably about four years ago when we moved into our first place, we actually have six, so we're going to move these six here so we can seat six. People, we were actually very lucky in this room to still have the roof workers. I think it's so beautiful and the light we got from HomeSense, in fact, we're going to put some of these types of lanterns around the house when we start renovating. the floor from top to bottom so I thought it would fit pretty well and that's a really good overview of our dining room.
We love it, we love having a place where we can come and sit and eat, and I also work here during the day. because it is the only space they have where I can sit and work and it is amazing to finally be able to invite friends and family to enjoy the house, let me know if you liked it by giving it a like and subscribe if you and you because we have many transformations in the house in this moment and I will see you next time, thank you.
