This is Brian Chute, he is the head of the racing department at Speed Sport Tuning. Some of you may remember him from the 964 ammo engine. Rebuild video and jrz suspension installation episodes. He works on Porsche race cars daily, but doesn't have a toy of his own, so he asked me if I'd take a look at this

Triumph Spitfire in Vermillion Red or what's left of one after sitting in the

. behind the newly acquired Speed Sports building, so when we rented this building here, the owner said, "Hey, there's a car back here. I want you guys to do something with it because it's been there for many years and I don't ".

I know what's going on with that. I don't want to deal with it anymore. I didn't want to see him again. They gave it to you, so he gave us the car as part of the deal with the building. So you know what I want. Take a look and see if something is really worth doing. So I called you to see if we can clean up the inside, maybe make it shine again and see if it's really worth putting in so much. I guess we'll find out. We'll find out, as you can probably tell, it was raining really hard and the car lived in a swampy area, so I didn't have high hopes for the interior, but at first glance, the paint looked good, especially when wet, which may be It doesn't look so good when dry - the tires were obviously flat and sinking into the wet ground and some of the falling branches damaged the paint and metal panels - but it's certainly manageable at first glance to try to move the Triumph we removed first .

The cover reveals a soggy, moldy interior, which was no surprise, it smells horrible. Then we filled the tires to see if they could hold long enough to get us onto the pavement and into the trailer. Then we pushed the car out of the mud and headed toward the driveway, but the tires were losing air quickly and were now sinking into a puddle, so Carlos made the custom race card that speed sports uses in the track to pull the race cars or move tires and quickly get through the pits once it was hooked up, we dragged the

triumph

onto the road while Carlos rearranged the tow hook, a parachute if he could open the trunk as it is one of my favorite moments of any barn find to see what's left inside, similar to the Mercedes trunk after 37 years. and finding the original manuals, mechanics books and the original sales receipt, we found some rusty parts, two original Triumph magazine advertisements and a jug which, ironically, is probably more valuable than the car itself.

He is a champion. The engine is a 1493 cc inline 4-cylinder. Producing a whopping 53 horsepower and hitting 60 in just over 16 seconds, the base price of a 1500 was about $5000 in

1979

before the last Spitfire rolled off the line in August 1980 before The factory doors are closed and, looking at the battery, it looks like this has been moved or driven in the last four or five years, so I might have a chance to start it in the rain that is now increasing. We wanted to get the car into the trailer quickly but, naturally, the winch battery died and so did the tires.
Losing air quickly, we couldn't push it up the ramp, so Carlos ran back to the racing department and with a jump box in hand he returned, moved the winch and we headed to the workshop, after a very short and wet. Danbury, we unloaded the smelly beast at the shop the next morning. I removed the leaves to get a real picture of the paint while it was dry. My goal today was to disassemble and assess the condition before making a point apart from everything being wet, moldy and/or smelling, I found some egg grains and a bone in the engine bay which was somewhat sinister to say the least.
At the very least, though, at this point I hadn't found any definitive source for the smell, so I simply vacuumed the area with a wet vacuum and dried it. with old towels but, naturally, while I was doing that, a slice of rust went under my fingernail and I thought I was going to hit the ceiling, it was tremendously painful, so I turned around and concentrated on the trunk, which was surprisingly clean despite the strongest. Smell, so I just attributed that smell to standing water in the mold, so for the last step I removed the black plastic trim, but the bolts on the convertible top were preventing it from coming out.
I felt that the smell was somewhere between the trunk and somewhere behind. the passenger seats in that area, so to do that I had to remove all the plastic trim to get to the plastic trim. First I removed the convertible top with the convertible top of the car and was removing all the seat belts. I unfolded the metal. frame that was very rusty and clamped shut once we both stepped on one side they came together we managed to open the frame revealing the source of the smell, oh there you go, this at one point looked like it was a squirrel, now I don't have it I have No idea if I died there or if it was killed and then brought in by another animal, but it doesn't really matter, it was in wet decomposition and absolutely 100% the source of the smell.
Later that night, after filming work, some friends came to help. to remove the roof rack, transmission carpet and prepare the rusty floor to protect and paint, this goes without saying, but obviously this is on a show car nor is it throwing a ton of money at a $500 car that was found in the

woods

that may or may not work, in other words this is a labor of love, so with that in mind I called my friend Joe from Jamie Body Works to help me figure out how to reduce the rate of rust in the apartment without a big budget, if you remember.
For a few years now, the guys at J&B are the ones who restored the Mo 964 by removing a ton of rust and painting it with five coats of Bentley black to give it perspective, which took about six months to do, this one will only take about two days and then we were able to move on after masking the area. Joe applied Mord rust and let it sit overnight. Now notice the bubbles and pops on the floor surface the next day as we let the Mort Rust do its work. I wanted to get a touch-up done, so I quickly polished the spot on the trunk to see how it would look later in the shoot, removed the panel, and then we headed to a local auto parts store to get matching touch-up paint while we were at it.
There waiting for the panel color to be matched, we picked up some spray paint to clean up the discolored bumpers. Later we had to wait a few hours to get the right paint, so I returned to the workshop to attempt an impossible mission to save the wet, moldy and somewhat rusty carpets clearly the seat frame raised and sitting and the long standing water transferred the rust to the rugs, which essentially destroyed the fabric, so despite my efforts I suggested purchasing a new rug kit now at this point. It was time to remove more of the rust, which had already done its job.
First I picked up the chemical, then I applied water and cleaned it, then I used a prep saw and cleaned it with blue J&B prep wipes, which took forever because rust kept seeping through the cracks everywhere. scraped with a red pad Andrey prepped again with the area clean and prepped. I put on a few coats of matte plyo primer in the same process as the Tahoe from last week's total interior stripping episode. I started with a few coats of white and then finished with a darker gray the next morning I washed the paint off with a foamier solution in the aerator.
Now with old single stage paint like this you can usually get a good idea of what the finished surface will look like when wet but watch it dry and look faded again, which is why when I saw it a few days before under pouring rain I had a good feeling that it would come back to life permanently if I removed the dead, dry skin that was on top. a surface reflection and a depth similar to when wet notice the lines on the trunk of the roof rack, we will come back to this a little later. I then measured the paint to confirm my suspicions that this had been repainted at some point in its life.
Sure enough, the paint is 10 to 14 mils red gauge, so I had plenty of room to play, assuming the integrity of the paint was off. endangered by long exposure to UV rays. The first attempt was with the Meguiar red foam pad and 210. Polished to prevent debris from sticking to the paint surface and clogging the pad and after a few minutes it was very clear that the Triumph paint was going to be revived in just a few hours with this technique if you are a fan of details. fan at this point you'll see I'm not using compressed air so this building doesn't have air yet so I use the microfiber towel method which is less effective and more time consuming but it still works so no you do it.
Don't give up if you don't have it, I'll save you the rest of the paint polishing, but I finished removing all the dead paint and then used three inches for the tight spots and then buffed the entire car with a foam pad. revealing a new surface, okay guys, now I'm behind the camera. I wanted to take a little break. Clearly, you can see the before and after, it's night and day. It's crazy now, if you look closely as a detail nerd, you can see. that the shine or the depth has really come back but the shine is not there that you know it's not really bright shiny it's not reflective why do you see look at all that orange peel there right now that's an indication that the car has been repainted so If we step back a little bit and think about it, I put the paint depth gauge there and there's between 7 and 14, let's say mils, and that to me immediately indicates that it's been repainted, not just repainted.
It's probably been repainted and let's say a garage or some kind of thing that's not related to the body shop. The third little thing is if you get in the car you can see inside, let me turn up the light for you, it's brown and then there's some brown. back, right there, right there, so again he indicated that it's okay, it looks like someone had a good time over the weekend and repainted the car. They actually did a half-decent job, but if you look at that orange peel, you could probably go in and sand the whole thing off. that down there I think there's enough clear coat to do that I'm not going to do that today but here's another example if I walk up to the 458 special yeah there's a little bit of orange peel there but you look at the depth and the shine .
I mean, I just polished that, but the depth of the shines is evident. The irony is that there is less paint here, maybe 40%, a little more or less half the paint is here and then it is here, so there is twice as much paint, but again if you don't do the finishes like A body shop would do it, so in this case we would have to sand everything with water and make it look like a piece of glass. There's enough paint to do that, but I'm not going to do it. Go too crazy because it's a little fragile and as you can see, I mean we have bigger issues to deal with, but I thought that's something you might find interesting as I go through these barn finds, one painting stage, they find it very interesting.
Things in this case were repainted and painted red over brown. I then prepared the areas to paint the bumpers. I could have painted the bumpers before buffing the paint, but I didn't rely on wet paint nor did I want to buff. The dust sticks to the wet paint either with everything that needed to be covered. I applied six thin coats of bumper black to minimize staining and fading paint on the large American bumpers while it dried. I used my Iwata Studio Series airbrush and the We bought new paint at the parts store to touch up the dings, dings and scuffs again.
This isn't a show car, but shooting is the man and I wanted to do the best I could in the time I could dedicate to this project afterwards. That night,Shu went back to work putting in his new seats because the old ones were not only unsightly but structurally rusty and unstable. I think he paid about $500 for the new pair online which looked pretty good, but ironically as a race car mechanic he installs them. non-factory seats in cars almost daily, so you are very familiar with how to make something fit that is not necessarily designed perfectly to fit in all cars, with some testing and removing the stock rails you will mount the seats directly on the floor because the cabin is extremely tight and your legs don't fit under the steering wheel;
Otherwise, with the game plan set and the comfortable tilted seat, we installed the new carpet we found online for one hundred and twenty-five dollars delivered, which will take a little love. and a little scissor work to make it fit. The first step is to open the box and obviously take out all the parts and place them as if they were in the car. Next, place the mat on plastic and apply interior adhesive in a criss-cross pattern and allow it to dry for five minutes, then repeat the steps on the metal floor and frame, once sticky, massage the mat into your designated spot now, As you can imagine, with a hundred and twenty-five dollar rug you will need to trim and make.
Some relief cuts and test fit of each section before applying the adhesive, otherwise you will not be able to come back with the carpet glued and looking better. We noticed that the e-brake armrest cover is a little bit broken, but we will play with this later, for now we reinstall the seats for another fit test, the reason we install the mats first is because the thickness of the Carpet or fabric will make the seat uneven or not flush, so we had to take this into account with a basic template made of dots and holes drilled in the floor and then vacuuming the chips that the gap receives will ensure the seat directly to the floor with a specific and comfortable rake with the seat in the correct position, place the carpet and then use a marker to mark the place on the carpet under the car and then we quickly made holes with a drill for simplicity, we also needed to carve some spots on the tunnel carpet that also overlapped the bolts now once this was all in place the moment of truth would be tightening the bolts went through the carpet and I would be lying if I said it was easy because we managed to do all this not really being able to see anything because the seat was so close to the floor that we repeated the steps on the passenger side and gave the best to Thalma and Louie when we were done, at about 1am. m., it's actually not that bad.
On the last day I removed the last of the damaged vinyl on the back and traced it onto the new black vinyl we had bought at the store. About $40 after some very basic tracing, I cut the material knowing I would need to trim and shape it after applying the interior adhesives. This isn't the best job I've ever done, but it will work for Then match the black carpet, I painted the rear plastic cover piece that separates the gas tank from the back of the driver's seat, which is engineering at its best. 1979. With the trunk piece and e-brake cover drying, I cleaned the heavily leaking rubber and rims with foam to remove mud and forest debris, then applied an ammo skin paint seal to the surface To increase its depth, shine and protection, we highlighted the vibrant vermilion red and then quickly cleaned the

disgusting

windows of the scrub pad and installed a squeegee during the day. glasses and I filled the tires for the hundredth time to move it around the shop at the end of day six and I want to give you a little tour of the car at this point, now many of you will ask hey, why didn't you wet the sand?
They take the paint off and describe to you why now if you remember when I polished it afterwards it looked like someone had a rattle all over the car, in fact they did a pretty good job now it's wet sand, not much I can do. but the idea of what sanding is, wet sanding an area and matching it to the rest of the car, panel by panel, makes sense. I can't do that and here's why you see this place here and I'll show you. In many other examples, I see that it's a little more brown than brown, it's like the interior color: the car was brown, as we discovered, and then I painted it red, which means the paint is a little thin there, so that, as a detailer, I'm saying, hey, I can make that perfectly flat showroom, the perfect car, whatever you want to call it, look like a mirror, but I have to match it with that door, so I run the risk of blowing paint on looking to match the hood, so it doesn't make much sense, you have to use it, you know your head a little bit and decide, hey, is it worth the effort for me?
I don't think so, plus the owner shoots my friend and says, oh my god, the car. It looks amazing, don't worry, we have to spend all our time on the engine, so don't worry about the paint. Here is a perfect example. This is where the luggage rack was. I'm going to keep coming and going here. You'll see lines, you'll see that white line, that light line and then next to it it's dark and there's a light line and then next to it it's a little bit dark, so those light lines work a little bit lighter is where the roof rack was.
Block the Sun never, the Sun is our enemy here, so we were blocking the Sun and shielding the painting, it looks a little better and if you move to the side where it wasn't shielding, you know, or blocking the Sun, it's a bit. a little more brown, meaning it just wore the paint away again. This is a rattle, so it is not as loud as the OEM. Here's another example right on this shoulder again. I don't know if you can see there's a little bit more brown right there and Then here, right there, there's kind of a weird triangle.
Right around there, the paint seems to be very thin again in the pursuit of trying to make this a perfect contest. I think back to the day we pulled this out of the woods, so this is it. It's already a thousand times better, I think it might jeopardize the paint, which would defeat the purpose of this guy, he just wants to go for a drive and enjoy the cars, this isn't going to work, you know, you know Pebble Beach or something? . Put the rear end in there, I just just painted it and we want to put that in just to clean it up so we don't see the trunk area and then the only thing left is to let Brian do the magic on it and get this engine running. and hopefully go for a ride when she arrived that night, he installed the plastic back and plastic side moldings that we had also covered with the $40 roll of vinyl from jo-ann fabrics, as well as the pieces of the armrests that we prepared and painted.
Now, this whole project was a lot of fun, but it's kind of anti-climactic if we can't start the car, so we worked at night thinking there would be a lot of problems that would need to be solved to get it running so we could drive it the next day. during the day it smells like coolant, it's just old sludge, the cooling system probably definitely needs to be changed, change it any time you're dealing with something that's been sitting idle for a long period of time, the first really good thing you want to do is only you.
Know your fluids, any visual inspection you see, these rocker arms here are pretty dry, well that's pretty good, it's actually a little overfilled, it's probably just from sitting after all the basic inspection steps, the passage He took out the spark plug to see if it had worked in the last few years. pretty much what I'm seeing here is just a lot of soot, which is just that black part, so it's just unburned fuel, so it would have run to get to that condition, it's not wet, what would there be inside? There's oil or water or anything in the combustion chamber I see a little bit of oil here that's a normal thing just from the combustion chamber buildup very dark very dark means rich in fuel but it's probably run at some point, The battery had obviously died a long time ago, so we attached the jumper and then I got in the car to start it for the first time.
I guess it's going to start well. Well, so much for that, I'm probably ruining it. You're right. Well, she runs. I doubt you can see the spark. I could barely see it. I don't think it was a big piece of land, but there was definitely some there, so it was like 10 at night and we were running, which is completely unbelievable and crazy. I don't even know how. It worked, but we made it work, it really wasn't that hard, but the problem is that when I turn around behind me, it's night outside, it's raining, and we don't have a roof, so we have to wait until tomorrow to go for a walk. on this card it works soon this is really exciting the next morning we filled the tires once again we installed the polished roof rack and got in the car for a short ride now we knew we weren't going to go very far because the car already had almost no brakes and the tires were totally shredded, all of which would be fixed later and would shoot up the old Mirage, but it was fun to see, even if it was only 50 feet or so, what it would feel like once the Triumph got back on the road.
