May 30, 2021
Hello, welcome to my channel. I'm so glad you can be with me today. I love

decoupage

and creating projects and sharing them with my viewers, especially

beginners

, so maybe you've heard the words

decoupage

and mod

podge

and don't really know it. which means I have a beginner video that has basic techniques, basic supplies including mod

podge

and also some projects to get you started. I will put the links below and while you are on my channel, subscribe to decoupage diy with joe marie domino and hit the bell because then you will receive video upload notifications. Well, I recently made some

glass

videos, we made a

glass

cookie plate and a glass cutting board.

They both started clear, I got them from the dollar tree and what we did was undock it from the back, so here's the napkin I used on that one and here's the one I used on that one. Well, I'm going to pick up some more glass videos and this one will be about something that's a little bit curvier like a jar. Jars can be very intimidating. I answer questions almost every day about how to make a jar and it's really not that difficult if you have the right techniques, if you prepare, you have the right products, you have the right products. tools, it really doesn't have to be that difficult, okay, you'll be able to make a jar right away, so this is a simple jar.

More Interesting Facts About,

decoupage a glass jar best tips for beginners chalk paint mod podge napkins...

I got it from my recycling, my recycling, so it's actually a recycled project so what. What I did was I soaked this in warm soapy water and rubbed it a little bit and the label and glue usually comes off because it's a smooth, non-porous surface. I also put it through the dishwasher, okay, so one of the first things My first tip is you need to prepare the glass so it's ready for

paint

ing and I'll show you how to do that. This is alcohol. I put it in a spray bottle and I like to wet it a lot with alcohol.

It's going to remove grease and stains and things like that and I'm going to start with a shiny clean surface, so we're going to keep it up until we've finished the whole jar while the jar is drying. I want to talk about the type of

paint

that we use on the glass and it's

chalk

paint. When

chalk

paint dries it has a very matte powdery appearance and has a little bit of texture to it and that little bit of texture helps. to adhere well to the glass and when the paint is dry and when we put the napkin down it's that little bit of texture that helps the napkin adhere better to the glass, so I use Rust-oleum chalk paint, it's a little thinner . chalk paint, which I think is a good place to start if you haven't made any glasses or bottles.

When you start to get a little further, you can think about making a thicker paint and learning how to do it with a brush, but we're going to start a little simpler. I want you to be able to make a jar right away so that the chalk paint has a thickener, so when you buy it you want to stir it really, really well and mix it well, now what? What I do is a little tip when I open the can. I fill a bunch of these little containers that last me maybe four or five little projects and then I can put them in the dishwasher or whatever and then I have another one, that's it. ready and it's fresh and by doing this I don't have to keep opening that can too so this is a very good tip.
Okay, now that we have our chalk paint, let's move on to how we apply it, like I said. We're not going to start with the brush, brushes can leave these frustrating brush marks and then you have to go in and sand it and since we're just starting out, we're going to avoid all that, so what are we going to do? the use is a sponge launcher, it looks like this, you can get them at Dollar Tree Housing. Michaels has them. I usually buy them on Amazon. I receive a large bag. They come in different sizes. The ones I buy are actually a game I make.
Use these, but I mostly use this size. Okay, so let's open up our painting. I'm going to show you how to put it with the launcher. Okay, here we go, so let's dip the launcher into the paint like this, not too. too much and we're going to take the jar in our hand and we're going to start throwing the paint just like that. The nice thing about using a launcher is that I can go over it and I can get a nice even coverage. That's another thing about chalk paint that makes it so good is that it is a thicker paint and therefore provides good coverage, but even though it does provide good coverage, I will say that you will probably want to apply two coats of paint.
Anyway, okay, I hope art can get this so you can see how I'm mixing all the paint together like that and I can make a really good even coverage, so I actually have one of these ready. I'm going to put this one aside and save it for later. The first layer of paint is dry. I actually did this a couple of days ago and I'll tell you why while I put on my second coat. One thing I've learned about decoupage is that you have to be patient, the drier things dry, the better the results will be.
I'm not the most patient person in the world, so what I do is next to my study. my laundry room and while I'm doing projects I put them in there at different stages so this way there's enough drying time and I'll get really good results and that applies not only to making jars but a lot of other things but when you think about The jars The jars are not a porous surface so you can expect it to not dry right away and it will take a little longer so if you are patient what you should do is wait a couple more days. here is my jar i have two coats and it is completely dry so now the fun part we are going to choose a napkin so i went to zippy designs and said i need some

napkins

for some jars and they said here are some florals . and I'm like, oh my gosh, how am I going to pick one?
There are so many beautiful floral

napkins

that Dippies has, look how pretty it is, you can go to their website which is www.dippies.com, check out what they have. and before i forget, vips also has a facebook and instagram page and you can follow them both and i post my stuff on both pages. Okay, they are all very pretty, but in the end I went with these two, so I couldn't decide. I couldn't really make up my mind, but I finally said, "Okay, I'm going to do this one, but I think I'm going to do that one on the back, but let's do the front first, okay, so we'll put them there and what." What I'm going to do now is called border embellishing or smoothing.
I'm going to show you how to do it because when you do that and you put it in the jar, the edges blend beautifully into the paint, okay, it's not difficult. I'm going to show you here is my napkin, I already used one of the squares, I'm just going to need another one to see, I can make two more jars and we're just going to cut before separating the layers because it's always easier to cut a napkin before making that, so you might be wondering: what does he mean by cutting the layers? The napkins have one or two layers under the top one, the top one is the printed one, it's thin here, you can see it's the one we use for decoupage.
Now how we separate the napkin is very simple, you take a little bit, just a little bit of mod podge, put it on your fingers and just press like this, look, I took out both pieces, tada, look how cute, okay, so how do I do it? do we decorate? the edge well there's two different ways you can do it, I have to close I don't want to spill it and that's with water, water, regular water and a brush, you can dip the brush in the water and just follow the edge. napkin like this the water is now weakening the napkin and I can just tear it like this it's not difficult at all okay do the side so I have something else that I use um you don't have to have it because this works well um I use it because I do a lot of decoupage so I found it very, very useful, okay, here I'll show you, okay, here it's called a water brush, it has a little tube that holds water, I don't know.
If you can see it and at the bottom there's a little brush that the water goes through and comes out of the brush so I'm doing the same thing but I don't have to dive so it just goes on and on and it just keeps on chopping oh it's pretty similar to the one I already made and now we're ready to put it on the glass, okay, so we'll push it to the side. I'm going to put it there because I do. I don't want that to spill now, the next thing I do is take out my box of rice.
This is just a bag of rice and what you can do is make a little indentation like a cradle and then when you're doing your decoupage, you can put it like this and it won't roll all over the table and God forbid it lands on the floor like this. This is really, really good advice, another tip that I love every time you do something great. So, okay, so let's grab our napkin, which is here. I hope Bart understands. Here is my mod podge. I need a brush and I'm going to need it too. If you are a beginner, I don't want you to do it. skip this and give me a second here, you're going to need a piece of plastic wrap or plastic wrap, um, they're called different things, okay, so I'm going to open up my jar of mod podge and I'm going to figure out where I want a couple to be. of little pieces in there, um, I think I like it like this, what do you think is good?
And what I'm going to do is put Mod Podge on it. the jar and I want to make sure I've put enough so that the napkin has glue under it, if you don't have glue under it, you're going to have to go back and put some in there, okay? so you're going to be very gentle, just fold it like this, okay, now we're going to do the same thing on the other side, I'm just going to turn it over like this, you're okay, you know? you really want to, you can start even with a smaller piece, um, but I think you can do this right and then make sure you get it and then you're just going to flip it down and take your brush and very lightly get everything. the edges down like this now one more thing I want you to do let me turn this over and that is to use the cling film plastic wrap and you put it on top and then you very gently smooth the napkin out with your fingers so what I'm doing it's the glue underneath and I'm pushing it out and I'm also smoothing out the napkin because I really don't want to have wrinkles or as few wrinkles as possible so it looks pretty good now I'm going to remove the saran wrap now be very careful when you lift it up like this and make sure the napkin doesn't lift up you say don't rush if the napkin lifts up just put the cling film on it again and choose another place, okay, let's do it here very gently, you know, not too slow, but yeah slow enough and let's see, okay, I have a little phrase here, but okay, I'm just going to take my brush and I'm going to soften it a little bit and let's take a look.
I hope the art looks like that, how pretty it is and seeing how the embellished border blends in so beautifully I love it okay, you know what I am? I'm going to do, I'm going to wait for this to dry and when I come back I'm going to put the other one on the other side so you can see what it looks like. Okay, that side is all dry with the pretty roses and now. I'm going to put the other napkin down, I already declared it, so I'm ready to go. I'm going to take the mod podge, put it on my brush and brush it right over the bottle just like that.
I'll make sure there is enough in the bottle so that there is glue under the entire piece of napkin. I'm just going to brush it very lightly, so just the edges, then I'll turn it over. and we're going to do exactly the same thing, just put enough mod podge in there so that there's glue under the napkin, okay, same thing, just very lightly do all the edges with the brush, now we're going to go back again and I'm going to use saran wrap to soften it but also mod podge makes the napkin weak and brittle so it also protects the napkin.
Okay, let's take a look at a little stain there, everything went well, remove it and it looks. Very, very pretty watercolor flowers. I really like this napkin. It gives it a completely different look than the other side. Now I have two different ways to put this. Beautiful. Well, now a friend of mine is so smart that she showed it to me. jars and she did this paint on top and I really liked it so I'm going to do that instead of putting twine or ribbon around it and I put the paint, the white chalk up to the top so this painting is going to be very well on top of the chalk paint.
I choose two colors, pink and grapefruit. I love them together, so I'm going to start with the lightest color, which is that light pink. I got these paints, these little bottles that I get them from. Michael's and they usually have a pretty good selection so if you go there and you're looking for specific colors just check out what they have so this will work out well I like it and now I'm going to think about putting some of that grapefruit in and, oop, got a little sloppy there, but that's okay, I'll be able to go in and clean it up with a little more white chalk paint, so I'll move on. around and it will probably take me a little while to get it exactly how I want but I really like the idea of coloring the top of the jar look how cute I love it okay so now we'll continue with When sealing the jar you still have to put a sealant on top to protect the paint and protect the napkin.
This is one of the ones I like, it's from dora clear and it's a brush with little odor, matte, has no shine and is great for taking photos. The glitter is very bright so it dependswhatever you want. I use the matte a lot because again, I like to take pictures of my project, so I just apply the sealers, take my brush and go over the whole jar, it's very thin, the clear door is very easy to work with, just keep going over it until Whatever you achieve You've probably covered everything and of course you can go back in and apply a couple more coats.
It really does a good job, so of course we're going to set it aside to dry and I'm going to show you another sealer that you can use, which is Krylon, it's called clear polish and it has a lot of smell. You want to do it outside. I'm done with the jar, this is the one I just made, there's the front and the back is very pretty and I made some others with tulips and daffodils. They are absolutely beautiful, perfect for spring. Add some fresh flowers to this. It would be a great gift. Think Easter, Mother's Day, birthday, you know what to do.
You should make a bunch of these and you should also join my group page which runs alongside my Youtube channel, diy decoupage with joe marie domino. I hope you give us the go-ahead. I want to thank Art, he does a great job. Thanks for watching
