Debunking MatPat's Hollow Knight Theory

Feb 27, 2020
I am literally shaking and crying right now. I can't believe Matpat did this. There is nothing sacred in this world anymore. It is not a work of art free from the clutches of this man. Oh God. I can not do this. about the Canterbury Tales, what did Chaucer do to deserve this? I mean, the deathbed confession right at the end felt pretty contrived, but the tale of the Wife of Bath has given us a lovely insight into the role of women during the Late Middle Ages. He probably even thinks the Cameron is better written pathetic someone has to take on this monster someone has to tear up his fucking picture he gave me a yell thank you so game theorists finally put out a video of the all night story and the matt pat himself pronounced my name with his own two lips the caps the video is wrong the bag of moss is supposed to be in lower case i mean that is literally how i start every video but it's ok i'm still ok thanks to matt pat my original all the night lo video finally hit 1 million views and more importantly got over 1000 new followers on twitter so now even more people can read my reviews of each and every episode of King of the Hill.
debunking matpat s hollow knight theory
It's also great to see a video about the Hollow Night trend on YouTube. this community has really come a long way, but as great as Matt Paths is, the

theory

is pretty bad now. I may not have 11 million subscribers like Matt Pat and I know I've never given a copy of Undertale to the Pope, but I did. I sent the Dali Lama a copy of my Rick and Morty spec script and I'm something of a theorist myself so I think I'm qualified to respond to this new video and I know this isn't some kind of deleted video.

More Interesting Facts About,

debunking matpat s hollow knight theory...

I am already mortal enemies with Vaati Vidya and Edie Mouse. I don't need a third YouTuber coming after me, even if Matt Bat has defiled the sanctity of our ghost. It is completely terrible and abominable. video ok here's some context if you're just joining the whole night. The community reaction to this new video has been quite negative, mainly because there are a lot of perceived flaws in the

theory

, as a result there are some people saying the entire fanbase of the night is toxic and yes maybe my La initial reaction to math has video that could be perceived as rude, but you have to understand that being a jerk is just part of my suit online.
debunking matpat s hollow knight theory
It's a completely original and clever concept. I know, but overall, I don't think this community is too toxic. Some of us are a little defensive about lore, that's all, but it's reporting to remember that, at the end of the day, Matt Pat is just a guy who wanted to talk about Halle Knight and I have nothing against it. an excuse to talk about this game even more that being said i think it's time to break out the propane and propane accessories boys and girls because we are about to burn this theory so if you haven't seen the theorist video of the game however, I recommend you check it out.
debunking matpat s hollow knight theory
I'm going to go through all of Matt Pat's arguments, but I'm not going to play the entire video, so you'll have to watch it yourself. If you want the full context, then you can watch this video. and come to your own conclusion about the tradition of the Knights of Halle. The issue at issue here has to do with the nature of the night and the whereabouts of the pale king. Matt Pats' theory is that the

knight

is actually the reincarnated Pale King. We are supposed to be just one more. of those failed experiments except I don't think that's the case here if you stop and dig through the massive amounts of secret lore hidden in this game I think we're not just some random nobody we are in fact royalty King the king actually, I think in Hollow Nights we're playing as The Pale King.
This is not a new theory, it's been around for a while, but I've never talked about it here on this channel. There are several problems with this. The biggest theory being the lack of evidence, much of the evidence that

matpat

will present in this video can be interpreted in a way that makes much more sense when put in a different context, secondly, there is evidence that contradicts this theory, you can do many small holes. in a pat timeline here and some bigger ones too with the biggest hole you would literally see the night with the pale King in the same room but i'm getting ahead of it let's start with carpet paths first argument the higher beings tablets in the passage of the King, which begin with the phrase higher beings, these words are only for you, these tablets are very mysterious and I don't think there is a consensus on what they mean, one theory that I see a lot is that these tablets were left here for the vessels as a way to teach them how to focus the soul, but then why did the pale king leave a tablet of wisdom like this in the agent's basin or howling cliffs?
They contain no information that would be pertinent to them and some of these tablets appear to predate the creation of the vessels another theory is that the tablets are clothed for insects granted higher thought through the pale beacon of the Kings the problem with that theory is that the tablets teach how to focus the soul which doesn't seem like something regular bugs can do, at least not easily personally. I think this explanation is the correct one, but my thoughts on it are super speculative. I've linked a document below if you'd like to check it out, so yeah. these tablets are quite mysterious, but for Matt Pat's plot, all that really matters is the fact that the

knight

can read them despite the fact that they are said to be intended only for higher beings.

matpat

explains that higher beings are divine creatures by mentioning the reddit post AMA and Kings soul charm description I agree with Matt here, he then mentions that pretty much only higher beings can manipulate the soul, tablet even says a quote , you will accomplish feats others can only dream of again separating soul users like our Knight from almost every other creature we encounter throughout this game now Matt Pat says almost every other creature so I can't say that be wrong, but there are examples of creatures that can manipulate souls that are not higher beings, two examples of this would be snail shamans and soul shrine scholars, the snail shaman gives the knight the vengeful spirit amulet and can be found another soul spell near another shaman in the Overgrown Upper Mound Being tablet in Kings Pass teaches the horse lero how to focus the soul.
We see the word focus again on the ancient mound where there is a whispering root that gives the dream nail a spiral focus. I believe this refers to how the shaman can focus the soul. cast spells like night the word spiral probably refers to the spiral of the snail shell worn by the shaman now the nature of snail shamans is a bit sketchy apparently void bound somehow but i don't think they are higher beings However, the soul shrine bugs are definitely not higher beings, they were able to learn to manipulate the soul through diligent practice and study, but as a result, their minds have begun to swell. a pain, so not really an ideal situation in the soul sanctuary, there is a lord tablet that also mentions his desire to achieve pure focus and while they may not have been completely successful, these mistakes have proven that they were capable of soul manipulation and the specific the focus skill that the knight learns from the knowledge tablet is not specific only to this vessel during the pure fight against the vessel all night he uses a move that is described in the code of the I play as a focus ability so this ability doesn't seem to separate the knight from the other vessels but ultimately I don't think this really hurts the point matpat is trying to make the knight a higher being so that we are not only reading reserve d tablets for higher beings, but are also using skills reserved for the divine creatures of the world on par with the Pale King, is his really ena as if we were just a failed experiment thrown into the depths of this world?
I think it's possible that the knight is a superior being in some way, but that doesn't mean that the knight has to be a reincarnation of the pale king, the knight, the

hollow

knight and the other vessels are descendants of the pale king and white queen , there is much evidence for this is the white lady who literally calls the night her spawn the god-born and empty line of the birthplace scene alludes to the vessels that are born from the white lady and the pale King but are later corrupted by the void and there is the fact that the pale king in white's queen had a union in quotes.
I don't think matpat is arguing against this point, but calling the knight a failed experiment might lead people to believe that the vessels really aren't the biological pale kings c The kids concede that Grim calls this night a ship, but this possibly just refers to how the vessels are a combination of the spawn of higher beings mixed with the influence of the void. Another great evidence of this is the fact that the achievement you get for defeating the

hollow

night with Hornet by your side is called Sealed Brothers this confirms that the knight and Hornet are brothers and we know how horny the Pale King's daughter is since the cunning dimensions that the Pale King had sex with Hera the Beast not only strengthens the argument that the ships were literal sons of the Pale King, but also confirms that the knight specifically is a son of the Pale King, which, by the way, disproves the whole theory so I guess we could end the video now as I was saying that being the literal children of two higher beings would suggest that the knight and all the other vessels are also higher beings this is hinted at for the hollow knight at least I In the hunter journal entry for the pure vessel it mentions that it has a holy shell, so I don't think this attribute separates the knight as unique in comparison with the other containers.
This is an argument you will hear me use a lot. in this video many of the connections that matpat makes between the knight and the pale king can be explained by remembering that the knight is the son of the pale king, the reason we have to interpret it this way is because the game explicitly tells us that the knight is the pale king's boy well there really is nothing to tell us they are the same person after this argument matpat brings up the beginning of the game the elegy of how honest matpat mentions for the first time that the poem itself is not about about the hollow nest but is instead about the pale king you don't know when you start the game but this poem is about the pale king so this poem is called an elegy because of how honest but the poem itself seems be addressed to one person, so it is not exaggerated.
I understand that the poem is actually talking about The Pale King Halla nest is the pale Kingdom of Kings and all that holiness offered travelers was due to The Pale King the two are so closely intertwined that the poem pretty much says the same regardless of whether it is addressed to the personified version of Halla's nest or the Pale King's map hat and then explains what the poem means when it says that the pale king tamed wild souls and redeemed base instincts at the beginning of the story of the game, all the bugs were basically a hive mind controlled by the glow moth god The Pale King was the one who expanded the minds of the bugs giving them individuality and sapiens showing them as the poem says a world they had never really dreamed there is no evidence of that the glows control as widespread before the arrival of the Pale Kings.
I'm not saying it's impossible, but another possibility is that the insects didn't have individuality or sapiens because they lived in a Wasteland similar to what we see out of how honest those insects don't have minds as it would be a weakness in nature Bowen The King Pale Appeared established a kingdom and expanded the minds of these insects also caught the attention of the moth tribe who at the time worshiped the glow, but they ended up eating her and removing her from their memory, causing her to be sealed away. it's suppressing nature suppressed nature distorts us tormented by this implies infection is a byproduct of the glow being sealed this makes more sense to me than the glow that already has bugs enslaved in a hive mind and another Pale King just walked in and them saved.
I mean, if you look at what's happening in this animation, it doesn't really make sense, right? If the pale king can cure an infection like this, what's the point of all the stuff that happens later? With the pots, it's also important to note that this isn't just a poem about the Pale King, it's addressed to the Pale King, your name, the challenge you met, and then what do we see on the screen? one thing if the poem were only about The Pale King, but the fact that it is addressed to him only a fewseconds before we see our character makes it seem like the designers are drawing a parallel between this king of legend and our first screen appearance we are the you in that poem, except there is a completely different scene between this poem and when we see to the knight by this logic, this means that the hollow knight is the pale king.
I mean, technically we seize the moments after this poem. the principle still applies, but even if the intro scene with the knight came right after the poem, I still wouldn't find it very convincing. I mean we are entering the sacred nest and the poem talks about the sacred nest or at least the person who built it, so why do the nine have to be taken into account in this? Let's move on to the bugger, there are plenty of places you can look to find information on the Pale King, the bugger isn't one of them, as you'll see, I don't think Matt Pat's interpretations of the buggers' dialogue make any sense. .
The map argues that the older bugs' dialogue about dreams hints that the knight is the pale king, the use of the word dreams is important since at the beginning of the game, not knowing the lore of this world, we all assume it's just our knight chasing the dream of wealth or fame, just like the big bug says, but at the end of the game we get an item called the dream nail, which is the way we unlock the memories of the past and ultimately Instance, we defeat the glow inside the hollow knight's mind. It is also the tool that allows us to find the king's pale white palace.
It is a place that is literally hidden. in dreams, as the old bug says, we're looking for our dreams in a perhaps very literal sense, which is especially true if we're playing as The Pale King, night goes many different places in the dream world, so I don't know what makes The White Palace so special. This interpretation also ignores the rest of Elder Bugs' dialogue. the radiance the radiance is an infection that begins by plaguing an insect's dreams until its will becomes a slave, in fact the achievement unlocked by beating the radiance is called dream no more so i think this line makes a lot more sense if we interpret it as a warning about the glow if we interpret those extra lines using Matt Pat's reading, then the other bug is telling us not to go to the white palace. commenting that maybe dreams aren't such bad things after all i think this just shows how the knight has restored hope and the old bug similar to how halla nest restores hope or som something like that next point Matt Pat's has to do with major bug dialogue if you initially ignore him at the start of the game and then come back he'll mention that he thought he saw a ghost if in fact we are The Pale King returning to a land we once left we would in fact be a ghost from the past it's another potentially very clever plan words I appreciated I'm reading too much into this maybe but again this is clearly a team that has a literary flair and likes it makes you really think about words that they are using so Matt Pat is reading too much into this right now to be fair the word ghost might actually be hinting at the true nature of the Knights the word ghost Ghost Ra is only used nine other times in the entire game. which are from Hornet when he talks to the knight Hornet calls the knight a ghost because he is the dead shell of a son of the pale king and the white lady that has been hollowed out and animated by the void, so perhaps the dialogue of the older insects may be referring to that but It's until you think this is just a common expression the older bug is wearing the next part of the map hats video has to do with how the gentleman is recognized by a few different people as being related to the king first is the white queen one of his interactions with the white queen, aka the queen, she directly tells the knight that he is more than just a vessel.
I feel like I am once again in the presence of my beloved Worm Worm, being another name for the Pale King, this dialog only appears within a certain context where matpat fails to mention that this dialog is triggered after the knight picks up the amulet from the king's soul This amulet is described as the symbol of a union between two higher beings and pieces of this amulet can be found in the possession of both the white queen and the pale kings. corpse so part of this enchantment literally came from the pale king which means it's no surprise that the white lady thinks of him when the knight has it and only when the knight has it also when talking to the white lady with th The amulet from the gloomy child fully updated he says it's a success then for scarlet heart and irony of using my spawn to grow he literally calls a knight his spawn so i don't think the knight is supposed to be your Husband, now don't. dont get me wrong im on kinky shit but even i think thats too much man shes the only one who gets real vibes from the player character white defender one of the pale kings the main five knights has a date too of interesting dialogue so it's two of the closest relatives of the Kings remembering their dearly departed when they interact with us you don't need to have the soul of the Kings to fight the white defender but notice how this line of dialogue is toned down what the white queen said, the white defender says the the knight reminds him of the King of the Vale, which makes sense considering the fact that the knight is the son of the pale King Matt, then he mentions the royal servants and how they bow to the knight, ten out of ten royal servants cannot be wrong. royalty plain and simple, some people in the comments section argue that they only bow if the knight is Kings branded but that's not true, they bow even though this is an argument I've seen a lot from people who don't agree with matpat that most of the characters who remember the pale King when looking at the knight can be explained via the King mark, but you can get to the white defender and white Palace without the King mark as far as I know , the only character confirmed to explicitly mistake the night for The Pale King due to the Kings brand being eternal.
I'm Alisha, but it doesn't really matter that the night doesn't have the Kings brand because it can still be argued that the royal servants bow down because the night is related to the pale king, there are statues of the hollow knight in the white palace, after all , which could mean they revered the vessels as well as the Pale King, but there are many questions surrounding the royal servants if you dream of nailing the m they seem to be talking to the pale king they mentioned things like we will wait king and king their troubles us they brought another detail worth mentioning is that the royal servants essentially explode when killed leaving no corpse behind, so what should we make of this it seems to me that these critters don't know that the pale king is dead and are waiting for take some kind of action but they are worried about his state of mind the dream without dialogue does not imply that they recognize the knight as The Pale King who has finally returned , but again there's something weird going on with these guys, they seem to be living in the past and not really in a lucid state of mind, so yeah I think there's a lot of mystery surrounding these guys, but to summarize this section.
I still agree with Matt Pat's point here that the knight is royalty, but again that doesn't help prove this reincarnation theory because we know the knight is royalty because he is the pale child of Kings, matpat. he then goes into a discussion about how the Pale King went from his first worm form to his second insect form. This occurred at the edge of the realm, where the corpse of the worm can still be found. A fat caterpillar named Bard Dune explains that when worms die, he not only dies but actually transforms into something else soap or dune nose The Pale King spawned from the worm, he clearly says that the kingdom is his doing, but this line is too much transformation seems to imply that the death of the Pale King would only lead to yet another form. we think team cherry put this line here for no reason i think bard unite is not saying more transformation as there will be another transformation he is saying dying a worm is more like transformation now is there something in the game ? that says that the pale king may or may not transform a second time, well no, but we don't really have any proof that the Pill King transformed into a third form, let's look at the egg that the pale king hatched from. of the worm Page 111 of The Wanderers Journal discusses this transition.
What happened to the worm from there is a mystery. He doesn't appear to have died there, so perhaps he shed his gigantic form and became something else entirely in the depths of the corpse's maw. a pale broken egg of some kind hints at such a rebirth, this implies that the pale king hatched within the worm's discarded shell, so how exactly does the pale king's third form materialize? We find his corpse on the throne but we can't get into it to check if there's another egg somewhere, there's the egg on the right hand side of the room, but that doesn't really look like something a creature would hatch from, probably even it was made before the pale King's second form died as it seems to be mounted from his perspective but matpat has his own theory on all of this so let's postpone this discussion for now after we talk about how the pale key could have a third As matpat begins to explain what the void consists of, where it is found and how it works, he draws our attention to the tablet of the Lord found in the workshop of the pale Kings.
This tablet explains that the void opposes the Pale King, but that void contains a power to negate time itself. This quote is interesting based on the clues in that work room, as well as the in-game bestiary, we know that the pale king was using the void to create soldiers, the king's molds, and the wing molds that populate his white palace. , we also know that he was using a vacuum to create the vessels. he intended to trap the vessels of infection as the Hollow Knight, which would also include our character, but this quote refers to him using the void for another purpose, a third purpose, not fighting the glow, not protecting his castle, but to fight against time itself, he wants to use the void to achieve eternal life for himself for his kingdom, it's not clear, but once again he lends credence to the idea that in his next life he would choose to be reborn as a creature based on the vacuum. nature one that is not subject to the restrictions of time one like our Knight I somewhat agree with this, but not really.
I think the purpose of nine times refers to the glow that the pale king is trying to stop so he can hold his kingdom forever, there are various bits of dialogue to look at here, both Hornet and the hive queen Vespa prefer holla nest as if were it in perpetuation or in other words frozen in time the modem in calls holla nest a world forever immutable both Hornet and the masked baker mentioned that the realm is in stasis and then we have the dialogue that directly connects all of this with the hollow Knight the monuments to the hollow Knight and the dreamers mentioned that through his actions Halla nests the last eternal the lore title in the throne room of the white palace says eternity and promise and burden and cursed progeny this line probably reads refer to how the pale king planned to maintain his kingdom forever by somehow cursing his descendants and tha It is exactly what the whole Tonight, Hornet describes him as our birth cursed brother and in Hornet hasn't dreamed any dialogue during the green road bite that says only pity for the cursed species of him.
All this is done to contain the glare. the glow. alluded to as a force of nature by bar dune moss profits and hive queen vespa the glow is the inevitable dawn that will eventually break on the horizon now the deaf notes are not necessarily canon but there are also deaf notes explaining that the kingdom is in stasis and that the events of the night of hallowing take place over one long night, so to sum up the denial timeline of the tablet in the pale king's workshop, it probably refers to how the pale king planned creating a vessel that could be used to negate the coming of the glow by placing all of the void in some sort of stasis nothing is to imply that the pale king was doing this to himself i would argue that the void could never give the pocong everlasting life the void is the power of posing so it would probably kill him if he tried to merge with him after all we know the vessels were killed by the void since the white lady m mentions that the gentlemanhe died in the birthplace where he was born making this connection even more interesting o the eggs just outside the throne room of the pale king is a tablet housed within a black egg a tablet that tells of the ancient worm becoming king pale seems to suggest that this egg here is where version 1.0 of the pale king was born in his enhanced form so to speak and now look at the birthplace of our night in the abyss a similar black egg could it be that we are version 2.0 transformed a again?
I don't think the sentence the worm becomes a beacon is talking about the transformation of the pale kings I think the sentence is about how the pale king expanded the minds of the insects, basically the pale king was able to bestow insect sapiens through his beacon, but we don't really have much information on this if I had to guess. I would say it could be some kind of metaphysical power. The word beacon is used only one other time in the entire game and that is for the godseeker. She says it's even been a long time since we left.
We feel the glow of the power of God that is on this throne. over this realm, that lingering power alone was speaking enough to bring us to the holy nest, how bright it must have been to the deadly insects that stood before it, so the radiance of the pale power of God of Kings acted like a beacon for god seekers. Is this the same concept? as the beacon mentioned in the matpat lore tablet seems to think the beacon is another name for the smaller form of the pale kings which I suppose is possible but it's a bit of an odd name when I see this I don't really think in this I am a bit confused by Matt Pat's next point, as I said before there is evidence to suggest that the egg from which the pale king hatched is found in the discarded shell at the edge of the kingdom here Matt Pat is arguing that the egg in the throne room is what the pale king hatched from what is confusing to me is that earlier in the video it is implied that the discarded shell egg was what the pale king hatched from, it is clearly established in the lore of that the king has the ability to transform, in fact, the paleking form is actually his version 2.0.
I don't know if there was some miscommunication between Matt Pat and one of his editors or if there was a script change or something, but I thought I'd point that out because it's weird that the video picks it up. correct initially, but then contradicted a few minutes later, so it seems unlikely that the pale king hatched from the egg in the throne room, so what exactly is going on with this egg? I honestly don't know, there are some other eggs in the game that seem to store information similar to this the egg-like things found in the ancient basin of Kings Pass and the black egg are tablets of wisdom we also know that the arcane eggs were used to store information somehow this egg is similar to those eggs and its creation and design, on the other hand the floor here is similar to the floor found in the black egg so maybe it's related to that regardless, it seems quite unlikely that the pale king hatched from this egg given that the one-ders diary.
It's anything but flat out saying it hatched from the egg in the discarded shell, finally Matt Peck questions whether or not King's third pale form hatched from this egg in the abyss, the one hour night presumably hatched from this is where things really get they go off the rails, remember how I mentioned earlier that the night and The Pale King appear in the same room at one point well that happens in a scene that can be triggered after the knight hits his own reflection in this egg with the dream nail in this sequence the knight climbs to the top of the chasm when they get there they see the pale King leaving along with a younger version of the hollow Knight looking back before the knight plunges into darkness.
After this scene, the old charm of the King. becomes the Void Heart, an amulet needed to unlock all four of the game's alternate endings. This scene is arguably one of the biggest moments in the game showing the Pale King at one of his lowest points choosing to sacrifice his children to the void in order to create a pure vessel, there is a lot of dialogue and symbolism surrounding this event and none of it they suggest the pale king to become a knight let's look at the king so again this amulet symbolizes the union between two higher beings in other words this amulet represents the children of the pale king when he talks to the white lady with this amulet , she will tell the knight to visit that place where he was born, where he died, where it all began, she is referring to an area in the abyss described as a birthplace by the king's soul amulet in this place the knight finds his place of birth an egg connected to empty tendrils after experiencing the birthplace scene the soul of the king becomes the empty heart this is a symbol of the children of the pale king and the white lady corrupted by the void itself that is what the pale King means when he says worm soul root soul heart of the void the knight acquiring the void heart symbolizes how he has come to terms with his past, in fact, the achievement what you get after the cut scene strongly implies that it is a scene from the past, the void achievement says remember the past and bridge the abyss, the white queen also comments on this saying, he has truly been transformed by the revelations he found in summary, this scene shows a memory of the night he was thrown into the abyss by the pale king, so in other words, it is completely impossible for the pale king to hatch if what we see here is a memory. and as the achievement said the scene allows the knight to remember his past now matpat didn't mention this scene at all in his video, however he left a pinned comment that addresses the issue, he says he cut out the part talking about this scene from the video both because of time and because it was too complicated for the tone he was going for in the video for his first point videos on YouTube can be much longer than 20 minutes so that's no excuse in my opinion I get it.
Game Theorist is a great channel with employee schedules, semi-annual office blood rituals, low toner, things I don't have to worry about, but if your format forces you to remove crucial information from your videos that try to provide arguments persuasive. so he needs to make some modifications to his second point. I agree that it complicates things, especially considering that it ruins your entire video if you can't counter it, but it's not a big deal since matpat addressed the counter argument in this pin for comment, so let's see what he has first, he says the king pale is transparent in this scene, which could hint that he's not really there.
I have no idea what matpat is talking about here. The pale king has a glow around him. the scene, but the pale king has been described as a light or emitting a light for being the archive tablets the throne room tablets the last deer and eternally Malita, so the transparency argument is discredited by having g eyes then matpat says that because the birthplace scene is a dream sequence, technically anything is possible, which I mean, sure anything is possible. Lots of different ways to interpret something, but the best interpretations are the ones that align with what we know about the rest of the games Sir, if we assume this is the knight who remembers his own past as strongly implied by the achievement message, then there is.
There really isn't a problem with this scene, but if we think that Pell King later becomes the knight, then this whole scene becomes a complete mess. This is the moment when the knight has a big revelation about his true nature. the knight who is the pale king would you think this moment would at least hint at it and not completely contradict it why does this scene exist what is the point of this? The weight of this whole scene is neutralized by Mat Pat's theory, it no longer becomes an emotional moment showing how the knight was discarded like the thousands of other ships, but rather the scene becomes an eyesore, a loose end for a theory that sounds cool on the surface but doesn't resonate with what we see in game but i've been talking for too long let's go back to matpat then he mentions that the nursery song in the white palace is the same song we hear where the gentleman follows. to his shadow he then mentions the diary entry for the shadow the description of these shadows says echo of a past life each of us leaves an imprint of something when we die a stain on the world so the sound that accompanies our past life of Knight matches the same sound from a nursery located inside the pale king's palace, the existence of a connection between our knight and the pale king seems undeniable, I think there is a much better interpretation for this after the pale king chose the hall and I as the vessel that the Hollow Knight probably lived in the white palace, we even see this is the case in the scene of the path of sorrow, so it is likely that the Hollow Knight was kept in this cradle, the Dutch it is, of course, similar to the knight. and that he is a child of the pale king and the white queen and also has a similar overtone to the knight connecting this nursery rhyme with the pale king to say that he became a creature of the void is a much bigger leap and also has another problem in that i'll get into it shortly but first let me play another section of the matt pats video it's almost like the King lays the groundwork for him to be reborn as void died he hatched from the black egg and the abyss was brought back to the palace to be raised and eventually sent away from the realm to avoid succumbing to the infection only to be called back when he was older and when the Hollow Knight started to lose control ok let's take this piece by piece first matpat says the king made the gram A work for him to be reborn as a void.
There is no evidence of this. I'm guessing matpat is based on the denial time section of the workshop tablet, but again, I don't think tablet is referring to the pale desire to become King. a creature from the void then says the pale king died dammit actually i completely agree with matpat on this this calls for a celebration then he says the pale king was born to nullify himself from the black egg in the abyss i dont think that is the case, we see that the pale king's first transformation was from an egg inside the corpse of the worm, but for his second transformation, he somehow died in the white palace and turned into an egg bigger than his own body and then the egg was somehow transported. into the abyss despite the fact that the gateway to the abyss was now sealed in its pen for comment MadCat pointed out an issue which I think is valid he asked how exactly where the ships were even able to escape the abyss in the first place this has been a pretty big question in story from a while back on a reddit AMA team, Terry mentioned they weren't sure how it happened so yeah they're pretty useless as usual this issue may counter my argument here if there are multiple entries to the abyss, then of course they could return the egg there.
I still don't believe that explanation, but I have a theory about how the vessels escaped in the bottom right corner of the deep nest, there is an area that has clearly been influenced by the void and not far from there, we can see that several ships have been captured. by nas in her lair, so there could be some hidden passage between the abyss and the deep nest that the ships were able to navigate through the following map and it says that the Pale King was being taken back to the white palace to be raised, so, who exactly raised the pale king was the white queen?
So that's probably the silhouette of her in the chair, right? Does this mean that the white queen is in on the plan as well because if that's the case I have a few problems in the first place why doesn't she recognize the pill king right away if she literally raised him? Why does he call the night the spawn of him? find me did you seek my help or did the path lead you by chance to such a relevant place it is true true that you were expected you know maybe that is inaccurate true as you were expected pay attention to how the white queen speaks if she is waiting for a vessel to come and get her , but not one in particular, she says one like you was waiting, she's looking for any container, not a specific one, if she was in on the pill king's plan, why wouldn't she be looking for it? specifically and if she's not in the plan, what's the deal with her silhouette in her chair? matpat ends by saying that the pale king was sent away to avoid succumbing to the infection and then brought back when he was older.
I really have some problem with th is one section, but I have a broader problem with the theory that I would like to talk about according to the Hollow Knight game manual. The Pale King went into hiding when his kingdom fell to ruins. The relic seeker Lam mentions that the Pale King's palace disappeared without any sign of a fight and in The Wanderers Journal alma mentions thatit seems the pale king took the white palace and his court with him when he fled, so if matpat's theory is true, how does this information fit with tradition? it's the game manual it's just completely wrong and what's the problem with the white palace disappearing if the pale king didn't use it to hide then why even in the dream world how exactly did the pale king get out of the white palace did it have a stamp? in it, matpat doesn't really address any of this even though it's probably the most relevant information relating to what actually happened to the Pale King after he sealed himself to the Hollow Knight. cool that the pale king says when you dream you nail him he could be referring to how he sacrificed himself to become the knight and take on the infection himself the line is also used at the beginning of the birthplace memory so the first time What the pill king says is definitely referring to the creation of the containers, but I'm not against the phrase being recontextualized to mean something else.
I just don't think there's enough evidence to really prove that matpat then gives more evidence as to why the knight is a pale reincarnated. The king makes sense that the knight is a reincarnated pale king would explain how a faceless and nameless knight can so easily accept the king mark item that directly marks him as a king. I don't think that's the case. The king's brain is guarded by Hornet, which makes me think getting the mark itself isn't hard, but Hornet doesn't want others to reach it unless she can prove her strength as the knight, do we also have Hornet saying this when hints?
For the player to go to the edge of the realm, find the tomb and Ashe and the marquess grant one like you, one like you implies that recipients in general can receive the mark and that makes sense. The midwife also calls the King's mark a shining mark. of relationship which I interpret as saying that the bearer of the marks is a relationship to the Pale King plus the recipients are the children of the Pale King, so since he is dead, any one of them should be able to become the next king also matpat keeps referring to the knight and all night using masculine pronouns but in the game they are never given gender, in fact Hornet is called the gender boy just to indicate how the rest of the boys in pel Kings are genderless.
I assume matpat only uses masculine pronouns for convenience. but that's no excuse for missing the gender of these poor critters who haven't had enough, it would explain how, much like The Pale King, he snapped the critters out of their collective stupor during his lifetime or the night as you go . the game is doing the exact same thing waking up bugs from the infection and making them return to a life in the dirt promises to be fair the knight only saves two bugs from the infection sly and beretta and these two are very rare exceptions the knight is not able to curing any of the other infected bugs we see you'd think would be easier than fighting them and of course we can't forget if the knight can really get the bugs out of the infection so easily why can he?
Didn't we save Milah? Did we really fail him that much? He really deserved better. On top of that, Pilkington pulled the bugs out of the infection. Or that was the purpose of the vessel. It was the only way the pale king could deal with the infection. would explain how it looks like only you and the pale king wear the monarch wings, that's true, but monarch wings could probably be used by any ship, as long as they have a cape that monarch flies transform into and if all of that wasn't enough to convince you in the cut dialogue that game data was pulled if you dream you nailed the final boss V Hollow Knight himself will say this father doesn't get much more explicit than that ok so first of all this cuts dialogue so it really needs to be taken with salt now i'm guilty of doing this a lot myself and it's a bad habit i need to break second just because the hollow knight is thinking of his father that doesn't mean he thinks that the gentleman is her father love for her The father would probably be the only thought that the hall and I could have, so I would probably think that even if the gentleman was not there, look at the jellyfish in the The fog cannon or the flaps in the real channels, think of the bikers and the worm. respectively without being in the same room as them, the rest of the video is simply to recap the theory with an additional section discussing why the Pale King left how honestly he studies the void so that he can eventually be reborn with his power hatching in the abyss to be tended to. in the safety of the white palace and then being released to the lands beyond the filthy mouths a place where canonically bugs lose all their memories this self-exile for a period of years is probably for two reasons sons, one his own protection from the glare and two lose memory help him to be purely hollow no memory no desire no past life now he is an empty vessel so he should have come to that now he can be the one to face the hollow Knights place I really don't have any problem with this section I haven't mentioned already, other than it raises the question of how exactly the empty heart fits into everything this morning Na mentions several times that the knight needs to search for the deeper truth. and learns the tragedy of his own conception then praises the knight who is accepting the emptiness within himself there is nothing about accepting being the next reincarnation of The Pale King why is such an important part of the story being overlooked entirely for a different one? theme about the night coming to terms with a void within itself and that's really my biggest problem with this theory it just doesn't solidify with the lore you see in the game sure you could argue that the eldest of the bugger first at night it has a ghost because the night is literally The Pale King returning to the howling nest after years of self-exile.
It could be argued that the Pale King was playing a game of becoming a creature of the void and attempting to deny time and life. forever and you could probably even find a way to interpret the birthplace scene so it doesn't discredit the whole theory but all of this stuff really just feels like what the game says or feels like someone is looking too hard to justify their own theory Despite the evidence or lack thereof that you find in-game, I would now like to reiterate that my intent with this video is not to attack matpat. Please comment with someone else giving a detailed critique of your arguments originally written by someone if you don't know who is someone who has done a lot for this community by helping update the wiki to include details and sources for the lower sections and also helped me with my video revising my scripts, so he definitely has a great understanding of the story.
Seeing matpat show off his detailed rebuttal in a pinned comment is really cool and shows that map that he is open to criticism on his theories. so yeah those are just some of the thoughts i had on the mat pat video if you're a fan of matpat and you really didn't know howl lore and i go to this video i hope you can see why our community got a bit annoying this theory really is beyond saving even the pope couldn't resurrect him that's what the pope does well if you're a fan of mine or just holla Knight in general then I hope you've considered that matpat isn't trying to disrespecting this game or misleading people, it has been very receptive to criticism and you can tell this video clearly has a lot of love.
I mean fuck I wish my videos looked half as good as this one. Now I figured out how to use overlays in Sony Vegas. on this very well huh if you're not a fan of mine or holo night or mad pat then what the hell are you doing here? Why did you just watch this fucking video? showing that Hornet was made of a vacuum was just an accident; otherwise I take everything back so in conclusion I guess this is a very roundabout way of saying this but I guess the whole point I'm trying to make here is that Vaati vidya and any mouse. or a couple of motherfuckers
