DDNS - Dynamic DNS Explained
Apr 28, 2023What is DDNS? So that's what we're going to talk about in this video. Now DDNS stands for Dynamic Domain Name System. Now, I did a video earlier where I talked about DNS, and if you're not familiar with what DNS does, I recommend you watch that video as well, and you can find the video on my YouTube channel. But in this video I'm going to talk about
dynamic
DNS. Just a refresher on what DNS does, when you type a web address into your web browser, the DNS is the domain name that gets converted to an IP address. For example, if you type youtube.com in your web browser, the DNS server will search its database to find an IP address that matches that domain name, and when it finds the IP, it will convert the domain name to the IP address. . from the YouTube web server. In a DNS database, a domain name like youtube.com is mapped or linked to an IP address, and that IP address may not change. In other words, it must be a static IP because if the YouTube IP address changes to a new IP address, people will not be able to access the YouTube website because youtube.com is still connected to the old IP address.
If the IP address changes, DNS updates its database with the new IP address for youtube.com, so people can find YouTube. This might not sound like a big deal, but the problem is that DNS can take up to 24 hours to update its database with the new IP, and that's a problem because it means YouTube loses up to 24 hours worth of instances. until DNS does the update. And this is the main reason why websites, organizations and businesses use static IP addresses and not
dynamic
IP addresses. So DNS is used with static IP addresses, but dynamic DNS is used with dynamic IP addresses.A dynamic IP address is where an IP address gets an IP from a DHCP server and therefore the IP address changes frequently. Dynamic DNS is a service that allows you to access devices in your home, such as a computer, router, or security camera, and you can access them anywhere in the world, even if your IP address changes. Dynamic DNS is mainly used in homes because Internet services used in homes are given a dynamic IP and not a static IP. So let's do an example, let's say you are at work and then you want to access your home computer using Microsoft remote desktop.
You would open the remote control service from your work computer and then type your home IP address, then type the password, then connect. So you already knew your home IP address because you wrote it down or maybe memorized it, but since you have a home account with your Internet Service Provider, your IP address is dynamic and will change from time to time. changed without your knowledge, the next time you want to remotely access your home computer, you won't be able to because you're entering your old IP address and not your updated one. So this is where dynamic DNA comes into play.
Dynamic DNS allows you to access your home computer even if your IP address changes. This allows you to create a custom hostname, like 'myhomepc.
ddns
.org' or whatever, and then you can associate the hostname with your computer. If your home IP address changes, Dynamic DNS will update the new IP address and automatically assign it to your custom hostname. Therefore, Dynamic DNS will ensure that you always have access to your home computer, even if your IP address changes. For example, suppose you want to access your home computer again, but instead of entering your home IP address, you enter your own hostname that you created with dynamic DNS.So you type 'myhomepc.
ddns
.org' and then you are connected. It doesn't matter how many times your IP address changes, it doesn't matter because when you want to access a device in your home, you always use your personal hostname instead of the IP address. And with dynamic DNS, we'll always make sure the correct IP address is connected to your custom hostname. And if you're interested in getting a dynamic DNS service, there are several providers to choose from, some of which require you to pay, but some of which are also free. So I'll sit to the left of some of them in the description below this video and thanks for watching. If you have any copyright issue, please Contact
