Change In Using Pipe In Wicking Tubs, Ep 123

Jun 09, 2021
Good morning fellow gardeners, well we're back to doing another video on these absorbent

tubs

and I'm going to

change

a little bit about how we use the

pipe

in these

tubs

, there's nothing wrong with the way we always run three

pipe

s crosswise. It was just that you had six holes that you had to plug. We were putting a piece of ground cover over them to cover them, saving the ends. We're going to do this a little differently because I want to show you where they are. You're just building some tubs, you have time to cover them and I want to ask you to forgive me for something a couple three years ago, when I made this first video on

using

this pipe, I told you to use a six inch pipe and then run away. to buy a pipe and nobody handles a six inch pipe like they did here in southern Oklahoma, so I want you to forgive me for doing that, don't try to buy a six inch pipe, you don't have to have all six. inches, the only reason I was

using

a six-inch pipe was because we had tubs all over town with flowers that we would take water to and water, and in the summer when it was hot, we had to water twice a week. three times a week with this four inch because our flowers were four and five inches four and five feet long in these tubs and it was absorbing so much water that we couldn't keep them watered, so we came back for the next year and used six inches we put our hole at five inches we had more water and we got by and we only watered twice a week and we went back now and checked that where we used the trucker's bucket and we got by once a week now but I'm going to come back and show you how Build this absorbent tub with this French drain tube.

Go get yourself some four inch Lowe's, they have some ten foot pieces, they have hundred foot rolls, all these other tractor supply gardens, any of them. that these tractors these equipment dealers you know that uh what do I mean? I know it's uh what is it uh spline tractor what do you call them garden store farm stores farm stores thank you joyce farm stores so what do we do let's get you some. From this we are now going to cut this piece that is four feet and four inches long, that is what it will take to go around the bottom of this cube, we will cut you one that is four feet and four inches long, okay, so you are going to cut another piece 10 or 11 inches long, then I'll show you how to cover the ends.

More Interesting Facts About,

change in using pipe in wicking tubs ep 123...

We're going to do it a little bit differently instead of using all that ground cover that's there. I still advise you to buy some ground cover that is commercial quality. uh you can buy it at Lowe's, it has a 10 or 12 or 15 year warranty or you know, if you don't want to come buy it from me and I understand that if you live in some other state, you have to buy it. it's there at home, you don't need to pay freight for something, you take it home, we cut this fabric into 12 inch squares, 12 inch squares, what is it, then we pull it down the end we have now, I have zip ties here I put three zip ties together, let me see what I did with my other zip ties, I don't know what I did with them, yeah, here they are here, this is where I cut this fabric 12 inches square and this is where I take the tube and we're going to take it and We're going to slide it down over the end and close it.

You can put zip ties, tie three zip ties together and tie it there. You can put a rope around it. You can use tape around it or anything to close this so dirt can't get into your pipe. Now you have slots. Yes, I advise you to get the one with slots, it is not necessary because the water will go away. in and out of these ends, but that's the way you close them, it ends like this inside there and you just adjust it a little bit and use it to leave it, leave that ugly thing at the bottom just like that and It'll be okay, we'll do both ends the same way, but for the sake of time, I'm going to set this aside and get one where we've already covered both ends, so I'm going to put that to the side, I'm going to get this four foot four inch piece long and I'm going to curve it at the bottom.

Now I'm going to try to get these two ends to meet on the opposite side for my hole, my cry. The hole is here on this right side of my right hand and we're going to put them together on the left hand, so I'm going to turn this to the right. Here's the hole here between my knees and I'm going to go in there like this and push it together down into the bucket like this right now it's down there okay now I'm going to take this 11 inch piece that I put one piece on each end and we're going. to place it crosswise there, like this, look, that's 11 inches and that's enough. 10 inches long would work great, so that's the way I'm going to use the tubing.
Now you can still use the three crosses if that's what you want to do, you just have to close on six ends now instead of four, so we do this for all of you just to show you an easier way to do it. You have your pipe that you cut at 45 degrees. Right in that hole right there and you're ready to fill it with soil right there, like that, okay Richard, I'm ready for you to help me fill it, man, I'll hold the pipe, I use potting mix, not pots. soil now you want to know what a potting mix is made of, it is usually made of peat moss, pine bark and perlite, don't use vermiculite, it retains too much water, we must have a balance of air, water and food that goes for these plants and I am using fertilizer right now, we used to use berger, but as you know, I ordered 10 semi trailers, 10 loads of berger and never got a single one, we put it up around five or six. inches down there, let me put my fertilizer in and then Richard will help me go ahead and finish it, okay?
Remember that now we use half a cup of sharp, which is chicken poop, turkey feather. Now yes, if you can't find support, if you don't want to order it from us and we will send it to you. It costs 250 a pound or you can go to Walmart and buy tomato tone. It comes in a red and white bag. Oh, Richard, could you come over and get it? I, that tomato red jacket over there, will show you what it looks like. You can put half a cup of that in there the same way. Okay, we've put our nature.
We'll put our uh sharp there now. Let's put in our sea mineral, let me get the right seed mineral, that's lime, here's your seed mineral, here's okay, we use a quarter cup of this, thanks Richard, it's good to have good hips around you and I have some. Very good help, okay, this is a quarter of a cup of sea mineral. That's not sea salt, it's sea mineral. I know there is one called C90. It will probably work fine. I've never used it. It may work. be a little finer than this. I know that Redmond sea mineral, uh, has a lot of salt in it.
We tried using it because it's much cheaper than this, but we burned a lot of plants with it, so I left it. I'm not saying it's not good, I'm just saying I tried to use it, but using it as much as we did in this burned our plants, so we didn't use the Redmond sea mineral, uh, okay, so I have to do it. put an eighth of a cup of gypsum and lime and Epsom salts, okay, here's your gypsum, let's put an eighth of a cup of that and an eighth of a cup of our lime, this is garden, now lime, this is not loose. lime don't use slaked lime and burn your plants use a household lime or garden lime agricultural lime and then here's your Epsom salt.
Do your measurements have to be exact? No, it doesn't have to be really exact. You can tell me? You can say I'm guessing that's fine, they won't sue you for the deal or anything. This is Epsom salt that you have under your unit, under the bathroom sink in every house that you don't have. I need to ask myself for that, just use yours or you can go to the pharmacy and buy half, I don't know, it's about a half gallon container of milk, looks like a deal full of Epsom salt, pretty cheap, anyway, there they are our five five, uh. fertilizers are sustained line of sea mineral gypsum and Epsom salt, those are your five, you put them in the soil if you need a document on this, if you call any of the numbers, we will text one of these, Call us on a cell phone so we can return it to you.
Don't call us on the house phone. We need that cell phone so we can return it to you right now. If you can't find sustenance and don't want to ask for it, here's a tomato. tone, I know Walmart sells this, it's organic too like this other one and you can use it find it at Walmart and some of the other chain stores maybe, but it's good to use, yeah, you can use it on anything you want. to put it on those flowers, you know, it's a uh, where did you tell me what it is? It's a three four six.
It will work for you on anything. The only thing is that you will have to add some nitrogen if you use it on leafy greens because you need more nitrogen again. You know, instead of half the nitrogen that you have with ash, you need to put a little more nitrogen into it. I don't want to confuse you, but that's how it is. richard we are ready to fill this we are getting ready to have a red bucket ready to plant it doesn't really make any difference the only thing is a clear tub or a white tub algae will grow inside it that's the The only problem is using a white tub.
You know you can paint that thing blue. Thanks Richard. That's enough. What we need. Remember this is potting mix. It is not potting soil. Potting soil is cheaper but it is too tight and does not breathe. it absorbs too much water so we have to use potting mix. Did you repeat what you just said about algae? Yes, if you use a white tub or a clear tub, algae will grow inside it even in your water barrel. grows in that water, if you use a white tub, you'll have to paint that thing black or blue. I don't like black paint because black absorbs too much heat and will heat the water or soil too much. in the summer, but if you wear a blue one it won't make it not so hot and we'll come back and do one here in a little while, I mean the next video will probably be growing. in the bags, the grow bags, because I told you that they get hot in the summer, you can paint them white and it's okay to paint them, you know, you paint them dark and then you paint them white, you have it colored up to where the sun won.
It doesn't shine through and it allows algae to grow, so anything you can spray just to spray paint, we'll paint them and color them so you can see them, but yeah, paint your white tub black or blue and then give it a try. the return Go back with some white paint and paint it again quietly and it won't shine. Okay, we put your tomato plant back in the middle or a pepper plant. Some people want to put in more than one pepper plant so you can put in three peppers. Plant one here, one here and one here and let them grow there.
If you're going to grow lettuce here or spinach, put about seven around the outside, one in the middle, six around the outside, I mean, and one in the middle, seven, makes a perfect number in these tubs before growing that many lettuce or spinach. in these tubs. I don't recommend putting more than one tomato plant in these, unless you are going to put it in a barrel so you can let these tomato plants grow. down the side so you have all this room to grow them otherwise this cage won't hold up but one tomato plant up here doesn't help at all putting four tomato plants in it okay do you have any questions jack I need talk about this to close this video friends, if you like these videos, subscribe, press the button, ring the bell and we will make another video and yes, thank you for helping us reach a hundred and one thousand subscribers last week, we appreciate it. a lot and let's see if we can go for a million now not 500,000 I guess the next one is fine, see you later bye hello fellow gardeners well we're back and I want to show you about this this is a trucker bucket or a vacationer bucket, I'll show you how to go three weeks without having to water, I mean, it's because you're busy or something or you have to travel, this is the way to do it, okay, come on. to take one of these absorbent tubs, whether you use the blue one, the red one, or the black one, it makes no difference.
A farmer brought me 200 of these the other day and he sold them to me and it came with a lid now, not all of these tubs are going to have lids, but I will tell you that if you don't have a lid for them, all you have to do is take your piece of plywood and cut it there to make it big. like this, it can be square or it can be a sheet of orange leaf, anything for a lid, whatever you have, eh, but since this one had a lid, we took and cut this one, which we did now, we took five. one gallon bucket, this is actually a seven gallon bucket and we put it here and we draw a circle around here and just the size of this bucket, well, we actually use the top of the bucket like this right there and we cut, we draw line around there with a white marker and then we cut just within an inch inside that white mark.
I can see a black mark where we made it there we cut one within an inch don't cut it just a small hole because not enough wick we want this just an inch less so it can go into your bucket okay now take this bucket and Don't make a hole, I say don't make a hole, you wanta tub that holds water, this tub is going to hold about 18 inches of water, that's the reason we can last a month while it's small and still not have to water, this is going to be lovely. For you guys, now we're going to put this seven gallon bucket in there, we have to drill holes here, we did it, we missed that we have to drill four holes about half an inch for them in there and place it. in the middle, now you want this bucket to go to the top of this tub, well not this one, so what we did was we took another bucket and cut ourselves a piece, if you can find that short tub that we cut. hole in uh and a little white cube, bring it in and we'll show you what we did with the other one, okay, so we cut this one out, it will fit right up to this edge and that left it here at the right height to roll it up. through it, so we're going to cut a hole in the lid or in the plywood or in the ten sheet, anything, just put it there like on that which is right on top of that and you can see how this here goes to stay. sit right on top of that, don't put anything in this big tub that has no holes except this bucket that you want the top to be even with the lid, whether you use a wire, whether you use a piece of wood plywood or a sheet of tin or something that you have that you can do this because what we want to do now I've been telling you for the last two years, one of these days we'll start using these grow bags, these are clever pots made by uh smart pot in oklahoma city and i think this is one of the best bags you can buy.
You can buy some cheap ones online from China and all that, but this will last you years. It's made of a heavy felt and get the 15 gallon one it can be more than 15 gallons but yeah it's 15 because this is a 20 gallon tub so it's 15 gallons and what we're going to do now I'm going to cut this bottom, usually solid and just put it down there and that's going to be wonderful, so we're going to take this and we're going to cut it into six pieces, I'm going to put it right on top of there, leave it right in the center and I'm going to take a knife and I'm going to split crosswise three different ways and that makes me six little slits, so what I'm going to do when I put it on top of there is I'm going to push them down. there, like this, and fill it with soil to the bottom. uh, you put me, put me in that dirt, right down, in this bucket, right here, and we're going to fill that bucket to the bottom, now remember the five. a gallon bucket in the middle is going to catch that dirt and it runs all the way up here, well look, that filled the bucket down there and we're up here now at the bottom of this pot, push that dirt down. there and do it nice and tight in that bucket that will be your wick that will carry the water to your plant with this grow bag.
What makes it better is that in the summer he will do a couple of different things. To make your plant soil cooler, we did a test on some noble research about three or four years ago, we had the bucket sitting there, the tubs, we had a five-gallon white bucket sitting there, and we had these grow bags. in these grow bags at two o In the afternoon hours, the soil would be 72 degrees in these tubs and in those buckets it would be 84 to 86. That's damaging your roots, but you know that's what we were dealing with to use, those mineral tubs that were so available in the past.
So this way if you are growing the grow bag, your soil will be cooler as your roots come out and go through this bag, it will air root, prune these roots to the outside edge of the bag, this will favor that plant . that root will die and form a bunch of roots inside that bag that just surrounds this whole bag so this is the new way I'm telling you if you want to do the best thing I can tell you now is use a grow bag placed on top of a of these tubs of minerals and there you will have 25 gallons of water that will be absorbed into this tub that will last you a month while the plants are small and again, just go ahead and fill it with soil.
Put the fertilizers halfway like we did in the tubs, then fill it with soil and put your tomato or put your seven lettuces or seven spinach in there and you'll have it full of soil and you'll be ready to grow and you don't have to worry about this, yet. you have your pipe, let's make a pipe, I know it's here somewhere, the hole is okay, there's our hole, we have to set this up to the bottom of the pot, pot, it's just here in the water, like this, just there, it's sitting on the bottom and you put the water there after you've watered for the first few weeks on the top, getting wet and then you start putting the water. there and by the time you fill with water a couple of times a week for the first two or three weeks, the bottom will be pretty full, but you can also mix in some fertilizer, pour a teaspoon per gallon in there until it runs.
Take this hole out here and then you know it's full and then you'll be fine for a month while it's still small. If your plant came back in the summer and is six or seven feet tall, you'll want to water it every two weeks, perhaps. every 10 days, but at least that gives you a longer gap between waters, gives your plants cooler soil, and gives you some air root impression which causes more roots to absorb more fertilizer so your plant grows better and produce more. fruit so Jackie you have a question is this for sun or shade yes you can do this in the shade if you are using some type of shade plants but all of these vegetables need to be in the sun and there again if you don't want to let the water fill them, so what you do is you pile up this soil here, put the plastic on top with your plant in the middle or whatever you have and you can try to turn off the water, but I mean.
In the hot summer time we usually don't have that problem and I don't worry about it, I just fill mine with soil and go ahead and plant my plants and let it rain on them because rainwater is good for your plants. If it rains too much, it will go there and wash away some of your fertilizer, and you can put more fertilizer back in. You know, just three or four teaspoons that you washed there probably cost you 20 cents or 25 cents anyway so it doesn't break you, but anyway, okay, that's what we're going to do, that's what we've done here and this is the most recent improvement that we have, this is the grow bag placed on top of a mineral tub full of water referring to this big tub and some of you will call me and say, well, I have these little tubs here, these tubs small ones that are half as tall, so I'll show you a different way. to do this if you want to use that short tub, okay when I cut this when I cut this bucket, I cut enough to make this exactly this high and hot, look, so I cut it off and used that part, the bottom part. in the middle and put this on top of the other five gallon bucket to tone it up for the big one.
Well, I use this same thing. I can use this same lid. The same piece of plywood or orange sheet or whatever I used there. For the lid, we can make a shorter one if you have these types of containers and then you just take your same grow bag and you sit on top with a hole in the bottom and all we have to do is go down there. and fill it with soil in the same way so that the bucket in the middle is full of soil. There are no holes in this little tub, that's fine and you can put that right there anyway, come up here now.
The only thing is that this is. just about eight or ten inches of water that will last a good week in the summer but it won't last as long as this one because it's twice as high anyway, I thought I'd add that so I don't waste those little tubs now those of you who have the tubs of minerals that are divided at the bottom do not throw them away, you can use them to make the other tub that goes here instead of this bag if you want all you have to do is cut a hole in the bottom of that tub that is divided, Let's say, for example, this excuse me for the noise, but let's say this bathtub is divided at the bottom, then you simply make a hole the size of the bathtub minus one. inches so it sits on top of your tub and then you can move your tub in there and then just put this in there like that and voila, you can grow with that amount of soil that you have up there. a hole with a bucket underneath you put the dirt in there to absorb and that makes it good so don't waste any old tub we can always find a use for it if you like this video subscribe press the button ring the bell and we'll come back and give you we make another video
