I always love hearing from you. that's all I have so let's go ahead and jump right into the video so today I'm going to tackle this bathroom vanity. I'll use one of my favorite paints, if I'm lucky, paint in the color French linen. French linen is on the neutral and Diani spectrum. The thin line paint is gray but has some undertones like khaki and is a little bit deeper gray since my walls are like light gray and I'm going to seal them with overall high performance flat finishes. I have a couple of videos where I've used it on top of a nice long Chuck painting, so I'll link them above so you can see them.

You could definitely dye it. It will be easier for me to paint it and see how it looks. It's in really rough shape, it honestly needs to be replaced, but I'll try to paint it just to see if I can make it look prettier and if I completely fail, you know there's always the option of replacing it in a kitchen that doesn't. I always have that option, so again it's good to start small if you have any type of cave tree, whether it's in your laundry room or a small bathroom down the hall or your kids' bathroom, which is probably vandalized.

Anyway, peace as I always say around here. Start small and then go big, we're going to tackle this and I'll take you step by step. Let me zoom in and we'll get started, so here's my oak cabinet that I'm going to paint. Today it's original to the house, so it's almost twenty years old and it's pretty worn and in poor condition, so today I'm going to take some medium grit 150 sandpaper. I'm just going to apply this to a sanding block. Rough this up a bit. I'm definitely not going to strip the finish and usually with a nice long

chalk

paint, I don't even do this step, but since this is a cabinet that has a lot of wear and tear and may have a little bit of grease on it. handprints on it.

I'm going to scrape it a little so the paint adheres better. You'll start by grain sanding any doors and drawers you may have and then go ahead and remove. I'm just using a drill on the ones here, and if you have these little fake original drawers, you can usually just reach behind them and turn them. If you have real drawers, I would recommend drilling holes in the front of the drawer, separating them, and then moving on. go ahead and sand the entire frame separately so the front and all the drawers and everything are oak, but my side and my top are actually laminate, which is a piece of MDF with just a sticker on top, but I'm going to sand this the same way as oak, so sand this, you'll see these little white spots, don't worry, we're going to prime this before we paint it.
The next step is to take an anti-static cloth and simply wipe everything down to remove all that dust residue. With what we just sanded, make sure to do the doors, drawers, frame and side. Then I'm going to take the painter's tape and the plastic in one and I'm just going to tape the floor around my dresser. I love these things. it's very easy to protect the piece and then the floor and just one step and then you'll just take regular painter's tape and tape any areas of the wall that you need to protect as well, from the side of my dresser and My baseboard is laminate.
I need to do one extra step before we can start painting this with the truck paint and that is to apply a primer. This is the Zinser bullseye two multipurpose. This primer is sold exclusively at Lowe's, so if you want to purchase it. on Amazon or somewhere else, another substitute is bullseye one, two, three, any of them will work, we're just putting a layer here so our paint doesn't peel off once we put it on there, all you need is a coat this and you can use any type of brush you have at home to apply it, so I'm going to paint this with a nice lone truck paint on french linen.
Today I'm going to paint straight from the can because it's an old can and there's not much left so I know I'll use the whole can if it's new. I recommend pouring it into a separate container and working from there. Another great tip is to tilt the can upside down for twenty minutes. for her you start painting just to distribute all that color but all you're going to do is just stir it up this is the consistency we're looking for this is a shot of the brush I'm going to use today I forgot to film it, but here it's from a project different.
It is a fairly natural bristle brush. You can use a nice solitary brush, but this is the one I prefer. It's my favorite brush, so I'm going to use it today. spray it with a little water. I'm going to go for a smooth finish today and keeping the brush wet and spraying the paint every minute or two just helps alleviate some of those brush strokes and give it a softer look and since I'm going for that smooth finish. I'm going to paint with the grain just like I sanded it. When I say paint with the grain, I mean, just look at your wood and you will see the natural grain, it will go vertical or horizontal and it will just follow. those lines as you can see here the grain changes to horizontal so I'm painting along with that grain so I've spread out in my hallway to give myself a little more space because the easiest way to paint the drawer fronts and the cabinet.
The doors are painted horizontally like a table so you will get less drip marks so what you will need is a small can of paint like this or you can get them. I think they are called TPS painters or something like that. you just want to have something you can rest it on, this way you can paint all the edges of the door and the drawers, so now i'm going to show you my technique for painting a door that you always want to start on. the crack on the inside like this if you have a bottom panel you want to paint around this edge and really push the paint into those corners and then you'll smooth out the flat surface in the middle and then you'll go out to the edges of the door and to keep everything smooth.
I'm still painting with the grain. Make sure you don't go back and rework a section, actually paint it, and then move on. The only thing you need to watch out for is those big paint blobs or drip marks, make sure you smooth them out completely so you don't have to sand them again later when it dries and this is what that first coat looks like once it's complete and now that my primer is dry I'm going to paint the side of my piece and the paint on my board dries very quickly so that's a really positive thing about this so let it dry for a couple of hours and then you'll be ready to do your second layer, so for the additional layers that I'm going to do, I'm going to thin them out a little bit, so get a container.
I recommend a glass one so you can seal it when you're done using it. I do about 15 sprays of water for about a cup of paint and then I'll just shake it up and wet my brush again like I did before. Now, an extra step that I do for the second and third coat, I'm going to take the same spray bottle and actually spray my surface, so just spray it lightly before you paint, it just helps smooth out those extra coats. However, my painting technique will be exactly the same and for this finish, as I was going for a really soft modern look, I went for it. three coats of paint I usually do two coats when I'm making furniture, but for this I just wanted it to be really covered and smooth, so I applied three coats of paint on this dresser, so in between coats just make sure you allow enough time to dry I think Typical drying time is two to four hours, but just check your surface and really make sure it's dry before you go ahead and apply the second and third coats.
I'm just showing you one door here, but make sure you apply your second and third coats to your frame as well as your drawer fronts, so to seal this with a top coat, today I'm going to use the high top and flat coat. performance for general finishes, this has become my new favorite sealer for Jack Paint. I have a couple of videos on this and I'll link them above in case you want to watch them before you start sealing with the top coat. Make sure to clean everything with an anti-static cloth. I'll use a foam applicator.
To apply this top coat, my technique for applying this top coat is going to be very similar to the way I painted, so I'm going to start in these crevices and really push the product in there. I'm going to work following the long grain. I pat and walk to the outside edge of my door. This top coat is very important to apply in a thin layer. You would prefer to have several thin coats and then one very thick coat. It turns milky white but it will dry. to achieve a nice, flat finish, so when you're going to use a thin amount of product for a long time, you're not going to overwork a section that you already put on and just watch those drip marks and test. to soften them as you go and make sure to also make the frame following the grain just like we did with the paint.
Drying time for this top coat is 2-4 hours so make sure it's dry before moving on to our next step and here's a tip I always use when working with this top coat. In fact, you can store these foam brushes between layers, just stick them in a zip lock bag, squeeze out all the air and seal it tightly and you can reuse and reuse it. until you're done with the project, the next step, which is sanding, you'll sand between coats. I use a 220 sanding pad that is really broken, if you don't have one that is broken use a 400 that you are not going to remove. any finish here, you just dust it lightly to remove some of that finish.
You're using very light pressure here, you just want to remove enough of that finish to give the second layer something to adhere to, that way the layers will really bond together and create a strong finish for you and again you'll take that tack cloth and will wipe off any residue before painting on our next layer of top coat. I did three coats of top coat here, those are general finishing recommendations if you want to make it even stronger you can do four, five or six, but three was enough for me so I stopped at three again.
Make sure you leave those two to four hours for it to dry between the coats you are going to do. the sanding part again as well as wiping it down with a tack cloth and then applying the third coat so once my top coat was completely dry I decided to add some accessories so I just measured them and made sure they were really level before you. drill those holes measure twice drill once I bought them from Home Depot they are part of the Martha Stewart line the hardware is always a quick and easy way to upgrade your style just a little bit another project completed here is the before just to remind you what it looked like and here is the after.
I'm so excited that I finally painted a cabinet with Sloan Chalk Paint, so my final thoughts on this project. I think the cabinet turned out really beautiful. I'm happy with the finish, I hope. The guys found some great cabinet painting tips here. They are happy with how the top layer turned out. I think it will be a little longer lasting than wax. If you are painting with white, know that this top coat will yellow your finish a little. So again try it in a small place before you commit to making a full cabinet.
