More Interesting Facts About,

catching so many queen ants...

So I'm here in Toronto, Canada. Where this channel started is actually the reason it's called Ants Canada. Many of you have been asking why the channels are called Ants Canada when I live in the Philippines. Well, I moved to the Philippines in 2011, but the Ants Canada channel started here in Toronto, Canada, when I lived here now. I'm here at My Favorite Place to Look for Queen Ants. If I can't find queen

ants

in my neighborhood, I usually find one here on this nature trail. Many people have been asking me. Do you know where I should go?

They find queen ants and I always tell them to look for a place that has a lot of vegetation. Maybe a nearby body of water. Here there is actually a river not far from here, please excuse the planes. This is more of an Ants style blog. Video from Canada Now what I'm looking for are queen ants that have just made their nuptial flight. So for those of you who are new to the world of ants every year and have a nuptial flight where the young virgin queens reproduce and the males they have been waiting around the nest all year.

They take to the air and that is when they mate and the males die, but the females now impregnated with the male sperm fall to the ground and break their wings and go and look for other places to start their and their nests. And then we, as caregivers of ants, we go out during the nuptial flight seasons and look for these queen ants that are walking around newly mated and looking for areas to start their new nests. So what you have to do is do you have to keep your eyes wide open and keep them on the ground to look for Queens?
We have tutorials on how to tell queens from other workers and main workers because it can be tricky if you're not used to seeing what queens look like. So check out those tutorials on this channel. Another tip is that ants are more likely to fly after a storm So yesterday here in Toronto. There was a big storm So today we should be able to find some queens late Walking around now it's early August so the species I'm looking for now are the ones that belong to Formica Glacia S... and the Kempen audits should be close, is that what am I looking for right now?
For those of you who are in North America, Europe and Northern Asia, we are already in our wedding flight season, so this video is for you. I'm going to scan the ground here looking for any kind of movement. When you look for ants you have to be very patient. You can't get frustrated if you don't find queens right away. Because sometimes they are quite elusive. Mmm no. When we still find some,

many

people here write to us saying: "We can't find queens anywhere where I live." I mean, unless you live in Iceland or Antarctica, where? There are no ants So you sure won't find queens, but if you live anywhere else in the world There must be an environment, you just have to know where to look and when to look and believe me.
It is a rewarding experience. when you finally catch one and put it in a test tube and you realize that it is laying eggs for you and the eggs eventually become your first scientific workers and then you watch the young colonies feed for the first time and you know how to transfer that food mouth to mouth to the queen who had fasted for more than a month raising her lullaby tics. It is truly an amazing and truly heartwarming experience that ant keepers really love and I hope that you too experience that kind of joy and satisfaction in watching your ant colony start and for those of you who don't want to have ants.
You're just subscribed here to just watch videos, that's fine too. Thanks for watching this and putting up with us. We'll definitely keep you posted on the colonies in Manila okay, so I'll turn around and retrace my tracks to see if I'm missing or if there's a queen ant running around. What is this? We just found a queen ant, see that? Patience pays off, here's a Camponotus queen, she still has her wings, but if you've been following the channel for a while, it doesn't mean she hasn't made it. Sometimes we keep her wings and sometimes unmated queens break off. their wings, so wing retention is not the best and most reliable indicator of fertilization.
Alright, I'm going to put this queen in my container. This is great. We caught one. Another thing to keep in mind is that people often walk by, so sometimes you don't have to be embarrassed. Catching a queen is worth it to me. If you've seen my speedos video, you know Don't be embarrassed. Oh, the queen fell and now she's trying to break her wings with this species here. I think it's Camponotus Pensylvanicus. It is completely jet black, but sometimes we can have red marks. Alright. Now let's look for more queens. Now Camponotus ants like that queen we just call them are great to start with.
They're cool because they're big, so you can really see them in a material, you can see that they're young. They are also very active and eager to feed. They love their sweets. They love their insects. They don't sting, which is great, but the only thing about Camponotus is that they take a long time to grow. You usually see them reach an impressive size a year, two or three. Aaaand sometimes that can be quite a bit. a long wait for ant keepers, be sure to check out our Camponotus Tutorial on this channel if you are planning to keep Camponotus or if you caught a Camponotus queen this year.
But otherwise, Camponotus is a great genius to start now, one of the tips I give people is that you really need to be able to see properly. Like oh wait, I found another queen. You see this here. This here. It's a Formica. OK. This here is a Formica queen. Well, then this is it. I think Formica Fusca is very common. Formica species now, I'm going to catch it, but we found this cool. Also, I love them, they are very fast at Act events. Alright, calm down family. We caught it, sorry I don't have tons of snap caps with me so I'm improvising with the things I have now.
But I will transfer them to test tubes later, so anyway, as I was saying, it's good to wear proper glasses You need glasses if you need them wear your contact lenses because that can make all the difference in the world Before I have laser surgery , sometimes I used to go looking for clean hands and I would forget to wear my glasses and Lo and behold those were the days. I couldn't find any queen. Another thing to keep in mind is that

many

places require a permit to collect bugs, so it's best to really check the outside of your area, and of course if you're on public property you should. get permission first, okay and now.
While I'm going to continue searching for queens, here's a special announcement, Ac family, that I think you'll be very happy to hear. And here it is all good while I continue looking for queen ants. in Toronto We have good news for those of you who have been lucky enough to catch queen ants this year very quickly. We totally improve our Ac test tubes. Check out some of the amazing changes we've made to help you better. Take care of your queen ants while they raise their nana ticks, their first group of workers. First, our Ac test tubes are now longer so you can fill them with more water than most common test tubes.
Which helps make your water tank the test tube for your queens. last longer, our AC test tubes now also come with a little notch to help you fill the water and push the cotton, but what's also cool is that the Ac test tube even comes with a little blue sponge that you can push to the bottom. that knot One of the coolest new features is that these little cogs never hate how test tubes roll around in a drawer. These teeth keep the test tube still so your queen isn't jostled around all the time, which is important during this key period.
When? The queen should be as comfortable and stress-free as possible. Finally, the best part about our upgraded Ac test tubes is that you can now get them with these three clear adapter pieces that fit into the test tube openings. Check out this piece we found here. That leaving the test tube open in a setup sometimes makes queen ants and young colonies feel too exposed. The ants usually end up dragging their trash or debris to clog the end of your test tube. Try to restrict the opening to minimize micro drafts. which can endanger and dry out an ant colony and breeding.
But now, with this piece here, you can restrict the opening of the test tube so that the inside of the test tube is not as exposed to the air if you have raised broods and colonies. Before you know this feature is very useful. The hole is about four millimeters in size, allowing most species of magnetic workers to pass through. With this adapter piece, you can connect the entire test tube to any of our hybrid nests or Ac test tube portals. and as for the other adapter pieces, this one allows you to connect the test tube to our hybrid nest or AC test to the portal with a larger opening and this adapter piece to our large AC vinyl tube for links to all of these articles described and more information.
I put them in the description box for the keepers to review and the first ant in the entire world to enjoy this setup will be the big surprise I wanted to tell you about a couple of weeks ago, shortly after the titans. I moved to the terrarium Something caught my attention in my Ac family condo building. I am pleased to introduce you to our new queen ant. Here is our new jaw trap, queen ant and maca species accessories. She's a beauty, although I won't be able to bring the queens I caught in Toronto with me. manila This new queen ant that is currently in the dark in my ant room drawer is ours to care for and nurture, hopefully it will be fertilized and give us a column.
I also hope you don't mind me making this executive decision to call her. future colony in case they arise? the Jawbreakers and now back to Toronto, Canada. Very good, easy family surprise. I'm really excited to raise that queen, so guys, be sure to leave it in the comments section. What do you think we should call this queen? I hope they're okay with us calling them Jawbreakers once they become a colony, and hopefully they will. And I found another queen right here. Awesome. They are coming from everywhere. I have it, and the good thing is that while I was telling you the news I was able to catch more queen ants, look how many look at that.
Usually, it's better. Oh no. Oh no. They are fighting. Look, that's why it's best not to mix them, but I have no choice. Don't have. Oh no, let it go. I don't have another container. So they'll have to be together for now. This is dangerous because they can spray each other with formic acid, even though they don't sting each other, they could just formic acid each other and then really hurt each other. But I'm going to separate them as soon as I get home. Oh no, leave her alone And I absolutely will not keep different ant generals together in a container.
So I have the Formica Queen here and the Camponotus Queens here. So okay, I would consider today's success in collecting. Now what I'm going to do. What I do is put each of these into their own test tube setup and then hopefully one of them will successfully get a colony, and that's it. Family Ac.
