Catch, Cook and Camp Ep. 5 * Fishing Under a Volcano! * Two Night SOLO Adventure in Siskiyou

Feb 27, 2020
I headed to Siskiyou County in Northern California. I joked all

night

. I slept in my car. I took all my

fishing

gear with me on a two-

night

camp

ing trip. I was going to visit some lakes and some rivers that were still an hour away from the

camp

site, so I went. Let's move on, start the day bright and early, you know what I've got, let's get on the road, let's go to the campsite, do some

fishing

, so I had to take a little look at this lake and it's spectacularly clear, the lake more clear. What I have ever seen in my life is a little bit of history in this lake, it was formed thousands and thousands of years ago by glaciers, so it is very deep in some sections, it's not even that big, but it's one hundred and thirty feet. in some areas and I'm I'll be walking all over the lake trying to fish it trying to

catch

something for breakfast.

I haven't eaten anything yet. What I'm going to use is this little spinner I bought at Bass Pro Shops. I have six pound monkey. I have a pair. split shots in case it's deep and you need to get to the strike zone, but you could remove them if it's not that deep using the eight foot six salmon steelhead rod, a little long forecast in the trees like this, but there are some rivers and streams just don't have barbles so when I fish them later today or tomorrow I want that extra bend in the rod just to give me a little extra protection so the trout or whatever fish I hook doesn't spit the hook out after Today I'm going to the McCloud River to

catch

some wild trout.

I brought my fishing rod. It's going to be a big journey, but I'm excited to get out there at this stage and show you guys this. water, so let's get out there, let's try to catch some fish right now, look how clear the water is, it's about 4 feet deep, there's a little trout follower in that one right there, just a baby. I wouldn't turn this rock over here to see if there's anything underneath, sometimes I don't know what they're called, but there are things that look like wood and there are little bugs inside of them. Are those Cadis things?

I'm not sure what they are, but I'll take a look. right here this is not what I was looking for I don't know what the hell this thing is, this thing bites or what that thing is, whatever it is, it's weird and it gives me chills, but it's in the water below. a rock and a natural gate, so I thought a trout would bite it, so I took my little container with its butter. I wanted to keep them here for now so I had a nice little bite so far and what am I doing with this.

Spinners sometimes don't spin, especially if they're small and old, maybe have some grass on them or something a little bit rusty, so once I throw them, I like to throw them back a little bit just to get that spin. and after that you can slow it down a lot or you can keep the speed up and the spinner will keep spinning and that's what attracts the attention of these fish so every little opening like this along this lake I'm going to stop pulling a few casts now the water feels good, it's probably like a good 60 degree max, there's fish, yeah baby come on it feels good, a bounce here, that's a nice rainbow.
I can eat it for lunch if I can land it, let's take it to shore here, yeah. that's cute look at that fish look at that bad boy over there man that's a good fish it's got a lot of meat I'll gut it I'll clean it and eat it that's my lunch right now and then I'll fish some more let's do it this baby what a beautiful area and beautiful, what a beautiful, beautiful fish, it's a lot of fun to catch a good size, you can probably get around 11 to 12 inches, so we'll cut it right through the butt like that and get all the way to the gills. look what he's been eating - maybe we can even the hatch because I have a lot of flies with me holy crap look at all that oh wow wow look he's got some little bees oh my god look he's just gorging himself look at all oh my god oh the meat It's bright pink, oh my God, look at all that, they're like little wasps, little ants, very, very interesting and look at their meat, look at that meat over there, beautiful orange meat, this is going to be good, I'm going to them to clean. completely and

cook

them, so I'm going to go in front of the gills like that trout is so delicate, so tender and now I just stick my finger down its throat and since I made the incision from the butt to the front I can rip out all the guts all It comes out in one piece I think this is the kidney, am I right?
I just call it a bloodline, but some people have commented that this is actually the kidney, this dark trail of blood in the center of the fish. I'm taking it out and then my mouth is watering. I already had this beautiful trout. I'm about to

cook

it the usual way, you know how I do it, but first I want to show you the view from this. little place I walked 20 feet 50 feet from the lake and look how beautiful it is, it's just me here - man I can't tell if I'm more excited to eat right now or go back to fishing, there's my butter and there's a little bug by the one that was crawling before, all the bugs that were on that trout were all black, so I have black spinners and I'm going to try using this black bug; maybe I'll bite into a big one, but First of all, I'm going to make just a little bit of butter, just a little bit, a little knob, yeah, and I'll break the head off just like that.
I'll throw it back into the water later and so it fits in the pan. I'm trying to cut it in half and this meat is bright orange, like a salmon, like a wild trout. This could have been a brown trout that has been here for a couple of years, so it's pretty wild to me. Oh, my goodness, look. on that meat, man it doesn't get any better than that, oh man, now all I'm doing, all I'm doing with this fish is just catching it to cook it because I'm hungry, that's all I'm trying to do. I'm not trying to be a special master chef or anything, so all I'm doing is a little salt, garlic and pepper, that's it, my butter and avocado, this will last me a long time, this fish probably has between 300 and 400 calories with all the fat and This whole avocado I'm going to eat has at least 300 calories.
I'd say it's a pretty good 600 to 700 calorie meal, honey, you know what time it is so it'll cook for 3 to 4 minutes on each side. and with the avocado, this one is super ripe. I bought four that should last me my entire trip here. A lot of people said they eat sugar with avocados and I guess that makes sense because there are those sweet avocado drinks in Vietnamese restaurants. but for me, if I eat it with food, I just add a little salt, I take my own food, I cook it too, there is nothing better than telling you that right now there is a cloud in the sky, this is the perfect weather, no It's hot and humid. all I'm in Siskiyou County there's tons of lakes tons of rivers here's a big county up there's the Sacramento that runs through here oh I better watch my fist before a branch Siskiyou County that's where I'm at this time beautiful place Only about four hours from the city, so I like to eat this once I cook it.
I like to pour the butter. I don't need all that butter and then I like to take the meat off the bone. Guys, I'll show you up close. see if the bone just came out, look at that, you know it's ready when the bones come off like that, look at this, just shake it a couple of times and that's it, poke the bones and check that, look all the bones come out ready . ready to eat nice healthy omega-3 fats from fish and avocado, this is enough fuel for several hours so I'm going to switch out the barbless hooks and fish like that until I'm hungry again, she used a lot on fish tacos , but if you have it like this, you'll wonder why you've never tried this before.
It's the best combination, so let me tell you what I'm going to do with the water. I have this little filtration straw. and I had a water bottle I thought I had it but I forgot it in the car, so what I'm going to do is fill this little bag that comes with the first time using one of these straws, let's see how that works. I can screw a bottle on this thing or just screw the straw on itself and then you just squeeze it and drink it tastes like water it's nice I like it okay put it back in my backpack let's go fishing again and almost I'm sorry. feel a fish there it's like I can feel there's a fish out there this fish caught it oh I've lost it damn Adam that's a dad and a bite on this bait is a gold spinner oh there it is oh that's cute oh Yeah, Baby, let's go, yeah, I like this color, yeah, let's go to bed.
Wow, oh man, what kind of fish is this? Oh I spit the bait, damn, oh shoot, I said the reel wasn't a little more, damn I think it was a killer, ha ha. Ha ha, that wasn't a damn brown. I really wanted to show you guys, I just had a fish that I had never caught in my life. I think it might have been a cutthroat trout, so this is what I'm using. This is the The bait is gold here, brown on top and red on the bottom, it looks exactly like what the fish was and I pinched the barbs down so they didn't have barbs, ah, shoot, It's really bad networking.
I should have tired him out. a little bit more I should have played a little bit deeper hole right here, a very deep hole, last place. I'm going to fish in this lake and then I'm going to walk over this huge mountain and go to the next lake, but I'm going to take a Look at these plants down here, they're cool. I've only seen them at Home Depot or the farmers market or something, but they're growing wild here, so check these things out. I don't know exactly what they are called. but there are a lot of them, probably a lot of insects and mosquitoes flying on this wall.
Take a look at the plant. It has a small hole in the bottom. It's probably some nectar or something sweet to attract the insects. there they will slide down, although they will get stuck or slide down and at the bottom there are probably some digestive juices to digest those little bugs, cool little hillside full of these carnivorous plants, I see that big mountain behind me, I thought. I could get there by coming this way from all around, but there's no way to get there, so if I want to go up, which I don't think I'll have time for today, it's already four o'clock, I'd have to walk. all the way back around the lake all the way around all the way up and then up I'd have to go in that direction so I don't think there's time right now if you look towards the bottom, although you might see Mount Shasta Let's see if I can participate in this.
Look at all the snow ahead. That's Mount Shasta. There were no clouds before, but it is a

volcano

. It erupts every six or eight hundred years. It's been about three hundred years since the last eruption, but it's beautiful nonetheless. I think I'll walk back to where I was fishing there and try some more trout. I have a couple more tricks up my sleeve that I want to try, so maybe Heartlake I'll see you tomorrow and I don't know how hard it was for me not to stop and fish on the way here. I had to bow my head and keep walking.
I decided to come here. I made it. That's where I started. On that rock. I walked all the way. around and now I'm here so let me show you heart Lake, if there were no clouds right now, how amazing would this be right now, look, you could see Mount Shasta reflecting in the lake, it smells chaste right there, if there were no clouds here. You might see if that's picturesque, man, and back to the car, I have to tell you that all I want to do is continue fishing, it's about six o'clock, so I've been here all day and I'm not very happy. my turn to fish I should have eaten a couple more, I should have let those two I had at the bar play a little more, but tomorrow is another day and I have to go back somewhere, find camp somewhere and I cook some food and it's crazy how that food I ate this morning lasted me all day.
I'm not even hungry yet, just an avocado, a fish, a little butter, but yeah, I don't know if I can't. I'll find a place to camp. I'll sleep in my tent again, but it's a huge county. Siskiyou County has many different campgrounds and is the National Forest, so like any national forest in California, you can pitch a tent anywhere along the road, of course. Follow certain regulations, you have to be about 100 feet away from the road and stuff like that, but free camping, so it shouldn't be too hard to find a place to camp, but you better not want to go out on the road.
Now I just want to fish here all day, but I guess I have to be responsible. Come on, you know? I'm hungry, so I'm going to cook some food here on the side of the road before we continue, it's really nice to get out here too, get away from everything. I swear, it's like you don't appreciate a lot of things until you get off the road, so I'm on my way to the McCloud River and I'm passing by McCloud Reservoir and I had to stop look how look how blue this is I've never seen water like this look around what's so blue is like really emerald that's so cool let me tell you right now I'm in the middle of fucking nowhere, it's a seven and eight mile drivedown this dirt road and I have to go 15 miles an hour.
I'm about two miles away, hopefully I have enough gas so I'll be good with gas. Hopefully, there are no crazy people here and I'm just making my way down the dirt road six more miles to the fishing spot, not sure if you can see behind me, but there's a nice river flowing right there, the same color as that emerald reservoir. I was at Cloud Reservoir yesterday and the crazy thing about last night every dream I had was about fly fishing, one of them was using a 2 ounce weight and a high-low rig fly fishing was really strange.
Other. I had a guide telling me I had to walk a couple of miles, that's where the big fish just dream about the different flies they can use and everything about fly fishing, but I don't. It's not really strange every dream about fly fishing, so today's plan I'm going to cook some food, a lot of food for breakfast because I'm not going to eat anything after this meal. I'm going to walk miles and miles. Along this river I'll show you what rod I'm using. I bought this at Outdoor Pro Shop. I thought, man, I just need something cheap, you know, like a Reddington reel, you're like Nana, take this sage to weigh.
Sorry, it's okay if you insist, so I have that and I have a thing full of flies. I'll show you what I'm used to and hope it's worth something. I don't have any gauges, so I'm hoping I could use some roll casts if there are any. brush behind me so I don't need you to know I cast back and forth hopefully good fish this could be very exciting if I get one my dream is literally coming true so I'm using a 4x line that goes to a five pound tippet. Honestly, I feel like a complete newbie who has to start somewhere.
I feel pretty good throwing, although I know I have to train my men right now, so I moved down a little bit and let me tell you exactly what I'm going to do, so right behind me, you see. rock right there, there's a lot of current flowing around it, so I got the fly rod out now and when you try to cast the fly rod right there, make a spin cast right there and let it slide down to here. let it drift fix it let it drift trying to get to that strike zone. I'm going to try a couple different flies, the nymph and a couple of lightly weighted things.
I don't have an indicator so I'm going to watch my line and see if it goes below, my hopes aren't that high. I know you have to be confident in your bait to try fishing but I don't know if this is the first time I've done it and we do the best we can and hopefully get something if not. I'll keep walking so that's the fly I'm using right now, I'm not sure if it's the right one but what I have, if not I'm going to change this. They don't bite me that fast. I'm going to change. to something I don't know, I don't know what I'm going to do, just do a roll cast if there's a lot of bushes behind me, I didn't put enough line first, okay, that's a good spot, fix it, leave it. get it down there tweak it keep it down there I think I'm doing it right but I could be totally wrong okay I gotta focus on fishing not talking to the camera now right on the spot right there fix it fix it and that and come. about the trout baby fight that thing hey be sure to comment on any techniques you see that could be improved on mending or casting or anything so anyone who doesn't know anything about fly fishing I'll give you what I know, which is not much.
So the reason is that there are many different types of cast, but that is called a roll cast and you do it when there is a lot of Bush behind you because usually when you are fly fishing you go back and forth like that. and make your cast but now I can't do that because all the Bushes are behind me so I'm doing the casting on the spot and then the reason they fix it is because the flow of the river pulls on your flight line too fast and that pulls the fly at an unnatural speed, so to correct that you need to trim your line, you put your fly line above the flow of the water and so you keep the fly drifting as naturally as possible and you keep mending it until you see even your gauge go down or until you see your line of flight go down, you have to start from somewhere.
I'm pretty bad at this now, but give me, give me a year, I should be better, let's change that fly right now, this is my fly arsenal right now, so any fly, any fly fisherman, look at this, what would I throw? right now? Personally I'm going to pick that one over there, I'm not sure what it is but it's black and has a bit of weight to it. I want it to go down a little bit more so that's what I'm going to use now I've got a fish I think I've got a fish I've got a fish I've got a fish that thing I've got a fish okay I'm going to land it, come on he's a tiny, tiny fish, oh Oh my goodness, but if I could land this, it'll be my first fish on the fly, oh it's a little fighter, okay, take my net, come on, honey, get in here yeah, oh my goodness, no, my first fish. on the fly, let's go, baby, let me get my hands wet, this is a wild fish, I don't want to keep it out of the water for too long, look at that, look at that, oh my god, I made it, I made it, come on oh no don No go, don't come out, I don't know what this is, it's a rainbow, I'm not sure its pattern looks really cool, I don't think this is a rainbow, look at this, tell me what this is, it's a small fish, but it's my first fish on the fly baby, what's that beautiful little one?
Yes, baby, come on. I did it myself, repairing it, molding it and making the paper. Hey, okay, let me put this in the water first, there it goes, yeah, oh man. I did it, oh that's one, the day is still young, let's get more, yeah, okay Mittwoch, this fly is working, I hope I picked the right one. I feel like I'm giving this as an awards speech first. I must thank Fernando de Boer. has a fly, had a fly shop in Santa Rosa, contacted me last time so I decided to get the spinner out and try it for a while and I wasn't expecting what was about to happen, oh my gosh, oh my gosh, that was. a huge fish, so I'm thinking that fish was probably a nice five or six pound brown trout.
It breaks my heart to see that clip, oh man I missed it holy fucking crab do you see what the hell that session was? I missed it, oh what a day, shooting teeth, so I put the spinners away and got the fly out because I started seeing a lot of fish feeding on the top, oh my gosh, there's a big fish right here that just showed up and it's probably a you know, 16 to 17 inches. trout at least there's another one right there another one oh no they're coming out of the deep and biting something on top there's another one and I don't know what to feed it although it's okay I've literally seen two personal bests if If I could catch them the trout jump right in of casting distance so that's what I'm switching to now this little fly that looks like a moth pinched the barb down oh he's looking at it he's looking at it oh man I swear one came up and looked.
How devious is this, they are jumping around me, oh man it's like you not only have to find the bait they want but also put it in the area where they will bite it, man how frustrating must this be. I am back. I've been here all day, almost four o'clock. I have a little fish to show me, so I'm trying to do exactly the same thing I did here at the place where I caught my first fish. that's just thrown behind that rock over there, any luck today? Yes Yes. I had a little rainbow. That's all.
It's like my first time fly fishing, so I don't know who I am, what all the names are. I have a zebra mosquito and uh and some dry flies, but yeah, they've been on the zebra mosquito, this is what one of them bid on. I saw one go up, he didn't accept it and just backed away, yes, yes, that was it. my first fish on the fly before I was very excited, nice baby, yeah it's a great feeling, well yeah if you see the bugs outside and you see them starting to get up, change the guns, the guns drive flies, right, okay , now, are you fishing the indicator? you don't just don't just look at the line if it sinks all excited oh yes yes now put on you have a stimulator to put there nothing but the flies you put on this how to tie to fly one no, it's okay, I know it keeps it upright, you have to tilt it, yeah, five pounds, like 5 X 5 pounds, I don't know what down. yeah, so that's a fish and you want to set it up like the Statue of Liberty, okay, hey, I'll give you something for that, eh, good luck, good luck, hey, I really appreciate it, okay, thanks, see you around, good luck, he's super nice to that guy. stop and give me that, this is what the rig that you just tied looks like for me, so this one up here floats, so that's like my indicator now and I've got like, you know, two and a half feet of line going towards the black zebra mosquito.
So I fish with two hooks, now I have an indicator: if that thing falls off, I can set the hook and get it another little one, a small, wild trout. I think a second child of the day you could see it in his small, but oh well. Thanks to the little indicator that guy gave me, I feel a lot more confident, so I'm going to give this guy back, delicate little fish, there you go, my little trout friend, keep growing, wild trout man doesn't get much cooler that there went a tiny little thing, a little big zebra Barbosa, there you go and that's what bit the big ones, it will bite that and the little ones, it's just so you know that this is like what I've been going through in the past. two miles about having spiders, webs and bugs all over me, but it's worth it guys, I think I'm about to quit, it's getting dark right now, I don't even know how long it will take me to walk back. seven o'clock but I'm going to make a couple more casts here I tied an extra long leader I'm just going to try my luck I don't have much hope so do what I can and not too happy with my fishing performance on this trip, a lot of fish were lost , a lot of fish on my hands that I couldn't catch, but that's okay, it's all a learning process and you know we'll have Redemption another time, well, that's right. a long way back gave me mosquitoes flying in my face I fished since nine now it's seven good ten o'clock, what do I have to show?
Two small trout, but on the bright side, I caught them on the rod, so first. Anglers can never complain about that, but there is a lot to learn, so any fly fishermen, if you can give me some advice, what am I doing wrong? What flies am I? I'm using the wrong type of flies. My repair technique isn't up to par, whatever it is. I read those comments, so if you leave a comment I'll be sure to read them, but there's always room for improvement anyway. Something I did much better this time than at least on my last camping trip.
I didn't step on the fly rod, but yeah, I think that's what's going to do for this video, so I have to thank Outdoor Pro Shop, thank you for providing me with the rod, this great casting rod. Also to Siskiyou County, they paid for my gas to come. Up here, this is a great county, there's a lot of things to do, there's a lot of fishing, a lot of places to see, like Hart Lake, which is a beautiful, beautiful place, it's a heart-shaped lake and Castle Lake right below it. , which is like a beginner's fishing, you know you can cast it with spinners, you can use electric bait if you want and as beautiful as it is, the water gets very warm in the summer so it's a great place to swim, but if you come to the McCloud River, this is more like advanced level barbless hook fishing, just artificial lures, so oh yeah, that's what it is anyway.
I have to get a little better at that, so thanks for watching, guys. I'll be coming out with another episode of Catch Cooking Camp this year and hopefully there will be a lot more quality fish in that one.
