Catch, Cook and Camp Ep. 5 * Fishing Under a Volcano! * Two Night SOLO Adventure in Siskiyou
headed up to
SiskiyouCounty in Northern California I joke through the
nightslept in my car got all my
fishinggear with me on a two
camping trip gonna hit up some lakes and some rivers still about an hour away from the
camping spot so got to get to move on start the day bright and early you know what I got let's hit the road get up to the
camping spot let's do some
fishingso I had to take a little peek at this Lake and it is spectacularly clear the clearest lake I've ever seen in my life it's a little history on this Lake it was formed thousands and thousands of years ago by glaciers so it's very deep in some sections it's not even that big but it's a hundred and thirty feet in some areas and I'm gonna be walking around the entire Lake trying to fish it trying to
catchsome fish for breakfast I haven't eaten anything yet what I'm going to be using is this little spinner I got from Bass Pro Shops got six pound mono got a couple split shots just in case it's deep and I need to get down to the strike zone but I could take these off if it's not as deep using the eight foot six salmon steelhead trout rod a little bit long forecast in the trees like this but there are some rivers and streams that are barbless only so when I do fish those later on today or tomorrow I want that extra bend in the rod just to give me a little extra protection so the trout or whatever fish I hook up on doesn't spit the hook after today...
I'm gonna go over to the McCloud River to fish that for some wild trout I brought my fly rod it's gonna be a great trip but I'm excited to get out on this leg and show you guys this crystal-clear water so let's get out there try to
catchsome fish right now look how clear that water is that's about 4 feet deep right there a little trout follower on that one just a baby I wouldn't turn her over this rock right here and see if there's anything under it sometimes I don't know what they're called but there's these things that look like wood and there's these little bugs inside of them are they those Cadis things not sure whatever it is but I'm going to take a look right here this is not what I was looking for I don't know what the heck this thing is does this thing bite or what what is that thing whatever it is it is weird and it gives me the creeps but it's in in the water under a rock and natural gate so I would think that a trout would bite it so I got my little container of her butter I wanted to keep them in here for now so I had one nice little bite so far and what I'm doing with this spinner sometimes they don't spin especially if they're little old spinners maybe they have some grass or something a little tiny bit of rust on it so once I cast it out I like to pull it back a little bit just to get that spin going and after that then you can slow down a lot or you can keep it sped up and the spinner will...
keep spinning and that's what attracts the attention of these fish so every little opening like this along this lake I'm going to stop throw a few casts now the water feels nice it's probably like a good high 60s there's fish yeah baby let's go that's it feels like good one bounine here that's nice rainbow I can have that for lunch if I can land him let's get him on the bank here yeah that's nice look at that fish look at that bad boy right there man that's a nice fish there's a lot of meat on him gonna gut him clean him and eat him that's my lunch right now and then I'll fish a little bit more let's do this baby man what a gorgeous gorgeous area what a gorgeous gorgeous fish - so fun to
catchnice size probably you could 11 to 12 inches so gonna cut it straight through the butt like that and we're gonna go all the way to the gills let's see what he's been eating - maybe we can match the hatch because I do have a lot of flies with me holy moly look at all that oh wow wow look at that he's got some little bees oh my gosh look he's just gorging himself look at all that geez oh the meat is bright pink oh my goodness look at all that that's just like little wasps little ants very very interesting and look at his meat look at that meat right there gorgeous orange meat this is gonna be good I'm gonna clean them up fully and
cookthem up so I'm just gonna go in front of the gills like that trout...
are so delicate so tender and now I just stick my finger down his throat and since I made the incision from the butt all the way to the front I can just rip all the guts out everything comes out in one piece I believe this is the kidney am i right I just call it the blood line but some people have commented that this is actually the kidney this this dark trail of blood in the center of the fish I'm getting that out then my mouth is starting to water already I had this gorgeous trout I'm about to
cookup the usual way you know how I do it but first I want to show you the view from this little spot I hiked up 20 feet 50 feet from the from the lake and just look how gorgeous this is it's just me out here - man I can't tell if I'm more excited to eat right now or go back
fishingright there's my butter and there's a little bug I was crawling around earlier all the bugs that were in that trout were all black so I've got black spinners and I'm gonna try to use this black bug - maybe a big one I'll bite but first off I'm gonna do just a little bit of butter just a little bit nice little knob there yes and break the head off just like that I'll throw that back in the water later and to make you fit in the pan I'm trying to cut it right in half and this meat is bright orange just like a salmon just like a wild trout this might have been a stock trout that has been in here for a couple years so it's pretty much wild to me oh holy...
moly look at that meat man does not get much better than that oh man now all I'm doing all I'm doing with this fish is just
catching it to
cookit because I'm hungry that's all I'm trying to do I'm not trying to be any special master chef or anything so all I'm doing is some salt garlic and pepper that's it my butter and avocado this is gonna last me a long time this fish probably has about 300 to 400 calories with all the fat and this whole avocado which I'm going to eat all of has at least 300 calories - I would say so good 600-700 calorie meal baby you know what time it is now so that's gonna
cookfor 3-4 minutes on each side all right and with the avocado this is a super ripe one I got four of them that should last me my entire trip out here a lot of people said they eat sugar with avocados and I guess that makes sense cuz there are those sweet avocado drinks at Vietnamese restaurants but for me if I'm eating it with food I just add a little salt
catchmy own food
cooking it too does not get much better than that telling you right now there's one cloud in the sky that's it perfect weather not hot not humid at all I'm in
SiskiyouCounty there are tons of lakes tons of rivers out here there's a big County to there there's the Sacramento runs through here oh I better watch my fist before a branch
SiskiyouCounty that's where I'm at right now beautiful place only about four hours from the city so how I...
like to eat this once I
cookit I like to pour that butter out I don't need all that butter and then I like to take the meat off of the bone guys show you up close look if the bone just come right out look at that you know it's done when the bones come off just like this watch this just give it a little couple shakes and that's everything pin bones and all check that out look at that all the bones out done ready to eat nice healthy fats omega-3s from the fish and the avocado this is enough fuel to last me for several hours now so I'm going to change the barbless hooks and fish like that until I get hungry again she used a lot in fish tacos but if you just have it just like this you'll be asking yourself why have I never tried this before just the best combination so let me tell you what I'm going to do for water I've got this little filtration straw and I had a bottle of water I thought I had it but I forgot it in the car so what I'm gonna do is fill up this little pouch that it came with first time using one of these little straws let's see how it works you can either screw a bottle onto this thing or just screw the straw onto itself and then you just squeeze it and drink it tastes like water it's nice I like it alright put that back in my backpack let's get
fishingagain and I almost feel it I can feel a fish on there it's like I could just feel there's the fish out there this fish got him oh I've lost him damn Adam...
that's one father and one bite on this bait it's a gold spinner oh there he is oh that's nice one oh yeah baby let's go yeah I like this color yeah let's go bed Wow oh man what kind of fish is this oh I spit the hook damn it oh shoot I said reel didn't a little bit more damn I think that was a cutthroat ha ha ha ha that was not a brown damn I really wanted to show you guys dang I just had a fish on that I had never caught in my life I think it might have been a cutthroat trout so this is what I'm using this is the bait kind of a gold color here brownish color on top and a red on the bottom looks like exactly what the fish was and I pinched the barbs down so they're all barbless ah shoot that's just really bad net job I should have tired him out a little bit more shoulda played him a little bit more deep hole right here really deep hole last place I'm going to fish in this lake and then I'm gonna hike over this huge mountain and go over to the next Lake but take a look at these plants down here these are pretty cool I've only seen these at like Home Depot or or like the farmers market or something but here they are growing wild so look at these things I don't know exactly what they're called but there are a ton of them it's probably a lot of bugs and mosquitoes that get flown over onto this wall you take a look at the plant it's got a little hole on the bottom it's probably some nectar or something sweet to...
attract the bugs that go in there they'll slide down here though either get stuck or they'll slide down and on the bottom there's probably some digestive juices to digest those little bugs pretty cool little mountainside full of these carnivorous plants see that big mountain behind me I thought I could get over there coming this way from all around here but there's no way to get up there so if I want to go up there which I don't think I have time for today now it's already four o'clock I would have to hike all the way back around the lake all the way around all the way around all the way up and then over I would have to go that way so I don't think there's time right now if you look into the background though you could see Mount Shasta see if I can get in on this see all the snow straight ahead that's Mount Shasta earlier there was no clouds but that's a
volcanoit erupts every six hundred to eight hundred years it's been about three hundred years since the last eruption but it's beautiful anyway I think I'm just gonna walk back to where I was
fishingover there and tried a little bit more trout I got a couple other tricks up my sleeve that I want to try so dang maybe Heartlake I'll see you tomorrow and you don't know how hard it was for me not to stop and fish on the way up here I had to put my head down and keep walking I decided to come up here I made it that's where I started from over that rock walked...
all the way around and now I'm here so let me show you heart Lake if there were no clouds right now how amazing would this be right now look you could see Mount Shasta reflecting off the lake it smells chaste right there if there were no clouds right here you could see if that's a picturesque right there man and back at the car and I got to tell you all I want to do is continue
fishingit's about six o'clock right now so I've been out here all day not too happy about my turn out for fish I should have had a couple more should've let those two that I had on the bar plus to play out a little bit more but tomorrow is another day and I got to get back somewhere fine find the
campground somewhere and
cookup some food and it's just crazy how that one meal I had this morning lasted me all day I'm still not even hungry just one avocado one fish a little bit of butter but uh yeah I don't know if I can't find a
campground I'll just sleep in my tent again but just a huge County
SiskiyouCounty there's so many different
campsites and it is the National Forest so like any National Forest in California you can pitch a tent anywhere alongside the road of course you follow certain regulations you got to be like 100 feet away from the road and stuff like that but free
camping so it shouldn't be too hard to find a
camping spot but I better as much as I don't want to better hit the road now I just want to fish here all day...
all right but I guess I got to be responsible all right let's go you know what I'm getting hungry so I'm just gonna
cooksome food right here on the side of the road before I continue on so nice coming out here too getting away from everything I swear it's like you don't appreciate a lot of things until you get away on the road now so I'm on my way to the McCloud River and I'm passing the McCloud reservoir and I just had to stop look how look how blue this is this is I've never seen water like this look at that why is it so blue it's like really emerald that is so cool let me tell you right now I am in the middle of freaking nowhere it's a seven eight mile ride on this dirt road and I got to go 15 miles per hour I'm about two miles into it hopefully got enough gas right all right so I'll be good on gas hopefully there's no crazies out here and it's just me dirt road six more miles to the
fishingspot not sure if you can see behind me but there's a nice river flowing right there same color as that emerald reservoir that was up in the cloud reservoir yesterday and the crazy thing last
nightevery single dream I had was about fly-
fishingone of them I was using a 2 ounce weight and a high-low rig fly-
fishingit was really weird another one I had a guide telling me that I need to walk a couple miles that's where the big fish are just dreaming about the different flies to use and just everything about fly-
I don't really weird every single dream about fly-
fishingwell so today's plan I'm going to
cookup some food a lot of food for breakfast because I'm not gonna eat at all after this meal I'm gonna walk miles and miles along this river I'll show you what rod I'm using I got this from outdoor Pro Shop I was like man I just need something something cheap you know like some Reddington reel you're like Nana take this sage for weight I'm sorry all right if you insist so I got that and I got a thing full of flies show you what I'm used and hopefully something pays off in there I don't have any indicator so hopefully I could do with some roll casts if there's brush behind me so I don't need to you know back cast back and forth casted there hopefully good fish this could be so exciting if I get one my dream come true literally so I'm using 4x line that's going to a five pound tippet honestly feel like a complete newbie which gotta start somewhere feel pretty good casting though I know I got workout my men's right now so I moved downstream a little bit and let me tell you exactly what I'm gonna do so right behind me you see that rock right there there's a lot of current flowing all around it so I've got the fly rod out now and when try to cast the fly rod right there do a roll cast right into that spot and let it drift down all the way here mend it let it drift mend it let it drift trying to get down to that...
strike zone I'm gonna try a couple different flies the nymph and a couple slightly weighted things I have no indicator so I'm gonna watch my line and see if it goes under my hopes aren't that high I know you got to have confidence in your bait to try to
catchfish but I don't know first time doing this so and we give it my best shot and hopefully pull something out if not we'll just keep walking so that's the fly that I'm using right now not sure if it's right one but what I got if not I'm gonna change this I don't get any bites on this quick I'm going to change it to something I don't know I don't know what I'm gonna do just doing a roll cast if there's a lot of bush behind me didn't enough line out there first all right that's a good spot mend it let it get down there amend it keep it down there I think I'm doing it right but could be totally wrong all right I got to focus on
fishingnot talking to the camera now right in the spot right there mend it mend it and that and come on trout baby fight that thing hey be sure to comment on any techniques you see that I could improve on mending or casting or anything so anybody who doesn't know anything about fly-
fishingI'll give you what I know which is not much so the reason why so there's titute well there's a lot of different types of cast but that's called a roll cast and you do that when there's a lot of Bush behind you because...
usually when you're fly-
fishingyou go back and forth like that and make your cast but now I can't do that because all the Bush behind me so I'm role casting it into the spot and then the reason why they mend it is because the flow of the river pulls your fly line too fast and that pulls the fly at an unnatural speed so in order to correct that you mend your line you put your fly line above the flow of the water and so you keep that fly drifting as natural as possible and just keep mending it until you see that even your indicator go down or until you see your fly line go down you got to start from somewhere I'm pretty bad at this now but give me give me a year should be better let's change up that fly all right now this is my arsenal of flies right now so any fly so any fly fishermen out there you see this what would you throw right now personally I'm gonna go with that one right there not sure what it is but it's black and it has a little weight on it and I want it to get down a little farther so that's what I'm gonna use right now I got fish I think I got a fish I got a fish I got a fish that thing I got a fish alright I'm gonna land him come on he's a tiny tiny tiny fish oh my gosh but if I could land this it'll be my first fish on the fly oh he's a little tiny fighter all right get my net come on baby get in here yes oh my gosh no my first fish on the fly let's go baby let me wet my hands this is a wild fish I...
don't want to keep him out of the water too long look at that look at that oh my god I did it I did it let's go oh no don't go don't get out there I don't know what this is is this a rainbow not sure its pattern looks really cool I don't think this is a rainbow check this out tell me what is this it's a tiny fish but it's my first fish on the fly baby what is that beautiful little little guy yeah baby let's go I did it by myself mending it and casting it and role casting Hey all right let me get this in the water first there he goes yes oh man I did it oh that's one the day is still young we're gonna get some more yes okay Mittwoch this fly is working hopefully I picked out the right one I feel like I'm giving this like award speech first I gotta thank Fernando de Boer he has a fly he had a fly shop in Santa Rosa he contacted me on my last so I decided to bring out the spinner and try that for a little while and I was not expecting what is about to happen oh my god oh my god that was a huge fish so I'm thinking that fish was probably a good five or six pound brown trout it just breaks my heart watching that clip oh man I missed him damn holy crab do you see that what the heck was that shoot I missed it oh what a day shoot teeth so I put the spinners away and took the fly right out because I started to see a lot of fish feeding on top oh my god there's a big fish right here that just came up that's probably a you know...
16 17 inch trout at least there's another one right there another one oh no they're coming up from deep and biting something on top there's another one and I don't know what to what to feed them though all right I have literally seen two personal bests if I if I could
catchthem trout jumping right within casting distance so that's what I'm switching to now this little moth looking type of fly pinched the barb down oh he's looking at it he's looking at it oh man I swear one came up and looked at it how torturous is this they're jumping all around me oh man it's like not only do you have to find the bait that they want you have to put it in the area that they will bite it at - man how frustrating is this should I head back I've been out here all day almost almost four I got one little tiny fish to show for myself so I'm just trying to do the same exact thing that I did here on the place where I caught my first fish and that is just cast behind that rock right there do you have any luck today yeah yeah I had one little little little rainbow that's all it's like my first time fly
fishingso I don't know what I'm what all the names are I just got a zebra midge and uh and some dry flies but yeah they've been on the zebra midge this is what this is what one of them bid on I saw one come up didn't take it and only right back down yeah yeah that was my first fish on the fly earlier I was so excited nice baby yeah...
it's a great feeling well yeah if you see the bugs out and you see them starting to rise switch the guns guns drive flies right that's okay well now are you
fishingthe indicator with you no just no just looking at the line if it goes under all excited oh yeah yeah now put on you have a stimulator to put on there nothing other than the flies you put this on you how to tie to fly one no okay I know that keeps it upright you have to tip it yeah five pound like 5 X 5 pound I don't know what X it is okay let me see that fly right the things always moving in the water anyways but if it moves sideways rather than you know down yeah then that's a fish and you want to set it just like Statue of Liberty all right hey man I give you something for that huh good luck good luck hey man really appreciate that alright thank you see ya good luck it's super nice to that guy to stop and give me that so this is what the rig that he just tied for me looks like this one up here this floats so that's like my indicator now and I got like you know two and a half foot of line going to the black zebra midge so fish two hooks now I got an indicator - if that thing goes down I can set the hook and get him another little tiny guy a little tiny guy wild trout I think a second child of the day you could see it in their tiny but hey thanks to the little indicator that that guy gave me I feel a lot more confident so I'm gonna put this guy right back delicate little fish there you...
go my little trout friend go on get bigger wild trout man doesn't get much cooler than that there he's gone a little tiny thing a little zebra major Barbosa there you go and that's what he bit on big ones will bite on that and small ones - it's just so you know this is like what I've been walking through for the past two miles about getting spiders and spider webs and bugs all over me but it's worth it all right guys I think I'm about to call it quits it's getting dark right now I don't even know how long it's gonna take me to hike back seven o'clock but I'm going to do a couple more casts here I tied an extra-long leader I'm just going to try my luck I don't have much hope so you do what I can and I'm not very happy with the performance my
fishingon this trip a lot of missed fish a lot of fish right at my hands that I couldn't net but that's alright it's all a learning process and you know we'll have Redemption another time well this is a long walk back got mosquitoes flying in my face fished from nine o'clock now it's seven good ten hours what do I got to show for it two little dinky trout but looking on the bright side I did
catchthem on the fly rod so first fish on the fly rod ever can't complain about that but there's a lot to learn so any fly fisherman out there if you guys can give me some tips what am I doing wrong what flies am I am I using the wrong kind of flies is my...
mending technique not up to par whatever it is I read those comments so if you leave a comment I'll be sure to read them but anyway always room to improve a thing I did a lot better this time than my last
