May 30, 2021
Luke and Jake here on the catfish and carp YouTube channel and today we're going to do something we haven't done before we're going to

clean

fish and

cook

white

crappie

are you ready Jake yeah it's early

spring

and the guy Whitefish are starting to come on strong, their pre-spawn bite is on and they are one of the first big game fish it's really hot here in early

spring

this is going to be fun man today is a day sunny but windy, oh look at this wind it will cause us all. kind of problem is fishing today we only have old cardboard here we go there is one no, those are not snakes and worms oh here is one here is one okay let's try it inside our bunker we usually find tons of worms here well there are a salamander, not exactly what I was open for, yes a salamander, here's one, that's where you don't look for worms elsewhere, oh there we go, some big ones, there we go, that should be enough to get a good start. get off in the car seat oh, it's a windy and choppy day, the wind is moving us around something terrible, but let's see if we can't, there are a lot of signs down here, hello, they look like

crappie

or shed or something, so let's go ahead and try to get it right.

I have a surf fishing rig with #12 Eagle Claw hooks and a 2-ounce pyramid sinker. I'm going to go ahead and put worm pieces in both. looks good, here we go, a little balloon of worms like that, now it was a calm day. I probably drifted with four rods, but that's not the case and I'm going to have to adjust the boat so much that I only want two rods in the rack, so I'm not worrying about too many things at once, we're in 18 to 20 feet of water here same, let's see what we have, just this will be your this, oh, we, who took a few seconds, look at that nice crappie, yeah, oh, big paper.

Boca, look, he loved that, he's got this big

catch

net here and this is going to be my life, oh, I'm just going to throw this overboard. Can you store it in water? The crops down there won't like that drunkenness. hold it to my rod there this is taking oh come here jig there you gon' reel them in you got a crappie cocoon look then it's cool okay we'll put it in the net we'll let it go later okay well we got We've been

drifting

and fighting against the wind and they keep hitting us in certain places, so I think I know where the fish are, but I'm fighting the wind so much that I want to anchor just to be calm, no matter what the fish are doing. not exactly on the bottom and if you're anchored on top you have to fish on the bottom so this could cause us problems so we'll see what happened oh this wind is killing me we started dragging the anchor and we pulled the anchor towards There was a problem and tried to readjust it.

Now my anchor is stuck, so we're going to lower the camera and try some desperate things to try to get our anchor out. You could end up losing an anchor here. A little bit, okay, I'll update my first anchor a little bit. stuck I'm going to have to cut it out there's absolutely nothing that can undo it at this point so I threw in my second anchor so I could at least fish and suck it into the propeller and while this fuss with both of them I got my rods snagged and lost both rigs and tell me yes, we're really going to

catch

some fish, now everything's going to work out fine, now I re-rigged my rods and scaled it down.

Jacob fell asleep, so I took him for a nap. The anchors seem to be holding us in place right now, so let's see what happens. I want to cut this guy. Use them as catfish bait. Let's see what happens. Here we go. Well, let's check out a bluegill. I don't know, this isn't working for me. I was getting more drift bites even with all the crazy wind, so I think I'll take my knife, cut the anchor rope and let's see. what can we do Jacob just brought out his first chip pie I think I surprised him a little hey Jake, you like that pie, that's good right?
Wow, there you have it, we have to forget a big one, you have a big one. here we go, that's something we can go home and eat well. We've given this place a good chance, but we're going to try another place real quick. This is the most frustrating trip of my life. I forgot to pull the net. So, as soon as I took off with the motor, I ripped the Keith net off the cleat and my fish were gone. My networks disappeared. God, so we are down, a catch net, an anchor and a lot of fish, but we are. having fun and that's what really counts, okay, we need to get more worms, there's one, well, that's a big one, yeah, yeah, okay, we got some worms, come back here.
I'm going to give me some crappie, damn, another nice one, not huge. but we're not being picky, well, oh yeah, that's the big harvest that's not daddy's harvest, look at that, there we go, we take it literally, okay, I'm getting the point. The depth is. It's very important that you find these structures. and there are only schools of crappie right above these little structures and they are 10 to 15 feet so the trick to doing this is getting it to the right depth. I've been fishing too low so far. and now I have it where I'm figuring out how to place the rods at about 10 to 15 feet.
I'm hitting these spots and it's just BAM, we're doing great. Oh, a little one won't give us. I'll shine another light on the woods but we know we don't need any more crappie, let's put it back in there, we're doing well, this trip has been an emotional roller coaster, but I feel like I've learned a lot about crappie fishing. which is something I don't do, many of you know, reading your fish finder and knowing the depth your bait is at is really important, but

drifting

for these suckers can be very effective if you had a trolling motor and the wind.
It wasn't that crazy, I think we really could have smashed it here, so this is definitely something you should try if you're ever in the mood to eat some crappie, which I'm in the mood to do, so I gotta go home, hug and kiss mommy, of course, and then we have to

cook

and

clean

a

white

crappie, so let's go back home, we're back at the house and we're going to clean that crappie, not now. Expert at filleting, but I can get the job done and one of my favorite fillet knives are Dexter Russell knives. This is what they use in many of the professional fish processing plants and they are cheap, costing like twenty. thirty dollars and they are excellent professional quality knives.
My only real complaint with most Dexter Russell knives is that they don't come with sheaths so I went and made this one with garzke and made a video of it a while ago. I'll put a link in the description to my catch and cook fishing video as well as my catch and cook playlist. We have tons of catching and cooking videos, but it's not right enough to talk, let's play, okay guys, let me show you. how to fillet a crappie basically start from here and you want to get as much shoulder meat as possible so start at the back go over the gill plate and just cut it off okay you're going to go poke, poke, poke , push, push and You'll go until you get to the top of the ribs, okay, and you'll try to get it as close to the spine as possible.
Now you hold the fish down because when you touch that nervous system with a piece of metal, it causes it. Writhing is like putting electricity and a dead frog, so if you want to hold the fish down, you can feel the top of the ribs and then right here, you can feel the end of the ribcage and you want to take that knife and poke it through. everywhere. Go through like this, okay, and then run along that column, remove as much meat as you can, then come back here and open the fish, okay, take a little flap like that, go down here and get to the top. of the ribs you can see the ribs right there.
I like to work this first corner here and you just take the knife and let the top of the ribs guide you. You don't want to cut the ribs because I don't want them in the fillet and that's it, my biggest crappie, you'll have meat on the ribs, you want to get smaller crappie, there's almost nothing on top of those ribs, now you realize Note that I left the skin on the fillets with larger fish that you don't want. do this, but with these little pan-seared fish, the skin and scales are actually one of the tastiest parts.
I'll show you how to cook them with the skin on. It's absolutely delicious, we're here in the kitchen and I'm going to show you an extremely simple recipe to cook these crappies, we're going to make blackened crappies, you only need two ingredients, you need butter and your favorite blackened fish seasoning, so i'm using this i found in the store, it's blackened redfish magic, it's really good. I love it. I'm going to use a cast iron skillet, but any skillet will do. Just make sure to turn up the heat on the stove. You want this loud. Turn on the hood because smoke will come out.
Okay, those pans. heating up we're going to season our crappie meat we're going to season this liberally well once the pan gets hot and starting to smoke put some butter in there good butter once the butter turns golden go ahead put those steaks there, look at it, start. to shrink, start to run out of butter, make sure there is always butter, not a lot of smoke coming out, look at how wrinkled, the Flay are starting to wrinkle a lot, then turn it over, that's what you want, you want to blacken, that's where the name comes from that's perfect, yeah, it looks like a cheap bar here, you guys are trying to stay under the smoke, well here we go, blackened crappie place, when you put the side of the scale on that super hot browned butter, it fry and prepare it. crunchy mmm, they're like little fries, but hey, they're really good and the key is just high heat and really fast, it takes maybe three minutes and two minutes to cook all the way through, just go ahead and grab a piece, grab some of my fingers like that, oh.
No, it's on the floor, did you like it? Yeah, there you have it guys, black and crappie, two ingredients, takes three minutes, very easy, very delicious.
