s um and uh this just happens to be from april 22, 2014 april 22, 2014 and i'll post a screenshot of this on my patreon page for you members um so you can see what we're talking about writing um you can get an idea you guys know my

taking ability for better or worse um and uh so this it's a great thing playing over a dominant seventh chord that's correct in this style once again when we get to Barry the first thing we realize is that this is the truth this is real and if you're a product of the jazz industrial complex like i'm uh you know um have gone to no name school right here the school i should go to no name this you may know you get some of it but not like you're not thinking about it and that's what it is you're getting into the way what are you p People thought when they came up with the sty le and this is how you can really get the sound right I think there really is no substitute for direct exposure to the source and that's what you get when you learn with

barry

those of you who don't know you should come to his online workshops on saturdays he's doing them they're on zoom and do it do yourself a favor just get it from the source ok you can go to his site barry

harris

.com or barryharriscalendar.com do a search or i might actually even put a link in the description and uh and see if he's doing an online workshop but anyway other than that here's the very cool move from April 22, 2014 ok from a g7 so what we are doing?

Ok this is based on an idea that every g7 seventh chord has a seven flat five minor chord in its b minor third seven flat five is in the third of the g7 and a d minor six is in the fifth or so It's what he calls the minor, so okay, that's the thinking behind it, so what do we have? We have

three

voices double uh octave a with b and d in the middle octave e with f and a in the middle or the sixth of the 13th with the seventh and the ninth first it was the double ninth with the third and the fifth then you the sixth or the thirteenth with the 7th and 2nd or 9th and then the 7th and 2nd stay still and you move the bent note down to the 3rd so you have and the line is you'll go up a chord on the 3rd of the g7 there's a g7 scale and um, a chord by Barry's definition of a chord is to skip a note pattern note pattern note in the right scale so we're on the 3rd, skip a note, skip a note, skip a note and then put a half stand in front of it okay and if I wanted to do that all the way up the scale I'd go okay and we'll pick the one on the third okay and then that takes us right into the 9th which gives us the first of our

three

voices then we go down chromatically and that takes us if is a triplet that takes us back to the the second of the three voices and chromatically again ok here it is again one two three so that's the line uh you could do it in any direction you want obviously you can go up that's nice too you could vary all the levels depending on how much time you have in the song, you could do a little version of it, any combination of those three levels and again it comes from each seventh it has a minor seven flatted five or half diminished based on its third and a minor six based on its fifth So how can we use this?
