Bro. Mario Menjivar - A New Commandment (May 23, 2021)Jun 10, 2021
good afternoon, I hope it goes well for you. Let's open our Bibles to the book of John John, chapter 13 and our text today will be verses 31 to 38 and the Bible says therefore when Jesus came out he said now he is the son of man glorified and God is glorified In him, if God is glorified in him, God will also glorify him and himself and then he will glorify him, little children, for a little while while I am with you, he will look for me and as I told the Jews, if I go, you cannot. Come, now I tell you a I give you a new
commandmentthat you love one another as I have loved you and that you also love one another so that everyone may know that you are my disciples if you have loved one another Simon Peter said to him Lord if you are going Jesus answered him if I am going You can't follow me now but you will follow me later Peter said to him Lord why can't I follow you now I will give my life for you Jesus answered him I will You give your life for me, truly, truly I say to you, you will not sing until you have denied the emergence of myth, let us pray that God bless this time together, heavenly father, we thank you, dear lord, for your blessings, thank you for the opportunity once again. to be able to study your word although I ask you please bless this time together in the name of Jesus I beg you amen what is the symbol that identifies Christians some of you could say well it is the cross and you are right you have known the cross for many years For centuries it has been the main symbol that identifies Christianity and we see it on church steeples, we see it inside churches, we see it in our Bibles, we see them practically everywhere there are Christians, some of you might say, well , it is the symbol of the Christian fish, you know? that Christian fist fish symbol which is made up of two semicircles that symbol was used as a code for long persecuted Christians to identify with each other in modern times we have different things, we have, for example, Christian merchandise, you know?
The shirts, the sweaters, the coffee mugs, all those with Christian messages, Christian slogans, Christian symbols, right, and those are the things that identify Christians today. There's another thing that's very popular especially in America and that's the Christian bumper sticker and you see them. There are Christian stickers everywhere, right, that's another thing that identifies Christians, especially in America, but put another way, what are Christians known for? If you were to ask an unbeliever and a non-Christian, what are Christians known for? You know the answers you could get. They're not very flattering there, in fact the answers you might get aren't very nice if you ask non-Christians what they think about Christians, you'll probably hear things like well, Christians are just a bunch of hypocrites, Christians are hateful, Christians are anti-gay Christians.
You know, they're always judging what we do, they're just a bunch of fanatics and others, you know, thanks to the prosperity gospel preachers, others might say, well, they just made my money and it's pretty sad, but that's the idea they have. in their minds when they hear the word Christian or Christianity now that is a far cry from what Jesus said we should be known do you know what Jesus wanted people to know us? Do you know our brand or our identification? Know what it is? It is love love and we have that here in our text in verse 35 because Jesus said in verse 35 by this everyone will know that you are my disciples if you have loved one another then that is the symbol that is the identification or the mark of Christianity that's what Jesus intended anyway now to some extent the church has done this but apparently not enough I mean when was the last time you heard someone say well boy you know love That church is amazing, look how they love each other in that church, when was the last time I heard that?
They know that in the Old Testament God gave Israel a symbol and they know what it is. It is circumcision. Circumcision. God wanted all the nations to know that the nation of Israel, the people of Israel. They were different and so he gave them a mark on an um an identity and it would be circumcision eventually God gave them another identification the law but for Christians Jesus introduced love as a new mark not circumcision not the law but love why why why love because loving true love is proof that we have been transformed look at first john chapter 4 and verse 12. john said no one has ever seen god if we love one another god dwells in us and his love is perfected in us then John says here if we love one another God dwells in us that is the requirement if we love one another then how do you know that God dwells in you?
How do you know you are a real question? How do you know you are really saved? Well, John tells us. here inspired by the holy spirit says if we love each other if you have any doubt today if you are saved or not ask yourself this simple question I love other questions I love them that is the identification mark that is the symbol according to John and according to Jesus himself, That is what sets us apart from the rest of the world, whether we have this love for each other or not, so why love? Because true love is proof that we have been transformed.
You see, anyone can be circumcised. Anyone can know the law but only a transformed heart can truly show the kind of love Jesus is talking about here in our text only a transformed life in a transformed heart our passage talks about three ways this love will manifest in your life and again this is proof that you are truly saved in a true follower of jesus so how do you know you are a true follower of jesus today first of all if you have love for the glory of god if you have love for the glory of god look at the verse 31 in our text it says therefore when jesus came out he said now he is the son of man glorified and god is glorified in him if god is glorified in him god will also glorify him in himself and then he will glorify him five times jesus mentions the word glorify in those two sentences think about this can you think of two short sentences where you can use the same word five times and be grammatically correct five times? he mentions the word glorify, that is how important this word is now the word glorify, what did he mean when he said glorify now the time has come for Jesus to be glorified what did he mean? remember the disciples thought when they heard the word glorification they thought yeah bring it baby I mean we're ready for this I'll sit on the right hand you sit on the left hand and the other guy said no no no I'll sit on the right hand and you sit on the left hand and they started arguing about this because they thought that the glorification of Jesus was some kind of earthly coronation and that Jesus was going to physically sit on a throne and that he was going to have all this power and dominion on earth and that he was going to overthrow the Roman government and that's why they were looking for a position when they heard the word glorification but they were wrong because the glorification of Jesus meant death on the cross death on the cross why why why death on the cross was the glorification of Jesus well because three days later Jesus would be resurrected and I would hear a few days after that he would ascend to heaven and enjoy the glory he had before coming into this world look at Hebrews chapter 1 and verse 3.
Hebrews 1 3 says who being the speaker of Jesus Christ here who being the brightness of his glory and the expressed image of his person and upholding all things by the word of his power when he alone had washed away our sins, that means that after having died on the cross and having paid for our sins, listen, he sat at the right hand of the majesty on high and that's why the verse here basically says that Jesus came from glory and he was going to glory once again then he came from glory he came into this world he humbled himself He became a servant for you and me He went to the cross but then three days later He was resurrected and eventually returned to enjoy that glory that He had enjoyed before coming into this world and that is what Jesus was waiting for as He contemplated what would happen on the cross, not that he was going to remain on the cross. cross and yes, the cross is very important to you and me because it is on the cross where our sins were paid for, you know, and then Jesus paid for our sins on the cross and that is where he defeated death and that is where defeated satan. enemy that all that is true but he would not stay on the cross you know that the Catholics were wrong because Jesus is still there Jesus is not on the cross in the Catholic churches they still have Jesus hanging on the cross but as Christians we understand that that is not where He died but then three days later he was resurrected and he is no longer on the cross that is why in Christian churches we do not have a crucifix we do not have Jesus hanging on the cross no, we do not believe in that Jesus is now sitting at the right hand of the father enjoying the glory that he had before coming to this world so from glory to glory so again when Jesus was thinking about glorification he was thinking about the fact that he was going to return and enjoy that glory that he had with the father before coming to this world. this world now Jesus scolded Peter when he said that he was against the glorification of Jesus and we see that in Matthew chapter 16 and verse 21 Matthew 16 and verse 21 says from that time forward Jesus began to show his disciples how he should go to Jerusalem and suffer many things from the elders and the chief priests and the scribes and be killed and resurrected on the third day now again here once again we see Jesus trying to explain to them what this glorification was it was about the fact that he had that to die first and then he would be resurrected, right, the disciples did not understand this and then verse 22 then Peter took it and listened and began to rebuke him saying to be far from the Lord this will not be for you in other words there is no way that I'm going to let this happen to you Lord no no I'm not going to let this happen verse 23 but he turned and said to peter, get behind me satan you are an offense to me because you taste are not the things that are of god but those that are of men again look here for an example of a man a person who tries to come between Jesus and his glorification that's right that's sinful that's wrong that's without understanding what glorification meant for Jesus and that's why we see Jesus here scolding Peter because he stands between him and the father's will, that is, his glorification.
You know that God has a plan for this world. The unbeliever will always be against that plan, but the true believer. We will understand and love God's plan and people That's why we go to church That's why we read our Bibles That's why we earn so much That's why we give money to our church That's why we send missionaries to the mission field That's why we win and we try to spread the gospel and tell others about Jesus Christ, this is God's plan and we love him as Christians, we understand this plan and that is why we love God's plan because we always want to do God's will and we want God to have his will. glory we want God to have his glory and that is why we love God's plan romans 1 and verse 16 this is something that the world does not understand but as Christians we understand it and we love it we are willing to die for this romans 1 16 for I am not ashamed of gospel of Christ because it is the power of God for salvation to everyone who believes the Jew first and also the Greek and also in 1 Corinthians chapter 1 and verse 18 because the preaching of the cross is to them. that we perish through foolishness but for us who are saved it is the power of god so what does this proof give you that you really are a true follower of christ if you have love for the glory of god secondly secondly if you have love by other Christians?
If you have love for other Christians in our text verse 34 please say a new
commandmentI give you that you love one another as I have loved you that you also love one another verse 35 in this everyone will know that you are my disciples, if he love one another, now you might be wondering how is this a new commandment, wasn't this commandment about loving your neighbor, loving others in the old testament and you're right, God gave the Jewish nation the commandment to love your neighbor. and we see that in Leviticus chapter 19 and verse 18 it says there is the commandment, you will not take revenge or hold a grudge against the children of your people but you will love your neighbor listen as you love yourself I am the lord and so God gave this commandment to love your neighbor love others as yourself this was a commandment but listen love was never the mark of the jews so they never practiced it you know the jews were full of hatred towards other people and they feel superior to other people love It was given to them, but never as a mark of identification, it was not something that would identify them with other people, no, for them, the mark, remember, was circumcision and finally God gave them the law which, as you know, also separated them from other nations, that was their mark. no love, so love was never the mark of the Jews now this would be a new commandment so for the church it is a new commandment when you think about it in two different ways or by twodifferent reasons it is a new commandment first it is a new commandment because it should be the identifying mark of the believer of the church it is the identifying mark it is not the symbol of the cross it is not the symbol of the little fish it is not bumper stickers it is not the coffee mug that your grandmother gave you last Christmas are not those things the mark that identifies the believer the mark that identifies you and me today so that others know that we are truly saved and that we are true followers of Jesus Christ that mark that identify is love for one another that's what Jesus says and that's why look, this is a new kind of love because now love becomes a brand, not just a commandment, okay, not just a commandment, no only in a law, but now it is an identification mark, that is why it is a new commandment.
The second reason why this becomes a new commandment is because it must be a different type of love. A different type of love is to be a sacrificial and selfless type of love. You see, worldly love for the most part is always looking for something. Think about this. Worldly love always seeks something. You know, when people say: I love you deep down. after something in return, in other words, what they're really saying when they say I love you is that I expect something from you, I need something from you and that's why I want you around, agape love, the kind of love Jesus talks about in our text the type of love that becomes a commandment in Christianity agape love is not the same it is different notice in verse 34 that Jesus says how I have loved you the type of love that Jesus expects us Christians to have is the same that he had excuse I for the church is the same kind of love now how did Jesus love them?
How did Jesus love his disciples? How did Jesus love his followers? and died for them is a kind of selfless love and that is the way he wants us to love one another in the church today first corinthians chapter 13 please in verse 4 first corinthians chapter 13 and verse 4. now most Of us are very familiar with this passage here about love now this passage is used for most weddings but it was actually intended to be doctrine for the church, you know, when Paul wrote these words here in 1 Corinthians 13, I was not thinking that these words were not going to be used for weddings, no, in reality I was writing these words to be read in a church that had many problems and that church needed to return to first love, that church needed to understand again what it was. true love. about and so Paul writes to the Christians in Corinth and says remember that Jesus said to love one another and how we love each other well here is how and so he begins to describe what agape love is all about and we see that in verse 4 very well a description of the type of love that Jesus expects from you and for me why he expects this because he practiced it he exemplified it he showed us how to love this way and so in verse 4 Paul says charity and for him the way in which the word charity here it's agape it's love so you can replace the word charity with the word love and it's the same thing and then love then or charity suffers for a long time how is this love supposed to be okay suffers for a long time what does that mean? who is patient and is patient for a long time how much patience do you have for other believers for another brother for another brother or for another sister how patient are you with them notice what else this type of love is kind says here it is kind you are kind in the church you are kind are you kind to other believers are you kind and notice what else is not charity envy are you envious are you jealous of other brothers or sisters are you jealous of what they wear are you jealous of what they?
Are you jealous of the positions they may have in the church? Are you jealous of where they live? That's what Paul is talking about here Are you jealous because here he says charity envy if you don't notice what else charity wanted not in itself it's not conceited it's you're not proud you're not conceited when you go around church thinking you're all that. and just by being conceited you are not exemplifying this type of love notice what else verse 5 you are not behaving unseemly you are not being mean to other people That's what it means when you love this way, you are not bad, you are not being ugly to other people , but you are kind, you are kind, notice that he does not seek his own, it is a type of selfless love, you know it when Are you around other Christians?
Other brothers or sisters. Are you always looking for yours? Are you always looking for something for yourself or are you trying to be useful? Are you trying to be a blessing to other people? Notice what else is not easily provoked, it is not easily provoked to you. I know that the person who has this kind of love does not have a short fuse, don't you know? He just goes crazy just because someone said something. It's okay, it's not easily provoked. Notice what else you think. No harm. Verse six, he does not rejoice in iniquity, but he rejoices in the truth in other words there should be no gossip in the church there is no gossip here it is okay, here it says he rejoices in the truth he endures all things believes all things hopes all things endures It's all an incredible kind of love and that's the kind of love that Jesus said we should practice in the church, you know each other and to the point where other people outside the church could identify us by that kind of love when We love this way when we are kind to each other when we encourage each other when we help each other when we pray for each other when we simply practice this type of love it is a love that will manifest itself in the way we walk in the way that we talk in the way we interact with each other to such an extent that unbelievers will take note and say wow you know I may not believe what they believe but that kind of love is amazing I mean I just don't understand how they can do it. love each other that way, you know that should be the mark of the Christian again, not the cross, not the fish, not the bumper stickers, but love this kind of love that will make others take notice, so, How then do you know that you are a true believer?
If you love that god you will have his glory you know his glorification secondly if we have this type of love for other Christians and thirdly how do you know that you are a true follower of Jesus number three if you have love to be with Christ if you have love to be with Christ verse 36 in our text Simon Peter said to him Lord when he comes out Jesus answered him if I go you can't follow me now but you will follow me later and look what Peter said verse 37 Peter said to him Lord Why can't I follow you now?
I will give my life for you. Jesus answered them: Will you give your life for me? Truly, truly, I say to you, the cow will not crawl until you have denied me three times. The people Peter couldn't conceive of being. without christ, you know and i really think he was sincere when he said he was willing to die for jesus, but listen, as long as jesus was with him, peter was willing to die for jesus as long as jesus was around now, why did peter end up? until he denied the Lord Jesus then you know why because he distanced himself from Jesus he began to follow him from afar that's why but while Peter was close to Jesus Peter was bold and had courage and I do believe that Peter was willing to die for Jesus I believe his words were sincere here in our text when he said I am willing to die for you Lord and we see that and we see an example of that uh in um in Gethsemane when Jesus was going to be arrested look um, come on look at John chapter 18 and verse 10 John 18 and the verse 10 says then simon peter drew a sword and struck the servant high priest and cut off his right ear the servant's name was malcus and so we see here that peter was not afraid to die and i believe that when peter said those words in the upper room sir I'm willing to follow you wherever you go I want to be with you and if that means I have to die I'm willing to die for you I think he really meant it, okay, we see here that he's willing to fight, you know, for Jesus, Jesus is going to be detained here and he grew his sword and was willing to fight and die for the cause of Jesus, why because Jesus was nearby?
Jesus was. right there in front of him and as long as Jesus is close to him, he is willing to follow him and die for him, you understand that the problem is when he turned away from Jesus and started following him from afar and we see, uh, that's it. exactly what is happening he was weak when he was far from jesus look at matthew chapter 26 and verse 57 matthew tells us and those who have taken jesus let him go to take care of us the high priest where the scribes and elders were gathered but listen peter Peter followed him from afar to the palace of the high priest and entered and sat with the servants to see the end and what happened ended up denying our Lord Jesus why because he began to follow Jesus from afar not close Jesus already He did not have His presence and that is why he felt weak and was afraid as long as Peter was close to Jesus, he was brave and was willing to die for him, so listen, when you stay close to Jesus, you will be faithful, but if you follow him from the distance like peter guess what sooner or later you too will deny it you will be ashamed to be called a christian but i digress you know the main point here is that the true believer will have love to be with christ and again we see peter exemplifying here that that kind of love in the upper room he expressed it and I think those are true words in verse 37 he said lord why can't I follow you now in other words I want to be where you are no matter what and then here's a point that that kind of love that is willing to be where christ is no matter what that kind of love that wants to be with christ no matter the cause that is the kind of love that proves you are a true follower of christ psalm 42 and verse 1 says as the heart pants After the water breaks, this is how my soul cries out for you, oh god, do you feel this way?
Are you like this deer that roars after the streams of water? gasp, that's what he says, gasp my soul after, do you feel that way? I feel like this deer that just longs for, you know, just wants this water, you know, and you're like this, you feel like this, that's proof that you're saved today. proof that you are a true follower of christ so three things again that prove to us that we are true followers of god again is is love is love and here we see this type of love manifested in three ways three different ways now In the first one we saw that it is a love for the glory of God, a love for the glory of God, secondly, it was a love for other Christians and thirdly we saw that it is a love for simply being with Christ no matter the cost, I hope that is you today . pray heavenly father we thank you again for your blessings thank you for teaching us these truths today and these wonderful things that we learned about the type of love that you have placed in our hearts help us dear lord to exemplify this love in our lives so that others may know that We are true believers and true followers of Jesus Christ and we ask for all these things in the name of Jesus Christ.
Amen, God bless you.
