for behold why theirs is the kingdom of heaven just today in the First part of this, we're trying to get the what out of these words of Christ. I want to see the challenge, the blessing, and then some very simple applications. First, then the appeal. Blessed are the

poor

in

spirit

. we here what it looks like to be poor in spirit in real life poor of course we understand that it means you don't have much food in spirit then it means you realize what you lack you know you don't have what it takes your hands to be empty instead of full of what you think you bring that you have nothing to offer that's pretty simple the real question of course is what it looks like in real life so let's assume the most gifted player in high school ol football team is Christian and is walking according to the words of Jesus, does this mean that when this guy shows up for training at the start of the new season, he is somehow saying to his coach, well you know I'm I'm not sure I have much to offer the team and maybe the coach should pick someone else which means a person comes in for a job interview and at the end of that interview the prospective employer says a famous last question now tell me why we should give you this job is that christian candidate to sit there and say i know really very sure i i don't know if you should i mean there are probably a dozen people who could do a lot better than me is that's that's that what it means to follow the words of jesus if that is what it means we should do it you will be glad to know that is not what the word of jesus means what it means to be poor in spirit what does it seem like in real life he is poor in spirit?

It simply means that you recovered Know your poverty before God Jesus is not talking here about men and women in relationship to each other, but rather he is describing what a person feels what a person knows when face to face with the living God blessed are they. poor in spirit Jesus says theirs is the kingdom of heaven poor in spirit then it is the first mark of a person who genuinely walks with God you can be a multi-talented sports superstar you can be a high flyer and mega successful in the The business world can be a mega mom, you can be a brilliant musician, you can be a technical guru, you can even be a political genius, but if you have really met God, you will know that before him you have nothing to offer, that's for sure.

Of course he is one of the most talented people who ever lived before the time of Jesus Christ discovered I'm thinking of Isaiah what a wonderful ministry he had he was a preacher here er a man known and celebrated for his wonderful ministry silver tongue benefits if Isaiah Washington Today people would flock to conference rooms just to hear him speak and if he were on Twitter millions would follow his Oracle . Here is the testimony of this very talented man who would have been celebrated in his time for his many many abilities says this in the year that king Uzziah died I saw the Lord and he was sitting on a throne high and lifted up and his robe filled the temple and the seraphim around him were shouting holy holy holy is the Lord of hosts and the foundations shook and smoke filled the house and I said Isaiah, the most gifted man of his time, oh me, I'm lost, well if Isaiah the prophets were lost, where does that leave the rest of us? see my gifts, my talents, but before a sovereign and holy God, when I really have to know him, when I found him, I had a totally different vision of myself, I saw that I have absolutely nothing to offer when he is in his presence and I don't It's interesting that Isaiah had been preaching in the ministry for quite some time before this happened, but at one point in his life as he came before God with this intense closeness, God reaching out to him fundamentally changed his view of himself and that changed. see coveted with him all his life.

I am asking you this question, so have you gotten close enough to God? Has God come close enough to you that you have come to see that in your trial, as much as you are celebrated for your various gifts and time and successes of others in your prime, he has come to see that you are bankrupt before him? or is it the truth that God is so far from you as just a vague belief that such a notion has never really imposed itself on your own soul thinks of this pride can only really live in the soul of a person at a great distance from God the pride step on the accelerator if you want to get as far away from God as possible because pride cannot exist in the presence of God like Satan h same before the beginning of time was quickly realized when the presence of God descended on the temple and of course it happened again. back to the vision of Isaiah in Isaiah chapter 6 do you remember when the presence of God descended the smoke filled the temple have you ever been in a smoky building have you ever been caught in a fire can you imagine you this? the presence of God the smoke from the presence of God is coming down this temple and pride reels out of the soul coughing and spluttering because it cannot live in the awesome presence of God that is what happened to Isaiah and the result was that man he became poor in spirit and he entered a place of knowing God's blessing in a profound and wonderful way and what we are seeing here is that it is the spirit of Putin really is the first mark of a person who lives close to God the pride is always the mark of a person from a distance because pride itself cannot exist for long in the awesome glory of the presence of God the presence of God t The smoke of his presence always suffocates pride, so this is what We are learning, whatever your position in this world, whatever your God-given talents and success, however celebrated you are in different spheres of life, you are in a state of c completely different. different position when it comes to God the gifted soccer player has a talent to offer his team and of course you will be celebrated at school and offered scholarships to college and everything else but when you stand before God if If you have any knowledge of God, you will know that you have nothing to offer there, but only come before God in your need.
blessed are the poor in spirit sermon on matthew 5 3 from the beatitudes
The talented graduate has a talent to offer his company. a promotion early in his career, he'll attract the company of other talented people, he'll be something of a center of influence, but before God, if he's really gotten to know you, he'll know that no matter how much attention you give him lend. n she receives and has ever celebrated she is one of so many other people she is before God in all her need and finally has nothing in her hands to offer you have something to offer your family you have something to offer your company you have something to offer to your friends and your team but if you walk with God you will identify with the Apostle Paul when he asks you the question that you have that you did not receive where these talents came from how they ended up being in your life in which who gave you all this success, what you have that you did not receive and since everything in your life that can often be celebrated by others is the gift of God and you know it, how can arrogance always stand with its head held high? high in the presence of God as if I somehow have something to offer him, where do I have something that I have not received?
So friends, this is the call. I wanted it to be very clear in our minds. of how we pursue that and we'll come back to that next weekend and hopefully we'll have a lot of posts in the congregation as we start to think about humility and how to pursue it and what it looks like and encourage each other on these things before before that move to second place to the blessing that we have seen in the call but that is only the first half look at the blessing here blessed are the poor in spirit for theirs is the kingdom of heaven now here is this amazing statement from the Lord Jesus that says of the people who know they have nothing to offer before God, he says that now blessed are these people who are so aware of their own lack that it will take their own inability to produce what God calls them: these are the same people who Jesus says they are blessed This is where God's blessing begins.
Jesus says that being poor in spirit is the gateway to blessing for everyone else who will continue through the series on the teaching of the Lord Jesus Christ. Without this, there are no other blessings. thin your grasp this is the entrance this is the only place where any trade can begin and the only place where all of us must begin now have you noticed here that Jesus talks about heaven in the present tense have you noticed that blessed are the poor in spirit for theirs is the kingdom of heaven now future sorrow not so then we might expect Jesus to say theirs will be the kingdom of heaven but that is not what he says he says theirs is the kingdom of heaven and it is even more amazing if you look the rest of the Beatitudes and you will see that they are consistently the rest of them are all in the future tense except the one you would expect to be in the future tense which is not in the present tense the rest are those who weep will be comforted the meek will inherit the earth those who are hungry and thirst for justice will be satisfied but when it comes to this Jesus says blessed are the poor in spirit because theirs is the kingdom of heaven present time Before now then Jesus is talking that this is huge as you start to open your mind Jesus is talking about a taste of heaven that you can have right now present time now you think about it you start to scratch your head and say well no boy life in this The world is a long way from heaven, isn't it?
How can I have a genuine taste of heaven? I have that now the lion lying down with the lamb the nation waging war no more every white tear in our eye we have none of that now well then what a taste of heaven do the poor in spirit have now I am going to give a scripture worth knowing marking the learning and hiding it in your heart is one of the great scriptures in the entire Old Testament from Isaiah chapter 57 and verse 15 and it says this thus says the Lord who is high and lifted up of course that is the same phrase that was used above when saiah saw the glory of the lord in the temple his height and he is lifted up he lives in eternity and his name is holy he lives in eternity so that is heaven that says i live in a high and holy place heaven itself but also with which it is an offering of a contrite and humble spirit that the sovereign lord of the universe is reeling, who is exalted in the heaven of heavens high and sublime and Isaiah who gives this word by inspiration of the Holy Spirit saw his glory and made her feel her total bankruptcy in the presence of God and now this God who inhabits the glory of heaven says I want you to know that I not only live in hell the high and holy place but I live with the person who has a contrite spirit and humble heaven is to live with God well and the poor in spirit prove it because God comes to live with them so if you want to go beyond the vague religious belief in which God keeps his distance from you if you want to have a sense conscience of his presence in your life and everything you face this week this is where you should start if you feel the need for it this is the exact same scripture you need to hear today God makes his home he dwells that is the word with the person who is poor in spirit heaven is in the lowly before the lowly are in heaven so there is a wonderful blessing here today for the person who has come to church and you feel overwhelmed by some challenge perhaps no one e more here I know but you do and God does and you've been telling yourself I don't have what it takes and you don't know how you're going to move on from here you know what God is calling you to right now it is beyond the reach of your your own talents and your own ability the circumstances of your life I brought you to the very place where you are that poor in spirit you see that you do not have it and Jesus Christ himself says isaiah 57:15 I will abide with you when I finish I approach to you in a service and then I leave you this week. i will walk with you in this i will live with you i will introduce myself to the one who is of a humble and contrite spirit who knows his need is aware of his lack there is so much blessing for the person who came here today and you have felt overwhelmed by temptation probably has led you to fail in this last week and you say I just don't know what to do with these things it seems to come to me in waves and it feels like too much for me and you see what is happening in the mercy of God the same temptations that seem to overwhelm you are leading you to place of hope the place where you are poor in spirit you are saying i don't have what it takes to beat this and jesus christ comes to you today and says i will abide with you 24/7 you don't know when and what is coming this week but i will walk with you in it you will not be alone the tremendous blessing here today for the person who has really spoiled your sin has discovered you and the enemy of your soul who has revealed it to youhe said ou there was no harm in it now he is telling you there is no hope because of it but if your failure should bring you today to a place of genuine humility before God if your sin should bring you to the place where instead of arrogance before him where you are always asserting yourself there is a humility of spirit that is now born by His grace out of this very failure I am telling you that God can use the sin that would have landed you in hell to help you find your way to it that is his grace explosion explosion explosion are the poor in spirit heaven belongs to them we have not looked at the call we have looked at the blessing let's see together some applications in this first part of our reflection on this first and marvelous beatitude blessing of Christ I want to suggest four very simple applications that I think arise directly from this The first is that people who are poor in spirit give up the idea that God owes them you know what I want.
To say that as God's creatures we have a duty to him but it is also easy, especially in our culture, to turn the whole thing around, forget that we have a duty to God and live as if God is the one who has a duty to with us. We have the idea that we can, so to speak. God's job description tells them what to do give you our Ten Commandments this is what we are looking for you for God to provide certain blessings for our family to provide a level of income there and health that will support our chosen lifestyle to isolate ourselves of the sufferings that are undoubtedly experienced by others in this world and then why we so easily slip into the idea that we are the ones who are writing the demands and prescriptions as if they were for God oh God! we start to feel if he doesn't live up to our expectations my friends you know how easily we can all fall into the weird kind of expectation God owes me mentality but do you see how it's written all over the place that pride says I gave him something and he owes me something bigger and better than what I got? come back and while your heart is there you are on a path from bitterness to disappointment rancor and kill blessing blessed are the poor in spirit because theirs is the kingdom of heaven the one who is poor in spirit says well now that I have that I have not received I know I have been able to produce everything and nothing to God for him and he owes me nothing and yet he is the one who has given me all things so people who are poor in spirit have this wonderful liberation that they get from this thing that God owes me better than what I had in my past better than what I have in my present and that God owes me something better in the future to come and it's a wonderful liberation to get away from that place because that's a place where you can't experience God's blessing because the God's blessing does not come to those who list their demands for him, but to the poor in spirit, he dwells with them, second, people who are poor in spirit are not afraid to ask Thomas.
Watson, who I referred to earlier and will refer to, I'm sure, many, many times again, is full of sayings about the Beatitudes, he says the poor are always begging, the poor are always begging and he who is poor in spirit will be much in prayer. That's one of the ways you know where you are in people who feel they have what it takes don't come easily to the place of prayer because what to ask for when you have what it takes may be true for people that may be true of a church like that you feel that is not going to be the place to experience the blessing of God but the poor are always begging and the one who is poor in spirit will be very much in prayer those who know of their own need will reflect that in a life of active prayer there is something in your experience that you would say resembles what you might call an active prayer life well that is one of the records of where you are in relation to your whole spirit before God we read earlier a story that Jesus spoke of two men who prayed and one was a Pharisee and the other a tax collector and it's not interesting that they both actually prayed but what Jesus points out is that there was all the difference in the world between their two prayers. ions and you? notice the difference is that the Pharisee when he prayed simply expressed a focus on himself I thank you that I am not like other men God I thank you that I am not an adulterer I thank you that some of the miserable things that I see in the lives of other people they are not in mine you look at his prayer in the chat of lucas 18 and what is striking is this here is a man who comes to god and never asks for anything that was the last thing you asked of god he was never asked to think he never asked why because he was miles from poverty of spirit and the reality was that even though he was standing there in the temple and saying this prayer that others could hear, he was miles and miles and miles from God, it showed. because he didn't feel the need to ask and then Jesus says that in the corner of the temple there was a guy who didn't even come to the front and didn't raise his head he had his head down he was so aware of his own need he was a tax collector these guys they were known for their many many sins and for good reason and here is this man very much in his conscience aware of his need and he simply says Oh God have mercy on me a sinner and Jesus made this conclusion to the story that must have shocked everyone. everyone who listened at that time and she had still surprised us today says that it was this man and not the other one who went home justified blessed forgiving in peace with God because blessed are the poor in spirit and then Jesus says this for all the The one who exalts himself will be humbled and the one who humbles himself will be exalted, so we've talked about using these Beatitudes as a way of measuring ourselves. a life of prayer in your own experience and you say that the evidence of asking is that the spirit of a person who knows his own need or just a person who believes in God at a distance in the third place and this is very wonderful and only briefly people who are poor in spirit are in a position to receive not just in a position to ask for what flows directly from this, but in a position to receive they see people who feel they have something to offer God always come to God with the hands full lord this is what i want to give you this is what i want to offer you this is what i want to tell you i have done it again thomas watson how can you receive gold when your hands are full of pebbles it is no good i came before god my hands full of all these pebbles of all these little things I've done and I want to make a big deal out of it and God has the gold in his hand but I can't receive it why because my hands are already full so here is the great blessing of the poor in spirit who are not only in a position where it is very, very natural for them to ask, but are also precisely in the position where they can receive, hence in a great old hymn that some of you may know we sing this line nothing in my hands i bring g simply to your cross i cling you can't cling to the cross of jesus if your hands are full only those who come empty handed before god only those who are poor in spirit only those who are self-aware can cling to the cross of Christ and in this way the kingdom of heaven is truly yours when you know you have nothing to offer God you are in a position to receive everything he offers you and for this, of course, the blessing of God rests on the poor in spirit, heaven is theirs because their hands are open to receive it, the last thing remains for today and it is only these people who are poor in spirit. u boast on the cross people who are poor in spirit which they certainly aren't going to boast about themselves but this is what they do, they boast on the cross and of course I'm thinking of Paul's wonderful statement in Galatians and chapter 6 and verse 14 and remember what a brilliant scholar what a multi-talented man Paul was what a spectacular career he had before his conversion and all he gave up to this multi-talented man and say be far from me let me ever boast except in the cross of our Lord Jesus Christ very simply friends the more a man or woman sees in himself the less they will see in Jesus the more you see in yourself the less you see in Jesus sometimes you will wonder you know why people gets so excited about it all you see a lot in yourself you see little in Jesus the more you see in Jesus the less you see in yourself and that is why when we come to worship we want our minds and our hearts and our thoughts and our Our affections are fixed on Jesus.
I will glory in nothing neither gifts nor power nor wisdom but I will glory in Jesus Christ his death and his resurrection why should I earn from his reward? I can't give an answer but I know this with all my heart his wounds have paid my ransom and here in the very center friends is the distinctive difference between the hypocrite and the genuine son of God here is the distinction between the false and the true believer here is the distinction between the religious person who is actually very far from God and the humble penitent with whom God says he will dwell here is the difference between people who are Far from God Giving much importance to themselves and the people who live close to God Give much importance to Christ People who are far from God are always talking about what they are doing for Him People who are close to God are always talking about what He is doing for Him they and so the marshal of Christian camp does not make much of itself its many talents even though it makes a lot of Christ who has not only made and redeemed the same is true for the high flyer in business for the brilliant musician for the technical guru for the political genius and for the mega mother if you walk closely with god you will give great importance to jesus christ that was the id the story of isaiah he saw the emptiness of his own position before god and said i am a man of lips unclean and remember what happened next there was an angel who took an ember from the fire that was on the altar and with some tongs brought it closer and in this vision Isiah sees the ember touching and burning his lips and a voice from heaven reaches him wonderful words your guilt is removed and your sin atoned for that is what happened to this man who was poor in spirit and it is not fascinating that through these same lips that in this vision were touched by the hot embers of the place of sacrifice, the same altar of God It was through these much touched and cleansed lips that the Holy Spirit of God would later give the most compelling and vivid words ever spoken before the cross about what that atonement was. and how it would be fulfilled it was this man poor in spirit who said he was wounded for our transgressions he was crushed for our iniquities the punishment that brought us peace was upon him and by his wounds we are healed God spoke these words through a man who he knew his need and had become poor in spirit certainly this is the very place that gives birth to a life in a ministry that is of lasting use to God people who are poor in spirit do a lot of the cross Lord make me one of these people Father, work your word in our hearts and as we sit today we remember what you are calling us to, so we have set sail to go after what you are calling us and seek to lay hold of this blessing to that end we thank you for the gift of your presence to dwell with the poor in spirit so that the kingdom of heaven may be ours through Jesus Christ our Lord in his name we prayed and everyone said
