Beating 5 Scam Arcade Games with Science

Sep 19, 2022
This is me walking into an

arcade

wearing just your normal everyday backpack, only it's technically not your normal everyday backpack because when I set it up here and then nonchalantly load some balls into the water bottle then play like a good robot and I win. all tickets and that's great but what if i told you i made similar backpacks not only for skee-ball but for this game and this one basically invented gadgets to absolutely master 5 of the most common

arcade

games

including some tricks that cost less than a dollar and we actually work to set world record ticket payouts but we also secretly log data from a bunch of different arcades so I'll teach you the strategies to beat the

games

that give out the most tickets and I'll show you all five games. we found out these are real

scam

s never set foot in another arcade again until you have watched this video in its entirety let's start now i admit the genesis of this video came from me like using my over designed bowling ball that i could control just leaning in because i thought what if i took the same concept and applied it to miniature golf and while that idea could be really helpful in getting a good golf score but no real reward for my efforts which turned my attention to the holy grail of any miniature golf course the arcade it was time to get back all the allowance money i lost as a kid starting first with skee-ball and before we actually see it in action let me first explain how it works because if you remove the backpack you'll find a frankenstein version of a softball pitching machine that we hacked up and modified to run on batteries only then there's a solenoid in here that makes sure the ski balls are released one at a time. hold on so if you turn it on we put a ball in here it shoots the ball like this though the coolest part here is when it's put in the backpack you roll up this pocket to reveal the ball outlet and then you put this bottle of water here as a clever disguise to charge up to three balls at a time now of course if you don't have a secret robot backpack that's how you win this game as a mere human to begin with if you watch the pros play yeah there are skeeball pros who actually aim for the 4,000 point hole, this really makes sense because even if your throw is too weak or too strong, you still score significant points.
beating 5 scam arcade games with science
A common mistake is to take the bait and go all or nothing by aiming for the small. 10,000 point hole in the corner The name of the pros for this only in desperate situations where they are behind and need a lot of points to come back and win. The other great tip is to rest your leg against the base of the machine in the same spot each time and then try and just move your arm, which will make your throws more repeatable and accurate because you're reducing the variables that could lead to air. so if you want to win just follow these tips and practice a lot or you could just go my route then when you're done mastering or if you think one of the workers might be getting suspicious you can just pick up the backpack at any time and walk away with a bunch of tickets on his card.

The following is one of my personal favourites. Basketball In this case, the backpack is used only to smuggle the special mechanism inside due to the untrained eye. This is just normal basketball when, in fact, it's a robot in disguise. Before I show you exactly how it works, you must first understand how. these kits work right under each tire there is an infrared laser and detector and then on the front of the tire on the other side of that metal plate is a reflector so when the laser beam shines straight forward it bounces on the reflector and then on the sensor it's like yeah I can see the lightning so when a ball goes through the hoop it breaks the lightning and the sensor says uh huh I didn't see it for a second at which point it tells the game that adds two points to your total because that means and you must have got a score in engineering we call it a beam break detector and it's exactly the same concept you have as a security feature on your garage door so if you really want to destroy the high score here the ball needs to break the beam then somehow get out of the way for the beam to reconnect and then go back and break the beam over and over again as fast as possible but if think about it You're alright, the entire ball doesn't need to move out of the way, just the part in front. of lightning itself and how you could do it well one way is to 3d print the lower hemisphere of a basketball in two parts joined via some linear guide rods and then add a battery microcontroller and servo motor to make the lower part of the casing can be translated up and down like this you would reconnect the beam and then break it over and over again and log two points each time it happened now you just need a way to grab the edge so you can hang there while doing these shenanigans and if you have some pneumatic pistons attached to a mini pressure inlet controlled by a solenoid valve activated by an rf remote then you could shoot the ball normally and then with the push of a button the piston rods would they would shoot and grab the edge and then once mischief was managed to activate the remote again and they would retract now if you just add another hemi 3d printed sphere on top then glue real basketball skin and when you put it all together it would look something like this now if you don't have a robotic ball here are some tips to help you get the highest score for this game now most importantly you never want to waste time waiting for a ball to roll your way and since these sets normally come in pairs just swipe your card in both sets and then temporarily borrow the second set of balls now this should give you a lot more than you need, so just keep the balls that are less inflated now as the game starts and get into a rhythm where you finish your shot with one hand and then start to grab a replacement ball with the other hand before After your first shot has gone in or if the rim is close and you want to get really extreme, you can go with a two-handed shooting strategy like this guy, but even that strategy is no match for you. to my spherical transformer because when I'm ready to go I just throw the ball with one hand and then hit the remote just as it's about to go in and now the ball just sits there mouthing I just watch those sweet sweet dots rack up And then as soon as the time is up I just push the remote again and the piston rods are tracked and while no one is the wiser I have now engineered my way into a bunch of tickets. and a new lifetime high score next is a very popular game called Quick Drop where you press this button to drop these ping pong balls at the right time and if you get all 50 ping pong balls into the buckets within 22 seconds assigned without missing any shot then you get the mega jackpot but the thing is getting all 50 balls before time runs out there is essentially no room for human air which is good news to me because the backpacks of the Robots don't make human mistakes, now you realize when I get closer I can just put the backpack down and it automatically checks in instead.

The trick here is that we 3d print an exact negative replica of the in-game button housing and this piston rod that pops out and presses the in-game button is attached to the solenoid which is controlled by this arduino microcontroller and tells it the exact time needed to win the game now if you are trying this on your own this is what you need to know to do it successfully in 22 seconds you have to drop four balls in each bucket except two buckets you have to drop five now ,dropping five into these two buckets isn't impossible but the timing is so tight it's really hard to pull it off without them hitting the edge and bouncing now the jackpot starts at 500 ticks ets and every time someone loses it increases by two tickets and every time that happens, the game gives you a little more total time on the clock, so if you ever see the jackpot on more than 625 tickets, there's plenty of time on the clock now. where you only need four balls per cube to win and it's definitely worth trying a few times because that makes it so much easier to pull off; alternatively, if you're too impatient to wait for the jackpot to rise, you can go to school for six years for a mechanical engineering degree and do it this way and then even when the sweet and delicious 554 tickets are added to your mind you can leave discreetly with your backpack in tow for our next game we have the perennial arcade favorite air hockey now this is the trickiest of all builds because if you look closely here at the top there is a hole in the bag for it to look at a camera and then removing the backpack you can see the camera plugs into t has a brain and in this case it's a raspberry pi which is basically like a mini computer instead of just an arduino microcontroller like all the other builds have used So far, the reason this one needs a bit more brain power is because it uses computer vision to track the drive and based on the trajectory story, it makes a prediction and then it sends instructions to turn this servo which is attached to an arm that moves the paddle and protects the goal and perhaps my favorite part of this build is that it obviously won't work if the whole slides and moves all over the place. parts, so we need to anchor it securely in place, but we need to do it quickly and discreetly.

Our solution here is a pair of neodymium toggle magnets, so if you just turn these two knobs, the rare earth magnets. move it into position and attach it to the steel frame of the air hockey table and it's basically cemented in place as you can see here as far as human strategy here playing air hockey can look like total chaos. but there are four simple tricks that will guarantee that you can beat any casual gamer. The first is to hold the paddle this way and not this way, which allows you to really move the paddle and gain extra speed on your strokes.
The second is that for your default defensive position you want your paddle to be out here, not right against the goal here, that's because this reduces the angle and you just have to move the paddle back and forth to this point to protect the whole goal against back and forward if you are against the edge this is the same reason goalkeepers will come out of the goal if there is a breakaway in football even for a bing shot now you just have to move the paddle a small distance diagonally back in this way so that your paddle should always stay within a triangle like this when playing defense and when watching the pros play.
Yes, there are air hockey professionals. You will see them employ these first two tips. The third trick. you'll also see if they try to play for possession, you want to try to muffle your opponent's shot and get possession of the puck so you can set up your own shot, which leads to the last tip, mix up straight shots and burst shots, but try and practice at least one trick shot like this where you hit the puck to the corner and then when it bounces back at you, hit the bank shot to win. This is what the real benefit of my backpack looks like in action now.
The system is that you can be playing with your opponent, but then when you get a phone call or have other important business to attend to, your goal is in good hands and then, whenever you want, you can come back and finish things off with victory assured in hand, just disconnect the two toggle magnets with a twist and you're ready to go and finally we have the ultimate test of strength, the punching bag game now for you. this one more interesting i wanted to find and challenge the guy in the arcade whose muscles look the least like mine so i went up first and shook the 678 out of a possible 999 but then he stepped up and shook an 877 and since it's bigger than 678, it started talking trash, honey, if you spend a little. less time on the computer a little more time in the weight room so that was disappointing but lucky for me I had a trick up my sleeve because it's actually a fake arm to disguise this it's basically a punching arm Bionic Dual Spring Driven -Loaded Pistons To adjust the springs we use a threaded rod and a drill and once under tension they are held in place with a quick release mechanism that I can activate with my finger at the exact moment I i want to drill something and i would rate it. the initial test in the lab is encouraging, it's important to note that you have to follow the rules of this game, there are no side punching, pushing, running, kicking or headbutting, but you will notice that there is no rule against punching gloves spring-loaded piston, so now in my time of puredominance had come I stepped up and rockton 838 which was less than 877 which was disappointing and in retrospect I should have known it's really hard to compete with the human body in terms of things like hitting and throwing because we're so efficient with that mechanic and I have to sacrifice a lot of the speed and momentum of my own arm and body system when using that heavy wrist mounted puncher but you know what a fighter I am and what I lack in muscle mass.
I make up for it with toughness so out of curiosity I took a closer look to see how the machine actually works and it turns out it has a beam brake sensor just like the basketball game as well as that oddly shaped piece of metal it's attached to to the axis. and the punching bag revolves around the lightning it has this little window to hit the sensor you can see the sensor in front view here so the game intelligently measures how many milliseconds the sensor sees the lightning and from that infers how fast it is The bag. tating on the shaft and therefore how hard it was hit and this gave me an idea so I went to the prizes counter and redeemed some of my jackpot tickets I had been stockpiling in exchange for a pez dispenser.
Step one was unwrapping and I ate some fish because they're just delicious and then for step two I removed the head and cut out the arcade card like this and then I stuck it here and then I went and tracked down my new friend my theory was that if you extended the fish the dispenser and the modified card come out like this and then release, the spring force retracts the card and breaks the beam so fast the machine would think it was a lightning fast hit but would it really work and it turns out it did does it? because i maxed out the machine so yeah please use this information responsibly kids now a few years ago i made a video where i visited the carnival and collected data on all the rides and then used physics to expose what carnival games were rigged and then i showed how to beat them so this time instead of carnival i once again bribed some family friends with unlimited slurpees in exchange for them collecting loads of data at some local arcades and also discover which games were

scam

s. which i'll cover in just a minute this is what we found out for starters the most popular games on the arcade were the redemption games rather than the experience games and this is what i mean by redemption games are the games where the goal is to win tickets like coin pushers or this game of plinko or spin the wheel on the other end of the spectrum you have experience games like air hockey skee-ball or racing games it's a trade off because games on this side of the spectrum more tickets give up but it's not as much about the fun of the experience and then in the middle of the spectrum you have games like ping pong drop or hit the clown that have middle of the road ticket payouts but also they are in the middle of the road fun to play now since the games on this side were much more popular they make much more money for the arcade even when factoring in the higher ticket routes we found that for a medium-sized arcade on a busy day, the least popular games were played 25 times and the most popular ones can be played up to 250 times or more with an average game being one dollar, meaning each game wins between 25 and 250 dollars a day or around seven to seventy thousand dollars a year and we finally found out that if your only goal is to win tickets.
Coin-dealing games like this Avengers one seem like the best ROI, but honestly, you can ask one of the workers who are hanging out making minimum wage and they'll probably be pretty cool because they'll probably just do it. do. i'll tell you which ones you watch regularly that pay the best so let's finally get to the really juicy part and talk about which games we found out were basically scams now i have some experience in this area because a few years ago i built my original backpack The robot arcade to master this game would basically feel the light flash a few lights in front of the jackpot light, then hit the button with sub-millisecond precision and then we wouldn't touch anything on b between runs and yet alternate between missing that short like long in other words the time on the jackpot light doesn't match the duration it's on and is very different from all the other lights you can actually test this yourself by picking a random light and miraculously you will find that somehow way i could turn on that random light every time i try now this got me to dig a little deeper and after a bit of digging i was able to locate a copy of the owner's manual at that point i found that the arcade owner could manually set how often a jackpot should be won so this time i was curious what other games were essentially running the same scam in which you think it's a game of skill, but actually the owner of the arcade controls when there are jackpots. won and it turns out that this very popular game called stacker employs the same trick as this other very popular keymaster game and this cut the rope game they are also running the same scam in all three cases i was able to get a copy of their owners manual and every one has language for how the arcade owner can specify how often a jackpot occurs.
I also found many but not all claw machines have language for how it will close at full force. but then back to a much weaker force than what the owner sets, for this reason it's best to try and get the prices closest to the exit hole to minimize the amount of time you stay in the clutches and I call these games rip offs because they present themselves as winnable games of skill when in reality it is essentially a random roll of the dice that is very much against you and, just like in the carnival, the most lucrative games are the ones where the People overestimate their chances of winning because they seem close, but they don't.
In gambling psychology this is not a good thing, this is known as the near miss effect and it will lead to more slot machine play but this is much worse than a slot machine because at least in that case it's known. Now, it doesn't matter how you pull the lever because it's a random chance, and also, those games are regulated, so there's a minimum payout required by law, so for every dollar, say, put into a slot machine, they have to pay out at least 80 cents back to players but for those scam arcade games i just mentioned the default payout rate is on average 20 cents for every dollar you spend but shady arcade owner You could basically set that to zero and no one would know and that would be perfectly legal and that's especially tricky because it's mostly played by kids so if you don't remember anything else try to choose games that avoid any kind of digital winning element that can be tampered with because in In those cases you never really know what your chances are.
However, the games are all great options to at least get a better idea of your actual odds of winning. I've gone through the manual to see all of these and what you see is exactly what you get and I can guarantee some arcades are more It's fair about this than others for example my home arcade here refuses to carry any of the games that can be rigged against you which I think is great, however if you see this my only suggestion is that going forward you probably shouldn't institute. backpacks allowed policy and may not allow people to redeem tickets for pez dispensers either.
This is a daddy finder. It was created by a dad who is also a pilot so that his children will always know which way and how far he is when he travels. world and this contraption feeds your dog with the flip of a lever and was successfully funded as a six figure kickstarter campaign, so what do these and tens of thousands of other projects like them have in common? Well, they were all designed by friends who took my creative engineering class at studio.com, the best part of being a creator and an engineer is that they can come up with clever solutions to their real life challenges, like earning more tickets in the arcade. . like a superpower, but it's a superpower you can learn and I love seeing others catch that spark, which is why a few times a year I teach a month-long creative engineering course and registration for the last session is open right now. could be like a waiting brand, didn't you just release the crunch labs building box, that monthly toy given to a kid where you build it together with them on video and then explore all the juicy physics that make it work, why do you do it now?
Let's go back to talk about this class and it's like I did it but the problem is we sold the certified ton of subscriptions we had in stock in less than a week so I don't really want to talk about it until we have more in stock which which is sure to happen in time for the holidays, so if you want to guarantee you'll get one for Christmas before they're all gone again, you'd better get on the waiting list at crunchlabs.com ASAP and now you might be thinking well but what is the difference ce between the box and your class and the answer is the crunch lab monthly build box its kind of a first step its a monthly build i guide you where i teach you to think like an engineer so if you are a teenager everything from very young to very young is perfect for you, you have to be on that waiting list, but if you are a teenager to very old, the creative engineering class is perfect for you because the class is more open It goes on and covers my complete engineering design process, from coming up with an idea to prototyping and completion of construction and then giving it character.
I show you everything I'm thinking, everything I'm doing and I do it three times. Over the course of a month you will see me design and create three totally original builds and I will guide you through the completion of three creative builds of my own and this is an online class so you can take it anywhere and work around your schedule but its totally immersive and intensive so whether you are a complete beginner or a seasoned engineer this class has been designed to get to know you wherever you are and then improve your skills so go to grover studio.com or use the link on the video description to see what other people said about their experience then sign up and i'll see you in class thanks for watching
