#Ayotzinapa: Una historia de horror que involucra al Ejército y la PF (Audio completo)

Feb 27, 2020
In investigative journalism, you don't choose the stories, the stories choose you. They come like a burning ember that falls into the palm of your hand like a gust that hits you in the face until you open your eyes and wonder what is happening. Here the story that gave rise to this book came to me on Monday, September 29, 2014 while I was having coffee at the University of California in Berkeley. I had just arrived at the San Francisco fence where I was beginning a journey to find a way to return to Mexico where my home is in my life but at the same time the place that was killing me little by little, as has happened to dozens of Mexican journalists, the federal government forced me to leave after negligently allowing the attacks against me to increase. family and against my sources of information, it was not an easy decision to leave Mexico.

I arrived at the University of Berkeley as a fellow in the investigative reporting program led by journalists Lowell Berman and Tim Mackay, who accepted me with an investigation proposal on the operations of a Mexican cartel. In the United States, however, my project took an unexpected turn on the night of September 26, 2014. The disappearance in Iguala Guerrero of 43 students from the Raúl Isidro Burgos rural normal school had been swallowed by the earth. The official version of the terrible events began to be articulated quickly. and obvious absurdities I soon understood that the story of the 43 students will be a key story for Mexico because it not only revealed the brutality of the disappearance of these young people but also the brutality of the government itself was quickly revealed in trying to silence what had been happening and creating another truth different from what had really happened during the last two years I have been immersed in this research at first it was sponsored it was financed by the University of Berkeley in California itself my first articles that were published in the magazine Proceso at univisión and telemundo were even supervised by the university editors who demanded high journalistic rigor to continue financing the investigation, so in December 2014 I was the first journalist to reveal that the army and the federal police had been present during the attacks there was a place called c4, which was a police center with a police coordination center that was coordinated mainly by the Mexican army by elements of the 27th infantry battalion and that for at least four hours before the attack against the students they had been monitoring the two gold star trucks that had left on September 26, 2014 at 6 in the afternoon from the school campus in Ayotzinapa heading to Iguala to kidnap some buses and use them for the October 2 protest was this first report that led to Today, in what is the book, the real night, the inconsistencies of the official version were clear to me.

In fact, there is a core point that is what really triggers me to start doing this research. For more than 11 years, I have dedicated myself to covering the topic of drug trafficking organized crime during these years I have had direct contact with different members of the cartels and through various interviews and documents I have understood a little how the dynamics of drug cartels work when they are controlling a plaza in different parts of Mexico, what I found in the first weakness, the first absurdity that the federal government says that triggered my interest in the case and that indicated to me that the government was hiding and lying information was when they said that there is a criminal group called very dangerous united warriors according to the government of Mexico but that had never appeared in any of the hundreds of files that I had reviewed for so many years and that supposedly this criminal group united warriors had control over the city of Iguala and what in retaliation because the students were supposedly trying to attack or boycott an event of the wife of the municipal president josé luis encompasses supposedly the mayor together with united warriors would have ordered the attack the hunt the murder of several students the disappearance of the 43 this story that the federal government has told From the beginning to date, it is the story that triggers my investigation.

No drug cartel detonates or burns down its own plaza. That is a fundamental rule of drug cartel plaza control. It is common for a drug cartel to go and set fire. or generate problems in the other's square, but a drug cartel that has total control of the city, as the government said, which had united warriors, was impossible, dynamiting its own gold mine was absurd, this is how based on the official version I travel to Iguala and during these two years I have walked the main streets where the attacks have occurred, I have spoken with hundreds of people, witnesses, ordinary people who were in the streets that night because this attack did not happen at all on a desolate street or in some rancheria far from the sight of others, the truth is that in Iguala there are hundreds of witnesses who saw what happened who for months kept quiet about what they saw and what they suffered and yet after insisting a lot with them they began to talk and began to tell what really happened and that is what the book of the true night narrates, but not only the

stories, the

story that was experienced that night, the desperate screams of the students as a plea, they knock on the doors of the neighbors who They opened like the traumatized neighbors today with a great feeling of guilt did not open the door but one can also discover how there were at least eight families who did open the door despite the armed persecution that existed against the students at that time even though the neighbors knew that on the street chasing students there were not only municipal police but practically all the law enforcement forces were involved in this manhunt and yet they opened the doors and managed to save more than 60 students and thanks to the fact that they survived they were able to tell the story they were able to reveal to the world the violence of which they had been victims that night, later I also had access and was able to speak directly.

I was the first journalist to speak with the main accused of supposedly having orchestrated and having been the alleged material authors of the attack against the students. I am referring to municipal police officers of The same as the municipal police of Cocula and the mayor José Luís himself, including his wife, who I was able to interview, I was able to interview alleged members of the United Warriors, I was able to interview the relatives of the alleged criminals who had murdered and burned the students in the copula garbage dump, according to the official version, these people wrote various letters, a mix of various letters, telling me what they had done that night but also the conditions in which they had been detained and that is how in my reports I began to reveal the torture that had been the instrument used by the government. of Enrique Peña Nieto to try to solve this case and hide the truth at all costs throughout these two years, what I find is a terrible story, it is a photograph, a snapshot of really what the current situation of the country is, on the one hand We have the horrors that occurred tonight at the hands of different levels of the federal government but on the other hand we have the horrors that have multiplied over two years: torture, illegal detentions, murders, uprisings and different ways in which the state has tried to fabricate some culprits.
To continue protecting the true architects of what happened that night we have a president of the Republic who, instead of making an intelligent, politically costly but intelligent decision and immediately putting the federal and military police who participated in the disappearance of the attack on Instead of doing that, what is done is a whole state operation to try to silence that, even going so far as to say, on many occasions, there are worse human rights violations than those that were committed that night between the tortures, the stories that I heard about the tortures suffered. for the detainees I have seen many files I have seen and interviewed many people who were victims of torture I had never heard a horror story like the ones I heard in this case the vast majority of the detainees were sexually abused rape was used as part of a torture mechanism the vast majority of men and women the vast majority of detained men and women have burns on their body due to electric touches not only on their genital parts there are some years who even have some burns on the palate or nose in the nostrils as part of the torture one can imagine the impact that this type of actions can have physically the vast majority continue today today many of the detainees who were tortured continue with serious consequences of the torture they suffered there is another part of the story that is the entire story of impunity, the majority of public officials who participated in the persecution and disappearance of the students that night have had important promotions or have been absolutely protected by the state by the government of Enrique Peña Nieto - one One of the most emblematic cases, perhaps the most outrageous, is that of Colonel José Rodríguez Pérez, who was in charge of the 27th Infantry Battalion, whom the Government of Mexico, the PGR, has interrogated on at least three occasions.
I have read the ministerial statements of the Colonel. Each statement is different from the other, there are severe contradictions between all the soldiers who have testified before the PGR and the colonel, as a reward for his performance that night, was promoted to brigadier general last year in a ceremony about which nothing is known and He currently works very closely with Salvador Cienfuegos, finishing the national defense in a luxurious office in the headquarters headquarters in Mexico City. Other officials who have participated have absolute impunity. For example, there are two elements of the federal police, Victor Manuel Colmenares Campos and emanuel perez arispe two federal police officers who were present at the disappearance of the normalistas and even have preliminary investigations already opened against them and yet the two were taken from Iguala to protect them, one is in Veracruz, the other is in a screen plan and they are still working As federal police officers, they are still supposed to be responsible for protecting citizens when what they did that night was attack the students and cover up their disappearance.
Another key official that night is Luis Antonio Dorantes Macías, the head of the federal police, equal to An official whose name I revealed and my first investigations and who resigned barely a month after the events in Iguala and was today calmly in San Luis Potosí absolutely unpunished was called to testify by the PGR more than a year after the events and in the two ministerial statements that have been made to him have also incurred in severe contradictions. Another of the key figures not only in what happened this night of September 26 in Iguala but also in the last two years is Thomas Seddon de lúcio who at that time when they occurred The events in Iguala were the head of the criminal investigation agency, his boys, the federal ministerial police under the orders of Toma Cerón, were among the first to take to the streets that night, little is known about this in the documents to which I had access. and from the beginning they began to distort the investigation, important evidence began to disappear that was fresh that night and that was essential to clarify the situation and Tomás was a complaint during these two years until just a few weeks ago, the main person in charge of this investigation who has been absolutely distorted during these two years of investigation I was able to discover that the federal government was a substantial active part of what happened that night and that it was the army that was at least Colonel José Rodríguez Pérez and two special squads of the 17th battalion who are were the main responsible for what happened against the students and the government has been protecting them since then, I have been able to find out after many interviews I was able to find the criminal group that really was the actor or the detonator of what happened that night according to this version of this criminal group that has nothing to do with the group of united warriors or with the reds or with any of the groups mentioned so far by the federal government according to this version I was able through my research I was able to understand what the criminal group that really had control over that area at that time, I found contact with an informant within this criminal group who told me what had really happened that night until now, nothing that the government has said makes sense until now At the moment there is really no motive to explain the government has explained to us no motive that indicates why the attack against the students because of the five trucks in which they were traveling, only the students who were traveling in two trucks disappeared because the other normalistas survived because they were missing until now there is no version or any explanation about it.
I was looking for these answers to this question that throughout my investigation still did not have a clear answer. I was able to identify very early in my investigation that there were two gold star trucks that had been the target that night of those two cannonsThe 43 and normalistas disappear these two trucks had been the two trucks monitored by the federal government since their departure from Ayotzinapa days before these these buses when they were kidnapped by the students there was an entire operation by the war government and the federal police to try to prevent them from The students particularly stole these two trucks.
All the information indicated to me that these two trucks were key. According to the version that comes from this criminal group, there was a shipment of heroin in these two trucks with a value of about 2 million dollars that night, the boss who controlled the plaza and its surroundings was notified that the trucks had been stolen and that they were in the city with the cargo. According to this version, which I repeat comes from this criminal group, he would have called the colonel directly. Rodríguez Pérez, who was supposedly on his payroll, as well as other PGR officials in Iguala, as well as some federal police officers, as well as some elements of the ministerial police of the state of Guerrero, as well as some elements of the municipal police. equals because, as happens with the criminal groups that really control the plaza, they need to control all the agencies and all the law enforcement agencies to really operate with steel, but the boss decides to call the only entity, the only person who had the power to coordinate that night an operation and that person or this power or that organization in the 27th infantry battalion that was above the other agencies that were from the federal, state and municipal government that were present in the city and it is this field that supposedly ordered the colonel recover his drugs under the threat that the colonel's life was at stake and this is how the colonel decides to set up an entire operation to stop the trucks and be able to recover the drugs according to the version that I have received there was no At first there was an intention to kill the students or to disappear.
The only instruction there was was to recover the two million dollars in heroin when the recovery of the drug is being carried out in these two gold star trucks, one on Juana Street. Álvarez, another in the peripheral area near Pala de Justicia, presumably according to this version, the students who were on board these buses realized that they were taking drugs and this is how the army, together with the other agencies, decided that there could be no witnesses and It is at that moment between ten thirty and eleven fifteen on the night of September 26, 2014 that the decision is made to disappear the witnesses of the 43 normal students who are now missing in the context of writing this book about the true night. of equals in the last months of writing the book my last months of investigation because during all this time there has not been a day in which I have stopped investigating the case, these 43 missing boys are an important case because it could be any of our children because it reflects the vulnerability of each citizen of this country, a vulnerability in the hands of the state when we find when I find in the investigation that it is the state itself that attacks these students and that it is the state itself that has committed worse crimes to cover up that crime.
One realizes that the situation of the 43 students, since the appointments, can be the situation of any of us at any moment at any time in the context of this research, finishing carrying it out, there is a source of information that lets me know of the existence of a key document that until this moment has wanted to be or has been hidden by orders of the presidency of the republic the pgr has in its hands two key investigations about the investigation itself carried out by the pgr of the events that occurred against the 43 students, these two investigations one totally concentrated on taking Cerón de lucio and his performance and the other is a whole file where it talks about each of the volumes that make up the file of the disappearance of the normalistas and in this own file of the pgr practically carried out by an honest prosecutor a brave prosecutor and it would have to be said that during this investigation there were very few public officials who really decided to do their job and one of those few public officials was César Alejandro Flórez Chávez who was general visitor of the PGR who proposed Arely Gómez Recently, the attorney general of the republic carried out an internal investigation, an audit, a legal audit of the investigation carried out by the PGR in order to discover the inconsistencies, the irregularities that existed in the case, and if there were none, then why not make it clear that there were none?
According to this document, it was essential to carry out this investigation because the PGR itself estimates that in a short time before or after leaving the government, Mr. Enrique Peña Nieto could be subject to a trial in an international court. The objective of this internal investigation was to clean up in advance the government its mistaken and deviated investigation to prevent Enrique Peña Nieto - the government of Mexico could be brought before an international court is the purpose that was the motivation for which it was decided to do this important investigation and what I find myself in each of these more than 1000 pages are conclusions similar to mine in a completely parallel investigation in an investigation that even comes from the government itself in this investigation in its conclusions it is ordered to investigate Captain José Martínez Crespo for his alleged links with crime organized, it is ordered to investigate the federal police, not only Víctor Manuel Colmenares Campos and Emmanuel Pérez Arispe, but all other federal police officers, it is being ordered to investigate their weapons, it is being ordered to investigate the army's weapons under investigation in my investigation as a journalist I was able to find that at two crime scenes, one on Juana de Álvarez Street and the other on Santa Teresa Road, where a bus that had identical characteristics to the two trucks that loaded the drugs was attacked, cartridges were found that could only be found in these two places. belong that only belonged rather cartridges were found that only corresponded to the weapons tonight only carried by the Mexican army and in these cartridges scattered in the streets more than 19 cartridges in your ass comes the brand fcc which is a cartridge factory through a investigation using the transparency law, the Sedena confirms to me that only the Mexican army has access to these cartridges of this caliber and of this brand, no private person, no one else can have access to these cartridges other than the army that was on the scene of this visitation in this In the results of the general inspectorate, an investigation is ordered into the weapons that the army was carrying tonight and a very specific investigation is ordered into the entire 27th infantry battalion and all the soldiers who were active that night to really discover what their role was during That night in this investigation, in this visit, Duría found exactly what I found in my investigation, the PGR diverted all attention to the alleged criminal group Guerreros Unidos and forgot all the other evidence and elements that clearly indicated that the events had occurred in another way. and that the material and intellectual authors came from the federal government, specifically from the Mexican army and the federal police, despite the fact that there are more than a hundred detainees supposedly involved in the attack against the students of Ayotzinapa and the disappearance of 43 of them.
The government of Mexico has not been able to truthfully explain what happened that terrible night in Iguala and has not found the whereabouts of the organists. Instead of providing some certainty, the identified remains of Alexander Mora today represent a deep and dark concern, the lesson that this case has left Mexico should not be forgotten any of us could be one of the 43 also of those arbitrarily detained and infamously tortured it is imperative to find the normalistas and put to trial the true responsible those who ordered those who executed those who covered up and those who from the highest level protected the cover-ups and perpetrators, it is not only an issue of basic justice for the families who desperately search for their loved ones, it means giving an example of justice to a country that must get out of this deep hole of corruption impunity and violence the right to the truth is a fundamental right that must be fought for every day
