Attempting my NHRA / Sportsmans License in a Turbo Fox Body!
Jun 01, 2021hello welcome back to the vice grip garage today we're at cordova raceway with the bull the
turbo
foxbody
mustang and i'm going to try to get my sportsman'slicense
which has brought bright stars and stripes the paperwork ran out the gears in the car i got it's going to turn to technology real quick ask them to take a look at everything then we're going to go back and get ready and do what john is here again helping doug is running andy is going to be driving the gto today is going to be so much fun lots of action I think I have to get six total passes, but they're doing a competition today, so we may have to sneak in between rounds.John's favorite color. in a bowl got her through inspections no issues in tech we are adjusting the tire pressures right now we are going to double check the fluids things like that we also had to adjust the seatbelts a bit they were kind enough to put this big seat for me but of course every time you get in a new car I guess even if the seat changes or not you have to put on a harness to set it up and then I chose a different screen in the aisle tech there's only one big tack and, uh, just running. all the buttons and switches and everything it does we have a boost controller here from one to twelve hopefully we'll end up at 14 by the end of the day race week the bulk might actually get some arm restraints and just remove them in the window netting all together because you actually know these fox bodies are pretty tight and I'm a pretty big guy so I don't It fits me well, but that's a small thing, you know. but I'm really excited that they're in an eighth today so my first three passes which makes sense anyway if you're running a quarter trying to get your
license
it's supposed to be a half pass like this we'll head to the stage here. in just a minute get it we prep up and do some runs head to the prep lanes we haven't really heard a proven tune yet so we're just going to go here and say hey we're trying to do what we do and see if we can uh start working here we got five passes to do today a 3 30 3 8 or 2 8 and uh two four quarters hopefully so let's see what we can do here real quick let me know um man that was a great experience i want to say thank you because i haven't said it enough thanks to doug andy and brian everyone at motion raceworks this car is insane and i'm delighted to drive it well on the first pass it was a 177 60 foot and a 6 42 8 miles to 115. um, I think that's the foot alarm sound.I think this parameter said wrong, it's just 140. let it cool down and check everything, yeah I've got kind of an oil drip on this side of the smoke, we can see, we'll mess with that a little bit, see what we can find. alright im gonna flip that way two out of five down thats an absolute blast and i can see these fast teams getting addictive thats absolutely insane its almost like its in slow motion to be honest but let's calm things down i got some oil on the windshield we need to look something's leaking here it could be the brake master actually i might overfill it yesterday but let's check that reset the pressure of the tires and then see when we can sneak in I have three more passes and uh we need to build this momentum up a little bit I guess I just tossed my back out I'm pretty sure on the first one so that's okay we keep going you know I see something right away so it's a little wet under the
turbo
I know we lapsed it hot so we had a little more air in the tires than we wanted we're about 18 so about 3 30 more or less, I began to approach towards the center to there, but I didn't.I don't want to lose the worst form by letting her out, so I stayed. on it but man it's a lot of fun we just checked everything huh I was getting a little rattling there about mile eight 100 115 we raised the front end a little bit and the wheel bearings were just a little bit loose and that's probably very typical they were brand new and probably sat in the race a little tight looked above the rest the car added a little bit of preload on the right rear sprue side because it came out a little for me right i mean no it was bad but it was enough where i lifted i didn't know what was going to happen so i hope we figured it out and it's nice and great now we're going to build momentum you know we're gonna give it a whirl and see if i can hang in there and do a good eighth of a mile.
I need to do better for sure in this race and then I have two quarters to come after that where I really have to let it hang out. this is probably my last practice run before i have to figure this out but i'm going to head to the stage again and take it for another rip hmm this thing hooks like a red devil fish door that felt really good mate , so we were heading to the stage rails again and we heard the fuel pump. changing kind of indicative of a spark plug filter or fuel pump going off so just to make sure we got the pump out because I didn't want it to go lean in the middle of my pass that's not good obviously and when we separated this pump this positive has a broken jacket and it was flat and touching the pump housing and probably intermittently shorting which was causing the fuel pump to do weird things we can't really fix it here right now we just bend it out of the so it doesn't it touches and we just hope we get one more fast pass then we'll cut it yeah heat shrink or weld it back put it back together but we only need five seconds at this point so I'm going to throw this again while you both tickle the rafters They'll pre-stage first and start cranking up the rpm to be ready, uh, one thirty three sixty foot on that one and five seventy seven and I had to pedal there.
I got off the line a little bit and then back to the On the way back the temp kept going up it didn't get hot it just went up like 190 but usually around 140 yeah when I pulled up I thought the fan wasn't working and, indeed, it was not so. There was a piece of hose like this. That was just lying around inside here or we somehow picked it up on the track, but it basically got stuck in the fan, but luckily I just blew the fuse and we changed it while the fans came back on. I have one more pass, that's all.
I have to do it and I got the license I guess I didn't have to do the quarter they weren't going to change anything they said we could do it in the eighth I really wanted to do the quarter but we can extrapolate and do the math of additionals and other things to figure out what t the fourth is going to be but having a lot of fun we're going to go see some other cars for a bit and then we'll be sneaking back in for one more run just finished my last run we've got the tora loaded up I kind of hurried myself I was just Thinking about the bush lattes but it was good enough it's all I needed to get the license he signed in the tower so I officially have my sportsman's license which just doesn't make sense so watch out I'm fired up ready for race week the rocky mountains i hope to improve learn better there is so much these guys have so much experience and knowledge it is amazing the car is fast there is a lot of car left i just have to I had to figure out how to use it but again Big thanks to Motion Raceworks.
If you haven't watched that channel, you should. They built that car in eight days and it's an absolute animal, you know, just like the name suggests. Pay attention. start of my trip see you soon thanks for seeing you
