Ariana Grande Spills All the Tea About Her Album Title and Release
Dec 22, 2021-How is the
album
going? Are we close to analbum
? -Yeah. My album is coming this summer. -Is? That's great! -Yeah. -Okay, tell me more, who produces? Who are you working with? -I worked with Pharrell and Max. -Nice! -And ILYA and Savan. And it was a really incredible experience. It's called "sweetener." -You're dropping all the things that everyone wants to hear. It's called "sweetener." -I know, I've been gone too long. I have much more, I want to say it all. -Yes, go ahead. Tell me everything. It's called "sweetener." -Okay, then yes. -Why is it called “Sweetener”? -Because it is about bringing light to a situation or to the life of someone or someone else who brings light to your life or sweetening the situation, yes. -Everyone needs a little sweetener.Yes Yes Yes. -Can you leave us some song tracks? -I look like a piece of gum. Alright? -It's not like that... you look like the most beautiful piece of gum. It's fantastic. Don't change anything. You look great. -Alright. -Can you tell us any songs from the album? -Can. Should I just spit it out? -No, I mean... You're telling everyone. Spoilers! Spoiler alert! You're about to hear everything. -Yeah. -Give us a pair. -My fans know that I have a song called "R.E.M." because I have a big mouth and I went on Twitter and I just tweeted a bunch of lyrics the other day.
I was like, "Morning, I'm bored. Okay, here's a song." So I spilled a lot of tea on that. Okay, and then there's another song called "The Light Is Coming" that I love. - -Oh, ooh, unh, they said. I heard someone make that noise. -Yeah. -And then there is one called "God is a Woman" that I love. -Wow. They already know these songs. They're not even... -We hid a song list in the video, but it's not in order. -Oh. -So yes. My fans have been... Good stuff! -Yes, oh, thank you. -Can you tell us something we don't know?
What is the first song? -Okay, so the first song... well, it's like an introduction. It's called "Raindrops." And it's... -What's the story? -"Yaas!" I just heard someone say. -Yaaah. -Thank you. -What is the story behind “Raindrops”? -It's a really crazy story actually. I get goosebumps every time... It's crazy. So that's actually it, it's like a cover of a little part of a song from the '50s called "An Angel Cried." And I... I had it like in my head. I woke up, we were very close to finishing the album and it was in my head.
And I said to Max, "You know what? Let me record this little a cappella part. Let's go in and do it and maybe we can cut it up and sample it or something. Or, like, make a beat out of it or whatever." Anyway, I do it, and then Max said, "Let's not touch that, leave it alone." And that's how the album begins. And I went to check who wrote it. I just... I mean, I was curious, you know? And it turns out this is crazy. Everyone will think I'm lying, but my grandfather's best friend, who I grew up with in Boca, Charlie Calello, wrote it with Bob Gaudio from The Four Seasons.
And that really gave me goosebumps. -Wow, so your grandfather knew him? -Yes very good. -I knew the writer. -Really good. -It's almost like... it's almost like a sign, that he tells you. -Yes, he said: "Okay, the album is ready, girl." -Yes, exactly. -Yeah. -And has your grandmother heard the album? -She has done it, yes. -Nonna. -Nonna has heard it. -Nonna. -Yeah. -I love Nonna very much. -Yeah. -Hello Nona. -Hello Nona. -We always say "hello." Hello Nona. -Hello Nona. -What does Nonna say about the album? -She loves "God is a woman." She loves it very much. -That's her problem. -That's her favorite.
I'll ask her something like, "Hey, Nonna, what do you think of, you know, my single? How do you like 'No Tears Left To Cry'?" And she's like, "I love it. But you know, Ariana, can we listen to 'God is a Woman' again?" And I said, "Nonna, it's okay." -I love Nonna. -She...you know, she has her favorites. She's not subtle about it. -Now you said summer, you implied summer. -Yeah. -But are you also going to do something cool, like on the 20th? -Oh yes yes. Oh yes yes. Okay, so I told Jimmy, I told Jimmy, I told Jimmy. -Yeah. -Since I'm not going to announce the date of the album, I... still, you'll have it in like two seconds, but...
I'm going to do something special every day the 20th. -So what... what? -Yeah. -So every 20 you do something special. -Yeah. -Can you give an example? - There are about three twentieths left until the big event, but, you know, I just told you when it will be, but... - Yes. - Yes. -So basically, wow, okay. So I'm doing the math. -So basically, yeah, okay. -Okay, yes, this is very exciting. -Okay, don't say, okay, okay. -Alright. -Yeah. -But what happens this month on May 20? -I'm performing at the Billboard Awards. -Hey, that's it! Alright. Good. I haven't seen you...
I probably haven't seen you in over a year, and I haven't seen you since the tragic events that happened in Manchester. And I know it's hard for everyone, hard for the fans and hard for you. And I know you haven't done any interviews, and I understand that. I just wanted to thank you for coming to our show and for being strong. And for entertaining and for showing up and coming back to Manchester and doing a charity event. I thought it was phenomenal. -Thank you. And I just... I think you're very strong. -Thank you. -And so great. -Thank you. -To do that...
You... You wrote an essay online, and I just wanted to read a couple of lines of what you wrote and I thought they were beautiful. You said: "We will not let hate win. Our response to this violence must be to come together more, help each other, love each other more, sing louder, and live with more kindness and generosity than before." Thank you. Thanks my friend. Thanks for saying that. Thanks for being here.
