APPLE AIRPODS PRO: 2 Professional Audio Engineers Trying Them For the First Time

APPLE AIRPODS PRO: 2 Professional Audio Engineers Trying Them For the First Time
I'm double noise-canceling everything the introvert special hey friend Brandon here if you didn't know I've been a

professional

audio

engineer for about 15 years now and my most nerble artists I've mixed is dustin kensrue from thrice and I'm joined by an even better

audio

engineer William Caleb Parker regularly I mix this band called scary pockets you should find

them

on YouTube it's kind of like postmodern jukebox meets both Beck and also Pomplamoose and I just mixed a both back live record if you are interested in hearing some of his work there are links down below in the description links him some videos up here and yeah go show him some luck we wanted to see as two

professional

audio

engineers

what it was like to use

them

cuz have you used the air pods nowhere like even though there's no ones I haven't even thought about using air pots before okay why I really love the sound of wires sound like I think the

audio

going through copper I don't know I just feel like the air probably just doesn't doesn't cut it yeah so you're probably thinking that maybe this doesn't sound that great I have a feeling that we're probably compromising something well let's find out open it up by the way I already unbox this on my this is Tex ASMR unboxing channey ho how do you feel about in that video about me having any similar channel III don't get the thing I don't get the neck tinglies but like some people do whatever...
apple airpods pro 2 professional audio engineers trying them for the first time
it's a new channel it's not serious the card up here link in description you know drill the

first

thing about air pods

first

of all is the click mmm that sounds good ooh so I got a magnet in there oh do you feel richer oh yeah this makes me feel like tons of money what's interesting I don't know if you noticed this every single

time

you've been opening it it's been popping up this little screen here so what the nice things about having air pods with your iPhone is how easy it is to connect to it so we'll just click on the thing does its fancy little three do you think Oh and it gives you a little tutorial okay so we can take one out there are actually little controls on here they both have controls or just the just the right one both of

them

oh these are just the standard little guys like you'd see on Ultimate Ears or something like that to dare you see what's good about it is that there's an h1 chip in there and so that's what makes it like you connect really fit like fancy like oh there's an

apple

thing because this connected over bluetooth did you have to like set

them

up beforehand no that's that's the setup I don't over set that up before oh so you never use this with your phone I've never set up air pods to my phone ever in my life really yeah okay so if you're walking down a crowded street and there's a bunch of air pods like do they use your switch phone use wires dude it's the initial setup...
apple airpods pro 2 professional audio engineers trying them for the first time
so if you haven't know get your phone it'll do that oh okay cool the h1 chip allows you to have ambient EQ on there so we'll talk about that in a moment and then something called NC so

audio

noise cancellation do you know what that is I don't owe in teresting I I have guesses but I don't know yeah so it's kind of like when you have your your headphones or earbuds in your ear and you have that ambient noise around you right okay so what's happening is it's listening to that and then it's canceling it out oh is using phase cancellation okay so if you don't know what phase cancellation is it's essentially you have

audio

waves and they have their hills and their valleys so to speak they go up and down and what you do is if you take that

audio

source and you duplicate it but you invert it it cancels out mostly it's not always perfect no there's little artifacts are there but that's the general idea behind ian's your

audio

noise cancellation so it's gotta have microphones on their tour something like that as well crazy which that makes sense so in

audio

engineer world I have there's like three main types of headphones but the ones that are closest to noise cancelling are called close back it's making it so like your environment is actually isolated you know like the lawnmower actually there are a set of headphones that's basically like this big old red lawnmower ones but then they have they have these these...
apple airpods pro 2 professional audio engineers trying them for the first time
75 oh six is the speakers from these guys went into those lawnmower headphones and they basically do the same thing but that's really cool because with the bow stuff like you don't have to have quite as much stuff it doesn't have to be as bulky and thick like the way that you cancel sound is through right in city yeah so that's the Bose QuietComfort the other common one is a Sony WH 1000x m3 is fast named ever suis let's have you put these on

first

okay so you know it's like and these have the what's it called an ENT alright that is really bizarre yeah yeah and then if you lift it up then that's what I normally sound like yeah that is a little bit too much for this man this is really isolating you feel like any pressure a little bit okay so my buddy used to work at a company called sure which is an

audio

company they make lots of microphones and headphones and stuff but they have a thing called an anechoic chamber you've probably been in a lot of rooms that sound really good but this thing is different than that this thing is so isolating and you feel like you're all by yourself so me and my buddy we're in this room and he was saying stuff I didn't realize this but like the back of your head he fit he turned away from me and I could barely hear what he was saying but I was like hearing all of the

audio

through the back of his head because what he was saying out of his mouth couldn't reflect off walls or anything it was...
listening through his head it's crazy it's crazy yeah like people make noise like you'd never be able to like make something that was like that but those things like the isolated nests kind of feels a little bit like an anechoic chamber it's kind of going that direction it's actually not super comfortable but I can imagine if you're on a plane that would be I got fly pretty regularly that would be kind of Awesome that's what they're kind of advertising is a benefit putting on play yeah when you're out and about and things like that got it what's really crazy though is that it's a little package now you were talking about closed back headphones right right what's interesting about this one is there's a Portland oh so they're actually not a closed back earbud so to speak right there's a little port here so that you can have that reduced pressure and you're really what's happening is it's shooting

audio

into ear and the inverse of the outside

audio

that's what's really happening really yeah but when you have that it's creating this pressure and it feels really weird so most the

time

I don't like inci headphones or earbuds like that supposedly that port is supposed to make it more comfortable okay it's also an area for a microphone to listen to the ambient environment right and do that whole reverse thing going on there and there's even another microphone that is pointing inside of...
your ear canal and so that it can tell what is the remnants of the outside

audio

and what needs to cancel even more so it's updating 200

time

s per second whoa that's really bad that's way faster than you can hear that's really really crazy like we were talking about when you are flipping a phase or inverting a phase it's not always perfect they're little artifacts there so having that inside microphone I would imagine we'll find out is to clean up that last 10% of in terms of its cancellation does it cancel out the sound of your own voice while you're talking no all right you want to pay cool let's do it I don't even know what it sounds like he's using it before me these are actually pretty comfy oh oh there we go okay can can you hear me a little bit a little bit okay but not very much so it's actually canceling oh yeah it sounds like you're through like an old

time

y radio without the distortion let's uh bring up something on music bed let's bring up another friend will bring up Hannah Parra if you you've been watching this channel a bit you know that she was in one of my videos watch that card up here you know the thing the thing you know sound good I can't hear what you're saying whoa I mean I can I can tell that you're saying something but I have no idea what words they are so the question is does the sound quality of the music sound better with the ANC off we're on because some

time

s when you...
turn on a and see the quality of the

audio

sounds pretty bad so right it's different this is a little more full with it off realistically as far as usable sound quality goes like if you're just doing regular listening it's pretty negligible honestly if you were in like a louder environment would it be more intense maybe I don't know another we obviously can't test that out because we're in this other mode the transparency actually should imply Wow is that weird oh yeah this is like hearing aid mode do you feel like you can actually hear me better it's like superhuman hearing yeah it's a little weird it sounds a little flat I don't have as much sense of direction so because it's amplifying everything right yeah which is just a weird ears thing so one thing that that's a bad thing to have with no it's not mono it's definitely coming out of ya see hey hey hey hey no yeah it's definitely it's definitely picking up different well that makes sense too because you got two microphones you got one in both years so it's doing a cumulative thing but the fact that it's actually calculating that and doing it is kind of amazing yeah it's actually there's a lot of noise in there right oh I can hear you well yeah it's pretty cool alright but the thing is it sounds a little more flat though right it's like a little more mid forward which is what you want if you want to hear somebody that's like we're...
all that voice stuff is happening yes the transparency actually sounds more natural than I was expecting oh yeah when would you use this okay so Jonathan Morse and I had a really good tweet about this if you're going up to like a cash register don't be a DB DB like a decibel oh yeah a decimal and take out your your ear pods you don't be a human being and interact with other people and stuff like that but you can squeeze it and change the setting to transparency and then you can actually hear what's going on around you so that's another thing you can do is like you can keep it in maybe you have your your announcements on on the airplane this is to the announcements on an airplane switch it through all three modes you press once you can play or pause music press once when a call is coming you know answer the call if you press twice you can skip a track if you press three

time

s it can go back on a track and then if you press and hold a switch between active noise cancellation and transparency mode okay so it just switches between the two wait so I actually don't have any music playing right now can you do that in transparency mode I think something interesting cuz I'll bet that's gonna make it sound weird just rinse to that button he's changing it to cancellation I think right now oh man I can't I don't know what you're saying really get in say and then you can hear me now it's not yeah whoa okay he said I see the use for this...
oh yeah well I know it doesn't sound exactly natural but it's it's audible and like this music is like it's cranked up pretty good and I could totally see in a situation where you were listening to something and you didn't want to quit but you needed to talk to somebody weird cool podcast or whatever absolutely okay okay I also listened to a lot of podcasts and

audio

books but I just haven't had a lot of

time

s right but I have a lot of books right yeah yeah yeah what is happening to all the books I'm

trying

to read right now he doesn't know what's going on right now and also a pretty busy guy yes you are very busy I haven't had a lot of

time

to read books but there's this great app called blankets that you should totally check out sponsor so blankets is this really great app that's on iOS Android it's even on the web there are over eight million users using blankets right now what it's doing is it's taking thousands and thousands of different books and it's condensing down the best parts of it down to 15 minute little snapshots or you can even listen to it in 15 minutes I actually have been listening to it on the way to work and I get through a book every single

time

we go to work yeah like you came through a whole business book yeah yes yeah exactly we have a bunch of different genres that you can look at like business entrepreneurship health self-help so there's a lot of options there you could directly...
listen to two different books each day one on the way to work and one on the way back to whole books yeah so some of my books and preferences are persuasive copywriting so if you like social media things like that there's the Edward Snowden

audio

book for a permanent record there's even millennial money hmm yeah yeah we're

trying

to figure out how to handle our money on the

first

100 people that sign up using the link down below in the description you get seven whole days for an unlimited access to blankets for free and you can cancel any

time

within that if you need to but even better you can get 25% off and unlimited like full subscription the premium subscription I like finding deals you know oh yeah the deals okay so they had this really great deal if you pay annually that it ends up being eight dollars and thirty four cents per month that ends up being six dollars and 26 cents which you know if you're buying a book every single month that's actually a really good deal yeah books are cheap go ahead and look at some of the books and if you sign up let me know what books you're reading or listening to you in the comments below so we're talking a little bit about the fit that your tips and everything okay those are proprietary actually really yes if you took

them

off if you happen to lose

them

it costs four dollars to replace to get a new one it's like highway robbery for sure because these things are not expensive to make but for

Apple

...
that's actually pretty cheap four dollars is not the end of the world you know there are gonna be some knockoff Chinese companies making it at that price $4 he - I'll just get the real things it's kind of in that line where they're robbed and you but he may as well so there's this other thing where you can do the ear tip fit test all right so we'll put both of

them

in and what's gonna find out is whether or not these ear tips are the right fit for my ear canals these tight good good job oh wow it's so good seal it so I mean the reason why that's so important is because if you don't have the right ear tips then it won't actually cancel the the sound as well most ear buds they have a little canal thing that goes into your ear a little bit but that channel or canal is actually built into the ear tips itself it makes it feel more comfortable did like how comfortable was it I barely could feel

them

I was a little surprised and just fall out the other going nowhere we gotta compare it to the original comes up oh that's deeper yeah this quick click quality is I can hear it that sounds more plasticy yeah I'm pouring things over to see that you definitely oh I've seen these wheels before but they have wires all right you should put on a shake test row of this this old ones I just for kicks yeah yeah they're not as stable they're not gonna come out like I'd have to like do some stuff yeah assuring yeah it's...
definitely not as like oh these are there they're not moving anywhere okay those other ones kind of feel more like part of my face so you know that you can wirelessly charge these things you put it on this this is also a samsung wireless charger how many of you were dying inside caleb is about to use these Sony headphones these are the MDR 75006 this is actually kind of like an industry standard for a lot of

audio

engineers

they have a pretty flat frequency response which isn't the most fun way to listen to music but it's a good reference point to find out what other things are doing if I'm mixing something I don't want my headphones to make the music sound great I want my mix to sound great so something that's really flat it's great to work on and then the thing that's awesome is that if they sound great on these and when you're listening to something that's flattering to the sound like these you know it kind of just amplifies that and does some weird things too this is a great sounding track I can actually hear the drums there's a lot of percussion in Hana song it's got tons of bass oh yeah it's like the mids are really smooth it's so talented she's really good oh that's a low note yeah that one's really good yeah for being earbuds these actually sound like pretty pretty great I have no idea what you're saying right now he's talking really loud because he has the anc turn I just want to hear it...
unnatural for a second okay so this definitely sounds better the natural version there's something weird that's happening in the low end when the ANC is on it's almost like thinning it out they're taking out some Malloy some stuff out of the music a little bit you know but for general listening these actually these sound okay there are a lot more full than I expected in

them

to be one thing that drives me nuts about like consumer headphones is that a lot of

them

have over-the-top bass like it drives me crazy it's like why would you want that much but others I don't know what it's for low-end is really hard to have a sound like controlled and focused and intentional so when it's like really cheap and they're just throwing tons of Loen in there it just sounds like a fluffy mess right right absolutely one thing that's interesting about these guys is that they're a little bit flattering so some of the mids are taken out and there's some high-end stuff that isn't quite as this this track doesn't have a ton of like top top in it like super high-end stuff like it's a very warm track which is what you would want for like film scoring or something like that right because you don't want to like take away from the dialogue or anything but there's some things that it's just not totally telling me but on the whole like I would totally if I was just listening to music for fun or something they does I don't see a...
problem like they actually sound like better than I was expecting

them

to oh yeah how do you engineer take how about that yeah there's a lot of like criticism over these when they initially came out right good but they look just like the other ear buds like the stem is a little bit longer in this way lower profile so now we can find out how the original ear pods with the wireless charging case how that sounds I can definitely hear you talk oh yeah I hear that like they're not the best for sound quality but you like it forget the convenience right cuz it just works it's connecting and it's connecting well oh yeah these aren't nearly as good still passable like if I was cleaning my house I totally listen on these if I was vacuuming I would absolutely listen at least oh he's way better yeah there it's not as like present you have to turn it up a little more which makes sense because the speakers are farther away from your ears like when it's not projecting it and there's a seal on your ears it's gonna get a lot closer okay so these don't sound nearly as like direct they're a little more washy sounding if I mix on headphones which is rare I almost always mix on either semi-open back or open-back headphones the closed back stuff does weird things to the way that you hear stuff this is a lot more like an open back headphone there's also some weirdness going on in the high mids that's really bothering me I can also hear the...
music from here Oh interesting yeah with the air pods Pro because it's creating a seal it's actually making it hard for me to hear their music yeah these aren't nearly as fun like if I just kind of pick one for sound quality it definitely be version to tell me a bit about the the color do you like the white color it doesn't bother me I'm kind of used to

Apple

stuff I mean if it was in black I'd probably like it more gray or something if you've noticed I have a skin on my phone well are me one the friends over at deep breath they sent me a neck bro with the army green skin on it oh lens pro gosh can I mash it out and check it out let's see now how a scratch up these things get you can get a different color other than white and you can even match it with a skin on your phone and a case if you want to get your skins you know there's a link down below in the description thanks to you Bren for hooking me up with this thing there and we're in the channel his is a little more poor than mine this case is a little bit smaller the old one and the new one's a little bit bigger I wish I wasn't as impressed as I am like I don't like liking this kind of stuff but they actually sound pretty good yeah I think two

audio

engineers

approve this ah I'd say they're pretty good well we haven't talked about the price yet because this is

Apple

its $249 for air pods per Oh yikes so the Sony ones are 25 dollars more but you know...
they're a little bit bigger they have a comfier feel I'm double noise-canceling everything but yeah okay so like yeah $249 for this crazy thing and then a skin if you want to get that and then this one is a hundred and ninety-nine dollars for the normal ones if you get the wireless charging kids whoa a lot of money okay for this yeah fifty dollars and you get way way better headphones I actually I'm confused about that pricing structure are you mostly paying for the charging case it's kind of like when you go to McDonald's right you know anything you like this right and you want large fries oh but wait a minute do you want the extra large fries just like 15 cents one it's the difference it's so close that you might as well just get the earpods / absolutely like quality wise it's kind of a no-brainer yeah if you are willing to spend $200 in earpods you might as well just spend that 250 dollars but the question does come down do you want to spend that much money for anything to begin with like this and that's a decision that you'll have to make and if you're going for

audio

quality alone like I think the earpods totally work and there's some things that they don't do but this is a hundred dollar pair of headphones and they sound great the reason why a lot of people really love their air pots is because it's small it's convenient and it just works thank you so much for joining me once again if you have not checked out...
William Caleb Parker's stuff he mixes a lot of really great bands there's links down below in the description so thanks so much for joining me yeah no problem but thank you so much watching this is tech day where we talk about the intersection of Technology and our everyday lives in business and all things creative until next

time

hey friends Brandon here and I am so excited right isn't know what it is it's like neck tinglies on the back your neck a little bit alright any

time

you want to do this this is really fun yeah
