Andy Murray Press Conference | 2023 US Open Round 2

Sep 01, 2023
A lot of times, Andy, can you describe from your point of view what didn't feel right on the court today? Well, I felt like there were two things: one that I created. Opportunity guys on the return and I didn't break serve enough and I didn't. I didn't serve well, obviously I started every set. I think they broke me at the beginning of every set, so I was never able to get

ure on the scoreboard, really, and then, yeah, the times I went back to the set or fell back. um yeah, I just didn't play well enough, I didn't serve well enough and like I said, when I created the opportunities and the return games, I felt like there was, I don't know, a lot of like love. 30s 1540s break points and um yeah I just couldn't I couldn't get any momentum Simon Simon Briggs Telegraph I mean the stats would say you didn't get as many winners as you normally do, it's either their defense or you I think you just weren't finding that final shot to finish off a rally, yeah, I mean, he obviously moves very well and then the way he plays in terms of um, he's obviously very soft back and it's not always easy. to finish the points, you know, with that shot, but obviously the goal when someone cuts is to put them under

ure, you know, you can find areas of the court to force more errors instead of hitting winners with those balls, so that is probably one reason for this and then yes, the second is that if you don't serve as well, you don't have as many opportunities on the third ball of the rally to know how to hit winners and finish points or hit and reach the net, which is what you know for me, it's usually when I would tend to advance earlier in the points, you know, behind my serve and yeah, I wasn't, I wasn't getting a lot of free points there, um, yeah, South wasn't, I wasn't.

Big enough and not big enough on the court Mike um Mike Dixon the man um and obviously he's pretty amazing in some ways that you're playing right now and I'm wondering if you've had so many great moments. on that court that makes a game like today even more painful um yeah, I mean, it's obviously disappointing um yeah, no, yeah, not playing like you'd like, um, you know, but maybe you know I need to need it . Accept that you know those events like the deep runs and everything that I felt I was capable of doing, they may not be there either, so you know I'm aware of what I'm doing, it's incredibly challenging to play at the highest level I I know, but um, and yeah, some days it's harder than others, but yeah, today is obviously a really disappointing loss, uh, and probably the way it went like that, like you know, I mean, I fought hard enough, but yeah, I just didn't do it. like I said I didn't play well enough and ultimately you know these are the events where you want to play your best tennis and you know create more big moments and I didn't do that this year yeah Neil mem.

From Mir, you're at Wimbledon, you're obviously frustrated and disappointed with the way your ex came out of there because you're playing so well. Does this by far feel worse today? um no, not really um, I think when you don't play Well, yeah, so yeah, I mean, it's obviously frustrating, but it's not like that. You know it can happen and you know what the highest level is. If you don't play at a high enough level, you know it's very difficult to win. whereas at Wimbledon, obviously, when you know how to play at a good level and you know that you potentially had a good draw there and everything, um, you know, that's, um, yeah, that's harder to accept, um, you know, obviously, which, like at Wimbledon, I almost had it.

Queens didn't go well, but they had a great buildup in terms of all the games and everything that happened here was slightly different um and yeah, it didn't work out, it didn't work out well. A couple more questions Stuart Miller of The New York Times Um, you mentioned that you know you might need to accept that the deepest runs may not be there, but obviously you had some good deep runs in smaller tournaments this year, what do you think? Does it keep you motivated both in smaller tournaments and in these? tournaments where you know it could be more complicated, you know, obviously you've already achieved a lot in your career, so what keeps you working?

Well, yeah, I mean, obviously, you know, I've been making progress this year from a ranking perspective, um. You know, I had some great matches in Australia. Well, quite a few amazing matches at the beginning of the year, actually in Doha too. Yes, I think it was near you. You know, you never know what's going to happen, but I think I was. close to having a good run at Wimbledon um and yeah, I still enjoy everything that comes with playing at a high level. I enjoy it, you know the work and you know the training, the trying to improve and the trying to achieve it. better, I still enjoy it, yes, and that's what keeps me going if things change and I stop enjoying that or my results, my ranking and everything, if I start to go backwards in that sense, you know, in a few. months I was, you know, 60th in the world or whatever, instead of moving forward, moving up, the way things could change, okay, the last two Simon and Simon campuses CL Andy, which ones Are your plans for the next few months?
Two, well, I was going to play a lot in Asia um actually I didn't get into the Beijing tournament um it was ridiculously strong I think the cutoff was like 23 or something like that um which I'd never seen before um so I didn't get into Beijing um like that yeah I don't know, I don't know, obviously the plan was to play with the Davis cut, but if I'm honest, I mean you know the other guys deserve to play before me, and yeah, I know it's obviously probably going to be tough. um situation like obviously for Leon with Jack um he had quite a few injuries but you know if he's fit and healthy he's obviously playing very well um you know Cam and Eville you know EV has had a great career in Washington so um Yeah, we'll see about the Davis Cup and what happens there, but um, yeah, I think there's probably a chance that he won't be in the team, um and then yeah, I'll see, I'll see where I go, I'll go from there, I'll try. and I will try. and get home this afternoon or tomorrow morning and, yes, the last question creates this kind of stress again, like how valuable it could be if you got those few extra spots that would put you in the top 32 and save you from playing a seed, so, yeah, I'm serious, it could work, but I also want to say that I'm going to be in a tough match, you know, if it is, it's more about how well you play, like you know, if I want to have deep careers in these terms.
I'm going to have to face players like Gor or C Pass or, you know, who in Australia played Bartini in the first round and you know Bautista in the third round, you know these are obviously the best players, obviously being Sitting avoids them early, but yeah, for me it's more about the level you put and the performance and, whether or not I was sitting here in the top 32, then I don't think that guarantees that I'm going to have a deep race either, but you can see that in the bottom half of the draw there are chances with a lot of the top guys, you know not having deep Bruns the draws might

open

up a little bit but yeah it wouldn't necessarily matter if you don't play at a good enough level.
