"American Sniper" Chris Kyle Interview - CONAN on TBSFeb 27, 2020
the book is a huge success and fascinating uh uh it talks about uh your time as a member of seal team three yes sir ok and this is tell us the difference between for example the team of seals three and the seal team six, we've all heard of seals. team six or the ones that killed uh uh bin laden and they uh and they uh yeah i forget who they killed a guy they just carried out another operation just a few days ago so what's the difference between team seal three and steel team six? Well, you originally Still had team one, team two, and then they formed this special unit that was called Seal Team Six. to go from one of the other seal teams, yes, to six, you basically have to go through another training camp, try and go there.
You would be right because it's great to walk now. I mean first of all you have an amazing story so you shouldn't know you have nothing to be ashamed of but it might be fun to walk into a bar now and go surf team six huh I do this a lot I just tell you I tell people I was in that raid and no one believes it but then I give details they just aren't you know we got them in baltimore I'm blown away by uh by some of the things you've accomplished you're an amazing
sniperand you're the longest aiming target you hit in combat i was thinking about this today at 2100 yards away which is 21 football fields away yessir that I can't even fathom taking a shot from that distance.
I can not. It was an accident. It was an accident. You dropped your rifle. where you are in the battle and the technology behind it first of all the weapons themselves are amazing but there is a lot of calculating wind there are real computers involved oh I mean our optics and everything is so much more advanced than the boys. even in vietnam right, you have carlos halfcock who i think is the best
sniperever, i have more kills but that doesn't mean i'm better than him. yeah and i definitely cheated i use a ballistic ballistic computer it tells me everything i have to do so i'm just a monkey with a gun ok i wouldn't go that far but i have a question because this kind of thing they fascinate me when when you are in your sniper position how long can you be in your position before you start to get paranoid that they will zero in on where you are shooting from and chase you good if you are inside the city then?
It depends if you take occupied or unoccupied if you take occupied then you have to take the family feed them make them go to the bathroom all these other things let them do everything I just can't let them out at nine o'clock in the morning they know you're there if it's unoccupied so when you take your first shot they know where you are and then you keep going you can't move you're in the middle of town that's why when i go i don't go in alone i take my team with me and once i shoot it's now a defensive position ok You were so well known to the Iraqi insurgents you were fighting that they put up a twenty thousand dollar bounty. your head is like this yes sir ok uh you don't have to call me sir by the way im a talk show host you are here and i am here clear that up um but uh but twenty thousand dollar bounty on your head how did you identify the Iraqi insurgents who were you when I would walk into a house and we had the houses occupied, I would take off my uniform top and just put on my short-sleeved shirt and you could see my tattoo going down my arm and they identified it as me and they started every time a sniper was shooting someone in the area they associated him with me so they came after you and started saying someone please get this guy and you out.
I'll make twenty thousand dollars, well, the twenty thousand was definitely putting the partnership on me, but all the snipers had a twenty thousand dollar bounty on his head, okay, and then it finally went up to about eighty thousand and then I was worried about coming. home because I thought my wife would give me up. I met her backstage. She doesn't look very tight.
