A Look at Ubuntu MATE 19.10 Beta

May 03, 2020
Newcomers to Linux are often confused by the fact that there are strange pronunciations of words that obviously seem to spell something else. In this video, I'm going to reference the

mate

i desktop over and over again and it

look

s like it's spelled ma te

mate

. Why do I pronounce it that way because it's actually named after a South American plant that is made into a drinkable beverage called yerba mate or Matta or something like that that I can't pronounce with the correct colloquialisms? MIT calls him Matei, that's why I call him Matei. This is also part of the suite of boom to releases with all the different flavors, including the main version of boom to running gnome GN om e in the US, Canada and the UK, and many other English languages. -parts of the world where this is spoken it is pronounced gnome, lately the developers of that desktop would like you to pronounce it as gun property and the 1910 version is affectionately known as EO n Herman, it gets weirder and stranger as that we move forward by simply offering put this information right at the beginning of the video so we can handle some of those comments yes it's weird I know no I don't care what you call it you can call your desktop George P Schmidt lap whenever you use it and We are enjoying it greetings and greetings and welcome to this video in which we are going to see an advantage of Matei 1910.

This is the

beta

version that came out a couple of days ago. I was very surprised to receive an email. straight from Martin, groans a boom's lead developer, Tumut, giving me a heads up on this. I've been waiting for this because I know there are a lot of big changes and a lot of big bug fixes. He is very happy with the condition. Of this, with the

beta

version it went ahead and released the good notes, which is a bit unusual. Don't expect any major changes between now and the final release date of October 17. I'm not going to go over these notes.

More Interesting Facts About,

a look at ubuntu mate 19 10 beta...

There's a lot to talk about, but a lot has changed, which is a blessing for this video. It is an introductory

look

. I'm probably going to leave something out. I can even be wrong about some things. This is a beta version and one thing that is pointed out is that those who download and install the beta version on their own system do so at their own risk simply due to the fact that it is a beta version, things are going to change, they could become destabilized , they might break something, well this time I decided it was I'll be a bit living on the edge and actually installed the beta.

I'm making this video of this beta version. I have been preparing for a blessing for Matei more and more over the past few months. I've helped set up a lot of people use it, my brother is running it, my mom is now running it on her machine and a lot of people I'm working with are using it and I'm using a blessing for 18:04 on one of my machines on Right now they have the Mattei desktop and it has just proven to be very stable and this version is also proving to be stable, although I have only run it for about 2 or 3 days, it has been very enjoyable to play.

So this is my desktop, since I have it set up and this is what I usually do with Matéo. Use what is known as a Redmond layout. We'll talk more about that in just a minute. I just wanted to show you what it's like. looks and this is what the menu looks like, this is the old mint menu from two days ago in gnome, but it continues under mattei matei is a desktop that happened because gnome moved from gnome to gnome 3, this is known to continue and those Of you who started on Linux many years ago, we'll remember how it looked and acted like it was very similar, very similar, so what I originally did was install this on a virtual machine that I'm running just fine. here and this is what it looks like when you first install it, so let's go ahead and see in full screen what I can now do because in previous versions of VirtualBox, like when I was using a blessing for 1804, the long support version deadline and I would do it. install VirtualBox either from the repositories, which were like five two or five three or something like that that you got if I went into series six, I had numerous errors, one of which was that it refused to work when in full screen, it just didn't work.
I was able to type but it works perfectly fine so this is what it looks like when you first get it and this is a layout that they call familiar and it looks a little bit like the old gnome dos desktop and you see here that I have what is called the snappy menu which is from the Solace Linux distribution that Ikey Dirt put out a few years ago and wrote this menu from scratch and Martin incorporated it into two of them for mattei and by the way, this is getting. one update now and this is what the desktop looks like, but one of the beautiful things about working with Ubuntu Matei is that if you don't like what you see, you can change it.
There are a lot of desktop layouts, I mean a lot, so if you go into this control center app right here and we're going to have to look for it, we're looking for the snapping tool, actually what I need to do before I do something like that, let's do these fonts here a little bit bigger so they're easier for everyone to see and there's the adjustment tool right under the appearance, so let's go ahead and I'm going to get those going. It's one of the good things I like about this desk and it's been that way for many, many years. is that you have very, very tight control over it, so you can turn it off and make it bigger.
You have very tight control over the way it looks and if you don't like something you can change it, no problem. let's make this really big let's make it yeah that way it's a lot easier for people to view it on lower resolution devices so now let's take a quick look at how the desktop works here and we have this beautiful tool here called meta tweak and we can decide what icons we want on the desktop so we can add a trash can if we want or remove it. We have a fully active desktop, the gnome developers removed that in gnome 3 and now you have to install an extension to get something that acts like a active desktop, but is not.
This is one of the reasons I've been gearing up to use this desktop is the fact that later versions of the gnome desktop and I have been using gnome on my main machines since the boom. a 1804 was in beta and they switched to the gnome desktop a while ago. I've been using it and I really like it, but the later versions are getting a little more cumbersome because gnome keeps removing features, so if we want to change our desktop look here we can go in and then let's see how to convert that in Redmond and it warns you that yes , you are going to lose your things, do you really want to do this?
Then I clicked OK and he will rebuild the desktop and come up with a completely new layout, it's not that good and it takes a little bit of time to put together, let's look at it a little more here we have what he calls this traditional, I think this is the one It looks and acts very similar to the old desktop or gnome - desktop from years ago before it became matei and yes these are the menus we used to have so those of you who remember playing with a boom - when it first appeared. came out, that's what it looked like and then those of you who fondly remember the Unity desktop that had a boom, ran for several years, have Mutiny and the Mutiny desktop looks a lot like what Unity was, it looks and acts very similar. so give it a second to complete, there you go, that's the mutiny desk and you can open your menu there and you'll get something that looks like the old one: is he cool or what man?
It's pretty amazing that they have that, but what? It happened to me, haven't you heard about my programs? Did I close them? I don't know, so let's go back to the old days, you used to be able to just click here and start typing, so let's go ahead, yeah, let's open. that back then here we go back to where we were on a panel and this is all just moving faster may be this is running in a virtual machine it's just amazing let's go back to Redmond and you guys can explore the desktops that you have There's a ton of different things to choose from and once you set yours up the way you like it, move all the icons around and everything, let's see here we go.
I guess you have to close the apps to get back. I do not know what it is. it's happening there, but it doesn't matter anyway, oh, I see we have them both open, so it minimized everything when it moved there, okay. I see how that works. I don't usually waste time on this, what I usually do is just jump in here and do what I have to do and get out, but anyway, once you find one that you like, you can add things here and you can move them around with a little of effort and you can add something to the panel normally what I add is a workspace switch let's go ahead and grab one of those so you can see how it works and there's the workspace switch and I click Add which pretty much It will appear where I want it if you want to move it. something, right click on it and go to move and then move it into place and then right click again, lock it on the panel, there it is and you may come across a situation where we are trying to move something and it gets stuck, that it's because what's next to it is locked, so if you want to rearrange these little icons here in the bottom right corner, if you want, you have to unlock everything, including what shows the programs correctly, because it's going to get stuck on one side of that and then it won't work, it's hard to explain.
I won't show it now because it would take too long, but you'll figure it out fine anyway once you get it the way you want. You can save your design and then if you ever change it, you can always go back to it, so I just changed it. I saved one there and called it Joe and it's saved in the configuration file somewhere along with your home directory, so if you reinstall it for some reason, as long as you keep an intact copy of your home directory, you can reinstall it. put it as it was so that's great, like I said VirtualBox works great on this, this has been a problem for me for a while.
We've had all kinds of problems for a long time. I don't see any of them here. I got a message when I started a virtual machine for the first time after switching to this version that said I needed to change the display manager inside through the VM itself and I just made a different decision and once I did it it worked perfectly fine and installed the latest guest additions, I am very happy because this has been a problem for a long time and I like to keep VirtualBox simply because I am always trying and trying new things, if VirtualBox itself has problems then we have problems and yes I have tried all the other options that exist.
I like VirtualBox, it's the one I like to use, so there you have it, it's a real Take a quick look, we can go back to the desktop we were on here and as far as installation goes, it's very similar to any other launch, except now when you choose to install third-party items, it installs their video drivers. Also, if you were one of those people who has to install nvidia drivers like I do well, guess how it works now? I'm running a virtual machine and capturing video, that's why you're seeing high CPU. happening with the h top program even though I'm running that virtual machine I'm still only using about three and a half gigabytes of memory when it first starts up where walking around maybe I don't know less than 500 megabytes it's between 300 and 500 depending and it seems to be pretty stable there 3 or 400 that's it it's all that's used just for the desktop itself so the memory footprint is very small for a GT k3 desktop one of the things that has changed in this version is that we no longer have to a we no longer have composer installed automatically, we're using just Marco, so let's go ahead and I'll show you where you change, this is something, this is a choice that you would have made here before. had more options now is to stick with Marco, that's fine with me, while he gives you the ability to do some interesting things and have wobbly windows and stuff like that, he's a little shaky and always has been.
Marco is much more stable and uses much less memory, which is why they used it now. What they said was that this version of Marco eliminated screen tearing which has been a problem for a long time, one of the reasons why the build was included with the boomtube mateus because with these types of desktops without native composers , like the ones with large desktops like gnome and canela that have them built in, you may have screen tearing issues with your video card, that's when half the screen seems to lag, it's very annoying on certain videos you can go to YouTube and type "screen tear".
They have screen tear test videos with bars moving from left to right and you can see that happening. Unfortunately for me I still had the screen tearing issue so what I had to do was add this. command to my startup and I did it in the startup applications. I'm going to show you that in just a second there is also a problem that has arisen since the boom to 1904 where I get pops and clicks in my audio all the time and I wastrying to figure out why it was like that and I found the answer and that is that they now have this set to save power to turn the audio card on and off on some systems and that seems to work, the only problem is that it keeps turning on and off, appears and clicks then what happens is you click on a video and before you hear the video you would hear a pop and the video would play and then the video would end in about five seconds and then you would hear a click and that was turning that on and off card so I found this command right here to get rid of it now, unfortunately I can't post this in the YouTube comments because this either contains brackets or is the description and not the comments.
I can't post it in the comments. YouTube doesn't allow you to post brackets, so if this is something you need, I suggest you go to Google and do it. go and look for the NVIDIA card composer settings and if you do they will take you to this and then you can put it in your machines startup applications and as far as sound goes I'm not sure how. A lot of people will be affected by the fact that the machine I'm running is relatively old and I suppose if you did it as a laptop it wouldn't be a big deal, but it turns out it's on a machine.
You have some nice speakers hooked up and I have some nice big speakers hooked up to this machine, so you can imagine when something starts up, it pops, it sounds like a gun going off, it's very unpleasant, so that had to be fixed. I did, there are other issues here with this menu that I hope get fixed and if no one reports this anytime soon I will report it to make sure the order of any of these can't be changed. Usually with this advanced menu here you can change things and move things around, but it doesn't work, it doesn't really let you do that, so that will have to be fixed at some point.
It's an old bug that has resurfaced and it could just be because it's in super beta so we'll see what happens with that and this is a brand new beta. I'm sure that will be fixed and even if it isn't, there is a workaround and you can do what I did, which is just delete everything from this favorites menu and then add them in the order you want them to appear, so If you want the first thing to be your web browser or less, like I do here, then you would put it there and then in your mail, this brings me to my next point.
They've dropped Thunderbird as the default email in a blessing at 19:10, so they're now shipping with Evolution. Personally, I'm NOT happy with it because I can. I can't stand evolution, this is software I don't want to use. I am very interested in Thunderbird. Nowadays, many people don't even use webmail. They use or rather use an email client. They use webmail. I understand. that, but I have several accounts to follow and I think a lot of people do it for work and home and all that, it's nice to have an email client that does that without having to open a browser, you're not doing it on some web page . somewhere and I've been using Mozilla Thunderbird to do that for over 10 years, that's how long I've been using it, I had to stop and think about it so I'm not going to change that anytime soon and I just can't, I can't get along with evolution, it might work well for you, luckily it's very easy to change.
All you have to do is simply delete the evolution sudo apt delete the evolution before opening it. This way you don't get any configuration files on the system and then you just have to install Thunderbird and click there so a couple more things to show you here in the setting let's see here oh and well I didn't mean to open. which now did a search, that's another thing that this will do, which is actually cool, but that's why I did it because I wrote it wrong, I guess here we have, when we go to the panel, we have all kinds of little things that you can add these little features, they're wonderful, you have keyboard LED indicators that you can turn on, you can have what's known as a HUD, which would go along with the Mutiny desktop, which is an old Unity feature, and then we have, you can turn on a base.
So you could put a dock here if you wanted and you can put a drop down terminal that actually has the tilde, which is a cool little program and that activates it, then you press F12 and your terminal just pops up, so what else was going on? to do? To show you, there were a couple more things I wanted to mention here, let's dive into the nuts and bolts of the system because it's actually been updated and changed, we can go ahead and close it. Now let's go ahead and close this as well, let's go ahead and put this here.
I want to close it, thank you and we'll get out of here, so let's go ahead and full screen our terminal and then we can use control, use control and I use the shift key and then. The advantage of making it bigger so everyone can see it I got tired of that blue background so I'm going to be doing this for a while, I might turn off the transparency if I make more videos with this particular setting I've been working on. in a series of videos and we may or may not continue where we are doing things in a terminal, so if we continue, it might look different, it might look something like this because I like this right now working with the Mate terminal is working very well , so let's talk about some of the changes in the system and that is that when we list the things that are in the root directory, everything looks pretty normal.
You can see that I have installed it. time change on this system, so I have it running and we have all the regular directories that you are used to seeing in a boom; However, what they've done now and I'm not really sure how I feel about this, we do a Long List here, you'll see something different and that is I'll have to do a long list of the route. Thanks, that's my home directory. You'll see here that many of these are now no longer directories. they're like the bin directory right here wasn't really, it's a link, so when you run a script that starts with a shebang, you know we're pretty used to seeing it start with the hashtag pound sign and exclamation point. point slash bin slash bash is actually just pointing to this link now and going to USR slash bin, which is where it now looks like we're putting all the libraries and all the executables that we can download here.
See there's s bin which is usually where system binaries are kept and that goes into the USR bar so this is something new, this is something Debian was talking about ten years ago so I guess that's why which has fallen and boomed, and they did it and now this is how it's done, does that mean you have to go back and rewrite all your scripts now, so we just have to have shebangs slash USR slash bin, as long as this link is here, will it be fine? okay, but it is what it is and it's something that those of us who actually dig into the system need to be aware of and there have also been several other changes to the system coming in here which is a big help to that.
Frankly, I'm not entirely aware. I heard some things have changed, so there it is. Let's put it that way. I'm not going to continue talking because I'm probably going to say something that I'm obviously going to say. wrong, I think that's all I wanted to show you, apart from those small problems that we discussed, everything has been very fluid, very agile, very fast, very good. Basically I haven't had any problems, they did and they did. wonderful job with the theming on this, that's what I wanted to show you, look at this, this is the QT integration here for the desktop, this is a QT application running here and let's open a file manager, which is kaha, get them right. side by side the kaha file manager is on GT k3 and this is QT 5 and they look quite similar so they've done a great job especially when you have the lovely ambient theme which is the one I've used for years and Years and years and I'm so used to my mom prefers a theme here called Bloom Inta and they've done a great job.
Another thing I want to mention before I end this and they just tell me no. What I didn't say a word about it is the fact that a boon for Matei comes with two apps that are exclusive to this particular Linux distribution and I usually just don't install them because I don't use them personally, but what do they do, What do they do. This is, let's go over here to the empty desktops, let's get out of there where I have this terminal open and then we'll just open them up, so the first one I want to show you is let's see here.
I think this will lead me to it. I know it will open Synaptic because I installed the Synaptic package manager. That's fine, so let's see, let me see, let me find the software boutique here, this is the software boutique and what it is is an application that lists the software that is very useful for Linux users, this is not all that's on the system, these are things that you're going to need to do things that are popular and you can see we have these lists here and we can install these applications, some of these applications are not available.
Ubuntu repositories have other ways to install them, so let's search the Internet here. We can get a Flash Player here if we need it. You can install Chrome. You can stop Firefox. You can install Google Chrome. This is good for new users who are not very modern with the process because normally what you have to do with Google Chrome is open Firefox and then download the Deb package and install it. I have a shortcut for that. I actually wrote a script that installs Google Chrome, goes and downloads and installs. I've shown it in previous videos, but people who are new to Linux might be saying, "Hey, I'm a Google Chrome user.
I need to get a copy." right here it's available and you just click on it to have all these wonderful applications that are just one click away from installing your Skype, if you still have to use it, there you go, very good, and if it's Thunderbird, which I had to install and I like it . I said I can do all this from a terminal, but I've been around a block several times. It's nice to have an app that makes it really easy for people who are new to Linux to do this kind of thing and then the other thing we have to talk about quickly is the welcome screen, which appears as soon as you install it , so let's go ahead and look at that, let's see, actually, here we go, no, no, that's the right approach, welcome and This is also great for new users because we go here to start and we have all these options so we can optimize these optimization tools, we can install drivers here, we can do updates to the system, just a bunch of things that are added. here we also have a shortcut to the software boutique, so it will actually become the software boutique and you can start installing software, so on many Linux you have to do something in a terminal to start Linux Mint and a blessing for matei.
It's all point and click, you can configure the whole system, install all the software you need and it's all point and click, it's really cool, so there you have it, that's my look around. I mean, I could go on, but the video. It's getting old and I really want you guys to see it for yourself. If you're someone who likes to play with this stuff, definitely give it a chance and if you find a bug, be sure to do so. report it as that menu and yes the way it does it in both places I installed it so I know it's a problem but it will be fixed very quickly.
I knew for sure and as for things I had to add settings for sound and video that are expected as the hardware ages and the kernel advances. They had new features. Some of those new features don't necessarily play well with older hardware. It's something you should keep in mind. If you're going to be working with Linux, thanks for watching, as always, your feedback is always welcome.
