family

has lived minimalist for about six years and today I want to share with you 50

things

we don't buy

anymore

, however, most of them are not because we live like minimalists or live very simply, we actually got rid of most of these

things

when we were on the path to being debt free, so really Our main reason for stopping buying most of these things was money, the second was the idea of inventory and not having so many things to manage and then the third was because it's better for the earth, so I shared with you some of our things for children that we no longer buy and the main motivation for not buying new things for children is that there are already many things available, so we especially do not buy any type of toys for our children, neither new toys nor used toys. because they get a lot of gifts and what I've learned about toys and kids is that marketing tells us that kids need these new flashy toys to make them happy and keep them busy, but science tells us that kids just need to play and they use their imagination and in fact the fewer toys they have the more creative they will be the longer they will play and the better they will play with others so I will link some articles about that below but all of these decisions I didn't just say oh yeah.

I'm a minimalist, I'm not going to buy this stuff, a lot of thought went into it, it's very similar to children's toys, we don't buy new children's clothes because there are a lot of used clothes out there, but there are also new clothes.

family

members' things for Christmas to keep their wardrobes looking current. I never felt like our kids looked, I don't know, chubby, like they still had nice clothes, but I save so much money that we also don't buy like these printed sheets when they're gender specific or for a certain age range because they're just not versatile enough. , TRUE?

57 things we don t buy anymore family minimalism...

I want things that will stand the test of time and that anyone in our house can use this kind of time out and so if they are given to us as a gift, of course we keep it, but I don't buy them, I buy them and , along the same lines, are baby items. Whenever we need something for our babies, I like to ask my friends and family first and then I want to say, can we Facebook Marketplace make it easier to get baby things. I once read that there are 11 times more baby items on our planet than there are babies, so we have too much and I think it's amazing if we can use what we have first.

We keep buying new things, we also don't buy birthday gifts for our children, so their birthday party is their gift and we also have a tradition where they can make their own cake and decorate it themselves and they love it, they will talk about it. throughout the year how they are going to decorate their cake and all the different ideas that they have so it's been a fun tradition and they still get gifts from other family members so they still get gifts so before we get into the kitchen and the bathroom a couple more things that I don't buy here I don't buy much for seasonal decoration

anymore

.

I grabbed this pumpkin from the target place for three bucks, but other than that, I'm just trying to make do with what we have. We don't have a lot of spaces to decorate anymore and that has made a big difference, but this was another thing we eliminated when we were trying to save money. I also don't buy storage furniture and that's probably not the case. It doesn't surprise you, but if anything I try to get rid of storage furniture because it tends to accumulate things and again this goes back to that idea of inventory and how many things we want to manage so that me, our house works better and I can stay.
Plus, it's better when we don't have a lot of stuff and we no longer buy those plug-in air fresheners or even scented candles, so again marketing tells us what makes our house smell so good that science tells us those chemicals it contains. And those artificial scents really aren't good for our bodies and I still like to light a scented candle from time to time, but I usually get enough for gifts so I don't have to buy them myself, so let's go to the kitchen. So this is one of the few places I decorate and our house definitely feels more spacious now that we don't have as much decor or that extra furniture, also when it comes to food and cooking, even in times of uncertainty.
At times like this, I don't like to stock up on a lot of food because it's more to manage and we waste it when we have too much food it just goes to waste so we don't want to be stupid we keep uh We have an extra freezer in the basement that has extra meat and a few extra cans, but you definitely have to do what feels most comfortable for you in that same sense. I don't like buying things in bulk or big packages again, it's just more. Things we have to manage. I think our budget is best spent when we shop each week and get only the things we need for that week and nothing else, and I know that's not for everyone, but for us it's fun how we do things. better use of our grocery budget each week, we also try to stay away from packaged snacks or anything that is individualized, of course, we also don't buy plastic water bottles for example, if we travel like when we camp, uh.
We bought some when we were unsure about water and hadn't figured out a good water filtration system yet, but when we're at home, I really like these, so I honestly never thought I'd be a drinking person. No more glass jars, but I'm so tired of these types of water bottles. These are the worst, but these lids that go on the glass jars are super cool, really easy, really easy to clean. The kids use them, we use them and I like to get them. kind of medium size jars that are the straight size, they are 24 ounce jars, they fit in cup holders and they are easy to hold if you don't have big hands, so I like this one, we also have some like this one with the linen straw and just It works like a charm.
Tom was worried because the kids liked to walk around with glass jars, but they are very durable. We haven't broken any yet. I mean, we try not to let them take them outside, but they still do it. They'll come out of the car and they don't break, so I don't know, knock on wood. So far we haven't broken any jars, but worst case scenario, I mean whenever one gets hurt, they're really cheap. To replace, I also try to stay away from foods that are on sale or special offers. I really discovered for myself that foods I don't cook with regularly just get pushed to the back of the cupboard. the freezer the back of the refrigerator and a lot of times I end up throwing them away because they're already expired and at the end of the day I don't want to cook new food no matter if it was on sale or No, I don't want to cook it and that has made a big difference for us.
Oh, I feel like I don't want this to be like I'm nagging or like this is the right way and this is the wrong way. It's not my heart behind this at all. I feel like sometimes these things seem like the things we should buy right and then we never stop to think, oh wait, should we keep doing that? And this is what works. us, so you're free to buy whatever you want, okay, and then cleaners, so I try to buy only all-purpose cleaners and I don't like them, but not many, or as you know, I don't know where you're going. the cleaning aisle and you can get all kinds of things.
This is my favorite, like grease spray. I wouldn't need it. It's just an all-purpose cleaner that I would like to spray the countertops with, but I like the smell of it. well and that makes me happy but otherwise I always have a bottle with vinegar and water and then this is my go to shower and sink cleaner anything that looks like a flaky lime build up is the vinegar and soap solution for sunrise dishes so I can link to that below so we literally cleaned our entire house with these four cleaners the bathroom the kitchen any room in the house this is what we used and now I can go down the hall of cleaning the lens with blinders on because I don't feel the need. try something new because everything works so well, so I would probably say that clothing is the area where I've made the biggest changes and really just decided that I deserve to wear clothes that I feel good in regardless of size. good shape or not, the one I'm in should always have at least a few outfits and what I found out for myself is that usually these things don't come from the clearance rack, they usually don't come from Amazon and that I don't necessarily have I have to spend a lot of money on them, but I do need to try them on and when I try it on it has to fit well, I don't need to adjust it, I don't need to make any alterations or suck. in or something like that, I donate a huge wardrobe, that's great when everything in our closet fits and we feel good and we like to wear it, we don't need a huge wardrobe and that's been a big mindset change because in the past I had tons of clothes and nothing to wear and then for any of us who live where there are different seasons where you fully experience all four seasons, you know it's very easy to accumulate warm clothes, so for me I keep a medium weight winter jacket because If it's too cold outside we don't go out but if I'm walking I need something that's not too heavy so I don't sweat too much um or and it's comfortable that when you get in the car you're not too hot or if you have to run inside and then a vest, so This is great to combine with boots.
I just try to have a pair that's versatile that I could wear to church or I could wear to run errands because, again, you could have There are a lot of different options, but I like to know what I'm wearing. If I look in the closet, I'm just grabbing a coat like there are no other options and I actually like that a lot. Okay, so the shoes. bags and accessories, so when it comes to shoes for each season, I like to have three. I have to take what I'm wearing now, one of them, so for every season I have, these are my summer, so I have my everyday clothes around something. that's elegant but neutral and then I have something that I can walk around with and then when it comes to purses and purses, I just have this leather bag.
I actually bought it at Walmart two years ago and it has held up really well and I really like it. and then i got this wallet and it matches. I didn't even plan it, but probably the biggest difference is that I just don't go shopping for a hobby or something to do, both Diana and I have a qualification like we do. I don't do that anymore and that has definitely helped a lot with impulse purchases when it comes to clothes. Okay, let's go to the laundry. We do not purchase extra bedding. I have a set for each bed.
I know sometimes the question arises: What if? you have a stomach virus, uh, you know you always want to wash it right away if that happens, so we'll put a towel or a blanket under the person, wash the sheets, and then put them back on so it's really never been a problem. I don't buy dryer sheets anymore, but I also don't like dryer balls because I hate having to search for them in the dryer, so I heard this advice that static is usually caused by over drying. our clothes, so most of the time you don't need anything, but if I'm going to dry something like wool or nylon that I know is going to have static, I'll throw them in, but chemicals and these, once you know, are You can't unlearn it right, it's really not good for us, it's not good for our clothes either, so we don't buy fabric softener either, I'll put vinegar in the rinse place and then we'll use Molly foam as detergent.
I don't try a lot of stain removers, these things work well enough so I don't feel the need to try new things or pile on more stuff, I'm just trying to put the blinders back on, so I think at the risk of sounding like a broken record. What I've really found is that I find things that work well enough and I try not to always be looking for something that works better, so this especially applies to purchasing additional hair products and makeup products. My hair is what it is, as I want to say. It would be great if there was some magic project that gave me so much volume that I would never have to do anything else to my hair, but it's just not right, so I'm not going to try it anymore and I'll keep wasting money, I hate it. waste money on hair products, but you know, the good thing about that is that when you use the same makeup and hair products, you learn to use them better over time and I feel like you get the hang of them so I'm actually really happy with all my hair and makeup products right now so I think that's been a nice added benefit of not buying more and More, it's that you discover them and they actually work quite well and then you're happy with them, so that's how it's been. they're great accessories, I really try to keep them neutral, you've probably seen me wear these earrings upside down or upside down for quite a while, even though they have something like gold or yellow in them, um, they're still pretty neutral, I feel like until they go.
With a lot of things, I have this nail polish that I use for my feet and that's it, so if it runs out, maybe I would buy another one or order one, but otherwise I don't try to have like a variety or a bunch of different shades, I don't think a lot of people pay attention to my toes and here in Minnesota sandal season is a little short anyway so I've had this for two years and it works great so I try to stay away from this one too kind of scented bath bombs and shower gels and body sprays again, just the artificially scented stuff just because I know it's not really good for us to breathe, but I like to take a bath and just put it in like it's an Epsom. . salts and a little apple cider vinegar to make like a detox bath and I don't know, it makes it feel like a fancy treatment, I guess I don't know, but maybe it's just me, we also stopped buying wedding gifts, we'll just get a gift card to wherever they're registered basically because even though we got married 12 years ago, we really appreciated gift cards and cash gifts when we first started, so we figure others appreciate the same thing we do too.
We don't buy a gym membership, which is probably self-explanatory, but in that sense we also don't buy sports clothes, sports shoes, exercise equipment, weights or anything until we've proven to ourselves that we have a track record of take our steps appropriately. something to track your steps is great, even if it's an app on your phone or an old pedometer, so Tom and I have committed that once we're consistent, we'll walk or run on our own consistently and then Let's do body weight exercises. then we would reward ourselves with sports clothes or a nice pair of sneakers or some exercise equipment.
Guess how much exercise equipment we buy? We also didn't pay for family photos and this was something we eliminated again when we tried. to get out of debt and I haven't done it again, and I think because I love photographers, we have friends who are family photographers, but we feel like it's gotten a little out of control with having a photographer in the hospital. and then newborn photos and first birthday photos and all these different things and then annual family photos and that's what you do, but we feel that because cell phones have become so good, we can capture images as long as we want. we try. doing just one formal family photo every four or five years and so far that's worked well for us, a few other things, um, so I'm also not getting any subscription boxes that I've signed up for. some, but you inevitably end up thinking there will be a couple of really good things in it and then you end up with things you don't need and don't use.
I can't think of anyone to give it to, so no subscription boxes. no meal boxes, I love the concept and the idea, but I can't understand the amount of packaging that goes into it, it seems wasteful, so I haven't been able to bring myself to do the subscription meal kits, uh, notebooks, journals, planners like me. I think we all have enough movies to last a lifetime, like who buys movies? I don't know, it's probably a no-brainer. Journals. I felt like they made me want to buy things or do different projects in our house or change things. it made me feel dissatisfied with my life or our house and then I discovered that it was actually no good, I didn't find it useful to read magazines or books, I only get them on my Kindle app.
I know people say oh, but you. holding a paper book or I can't get over it, no, I would have thought it was the same in the past and then I started using my Kindle app faithfully and I don't miss them, I don't know. so again I like not having to manage them and if books are your thing and you like to keep them, organize them, dust them off and have them, that's amazing to me, I don't mind managing them, uh, memories every time we travel. Try to take lots of pictures if the kids want to bring their own money and buy something they can make, that's totally up to them but Tom and I don't do that and we don't encourage the kids to buy souvenirs and then the Last Thing No Longer We buy are things we can't afford, yes getting out of debt is a lot of work but it's worth it and while we were on that journey there were so many things we had to do.
Say no, but it was good because it retrains your brain and makes you realize all the things you can live without, all the things you bought that didn't live up to what they said they were going to do, it's I mean, how many things. It's promoted so much as if it's going to be amazing and it's actually not that good, right, it gets pushed to the back of the cupboard or the closet, we regret buying it and that's really what drove a lot of these decisions: just trying to save. money and just eliminate any excess that comes to mind so we can get out of debt faster and through that process has made not buying these things very easy and then of course living a simplified lifestyle and giving ourselves realize that, "hey, no." I don't like managing so much stuff, that's probably been the other biggest thing that's made it really easy to not want to buy this stuff again or feel like we're missing out on something, and if you're like that right now I'd like to simplify I'd like to buy less, but right now it feels difficult.
Just continue down this path. It's simplifying your home and it really retrains your brain and makes, like everyone else, none of this feel difficult. It already feels natural, and if anything, it feels strange that other people buy all this stuff so well. If you're hoping to simplify your home even more, we'd love to help.
