It's relatively easy to do, I hope. The only downside is that it will never look as good as a real paint job and it is not as durable. But more importantly, does it look better for $2500? - I'm leaning towards a difficult maybe. - Possibly. - Probably. - We'll see. (soft music) - In addition to being cheaper, Plasti Dip has some key advantages. The application is quite simple. It's much faster than getting a new paint job or a wrap like the Hi Car. Plus, you can take it off if it looks bad. But since I wasn't even there for this, maybe Nolan can explain the Plasti Dip process better. - Before spraying, the car must be thoroughly cleaned.

It's all in the preparation, baby. - So to break it down nice and simple for you, wash the prep, mask it, and Plasti Dip. It will definitely be a process, but I think we have it under control. (spray) - Oh. (music honks in surprise) Uh-oh. - Did that just come out? - Yes. (aerosols) - Areas like this are going to be really problematic. It looks like the previous owner tried to cover it up with some things. Although Plasti Dip is a little thicker than paint, this will still show underneath. We are going with the complete package, everything so that the vinyl adheres better. One cool thing about being fake rich is that you can get other people to clean your car for you. But like my man, Puff said, "More money, more problems." If you're not detailing your car, what are you supposed to do with all the free time you have? - Quite cloudy. - Yes, we could use a little more sun. (claps) (thunder rolls) So we decided to go with a professional wrap job because everything on that car is so nice, and it drives so well now that if Zach Jobe and I tried to wrap it, it would just be a disservice. - Are you doing FaceTime? - Yes.
Hey friend. - How are you'? - So we're locking the car right now. - Wait, are they on a boat? - Wait. Oh (bleep) you. (laughing) Ah, you're an idiot. Well. - Restoration? - Well, the car needs to be detailed and we have a couple of hours to kill, so we decided to come hang out on the boat. - Well, let's hang out in this nice store. - Oh, great, yeah. Oh. (Laughs) - Sorry, the Coast Guard is coming. (laughing) We have to go. - Restoration? - It's noon and they're already drinking beers. Did you know?
Our car will look better. Let's make it look better, (bleep). (spraying air) Well, it's not a boat, but there is water. That won't do the editing. (air spray) Plasti Dip and water don't mix, so we need to make sure we get every drop of water off this car before we start, otherwise it will peel off immediately. After washing and drying the car, it is important to carefully mask any surfaces that you do not want Plasti to get wet on. Oh man, look at that shaving job. How nice. That's really nice. Meanwhile. - Hey hey. Feel how soft this is, please.
With the Hi Car nice and detailed, it was time to take it to the wrap shop. He looked great. Oh my god, that painting looks sick! But since we decided on our episode titles literally months ago, we still had to change both of our cars. So when I was in high school, swaddling wasn't cool. But now it's okay, what happened? - The adhesive has improved, the materials stretch. Everything, how it reacts to heat, all of that has improved a lot. - Yeah, you used to like to look at a car and say, "Oh, that was cool." But now I feel like if a car is a cold color, they ask me, "Is that paint?" - Look at this shine. - Look at this black guy. - I love this, oh this will look so good. - I'm really interested in this. - Meanwhile. - I have the car in the cabin.
Let's bathe this in Plasti. (running) - I feel like a Beastie Boy. So before spraying, we must mix the proper proportion. - Nobody can hear you, friend. - So our ratio will be 50%, 50%. So let's mix one up to 25 and the other up. And that will give us a 50-50 ratio. - (speaks quietly) like the guy we got this, I don't know. Two things are worth noting at this point. First, we got the wrong spray gun for this job. And two, we didn't order our Plasti Dip in time, so we had to use one a friend had in his garage.
It turned out to be 10 years old. I didn't know. What you are about to see is not Plasti Dip's fault. He's turning out pretty well, so far (laughs). We're learning this as we go, none of us really know how to do it. (machine whirring) I think that's a little better. (machine whirring) Oh. I think this is a mistake. First impressions, man, I don't know, it doesn't look like, I mean, it's liquid. Maybe it's on my part. It's probably my part. (bleep) I feel like this is a mistake. Although the first coat seemed a little rough, it usually takes a few coats before it starts to even out.
At least we did a good job masking. - We're screwed. - No, I still have faith, man. - Yes, that's just the first layer. The Vaderwerks team completely disassembled Hi Car. They wrapped all bumpers and moldings individually to ensure the best coverage possible. This ensures that Hi Car will look great from all angles. - Meanwhile. (machine whirring) - We've already worn three layers. It looks better than before. (background laughter) - Oh my God. - That? (background laughter) - Oh, Christina is laughing, that's not good. - As they say in body work, if the paint is (bleep), keep painting, baby. At first it was hot garbage. Now it's in the mile trash. We can turn it into garbage (laughs). Well guys, it's up to me.
I have to save this paint job. - After two beers, a boat ride and some cold cuts from the supermarket, it was time for the big reveal. Oh! Curse. Friend, 3507! (soft music) This looks really good. Let's go see Nolan's car. From what I've heard, it's not great. (laughing) - My God. - Your car looks very bad. (laughing) - Oh no! - Dude. It was a team effort, man. Don't worry, I won't let you burn alone. - Team effort, brother. - Thank you. I'm out of my mind. This is the worst thing I've ever done in my life. - This car couldn't look worse. (paper peeling away) That's a good line. (paper peeling off) - Well, you could sand it.
Well, you would like to, you could sand it. - Paint? - Yes. If it were like that (laughs). It doesn't matter (laughs). I honestly don't know whether to laugh or cry, it's very funny, like (laughs). As fun as our ordeal was, Plasti Dip can look really good. That's why we wanted to show you what a job well done with Plasti Dip looks like. You know, we spend a lot of time masking, and then I think we get too impatient and wash away the paint. Having seen a Plasti Dip auto that really worked well, I think Plasti Dip is a great option.
It just takes research and practice to do it right. I'm just thinking about what could have been. But what, there will always be a next time. I'm sure we'll do Plasti Dip in a future season of HiLow. (soft music) - Oh, it looks much better than ours. It looks amazing (laughs). - I sure wouldn't have done it if we did (laughs). - Are you ready to go see ours? - Yes. - Yes. - Come on. - No, it looks pretty good from a distance, right? It looks good from a distance. (laughs) - We want to show you the good side.
So do you want to come from this side? - Yes Yes Yes. - It looks a little better from this side (laughs). - That's textural. - Be careful, don't scratch it. - Yes Yes. - Some racing action. - Vinyl is what's up. - It must be recognized that there is no excess spraying. - No (laughs). - That's right, look at the wheel arches. - I honestly think we did a professional level masking job on this car. - Yeah, that's, I mean, super important, but then you have to be able to like it... - Paint it. - If then.
Does more expensive mean more is better? (laughing) - Yes. - Yes. - 1000% yes. This seems like it was the worst day of your life. From time to time you have to be humble. And boy did I feel humiliated. If you go to Plasti Dip. Definitely practice first. When done right, it is quite sweet. And I'd like to get there eventually, but man. That was a difficult day. - On the other hand, I am pleasantly surprised at how good the final work turned out. My previous opinion on wraps was that they were kind of cheap and not as good as paint.
Well, I still think they're not as good as paint. I was very impressed with the rigor that the guys who wrapped the Hi Car went through. I think the lesson learned from this is to find a car with good paint and detail it. Looking at the pictures again, I think, "Huh, I miss that car is silver, or..." I definitely miss that your car is white. - It's such a pretty pearl, arctic white. Over time we will remove those things. We'll keep some blue elements because I really like the color, the tone of that blue. But I really want to go back to white eventually.
