2021 Toyota Venza Vs. 2021 Lexus NX300h – Which is the Better Lexus SUV?

Jun 09, 2021
The compact luxury crossover segment continues to be one of the most popular segments here in the United States. Lexus realized that about six years ago, when the company first introduced this vehicle. The Lexus nx crossover based on the Toyota Rav4 has now quickly grown into one from Lexus. The best sellers with the company moving around 60,000 units and this particular one is the

2021

nx300h

, the hybrid version that gets around 31 miles per gallon. Typically, this Lexus crossover is one of the best you can buy in Toyota's portfolio, however, for

2021

there is also this vehicle, the 2021

toyota

venza

,

which

is essentially based on the next-generation nx platform,

which

is the current generation rav4.

It also comes with a hybrid-only powertrain, however, it gets nearly 40 mpg and offers up to 25 additional horses over its Lexus siblings. So the big question I want to answer is are you looking for a compact to midsize luxury crossover? Should they look at the Lexus or should they save some money and go for the Toyota Venza? That's what we're here to find out. Now, when you compare a Toyota to a Lexus, you first have to talk about the price. First I want to clarify that. This Venza Limited costs around forty-three thousand five hundred dollars, while the Lexus here costs around fifty thousand three. one hundred dollars, so what does your extra seven thousand dollars buy you?

More Interesting Facts About,

Well, when you lift the hood, you get hood struts instead of the support rod that the Venza has. However, let's talk about the powertrain because you think they're pretty much identical, whatever they are. They are slightly different because it is based on the previous generation RAV4, starting with a 2.5-liter Atkinson cycle four-cylinder engine. This is the older two and a half liter model offering 154 horsepower on its own. It is combined with three electric motors with all-wheel drive. is standard, the rear electric motor is what drives the rear axle offering another 54 horsepower combined, the Lexus offers 194 horsepower and 199 pound-feet of torque, those numbers match the power we find in a 2018

toyota

rav4 hybrid and the fuel economy is rated to get 33 in the city 30 on the highway, like i said, all wheel drive is standard, everything comes out through an ecbt, a continuously variable transmission, the

lexus

tows, yes they mark An option for a tow package will give them a max atomic capacity of 1500 lbs and this one as is weighs around 4180 lbs so the MX is pretty heavy.

Lexus says you'll get to 60 in about 9.1 seconds 9.1 seconds, that's about two and a half seconds slower or uh or two seconds slower compared to the turbocharged nx300. Now, in contrast, let's look at the Venza, which also has a two-and-a-half-liter naturally aspirated four-cylinder engine running on the Atkinson cycle. This is their new dynamic force engine that offers 176 horsepower on its own. So it already has about 20 more horsepower compared to the gasoline engine in the Lexus. It's also paired with three electric motors at the rear, with a separate rear electric motor driving the rear axle to give you all-wheel drive as standard.
2021 toyota venza vs 2021 lexus nx300h which is the better lexus suv
The Venza offers 219 horsepower, so remember this. It's the new powertrain that's in the RAV4 hybrid that should hit the NX in the next year, it all goes through an ECVT and unfortunately if you're looking to tow the Venza isn't rated for towing surprisingly. this is not ready to tow, but if you want a dog in the vehicle, the rav4 hybrid will tow a maximum of 1750 pounds, the

venza

as seated weighs about 3,900 pounds, so although this is the largest vehicle, It actually weighs less. Heavy vs. the Lexus, which surprised me, you should get to 60 in about seven and a half seconds, so the cheaper Toyota is actually faster than the more expensive Lexus.
Now, looking at the styling of both crossovers, obviously, styling is always subjective, however that may be. I can't deny that they both have a very distinctive look, in fact the new Venza to me looks a lot like a Lexus. The Lexus to me seems a little sportier, but this seems like a more premium and luxury vehicle, so let's talk about styling. difference here let's start with the

lexus

this one of course has the big lexus grille. The hybrid model, of course, has the blue Lexus Hybrid badge. my particular test vehicle here is painted in this very attractive shade of nori green.
You get these premium triple beam full LED headlights. they're like an extra 1500, you also get these Nikes or this little Nike Swoosh of an LED daytime running light and a turn signal, which is nice, the Lexus also gives you LED fog lights down here, overall the grill certainly looks a lot hungrier on the Lexus, it gets even worse if you guys specify the f sport package which this one doesn't have now, in contrast the venza has a cleaner, smoother and more luxurious car look to the design, it has These dual LED projectors with low and high beams with an LED daytime running light and turn signal the Venza does not offer fog lights but you can see that the front fascia is a little less aggressive, it has almost an interpretation of the spindle grille of the lexus, there is definitely more chrome trim on the venza which is surprising because the lexus is the luxury badge, however this vehicle could easily use a luxury badge or a lexus badge on the front instead of the Toyota.
Now let me first talk about the side profile of the Lexus because like I said, the Lexus is based on the old rav4. making this vehicle the smallest vehicle, its wheelbase is 104.7 inches long, it is about an inch shorter than the benza and 182 inches long, it is a little smaller than most of its Competitors, something like a BMW X5 or X3, for example, measure about four inches longer. that this vehicle, the 18 inch wheels that came with my tester are part of the premium package, they are actually an inch smaller than the wheels found on the venza, however they are mounted on 225 60 tires, these wheels are pretty much just what you would expect from a lexus, they are more comfort oriented, they won't be sporty at all now, in contrast, if you want to follow me to the venza, this vehicle is based on the new rav4, like i said, which makes it The wheelbase is a little longer, it's also a little longer overall, at 186 inches long, this is about the size of something like a BMW X3, so don't be surprised to see that the next generation of the nx is basically this size.
The Venns also come with larger wheels. These are 19 inch wheels wrapped in 225 with tires. You also get a bit more ground clearance with the Venza, this one offering 7.7 inches, while the Lexus only offers 6.7. Neither of these vehicles are really off-road ready, which they are not. Surprise me, people in this segment aren't going to do that anyway, but you can get something like a panoramic roof on the venza, however it doesn't actually open, it just offers that ability to freeze and defrost the glass, which can. There isn't even any Lexus product appearing on the back of these two SUVs, the more premium vibe of the Venza shows through, especially when you look at the overall rear design language, where it really doesn't look like any other Toyota product, compared to the Lexus that looks pretty.
Just like any other Lexus vehicle, I like how both vehicles have full LED taillights. You can see that the Lexus has LED turn signals, LED brake lights, LED reverse lights, they updated this design a couple of years ago, in contrast the Venza has a It looks very much like a jaguar, it has these full-width LED taillights, the LED turn signal, however, is completely down here on the lower bumper along with the reverse light. I think this is too low a location I guess. It may be difficult to see this if you know him from the back of the Venza and are very close to him.
I think Toyota should have made the LED turn signal here. It would have also been nice to see a sequential one. led toyota offers that in the toyota avalon now, looking at the cargo areas, this is where again the toyota has a clear advantage over the lexus because this is the slightly larger vehicle, however toyota offers about 28 and a half feet cubic of space in the Venza with the second row up, if you fold it down you get about 55 cubic feet of space, the cargo floor here is pretty high. I like some of the metal trim here, but this has a reduction in cargo capacity over the rav of about 15 cubic feet, so again, this is

better

than the Lexus, but still not wonderful.
In contrast, here's the back seat, the back of the Lexus, as you can see, the videographer has a good amount of equipment on this vehicle and he only offers 16.8. 16.8 cubic feet of space is pretty much the same as something like a midsize sedan to be honest now if you fold everything up and get rid of this cargo cover you get about 54 cubic feet of space, about the same as the venza, However, the Venza offers a little more floor-to-ceiling space compared to the Lexus. They both have that sloping roofline that eats up cargo capacity, so remember, if you want more space, be sure to buy a Toyota. rav4, okay, so we talked about the exteriors, we talked about the trunk capacity, we talked about under the hood, but let's focus on the interior because this is where you are supposed to spend your extra seven grand on the Lexus, now get in first and When closing the door, the door sounds relatively solid.
Remember this car came out in 2015. It was based on a Rav4 that came out in 2012. Now, here is the key fob for the vehicle. You can see it's your typical Lexus key. fob um, it has a blue hybrid badge to show that this is a hybrid Lexus model instead of just being a normal one, Lexus places the button here to start the engine on the top, when you do that you can see there is a tilt electric and telescoping steering wheel, which is nice and the vehicle comes to life. Lexus added a larger 10.3-inch screen a couple of years ago.
They also added Apple Carplay and Android Auto last year, so now you finally have some modern tech conveniences. You can see the larger screen is very welcome, it allows for a split screen layout, however it is not a touch screen like the one found on the new Lexus ES or the new Lexus RX, it is too far away for that, instead Of that, you have to use the lovely touchpad here, which is horrible still one of the worst in the industry so I wish Lexus would have to push this to make it a touchscreen. Now looking at the rest of this cabin, typical Lexus quality here, quality here, it's got really nice, soft touch materials with some. genuine stitching here this is a fake stitching over here there are some faux carbon fiber look moldings that aren't fooling anyone.
I would rather have the luxury package on this vehicle and get the real wood. The door panels also have the same faux stitching. The soft-touch materials, there's some real stitching here, and the window controls have that typical high-quality Lexus feel, but there's a bit of Toyota cheapness that I find here. Remember that fortunately the nx is supposed to be at the low end of the totem pole. There are nice features like heated and cooled seats, like the ones my test vehicle has. It has a 12-way power-adjustable driver's seat with a two-way limb or lumbar position. The Venza, as you'll see, has a four-way lumbar seat, so I'm surprised to see that this doesn't have that exclusive touch and of course you can see here that the gauges are slightly unique to the hybrid model, rather than attacking, They have this power meter, however, if they go to sport mode, it actually takes them on the attack there. when you switch it to sport, which is cool to see the transition like that, remember it's like a digital display.
I also like how the steering wheel is heated which is loaded at 150 with the paddle shifters which is nice when I put the The vehicle in Traverse Manchester has a panoramic view camera so it has the 360 camera from top to bottom. down and the graphics are fine. This is pretty much on par with a mainstream offering, but some of the luxury brands offer a

better

resolution camera. Remember Lexus has better systems. their high-end vehicles now in terms of space the nx still feels quite small here I have a kind of overwhelmed feeling because the dashboard comes out you have this center console quite wide this gear lever here is quite old control the CVT you have some You know , there are additional buttons here for the drive mode selector, you have a volume and a tuning knob here it still has a CD player that reminds you again how old this vehicle isand then here you can see there's a nice area where you can rest your hand while using the touchpad or lift it up and there's a little convex mirror here for those of you who want to, I guess, put on makeup or whatever, it's like a magnifying glass, there's a nice padded armrest on top. here, open this up, they have two USB ports and they have pretty decent storage, so this is pretty much what I expect and then if you're looking for a panoramic sunroof, Lexus doesn't offer that, you can go with this regular sunroof.
That's part of the premium package, so overall the cabin still feels a little tight. The glove box here before I forget is damp and lined with felt. It's actually a pretty good size, so this cabin definitely still feels like a Lexus. It still smells expensive in here. but it's pretty narrow so let's jump into the venza and see how the toyota compares to the lexus so now that we've set our expectations pretty high with the lexus let's jump inside the venza and i have to say the venza has a pretty similar step height , but I'm noticing that the cabin feels much more spacious.
It's still not like you know a Rav4, but it feels more open and airy compared to the Lexus. When I close the door, the door doesn't. It doesn't sound as solid, it sounds a little hollower compared to the Lexus, so I guess the Lexus is heavier. Toyota has added more sound deadening materials on the Lexus, which is what I'm hoping for now. Here is the key fob on the Venza, it's the same one found on something like a Land Cruiser or the Toyota Rav4 Prime, it has the blue Toyota Hybrid badge. and the avenza badge on the back, it's their kiaxi smart system, toyota puts the button here on the center console versus the high position on the lexus, i actually prefer it down here, when you press the button you notice the steering wheel is Tilt and telescopic, which is good.
I didn't expect you to have that feature on the xle. and higher trims, this limited of course comes standard and what's really cool is that the toyota actually has the largest infotainment screen, this is a 12.3 inch screen and it's also a touchscreen , which is nice, it's larger than the Lexus by about two inches and also gives you that split screen view. I like how it is a touch screen again. This is what Lexus should have done with the new nx, but this larger screen is definitely a big improvement. It is included when you opt for a premium xle standard on the limited model.
It's the same one you see on the new Toyota Highlander. Now looking at the rest of these materials here you would think the lexus is miles ahead of the toyota however it is pretty close because just like the lexus you get a genuine soft touch. materials here with some real stitching this is the same soft feel as the softex leather on the seats found on the dash here it's also a soft feel here I like this kind of contrasting brass piece here that contrasts the interior with the trim with aluminum appearance, this area here is a soft touch injection molded plastic, it's hard touch plastic over here, but it's a little bit back, so you're not going to touch as much.
The door panels also have the same soft touch materials with the contrasting stitching. The window switches are one touch automatic for all four, it doesn't feel as clicky as the Lexus, but that's okay, it's still a very nice feeling. nice inside. The Toyota also has a nice 10-inch head-up display and you get this. digital rearview mirror which you can't even have in the Lexus, so again, these are new features that Lexus will probably introduce in the next generation of the nx. Now I also want to briefly talk about the sound system. My tester here has the optional one. nine speaker jbl system which sounds good, sounds decent it actually has two fewer speakers compared to the toyota rav4 on which it is based, the lexus in contrast has a levinson levinson 14 speaker system which sounds better so again it's seven Extra thousand bucks the Apple Carplay you can see here doesn't let you take up the entire screen like you can in the Lexus, but the graphics and resolution are sharp and the screen itself is responsive and easy to use when I put the vehicle in reverse. it gives you a top down 360 camera which actually has better resolution compared to the lexus and also looks better on this bigger screen so keep in mind what i don't like about the venza are the touch sensitive buttons , here you can see many. of capacitive controls here for your audio system uh for your climate control there's only a volume button here instead of a knob Toyota should have done it with a knob here if they go with the base venice they actually have traditional buttons and knobs so keep this in mind, if you don't want to use touch sensitive things, you have a wireless phone charging pad here that the Lexus didn't offer and then you have a drive mode selector here, it's a little bit simpler.
In the Toyota you only have normal and sport eco and it doesn't attack you like it does in the Lexus when you switch it to sport mode. There's a nice center console area here with two cup holders and then this armrest. It also slides fore and aft and reveals the heated and cooled seats, which offer 12-way adjustment in the menza with memory for two. You also have a nice little center console here with two level storage, which is nice and you can see here. the glove box is cushioned but not felt lined it's about the same size i mean it's the one in the lexus and then above me you can see there's some led lighting and this really cool roof that allows you to freeze and defrost the roof at the touch of a button, however, it doesn't actually open.
Keep in mind that if you want a piano roof on the Venza, this is your only option if you are looking for a regular sunroof. Toyota doesn't offer it on the venza you have to go for this big roof that doesn't open now let's take a look at the back seat of the lexus nx because remember this is not their smallest crossover however it doesn't offer as much space compared to their competitors, lexus tells you. I have about 36 inches of legroom back here, not bad. In fact, I'm surprised to find that the floor is almost completely flat, which is good for seating three people.
You have air vents in the rear seats back here, you have two map pockets, however, if we are looking for features like USB ports, heated rear seats, Lexus doesn't offer that on the nx, you have to step up to an rx if you want that feature, what they did include, though, are these really nice perforated Nulux leather seats, these are synthetic leather, uh. If you want real leather a Lexus charges another couple grand extra, the seats also recline a little bit which is nice, they don't slide back and forth, but they have this armrest here that folds down and gives you the cup holders here, so in general.
The back seat of the Lexus can definitely be used, but I think the Venza offers more space, so let's get into that and check it out now compared to the Lexus nx. The rear seat of the Venza is more spacious, however, I notice that the door here does not open. It's pretty big, which might make this a problem if you have to open the back doors enough to have a car seat back here, but once you get back here, you can see that Toyota says it's about 37.8 inches of legroom back here. About an inch and a half more legroom in the real world, it really doesn't seem like a lot of space.
It doesn't have more space compared to the Toyota Rav4 on which it is based. The floor here is not completely flat like you find in However, the Lexus does have these air vents in the rear seats, which is nice, it has two USB charging ports down here. However, if you are looking for heated rear seats, the Venza doesn't offer that feature either, you have to look again at something. like a toyota rav4 to have heated rear seats now in terms of the materials, toyota actually puts soft touch materials here as well, which is similar to the lexus.
In fact, I also like the light wood grain finish, which this wood is fake but looks better. that the fake carbon fiber aluminum trim on the lexus and if you fold this armor down so you can see it gives you two cup holders and the toyota also offers rear seats that recline slightly however instead of a lever on the bottom , here toyota puts the lever on top, so it's a little less convenient to use now, above me, you can see that the panoramic roof lets in a lot of light. Remember this roof doesn't open, it just has the ability to freeze and defrost the glass, so it's kind of very Mercedes, however, it doesn't freeze and defrost itself in a very, very elegant way, it just happens. very fast but you still can't even get this feature on a lexus so kudos to toyota for introducing something like this so i know.
Many of you are probably wondering why I would want to compare a Toyota and a Lexus. I mean, the Lexus will clearly have the best driving dynamics and the best interior, it'll be quieter, it'll be quicker, right? necessarily, so let's start first on the new venza. Remember this is based on the new tng, our architecture, which is different from the current lexus nx, which is based on the previous generation rav4, which should receive a complete redesign very soon in this interior. it feels pretty good, you have a bigger screen compared to the lexus which really surprised me and this hybrid powertrain puts out about 30 more horsepower than the lexus, it now gives you the ability to coast in a solo mode electric, although not for long you can see. there's the gas engine on the floor and you should be looking at 0-60 in about 7.5 seconds, it's perfectly adequate, the engine itself makes noise and hums, the CVT is responsive enough, and you know, with those three engines electric, this vehicle works.
I feel relatively encouraged. I'm impressed. This is a great driving hybrid SUV. It simply won't drive the way an enthusiast would prefer with its noisy four-cylinder. Its CVT moans, but you can't argue with the performance and responsiveness. The management of El Venza is also pretty good. Remember that Toyota has been trying to adopt a sportier style with the design of many of their vehicles and it really shows even in something that is supposed to be some sort of conventional crossover like the benza. I floor it there when I turn, you actually felt a little kick from the electric motor in the rear while turning the rear, it feels good, the venza feels very agile, it feels very planted, it feels very like a lexus, apart from the whining engine, but when we get into the crossover Lexus nx, has the same type of whining engine, although I suspect it will be quieter for more sound denting materials.
Visibility in the benzo is also pretty good. The view from behind is not horrible. Also, although it has a sloping roof, the steering is responsive enough, the seats are also plush and comfortable, although they are not real leather seats, the Lexus has real leather seats, which I noticed feels noticeably much more comfortable, which I expect to be significantly more. expensive compared to the venza, you'll have to pay for it somewhere or get something for that money, but I like the responsiveness of this one, you know, the newer hybrid powertrain, the two liter dynamic force engine and a half offers more horsepower and torque, you know?
If you get more combined horsepower, you'll also get better fuel economy in this vehicle. In my weeks of testing I averaged about 35 miles per gallon, which is about five miles per gallon more than what I got in the Lexus, so this is a lot. Plus you know, improved vehicle in terms of fuel economy, so that doesn't really surprise me. It has more efficient powertrain dynamics. Now, in terms of everything else, does this feel like a Lexus? Yes, apart from the leather on the seats. it is not real leather it has better technology it has good visibility it also has good safety technology this is the newer version of toyota safety sense 2.0 compared to the previous system found in the lexus which only makes an annoying beep, i prefer this system, so It's really surprising if you want a Lexus crossover that's a hybrid that's good as a compact to midsize, this may actually be the best option, but let's jump into the Lexus nx and see if that Lexus badge and extra money.
This is an older platform, it may still surprise me by choosing the Lexus over this Venza, which is supposed to be a step below, so in a perfect world I should be able to get into any Lexus vehicle and just think of myself, This is significantly better than anything Toyota currently offers, however, we just got out of the new Venza and are now inthe 2021 Lexus nx 300h. Remember that this is an older platform, but Lexus has always done a good job of offering interiors that feel. substantially better compared to their Toyota counterparts and I have to say this cabin has some nicer materials, however, don't you know, substantially better, especially considering the price delta of these vehicles.
I am also noticing that I am missing a front screen which is not available. on the nx and that really cool digital rearview mirror is also not available on the nx, you have to upgrade to a higher model or newer lexus vehicle to get those features now, this has 25 less horsepower compared to the venza, let's switch it to sport mode which gives you this cool little tack that magically appears when you switch it to sport, yeah you'll definitely notice the sluggishness of this powertrain a lot more, I mean the venza will get to 16 in about 7.6 seconds, this one vehicle takes closer to 9 seconds, 9.1 actually. is what Lexus says, let's try it here from a standstill, yes this is pretty unacceptably slow considering the Lexus badge compared to the turbocharged petrol nx, this is almost two seconds slower from zero to sixty which is a very very slow CVT response really unhappy. the new venza is much more agile with the new hybrid powertrain uh with the additional 25 horses the cvt has also been tuned this is tremendously slow it looks like a slow corolla and even the new corolla is faster than this vehicle so it's kind of insult Clearly, Lexus has some work to do with the next generation of the nx, so you'll notice it right away driving the two back to back.
The Venza has a superior powertrain. I also noticed in my real-world fuel economy testing. The Venza got 32 mpg on a highway loop I drove where I literally drove 50 straight miles on a highway route, the same driving route in this Lexus gave me about 28 miles per gallon so there is a 4 mpg difference compared to that and it's constantly because I was stepping on the accelerator this vehicle maintains speed with traffic and just the efficiency of this powertrain is the older technology it's not as efficient now where the nx shines compared to the venza is in the sporty factor uh the nx definitely feels like the sportier driving vehicle the steering is a little heavier it's about the same in terms of quickness the suspension doesn't feel as hard it just feels like a vehicle heavier, the venza already feels substantial and heavy, but actually, this feels like a slightly heavier, slightly sportier driving car, uh, and in terms of quietness, you see they sound pretty much the same to me .
You know, normally you would assume that Lexus is going to be the noticeably quieter vehicle, but you know, driving the Venza and the. nx back to back sound pretty much the same except for the fact that you have to listen to this throaty four cylinder engine moan a lot more in this vehicle than in the toyota in terms of seat comfort, i think the seats in this car They are being a little more luxurious, which is interesting because this one has the new lux leather, so it's not the actual full leather that you have to pay an extra two thousand dollars to get the luxury package, but I just like the seats are more padded. padded and I also like the mark levinson sound system in this car, it sounds noticeably better compared to the jbl system and the venza, so those are two winning factors of course, with the lexus, the driver assistance technology, The Venzas is also the 2.0, this is now the Lexus. security system plus 2.0, both work equally well, nothing class leading, nothing extraordinary, just gets the job done and comes standard on both vehicles at any price, which is why Lexus sells about 60,000 nx in the US each year , this is a very important model for the company, it is actually the second best-selling model for Lexus, the Lexus rx is the one that sells more than 100,000 units, so this is a very important vehicle for Lexus and, as you saw , the current generation nx is getting pretty old, it came out in 2015. and when you compare it to other crossovers, other luxury crossovers, you really start to see a lot of the weaknesses of the nx, however, it does have a couple of strengths.
I still think it's a really great looking vehicle, especially in this pearl nori green exterior color, I still think. which offers a lot of practicality and at 30 mpg combined you still get pretty decent gas mileage; However, when you look internally at Toyota's own lineup, this is where the Venza's strengths come into play because this Lexus starts at around forty thousand dollars for the hybrid. version around thirty-seven eight, if you go for the regular gasoline version, this starts at around thirty-two thousand dollars. The limited model I'm showing you costs around forty-three thousand five hundred, which puts the Toyota at around seven thousand. less expensive dollars and honestly after looking at the two vehicles back to back I realized that the toyota is the one that actually feels better, sure the lexus has slightly better materials and the lexus badge and if you like it However, this for forty-three thousand dollars, the Venza is technically the best Lexus, so until the next generation of the nx comes out in 2022, my money would be on the Venza because this is simply the best vehicle for live, has better technology and more space.
The interior gets better fuel economy and is also significantly faster, but with all that being said, I hope you enjoyed this comparison test between of course the Lexus NX300H and the new Toyota Venza if you are also looking to check out the latest cars. that I'm trying.
