2021 Gladiator Rubicon EcoDiesel OffroadNov 22, 2021
hello and welcome to the motoring adventures off road review of this
ecodieselof course this truck is not going to do much on this little test hill huh we are going to do other things with it maybe today because as you can see this is the largest possible articulation of this hill and we still have all four wheels on the ground no problem that's with the sway bar off but even with it on i'm pretty sure it would be on the ground , so anyway, let's get right in. I'm backing up this hill and quite a steep 26 degree now but this is doing it all with just this little cruise control control. crawl control button there now we are down off the hill but that was pretty awesome how controlled and slow it was able to go back that the speedometer never moved so it never moved above zero i am sure i will very impressive half mile an hour in reverse um let's go ahead and try that and drive and again this is in measured this thing watch the truck shake when i give it some gas it leans all the way it's kinda funny it gets It feels like it's on really high torque like a semi or something when they're revving under load anyway, so to adjust the speed of it, you can see 0.6 miles per hour right under the temp and it pulls towards down put this in manual mode and pull down to go up and push forward to go down so this hill i haven't had a vehicle capable of going up it yet i haven't tested it with the wrangler i'm sure the wrangler l or would have done well huh wrangler
rubiconunlimited with the diesel but this of course jeep
gladiatorrubicon diesel or 26 degrees 27 i think it could go up to 28 28 there you go 29 30 and it's pretty loose there you go 31 degrees 32 then we go downtown tall right there so it's too bad we'll get some external shots of that too but pretty cool this truck's biggest nemesis is they break off at an angle so you can see in there and I don't mean these s rails are kind of low , but it's way below if I turn the camera to the side hope that doesn't bother you too much anyway it's way down where it has where it bottoms out in reverse four wheel drive without touching the gas we can go up to 9 degrees 10 degrees 11 13 settled at 13 degrees there uh that's not gas at all just letting the truck roll back that's how low the gear is and how good the torque is we'll go ahead and try to keep going . this other hill so on a lot of vehicles including this one we are in manual first gear but first gear is lower than reverse so here we are again my feet aren't on the brake or accelerator and we're just going going up this hill which doesn't It doesn't look as steep in the video as it actually is but we made it at about 12 13 degrees in reverse we're still going 20 plus degrees 25 is where it stopped on the way interesting ok just wanted to show you where this is the trail camera is helpful so that's my line of sight right now i can't really see the road and this hill is not that steep but if you go down here to the camera now i can see the road and you can see the road on the cam all the time so that's where the trail cam is most useful here we are in the high speed
offroadsection and I've driven it a few times just to see we're about 18 miles per hour and I noticed that with the stabilizer bar sway bar disengaged it was doing 15 miles an hour when we bottomed out in that bump and that's on so with the sway bar disengaged it actually seems to wander a bit more so I thought it would be a smoother ride with the sway bar disengaged and It could be a little smoother but it kicks it off like 18 mph anyway so you lose it fast but it wanders a lot without it plugged in so here we are with it plugged in and there are sections that depend on how rough the roads are bumps which is really weird because this has a lot of wheel travel but bottoms out really fast over not excessively big bumps so there are sections of course where it can go up to 20 but I would give it a lower rating , its better than the wrangler for sure and i think it has a lot to do with the wheelbase , maybe the longer vehicles are more stable but its not Still not as good as the trd pro so q What I would love to see or drive is the mojave version because it is designed to do this. the ground and it takes a minute for a truck to figure it out but once it does it makes the rest of the climb pretty easy and I think that's all because of that articulation now turning traction control off let's see how it does it .
You've got the brake system that applies the brake to the spinning wheel and you'll notice a lot more wheel spin here, more wheel speed before it transfers power but it seems to do it a little faster here we are in four wheel drive high with traction control on and I was actually really surprised that it took so much effort to do it in four wheel drive so you can see the wheels spin a bit before the jeep finally figures out that it transfers power to the wheels with drive and the rest of the climbs easily despite my best efforts here somehow i managed to grab a little better line and not get the wheels off the ground so you did see that little slide there but i even tried to back up and get to where the wheels are on the ground simply makes this rise not a problem.
Needed to align it a bit better when switching to four wheel drive. Traction control low and electronic stability control disengage automatically, so you're left with the jeep's brake-locking differential to transfer power. from side to side and saw the rear end lift just a hair there, even so, I didn't line it up well enough for both the front and rear wheels to lift off the ground. It makes the climb not a problem. all wheel drive stuff with you so obviously here's the four wheel drive transfer case lever and anytime basically i don't know what the jeep says probably under 55 or under 65 miles an hour you can just grab that pull it back and you're in four wheel drive that's all it takes when you go to low four you have to put the jeep in neutral; otherwise it won't shift so I can't even put it in neutral on the transfer case because the transmission needs to be in neutral now I'm in neutral here and it shows it right there full drive neutral warning so even if i go to park now the truck is going to roll because the transfer case is in neutral go back to neutral there and then in four wheel drive pull that lever all the way back now we are in four wheel drive low and yes c is disabled track control is disabled automatically so on this particular one ok all rubicons gladiators so two back to two wheel drive and if i hit the rear locker just pushing it down to lock the axles switch to four wheel drive low so even on four wheel drive high we will again to lock the axles switch to four in low so in the mojave I think you can lock the rear end in high four wheel drive there are definitely times if it's in mud and sand and stuff especially with this diesel you don't get very much rev range high you might want to be in high range with the axles locked at least the rear locked but you can't do that so we go back to four low and we can hit down it's locked push up now both the Front and back are locked and you can see that on the right so this is the SUV page and you go there and you can see the three locks on there you also have this SUV. road plus button which when you're four down gives you extra rock crawling control so your throttle is basically dead so you can have super fine control of your throttle um very little throttle for a big entry and if you engage the off-road plus in high four wheel drive is more tuned for sand and mud to help you clear the tires and keep you moving so back to this you have the powertrain here that will show you the steering angle what is your transfer case.
The sway bar is connected and to disconnect the sway bar press this button and hopefully we don't have to move the sway bar disconnect in progress. A lot of times you have to move so it looks like we will um I've seen other videos of people having trouble with that just make sure you move a bit there you have the sway bar disconnected and now the sway bar. Disconnected front axle is locked center is locked because once you go to four wheel drive there is no center diff and then the rear diff is locked it shows a lock there but really no center diff. which are vital pitch and roll same as you can get on the other screen only bigger and then of course the tracking camera back and forth with zoom still in reverse so that's a summary how shutdown works. -road system works we're going to go back to two wheel drive and go do the steep hill climb we're just going to do a couple we're not going to go through all of that I might be testing the off-road modes , the sway bar can't be disengaged in two wheel drive either, it needs to be in four wheel drive so it will automatically engage as soon as possible and basically again you need to have movement there, the wheels need to be moving. side to side in the front so I articulate a bit to block other vehicles I'd be worried about trying to drive straight up this hill but not on the gladiator the approach angle is extremely good on this thing and it really isn't no problem here we have 4 wheel drive high i'm just going to lock it in first gear and nothing else has been done so sway bar is connected
offroadmode plus is not hasn't kicked in or anything traction control is still on whatever we're switching to four wheel drive and looking for Drive around here a bit and one thing is you can hear the roof creak as you articulate on this thing so that there we go really spinning the pedals on the flat now we're at 2000rpm and it'll figure it out it'll figure it out from here the rest of the climb is easy so it took a little bit of effort we're destroying this hill but what i really want to try now it's when i push the button plus off road what will it do? when driving i heard the fan come on but our temps are ok so off road plus it shows the jeep in the sand there so even more wheel spin we are starting to go off course , i'd rather risk anything we're just gonna hit four low and off road plus let's see what it does let's turn that off there we go off road plus there it goes so now it shows a rock mode and let's see if this gets us back on track. little bit of acceleration i can hear the abs and feel the abs work hard to do that huh really this vehicle has an open diff erentials and stuff lemme go ahead and reverse it back downhill just by letting the engine run stop and it's a little too fast for me so I braked there and I'm still applying the brakes so here we go. we're taking the brakes all the way off it's about four or five miles an hour in reverse going down this hill go ahead lock it just for demo purposes and it's locked front and rear axle lock go ahead and get the angle indicator on the next vehicle i bring here dodge for next week i will bring a shovel and a pick most likely but with both axles locked here we have two wheels in the air and no problem well at least one wheel in the air ok we reset that cam here while we test the breakout angle you can see the lowest skid plate the lowest point of the vehicle happens to be the worst point for breakout angle it still clears it but it was very close definitely should have put the camera on wide view . of linear but you can.
I still see a lot of the guarding and how most of the components are lifted, except that the skid plate that covers the transfer case is the lowest point of the vehicle and is the dead center between the front and rear axles . Everything else is pretty well protected and elevated. pretty high one other thing to note is the spare tire is the same as all the other tires on the vehicle ok four wheel drive first gear low and we're going to drop this I'm still on the break now and there we fully disengage the brake, it's reading about two miles per hour, this is with the differentialslocked up so i have the most amount of control best we've ever had so far on par with that jeep wrangler rubicon of course that has the same gear ratio but let's be silly today four offroad tall plus give it a twist we'll see what we can do oh well not as bad as i expected well that's definitely a weak point thanks for looking engine off road adventures review of this
2021gladiator rubicon eco diesel cheap as expected extremely capable i don't have the ability to take this to the limit might have a place where i could take it but i'd be too worried about body damage and such a thing is really so capable right now that's all the articulation you get here in the rear which is a ton so if i lift this , you can see it coming sorry turning the camera on anyway it comes off the ground that's all you can get there so the front sway bar is it's connected to it, disconnected that wheel would still be on the ground as you can see here it's a bit more too but it's also about max articulation there anyway extremely capable vehicle really very aggressive tires Deep treads and lots of torque, I love the diesel. engine in this thing and it matches it so for low speed rock hauling stuff diesels are by far the best off road just because low torque and the problem is when you get to places where you need to accelerate you don't have great rev range you're pretty limited you know catching up with a diesel so having the high speed off road diesel for sand and mud is not that great but for low speed off road awesome if you liked what you saw, be sure to hit subscribe hit the bell for notifications be sure to give me a thumbs up if you liked the video if you didn't and give me a thumbs down be sure to comment below and let me know why thanks for watching have a great day
