championship games and in between you're gonna get analysis from

state

champs

owns TJ Kelly Scott Bernstein and myself it has been a crazy
season it's been a wild postseason and it was a great

finals

with everything to offer so let's get right to it and we're gonna begin in Division four if you look back to the start of the season South field Christian may have been the defending

champs

but two of their best players had transferred away and then the team got off to a 2 and 5-star head coach Josh Baker got his Eagles to stretch their wings winning 20 of their next 21 they figured it out but Frankfort came into this
contest with 21 wins of their own they had an unbelievable Cinderella like run through the postseason overtime wins in the districts and quarterfinal buzzer beater to win the regional title and a one point win over favored and Wyoming tri-unity Christian in the semis Panthers in their first ever

state

final and that alone was reason to celebrate what's even more amazing is Frankfort lost all five starters a year before had a first year head coach and Dan Loney yet here they were this senior
big man Jack Resnick and the kiss off the glass now South field Christian is deep contributions come from a variety of guys Noah wrecker averaged 11 points a game during this season he's crafty bucket the Eagles did a phenomenal job working the ball in transition case in point Deshawn Humphrey doing his magic Johnson impression Malcolm King the beneficiary Southfield Christian out to a ten-point advantage Frankfort was the 14 from the Northwest Conference to make it to a championship game in
the last three years senior will new bold stops and pops from the top of the art well done but the Panthers down 24 12 after the open so many weapons for South field Christian wrecker wreaking havoc he contributed ten points of the cause the Panthers trailed heavily but never took a possession off check out the junior Luke Hammond nice but Frankfort trail by 17 the Eagles shot 61 percent in the first half and have a talented squad coming back next year then junior Humphrey till Iraq counted and
the contact game-high 20 points SC carried a 22 point lead into halftime you just couldn't stop the Eagles you could only hope to contain them the senior John Sanders the drive gets the contested land nice way to finish her high school career young man the biggest lead for South field Christian grew to 29 frankfort had one guy in the third responsible for all of their scoring this senior new poll 9 it is 17 in the third quarter from way downtown now some of the Frankfort youngsters got some
playing time and any bucket energized the Panther faithful but this was Eagle time Humphrey with the bounce speed to a cutting Sanders he finished with 19 both teams didn't shoot great in the second half but SC just wasn't going to be denied Ramon Scruggs buries a team's eight triple of the morning South field Christian back-to-back

state

champions Frankfort Falls 63 to 39 Eagles fifth

state

title in the last eight years TJ Kelly here with

state

champs

along with second time

state

champion Deshawn Humphries from Southfield Christian his second championship just talked about playing more of a major role in this for this team than you added you know when you are a freshman or sophomore what does this mean to you to have you know a little bit of weight on your shoulders and being able to carry the Eagles I mean it means everything to me I mean every challenge I take I take my head I take head on and uh we lost a couple of players but you just showcase a showcase like what I
can do what we all can do as a team and just create it my teammates man they they look at me forward to get going and uh they got my back if I make a mistake they tell me keep going keep going and they always give me the rhythm so it's a blessing man it's a blessing coach Baker talked about uh you know just having the the cohesiveness of past guys that graduated from Southfield Christian you know they're going on to play in college and when they come back what kind of you know what
kind of aura do they bring with them they say you guys need to win championships - what are they telling you over the summer is for sure expectation to keep the winning tradition going and this is family they're brothers so they they know that we work hard and they tell us to continue to work hard be a leader like Bryce he takes us keep going he takes us to Brock comeback so it's a families a brotherhood and they expect they expect I have high expectations and yes I expect Asian for
ourselves as well obviously make sure our expectations are to return to win another championship you know you lose some key guys John Sanders came up huge this year what are you doing as a senior next year to really make sure that you know as the captain to really bring everybody on board and say this is what we do on 12-mile oh just keep the leadership tell everybody the experience that I have and just continue to be the leader and push everybody every day in practice and be the example like I
can't be slacking and I'm in practice I got to tell everybody when they slack and they keep you going and uh just keep the tradition going man we gonna keep you rolling why don't you talk about what south of what you've done in the last eight years for South field cushion and winning those five championships yeah it's been incredible it's just been fun you know the biggest thing is just the amount of people that are involved in the program and we have my god Tim Clark you
know doing video for us from the school and you have Chris Webber making sure I can get everything in on the computer and people taping all over the

state

and four and five coaches putting in hours and hours every single week and parents putting in hundreds of hours and the kids putting in all kinds of extra time coach down into the admin just putting in a ton of help to make our program great so our trainer like people don't understand how big it is and how many people help seems like
it's almost like a part-time volunteer job you know to be to be a high school coach you know I'm whatever level you or you're on but then when you extend it to late March every year and everyone's like you know it's eight gig isn't gonna be up it the first week of March you know we're gonna keep on going you know cuz I'm gonna Southfields Christian obviously a testament to you what are some of the things that makes people actually say you know what this is
something I want to be a part of yeah that's a great question I think the biggest thing is they believe in our program so you get like-minded people who say hey we want our young guys to the Christian education follow after Christ have that character so I think that's the most rewarding thing is all of our guys from Romulus and from SES they're like great great people they have great work ethics and great jobs and great careers and great families and you know they're just that
the character and the discipline from from sports is what carries over so you get coaches who buy into that and believe in it and then they get connected with guys and then you can't you can't leave because we got our eighth graders coming up and you can't leave because you got to see dejan through and you got to see Noah through and then we're gonna have to see V through you know so those are the things that get coaches to buy in sounds like a great job you know they bear very
convincing a congratulations on another championship see you in 2020 I got my start in officiating when a friend told me I should try it at first I just did

basketball

and I got hooked before long I had at baseball softball football and volleyball I really enjoy giving back to the game working with kids and working with my local association to recruit and train new officials I want to say to anybody that officiating is great help kids and stay connected to the game always need new officials the

nation welcome inside the comfy confines of the hang time podcast studios I am here joined by Scott Bernstein and TJ Kelly we do been doing it all season long so if you want to hear some great hoops analysis this is what we do and we're here to kind of bolster and enhance our digital edition of the

state

championships by breaking down each one of the
games and just giving you a little bit more insight and as to what took place and in Division four you know here we had two teams coming in we kind of felt as we've been saying all along that Southfield Christian was kind of the juggernaut a dynasty yes yes and Frankfort was a team that came in and boy had a magical run in the playoffs buzzer beaters and just getting it done and found a way to beat Wyoming trying to be Christian which of course the week before we all said right it was
destined to be try you know yeah exactly but this one from the onset belong to the Eagles and you know they really showed their depth in that one too yeah congratulations to coach Loney everybody first year but the whole team had a total of 15 minutes of varsity experience coming into this year and they flipped the script and went all the way to the

state

line amazing yeah that's good they come through a tough conference you know they're playing glen lake you know they've been tested
and also you know we're familiar with frankfort or you know if you ever go to the semi-

finals

because they it seems like they've been there I think low knees a coach low knees younger brother or family member was all he went to Benzi central but all his family went to Frankfort but a bad taste of them all over a Benzi central huh I don't know diversity Dan played at Western

Michigan

in the mid-2000s did a really good job with this squad I think that semifinal win were they they had a
big lead and then lost the big lead and then had to come back I think that took a lot out of them yeah and south of Christian as opposed to that was fresh had had another blowout in the semi

finals

they just kind of rampage through the

state

tournament yeah another example of how that non-conference schedule that they always play under the Josh Baker regime where they play all Class A and B schools really get them ready for that small school tournament yeah and you know they routed their way to
the fifth

state

title in eight years yes and and it doesn't look like this locomotive is slowing down anytime soon they bring back the bulk of their lineup they bring back the heart and soul of that team in Dasia on Bubba Humphrey who's a division 1 recruit you know one of the most recent in a line of college recruits that are coming out of a small school program that are you know going to the Division one yeah last year the captain from their

state

championship team Bryce Washington
he's playing at Penn right now and excited about fine yeah yeah so it's great to see a small school like South eel Christian a program like that putting out consistently college talent consistently winning

state

titles and I think the the only thing you can kind of compare this to or at least where it's trending towards is the East Catholic reign under Dave soles where they won eight

state

championships in like 25 years so this is five and eight I would guess that they have a chance
to get three more in the next decade or so depending on you know if Coach Baker stays around I think we got to get them out of that League though hey I've been saying they should leave the MIAC yeah at the at the same time I mean what Lee do they go do they just play in the smaller and just play in the CD or play in the Central Division well I say that well I would think that those Lord I mean if they were able to play you know Loyola and you talking about divine child yeah yeah but you know
still at the same time I think that they would get better competition that and nothing against the kids or anything like that yeah one wee game that was 17 years ago that was either the second third year of Baker's reign there he got there and 11 and 12 season they've only lost one League game it was by one point to inner-city Baptist and it just seems like it seems like they don't just win their games they're winning their games by 20 30 40 points it's just it's not
serving anyone's best interest for them to be in that league in right and I've looked into this game you know just in seeing what they did with the summit in the semi

finals

kind of rolled through there and I've seen I think we've seen Southfield Christian sometimes you know just maybe become will play a little bit lackadaisical and stuff like that all we're gonna witness team in there looking at rosters and stuff like that or we're gonna kill them on paper blah blah
whatever it only had seven turnovers and that's phenomenal for NBA teams to be happy to have seven turnovers and so I think that that was key and that they've stuck to their game plan they said look this is what we're gonna do they were extremely extremely efficient a lot of balance and a lot of balance I mean it was great to see so many guys I love it at the end of games you know I mean obviously there's a lull for one team but the excitement for the other but when you get to
see the guys that you know aren't necessarily all playing all the time or they're getting a little ton of playing time but they get to step on them on the court on the big stage at the president Center in the

state

finals

and that's a memory obviously this is what high school bass and their defense was outstanding I think they for 17 turnovers yeah and we heard in the press conferences after both the semi

finals

and the

finals

these teams that they're usually meeting at the
present they don't see this type of physicality this type of athleticism this type of swarming full-court pressure on a gaming game out basis during their regular season so it's you can look at it on tape and you can watch it and you can analyze it and you can sit there you know in the in the film room and try to X know it but when you're seeing it you know live-fire like that oh yeah it's it's difficult to react to and difficult to combat when you just you're not used to
it man imagine of Harlan was on that team and and this team and we've talked about it a little bit at length but let's just review it real quick this alpha Christian team lost two big transfers Caleb Hunter left to go play it at you DJ and try to a win a title in the in Division one ranks he was their starting point guard last year Harlan Beverly who was a mr.

basketball

contender could very easily been second in that voting to Romeo Weems went to prep school in Florida so you know they
they had kind of reinvent themselves on the fly they started the season one three and then was two and five five and then they reeled off 19 of their final 20 they're only lost in the last two and half months of the season was to River Rouge who played in the Division two

state

championship game yes no but what the thing I really I'm really impressed by when we're talking about Bubba Humphrey a kid that was you know second or you know not saying maybe third or fourth option last year
2019 mhsaa state finals boys basketball state champs michigan
he had to step up not just take on the scoring load but take on the leadership load and he really embraced it yeah I'm a kid that has really kind of come into his own both as a as a playmaker and as a you know the straw that stirs the drink the the emotional spark plug for that team and you look at a stat line in that

state

championship game he had 20 points six rebounds six assists as TJ said a couple minutes was just the definition of efficiency he was kind of a microcosm of that whole
team okay all right so and again if you want to hear more insight and analysis we have an audio podcast so we're doing what we're talking about not just the championship game so kind of recapping the season so if you want to go there you can check it out on your favorite platform but right now we were all fired up to see what was gonna happen in the Division one game and I think we can honestly say we were a little shocked I lived up to the hype but it certainly lived up to the hype I
lived up to all the hype yeah well we'll get to that right after you check out these highlights say what you want to say the game lived up to the hype it was an instant classic bottom line we got our money's worth in the Division one

state

championship the storylines were intriguing ud Jesuit our number one team pretty much all season long a cub team looking to cement their legacy as Cassius Winston and the game did back in 2016 Forbes and Lanny Lincoln an amazing postseason run of
buzzer beaters at brouhaha first-ever appearance in the

state

championship game the number one freshman in America Imani Bates hoping to also grab the mantle of number one player in the

state

and it would be a player who didn't even live in the mitten this time of year ago who'd hit a shot for the ages on the

state

's biggest stage in the early going we were looking for tone setters how about this this six foot eight baits going in for the land but the senior Daniel Friday sending fat
into the seats goodness Lincoln with 22 wins this season contributions come from a plethora of playmakers the senior Amaury fry from Spartan Stadium Railsplitters led 15 to 14 after one the brown university recruit Friday had himself a game came in averaging 17 a game to the 10 and it's in and believe this Bates averages 30 points in games right back the crossover for to Lincoln down 20 to 17 but coach Pat Donnelly had his Cubs prepared from the outside the senior Jordan Montgomery 30 Ball
corner pocket coach Davis and his railsplitters felt they belonged with every single team they played no intimidation under two minutes ago in the half in transition Jalen Fisher over to Cameron Johnson the senior hits the floater the cubs program has been so dominant winners of seven straight Catholic League crowns no school in ever won more than four in a row close the half on a 7 nothing run Julian Dozier had six assists this one to the Junior JD Morgan Giudice went in a halftime leading 32
to 23 the splitters cut into the deficit to start the second half the transfer from Memphis to be close to his mom the senior Fischer fires and fills it wild down a six-pack after Lincoln took the lead 39 38 you will be back in the driver's seat and how about this nitrous oxide boost 5 Friday next possession Friday again will not be denied and one team high 19 points and you know it was only a matter of time until the fifteen-year-old showed everyone that it's going to be a great four
years taxi runway left on Lincoln trail by four into that exciting fourth quarter both exchanging hoops caleb hunter finds Montgomery who knocks down his third triple on the afternoon 4 minutes left in the game Lincoln down 62-54 Bates with the dish to fry who drops another from down town to to go in the content Railsplitters down just a bucket Bates wants the ball and does not miss game-high 23 we were not in at 60 you addy took back the lead railsplitters unfazed Bates with the long jumper no
but fry the putback 15-point afternoon and we were tied at 62 14 seconds left now in a tie game Lincoln going to take the final shot and it's that man fades with the call Defense Forces the dunk to fry shot too strong Fisher in perfect position buzzer game over that man from Memphis wins the division one

state

championship walk-off style 64 262 fill five the newly crowned Division one champion her Jalen Fisher senior guard from Ypsilanti Lincoln talked about hitting that big buzzer beater to
win the championship at first man it's just it's just crazy because at first is it was supposed to go to money but they double-team them in a moment so Mari Mari shot the shot I thought it was gonna go in but it tipped off the front of the rim came to me I shot it and they went in and all I saw was black and I was happy for me and my team to win a

state

championship how was it playing with a freshman the attention you know you I mean last year you're going in front you're playing
in front of crowds with a couple of hundred people - all of a sudden you're playing in you know thousands of fans you know three or four thousand people in Eastern

Michigan

's gym then you go to the Callahan Hall it's sold out there there are another eight nine thousand ten thousand people here today I'm at the big stage is the big stage how was it playing on those stages throughout the year it felt great Lincoln has never had that before we had a game at home I think it was
against Catholic it was he brought out kids to where they were sitting on a baseline they couldn't even move it's a great environment at plan environment I just love it here with Imani Bates superstar freshman congratulations on winning ypsilanti Lincoln's first

basketball

championship there's been a whirlwind of you are this you are that you are this when did you decide that you were gonna be what you are today you know I just stay in the gym work hard every day in the gym and
you know I just put in the work and I get the results that I want great supporting cast when you join the team in you oh you know said hey we're gonna make the Breslin we're there any Snickers or anything like that from seniors juniors because the obvious you have the confidence but this is a platform that these guys have never been on and you had success howhow did you extend that to the rest of your teammates every day in practice I'll compete with them hi Marco sir I was just
competing the practice oh I make a better every day because you know I just had to bring that competitive edge that I have you know and I just helped us out a lot a lot everything else is all right would you just turn in 15 obviously a world of

basketball

ahead of you what are you doing to work on your game - you know really go to that next level you can do push ups and stuff like that but let's talk about you know what you're really working on right now I just go like you know I train
with this guy named jewel Hanlon and PJ performance ladies got my buddy right and my

basketball

trailer right so you know my dad we work out every day at my school just like weightlifting like all right one last question coach Davis talked about this being a surreal kind of feeling when in this championship you alluded to you wanted to win three more here in the

state

of

Michigan

what would you bring to the table in 2020 21 and then your senior year in 2022 all right you know just i'ma bring
everything I got it just get better from you know today and just keep learning and get better every day we talked earlier you know a month ago a couple weeks ago about when was the first time that you just went Wow than seeing a mighty big the first time I went wild was in third grade when he hit 22 three-pointers in a row that's the first time I said Wow and you know he just developed so much from there but he's always been that been a kid that loved the gym and putting the time so
I'm not surprised that he's able to do what he doing he's putting in a lot of time and of course being sixth aid is not definitely a plus you've coached some other guys ty gross at Eastern

Michigan

Trey Jackson before you know when it has when he was a sophomore at if slanty Lincoln I know a lot of people know that you are holding those guys accountable and and does it in holding everybody accountable is a net for everyone play with this group right here was it more them holding
themselves accountable this is combination of you have you had to really go in and say hey we need to wait this is what we need to do you guys are slacking off have you had to do that well yeah we always got to do that I think and you know Richard Williams you know talked to our coaches staff and they're having read and in Finley and EJ you know all those guys we complement each other but we challenge each other also so you know that forces us to challenge our kids to get better so I you
know I give it a lot to my coaching staff and and we all on the same page as far as challenging our kids that get better every day that was one of our goals that they said not me they set a goal to get better every day to win the districts in the win the

state

championship they set those those for themselves before before we even played 10 games that money talked about winning three more are you making any schedule changes or anything are you just gonna plan on being here for the next till late
march for the next three years to 2022 how about this I'm just gonna ride with him if we're gonna be here for the next three years hey I'm gonna ride with him alright so there you have it if Salani Lincoln Division one

state

champions for this year there was so much talk for epsilon Lincoln coming in on and for good reason obviously coming in to the sea like wow this is gonna be kind of fun and this kid is going to be no one's predicting a

state

title all right yeah not I mean we
even talked about it in the in the postgame news conference you know people were talking about Ann Arbor skyline you know Ann Arbor your honor where people dips Elaine people talking about teams in Washington County yeah not a ton word talking about Lincoln County they're talking about a 15-mile really yeah and a lot of all right out of those five teams at the beginning of the season all right they could be better than an hour here on just because they're young whether or not better than
those other teams they swept they swept it be tipsy threes items you know they they and not only that if you look through their path might have been the toughest throughout the entire stage and they also had to play King you know they had then they had to play everybody's different style from across the

state

you know they had the physical toughness with the PSL three buzzer beaters to win yes including and that was a the perfect bounce you know a tornado a Memphis mauler yeah I got home on
Saturday night and and I was just like yeah you know and I was like wow it was an instant classic yeah why and then I just started to watching you know the final but yeah it was yeah but it was it was great to see you know Jesse Davis everything that the the Railsplitters that's what I think they want to attract championship or something like that you know maybe 15 20 years ago within that region but other than that they haven't want anything right and talk about a fan base that supports
their kids but they brought a couple thousand to Callahan did the same thing to Breslin Center now season they run a white out all season and wow what a em it it's a head saw hats off to the Lincoln you really perhaps you know it'd be one of those things let's see who can cheer the loudest and and be the best sports and our teams will win championships might have a lot more referees than or seven and I think the Division one champion rapper is representative of the way the season was
it was so wide open you didn't you couldn't have a really pinpoint who was the definitive frontrunner I mean I guess you could have said you of D was and then they eventually made the

state

finals

and Lincoln bumped him off but obviously there's been a ton of hype about Imani bass and it's all well deserved and it's all warranted because this kid is the likes of a phenom that we haven't seen in the

state

of

Michigan

since a Chris Webber a Magic Johnson I don't think
that's Josh Jackson was the number one freshmen in the country like Bates was true and don't go to the

state

but I got you this was another level yeah first time first time in the division 1 / Class A ranks that a

state

champion has a freshman as a leading scholar yeah yeah he averaged 30 points a game was everything that you would ever want from a superstar player it has a 14 15 year old kid did everything as TJ said the only probably the only true three level scorer in the

state

so
many different angles and there are a lot of really good scores and when I tweeted that out like I like maybe I maybe I'm just being a little critical I just seen words being thrown around that are just a little bit looser than what they should be sometimes you know over complementary players really break it down and yeah you sure does any-any got leadership qualities I did a rundown video that you can catch on

state

champs

Network common social media platforms this was far from just the
amani bait show yeah mari fry yeah Hodge Chapman Jalen Fisher who got the game-winner yeah were equally important to this Rondo flesh and they were doing so much to help their team and they really complemented each other so well and and to their credit you know these are seniors these are guys that some of these guys have been varsity for four years yeah and they didn't resist one inch of Imani Bates coming in here and taking all the headlines they supported him they augmented him and they
just you know get in where you fit in and and where they fit in now is a

state

champion and they're all getting fitted for rings right and I and I agree with you 100% I would even throw Cameron Cameron Johnson I tell you this what he does I will say I will say like glue guy his pass in the semi

finals

worried the dole for the ball simultaneously flipped it up I was to jail and Fisher and their Jalen Fisher throws it off the backboard and Emani Bates throws on the alley-oop yeah to me that was
like the epitome of what you want your team to be if you work hard you do this you go hit the floor you make that extra pass then look at all the results and look at everybody go wow yeah and I think it was I think it was great for everybody to see and yeah well as far as their money Bates goes you know it he was he was all class yeah you know as well and it was great to see that he wants to come back and 1 3 he did it and he didn't say really for someone that has that type of hype and that
type of scrutiny he didn't say one thing in the press conference and I'm not saying I'm saying this is a good thing yeah he like he's spread it around yeah Todd you talk Omarion talk Jalen you talk coach you talk you know he answered question they were asked yet he was not hogging the spotlight in any way shape or form he was spreading the love I do want to spread some love those who also Julian Dozier Daniel Friday yes Friday I mean he was playing a man possessed he was doing
every could lose that game yeah yep slamming Lincoln won it yeah it was a fortunate bounce for for Lincoln the get the potential game-winning shot hit the back rim and bounced yeah bounce - Jalen Fisher in the corner and kind of in one motion he picked it up and shot at which he has in his face yeah you know cold-blooded hits nothing but net wins the

state

titles were magic I don't know if your if your Jesuit what you really could have done other than saying maybe you know someone should I
had a body on him but but no quiver but no question a disappointing year for a team that I loved it that was really really great we got to get some great insight and you know again somebody's got to win somebody's got to lose but it just seemed like you know this was you know here and absolutely time was coming right right was there it was gonna come down and Friday had a couple sequences in that game or he just took over for 2-3 minutes pans and then Dozier hit a twisting layup through
2019 mhsaa state finals boys basketball state champs michigan
traffic to tie the game to set up the play for the for the game-winner for Lincoln that was so such a tough shot and shows the you know the intestinal fortitude that Julian dozer has you know five nine point guard and yeah he's just he's so tough he's tough as nails and it is so intelligent so savvy you know we you can say this with a lot of kids but I'll say it with him yeah it's Dueling dozer was six - he'd be a Big Ten recruit unfortunately he's five nine and
he's gonna have to play you know probably small school that doesn't wrong with being vertically challenged yeah we see a lot of small schools Division one in the in the NCAA yeah they come enough right now so I could see him lead in one of those squats right right I mean we've got some big-time scores that mark at Murray

State

game yeah well kind of get deeper as to where we are in Division one you can hear that in the audio version of the hangtime podcast so make sure you check that
out right now we are moving on to of course what everybody was talking about at the end of the tournament that was the end of the Division three game let's put that aside and just say that this was a great game as well between an upstart in Iron Mountain and the team that so we had predicted for the most part was gonna be able to take care of business pay wama Westphalia let's check out those highlights right it's always epic when two undefeated teams gather to decide who will be
this year's

state

champion in Division three battle between our 3rd ranked team Pewamo Westphalia fresh up knocking off Erie Mason first trip to the title tilt in five years for 22 year coach loophole and his

boys

fourth ranked Iron Mountain led by longtime head man Harvey Johnson and his Mountaineers beat the defending

state

champs

Detroit Edison in the semis and like the Pirates both teams looking to hoist the

state

Hardware for the first time in program history it's important to
remember you need to be five teams to get to the Breslin Center second straight year for the Pirates playing in this building the senior Nathan Worth pirates out to a 74 lead pay wama once again moving the ball well in the early action Andre Smith the Aaron bears 11 to 7 lead this was the first time since 1939 iron mountain had reached the

state

championship and back then it was AUP only bracket closed out the quarter on an eight nothing run Tony Farah - Jatin Mackenzie victim then victory
Mountaineers led 15 to 11 after the first in the second sophomore sensation foster wonders pulling up the friendly roll iron mountain up six now the Pirates actually only returned two starters from the 18 and six

championship standing here with Colin true baller you're standing at the free-throw line two shots to win you get the
ball back hey man it's gotta be a great feeling once you talk about it oh it's unbelievable feeling it's really a dream that you like there's a little kid you're sitting there like I want to be in that game-winning shot came to the game and you know it's a little different from hit a pole jump shot the wind in the free throw line a little more fresh drive I believe but it's something I practiced the law is a little kid always just go out there and I Drive away and
just put him up shoot a man and with my injury for the three weeks I never practiced coach had to be on the side just stationary had a guy to rebound for me and I'll just feel 20 and 30 free throws in a row you also talked about the success that some of the you know let's say this some of the older guys I'm not saying a full you know mix bits Lee and those guys are fairly twenty years early 20s yeah you know but you know as you look into what you're going to mean in this group
Andre everybody else beers what did what does this really mean for you guys at Bramall Australian community it's really it's amazing I don't know what else to say really it's just unbelievable II looked up the claims in an explicitly Adam Wesley the whole starting five early that whole team I loved watching I wasn't it missed one game that they played that year and to be one of those guys that kids to look up to me not literally they look up to me as a player alright so Pyo
Westphalia

we got to talk about it of course this was and for those who don't get an opportunity to know what happens immediately afterwards these are a couple of guys who were in that postgame conference and you know I'm sure motions are running high emotions were running high what do you guys want to say on first I want to give credit to Bucky Johnson the head coach of Iron Mountain for keeping as much as he could keeping his cool being magnanimous staying around for the
the the medal ceremony going to the press conference because I'll be frank yeah if it was me if this was my team I would not have been as magnanimous I would not good sport about it I would have pulled my team off the floor just said I would have said you guys shoot those free throws and do the medal ceremony without us we'll let the walk-off do our talking because in my opinion this was a

state

championship that was stolen away from from iron mountain unfortunately and I think it did I
think it was a disservice to everyone because I think unfortunately for pew want we should all just be talking about PW

state

absolute and what comments it will feel the worst and what country wanted because this kid didn't have a point the whole game I just score all six of his points in the final 30 seconds as well as either just as well as the entire laps the focus of the postgame conference or the postgame discussion should have been on what a gang Buster unbelievable tremendous job that
Trierweiler did but instead we're all talking about two very controversial calls that you know in my opinion just you shouldn't have happened and we've just never seen anything like this before I mean not one but two that is just so you know you could say what you want a controversial bat I mean you know general controversial calls like that to end a

state

fine I look at I looked at the time the time on the clock and I was like double-oh-seven will now mean three different things
Johnson Johnson straight championship and then what its gonna mean an Iron Mountain and what its gonna mean in Westphalia you know and yeah it's unfortunate I think that we all what we want in competition what I love to go and watch I love to watch close games I never have a favorite to win I just want a close game no injuries kids play hard you know keeping it simple and stuff like that I never have a horse in the race South Philly that was closed so you know we don't have to worry
about that anymore yeah but yeah it was it was so unfortunately what you're talking about whether it was you know we were talking to foster wonders in coach Johnson you know what market and his son Marcus Johnson you know on the on the winners it was nice he had his son out there with him yeah yet help yeah and it was yeah I mean was got to be deva

state

d ten hours 12 all ride back yeah you know that dinner that that Steve Mariucci paid for you know was I just blew it was something that like
I made anything like that there are a lot of tears that were going through before the double-oh-seven call you had the traveling call which pretty much clinched the game yeah the layup which was waived off and looked like had clinched the game and and it was the referee that was furthest away from the play that made that call without strange yeah and then I don't really understand you know it's a three-man team the one guy makes the intentional foul call with double-oh-seven on the floor
and then I saw that other officials call him into a conference I was kind of expecting them to say okay pump the brakes here yeah do we really want to end a

state

championship game on a flagrant five and they didn't and I kind of put the onus on them and who knows what was said but you know you got a real your real your uh your other official in on something like that that's just that's not the way you want to win a

state

title that's not the way you want to end what should be
you know the granddaddy of them all last day of the regular season everyone's in Breslin Center you know this is not a situation where we want to be talking about official yeah I know and taking it out of kids hands and you know whether or not it was technically the right call I know for me an intentional foul should only be called when when the kid is trying to hurt kind of explain for people maybe yes so there were four fouls or so Iron Mountain had to follows to give you knew yes so
it's but it's someone saying that they've got you know what four seconds on the clock all right what most Billy has to inbound the ball Iron Mountain fouls which is usually done in 99% look at him wrong if you breathe on them wrong you know if you make them flinch whatever you know immediately fouls are called just because they you don't want that flagrant foul just because if you're not gonna call this then I've got to do that yeah and the thing is he won't yeah he
went out and grabbed his arm let's say this I mean like this is not liquor and fun right if I'm coming across in a streak right or whatever and I grab your right arm and your balls in the left hand who's to say that you can't go over there foster wonders is right in front of him yeah so he's got to make a change one way or another and more than likely is going to be back to his dominant hand yeah and it's so insane that like so they were more than likely gonna follow
another two times and the clock would just run up you would run out because they are - falls - yes exactly the other and when you say give you can have just take it out the other thing and somebody mentioned to me a couple of days ago and actually was one of my neighbors and I was showing him the replay from Steve Fenimore you know put it up on Twitter on the travel call and this guy has no race in their horse sound over the last time he watched high school

basketball

he's like how much time
was on the clock that was like four or five seconds and you know he said why didn't you just dribble it out you know and they're talking about and it is one of those things I'm sure that more pressure doesn't need to be and you know more guilt or whatever needs to be at and it needs to happen but at the end of the day that wasn't a travel or shouldn't have been called a travel and then the other is that intentional foul is one of those things like you know wow man I just
imagined what do you do with your kids man they spilled some peanut butter after like that you know like it's one of those things like how far do you go last call they I mean the referee knew what he was doing I mean right this wasn't like got caught up in the heat of the moment you knew the

state

championship on the line yeah you knew that the call you're about to make is going to decide the

state

championship or

state

championship game I just don't see why you mean they're
gone but the thing is to do a back-to-back yeah me it's like one of those things all right wow maybe we shouldn't have made that hey guys let's get together let's make sure that we're everybody's on the same page that right now we can't we got to make sure that we're good you can't call that travel I understand if you want to make your travel call but that's your Travel Pass yeah all right smile the camera yeah I know but we've got to make sure that we
get this one let's also reiterate this is nothing against poama no no everything that they should have absolutely everything they could have done yes you know the

state

championship it was like someone offering them a game you want to say champion yeah and they took it yeah and you should go hit some free throws your most critical chatter that's hardened against coach Paul or Trierweiler or Andres Madras Aaron Pierce Pierce both who all three of those guys were just you know unbelievable
under pressure just tremendous phenomenal performance yes so I understand that it's almost like we're knocking Pewamo well they deserve a ton of credit yes and I and I wish that this discussion right now today and after the game and in the aftermath of Saturday that it was all just love for Pewamo we didn't have to kind of you know put almost a metaphorical or a a ceremonial asterisk yeah you know you mentioned foster wonders the sophomore sensation he had a great game we team high
20 yeah I mean both teams were undefeated coming in early twenty eight percent wise yeah so we want to give definitely credit to them but yeah we want to give credit to the pirates you know he's been their coach Paul for 22 years and they lost the Josh Jackson 2014 games so for them to to get this one was definitely well deserved and yeah it's it's it's stained but you know at the end of the day it always felt you know in 20 years from now ten years from yeah you know five years
from now all that you know if you're pom oh yeah the

state

chairmanship yeah it still says you won the

state

yeah you still have the ring you still have the trophy yep and if and if you're Iron Mountain you've got some young talent you got everyone coming back I mean your two best players let's go do it next year and wow what a party that will be right the other thing I was I was you know we when you talk about obviously we saw what happened people there other people are like oh
well what about the five-second call against Johnny Jones when Alchemist lost a sagging Arthur Hill when the referee is stanziano when there's a good five feet or you know and then you also look at look over it you know with our school was a Schoolcraft when they when they to abt and then abt had to forfeit you know and those are those are some some unfortunate situations and I think that this one and and my mr. mchabe over the Free Press pointed out that one of these three officials was on
the floor in 2008 in a in a final four game where there was a three that should have set the game into over that was blimp hours was up hours I don't know what I think was a grand rapid school they had hit a three and they ruled it a two and the three would have sent it to overtime and I'm so clearly a three and was at Lansing Catholic I think Lansing cap number one Lansing Catholic and powers and it looked like he looked was a foot inside but did it happen or pointed out that one of
these officials that was out which i think is valid that if you work a

state

final you can't work another one for three years which kind of takes away the notion that we're giving our best officials yeah the the best games yeah that's interesting that's interesting so we'll see what goes on but we still have one more game to get to yeah and that was in Division two the nightcap we had an amazing finish in the River Rouge Chandler Park game the night before we were expecting
another doozy in Division two it was that and then some the final finale of championship Saturday at the Breslin Center Division two after coming up short in two straight trips to the

state

semi

River Rouge got over the hump Friday night with a clutch overtime win over Harper Woods Chandler Park River Rouge 14

basketball

championship back with

state

champs

here with Noah Whizzer II looked like a wizard out there man and the point guard position and you did a great job I mean obviously you know Rouge has a lot of pressure a lot of great athletes that can be very mobile what was the key to just moving the ball around and making sure your guys were in the situation to score yeah I just think we moved got a lot of points in transition and we got open on the three-point line Ryan hit a lot of threes we got in the paint good and I mean we
had a ton of turnovers but the rebounds we had even out with that so that was big in looking forward what did Ben we talked about this in the postgame press it with everybody else you know you're winning on a championship football team and then being able to bring that over to the to the

basketball

side I mean you write in a great way what's next in the spring more championships I hope so you know let's see what we can do you played with any other sports in the spring I do I play
baseball look for Hudsonville unity christian kalamazoo yes plan was that championship battle creek maybe but a we look forward to seeing you and congratulation championship you've won championships before you've been able to feel that what is it to bring to the

boys

side for Hudsonville unity christian oh it means a lot it really does we had talked to I know as we progressed through the tournament we talked how important and how much fun it would be to win a

state

championship after the
soccer and football one and I thought for our fans have waited a long time you know okay there's a long time we revenge because we got actually beat by Benton Harbor in 1963 in the

finals

and how we come back what 50 some years later and get an advantage on that one so that was pretty nice looking into the future in 2020 how's the JV squad in really returning guys that you know they will play key factors and next season yeah you have a whole lot of time to think about we had a nice JV
Club though I think we went 15 and five this year and but I'll be honest and we're gonna miss these seniors you know it's saying goodbye to these guys it's gonna be pretty difficult but we do have some good younger classmen and thankfully oh they contributed tonight as well so they got a taste of it so that always helps if you get a little bit of a taste and congratulations on a great experience for the community and see you soon thank you so it's no surprise that we have the
final

state

finals

boys

basketball

championship be a total surprise and be a shocker which for me it was a shocker so we put this hole yes sleeper but I mean this hole and again yeah I slept on unity Christian I'll be the first to admit it in fact I said it in the highlights last Sunday that I think I slept on unity Christian I thought it was a foregone conclusion rouge was taking number 15 yeah I mean I thought when they got together the Grand Rapids Health Christian in the quarters I was
like well it was a great run but you know South Christian won the last one I'll probably find it was like 40 or whatever it was but unity Christian was a team on a mission and Granite River Rouge was coming off a big high of what they've done the night before but this was a team that finished the season on a 22 game winning streak 26 wins great

basketball

being played on the west side you're headed by the west side yeah wizard of the floor general spot Noah Whizzer II 17 points in
the semi semi 17 points in the final and just was was was dripping with finesse and in a playoff tournament that time after time you saw teams step up to the plate and defeat you know Goliath as it were and maybe we weren't quite in that situation in this matchup but hey we I had rivers that's right I mean the way they that and their schedule this season and the way they'd been playing going and they had been to the

state

they'd been to the final for three years in a row this was
a veteran group coming off a great win in the Final Four where they they stormed back and forced overtime and eventually upended Chandler Park yeah and you know this was this was a River Rouge team with a lot of depth and a ton of you know

basketball

i.q these were kids that that were were grinders as well you know they were the perfect mix of power and finesse yeah and it just to me again I thought it was a foregone conclusion that River Rouge was gonna win this thing but no one told unity and
those guys and and just you know just hats off they forced one tea three turnovers and had 15 steals yep River Rouge against unity Christian right and there ain't a lock that's that's a that's a crazy number whenever you you're usually doing that you're winning but then again if you get out real if you're out rebounded by fifteen as rules was 31 a 16 in the game that cancels out a lot of those turnovers because talk about offensive rebounds which a lot of coaches are
considered in all there are turnovers you know in a lot of in a lot of affection um another point that it was kind of brought up in this game was that unity Christian beat Rouge back when you needed Christian lost a divine child and bill McCartney was the coach back in the 20th century Brinkman was nobody the burden was interest on the miners right Dave Bing was assault was 30 years of they were still in Fort Wayne no but yeah but but you know I hats off to unity Christian and I think
they're one of those things where we and we've talked about it before half the team has won

state

championships in other whether it be football or whether it be soccer yeah and we owe that carries over especially with seniors they like women I like winners winners know how they're not intimidated by a team like River yeah they're going out there unity Christian played Rouge knowing the football

finals

or horseshoes me either that happened maybe maybe it didn't hallo everyone
I thought that both of them but yeah get out there and get after it yeah and you know best man win and we we're gonna put money on ourselves be the best man yeah yeah that's often CJ van cone then been covering yeah yeah was that was a beast in the post you know he want to following out at the very end but I'm it did a great job of dealing with Daniel few who's cut it to Lake Superior

State

and then future Division one player Legend Jeter who are you know oh six six six seven you
know and both have good size and they've been really doing a great job against most of their opponents and so all of a sudden they kept Nigel Coleman at bay yeah he kept in took Nigel out of the game Nigel does he had what 11 for 13 points in the first half and then it was only held to what two shots or something like that Nigel in the final four was 8 of 10 from the field 4 of 6 from three-point range hit the game-tying three to send it into overtime he was on fire and and and unity came
with with a fire extinguisher in the final that was that was the fire spot on the court I thought yeah after when Jalen Fisher hit his hit his bucket the game-winner which is maybe three feet inside of what when I drove home the night before and I at the end of the day it's one I think that you know South field Christian you know obviously we win by double digits when you talk about three other championships with it were all with inside fun possessions by one possession you obviously
something is gonna be written a little bit different but nice nice nice I'm sure it's tasty yeah I know a championship is the cherry on top of that sundae right now no I know Tom Tom Markov so you know some spots out there richer pretty good no no he's in he's enjoying his I'm looking forward to the ice cream challenge

2019

I know just just think about before we started the tournament and talking about Division two and you're talking about Romeo Weems and New Haven and
Scooby and and and the River Rouge crew the Williams team crew and just people are just looking past the unity and unity it was like yeah we're gonna we're gonna jump on this victory train and ride it all the way to Breslin Center and then we're gonna ride back West with a

state

with a

state

title trophy and Class B teams I mean if you look at we're gonna make these Catholic Central who made the

finals

last year lost on a buzzer beater you know obviously Harbor still on the way
up CC you have a point guard that's going to Grand Valley

State

yeah actually you have a kid that's going to play in the Big Ten yeah yeah yeah I didn't know any of these unity Christian parts are sport as Fred Southeastern zofran like what's happening at Detroit Catholic central range yeah with if they had made a run and you know you know again if something could beat them in the last second they get you know gone always we don't really know anything and they lost a lot of
their in talking with their coach they said that yeah that they had to move back their games because their football season went so deep yeah and what the

basketball

season started off and we remember when Muskegon pretty much did the same thing where they didn't get their bank there's a spell shape until mid-january and then they started off slow same thing as Hudsonville unit you know as far as far as unity Christian goes where they kind of got out of the gate a little bit slow and then
it was like kind of shake this off you know all right and everybody's tired clicking yeah we're

champs

we're

champs

you know whatever's going on in their head you know we're the best west side is the best side yeah again a lot of pressure on the baseball team now yeah yes yes yes yes and I think Noah's on there Noah's on the baseball team here win another one all these metals are hanging down on my body jacket got them like Clayton would look like et I mean and stuff
